The Man Who Flooded A Town For Sex
In 1993, a man named James Scott purposely damaged a levee and caused a massive flood of the Mississippi River only to stall his wife from coming home so that he could party.
His actions flooded 14,000 acres of farmland, destroyed buildings, and closed a bridge. He was convicted of "intentionally causing a catastrophe" and is still in prison serving a life sentence.
He may be innocent of that since it was some odd thing in the trial, as one of the main whitnesses having a major financial interest in having the cause being vandalism and not natural. However, as he has commited several arsons and burglaries he does belong in jail.

Had To Get Emergency Heart Surgery
33 out of 34 civilized countries love their healthcaresystem.
Load More Replies...So very sad. I'm guessing that this is a USA bill. Years of contributing to society, paying taxes, and then this! It's hard to even believe that a first world country treats it's citizens so poorly!
@Hippopotamuses....USA citizen here. Yes, this is heart breaking. Thankfully, I am rather healthy and up to this point haven't had to get any of these kinds of procedures completed or had these kinds of medical bills. I would be homeless in a second if it happened.
Load More Replies...OMG! The US government should be ashamed of themselves for not having universal health care…… in the richest country in the world to boot. Sick and disgusting
My mother had emergency surgery followed by 3 weeks in intensive care and then 3 months on the wards. Total cost: $260 for some medication on discharge. Australia.
Any stories about non emergency surgery? Blown knee? Knee replacement? Maybe even melanoma? I have a friend who died at 28 from skin cancer because he was on germanys healthcare system. When he finally saw a DR in the US he said they waited too long to take action. In the US you would get immediate treatment.
Load More Replies...Meanwhile, the United States is spending trillions of dollars to lose wars all over the world instead of funding healthcare.
I SWEAR TO F*****G GOD KRISTA. I don't give a s**t if I sound irrational or stupid, I'm just so mad at all those comments. The American healthcare system has f****d me over for every f*****g year of my disease riddled life and I HATE you for making it like this. Without people like you, I WOULD BE ABLE TO F*****G AFFORD MY HEALTHCARE. I WOULDN'T HAVE TO RATION MY LIFE SAVING MEDICATION. I WOULDN'T HAVE TO WAIT OUT PAIN BECAUSE THE ER IS TOO EXPENSIVE. I WOULDN'T HAVE HAD LIE TO END PHYSICAL THERAPY EARLY SO I DIDN'T HAVE TO KEEP PAYING THAT BILL. I absolutely hate you and I hope you feel guilty for every single death you've contributed to. And btw, not everyone gets appointments quickly like you. I've suffered through too much damn s**t to have patience for people like you. I'm angry and tired at the medical system and I'm angry and tired at people like you who think it's fine the way it is.
I hear you and I'm sorry that this supremely f****d system has screwed you over like it did me. I saw 6 different medical professionals over 3+ years before one of them had the sense to check my Vitamin D. It was borderline severely low. And if I hadn't figured out that I needed to see a Rheumatologist (was finally diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis) I'd probably have died by now. And because my ex lied during our divorce the judge didn't believe I was sick (this was right before my diagnosis) so I'm now in a situation where I can't even afford health insurance. I wish I could say I know it's going to get better, but I don't want to lie to you.
Load More Replies...No wonder they make movies about people robbing banks to get vital treatment for their kids. Unbelievable.
There's no debtor prison. Meaning they no longer arrest you for unpaid debts in the US. I don't have insurance. I had $8000 in hospital bills and didn't pay. Collection agency kept sending me scary things in the mail like ill have to go to court. It hasn't actually happened. I never paid. I ignored it. When I looked at my credit it was good 5 years later. My credits 7.5 I was told medical debt doesn't go on your credit card report. I haven't seen it with mine. I guess worse case it's bankruptcy? Which makes finding a place to live hard 3 years after you file. I don't have a co signature either. Apartments don't rent to people who file bankruptcy for a certain amount of years. Homeless rate is ridiculously high also. Dental offices, prompt care & doctor offices make you pay up front so you can't dine and dash. Why we have $12,000 debt for dental on our care credit card which has made me have to use food banks.
I just posted a similar comment to yours. As of 2022 medical bills no longer show on your credit report. Still have 12k from a hernia surgery back in 2019 that my insurance paid 20K towards. and 2.5K for a covid test after (the free) covid test clinic advised me to go to the emergency room coz of my lungs. Yep get those BS letters from collection agencies, and they go into the trash. As for dental I went with dentures 20 years ago. Anyways Tiffany, don't worry about those outstanding med bills! Have an avg of 810 credit score.
Load More Replies...I'm in the US. My dad had a quintuple bypass, got a pacemaker and ICD, had to stay in the hospital for about 2 months due to an incredibly slow, problem filled recovery, and my mom got a bill for almost a million dollars. It was so funny to look at on paper that all we could do is laugh. Give me two.
That is f*****g outrageous. Healthcare in this country is just another big box store and it fills me with rage.
My first bill for cancer surgery? $351,000 10 years ago. My total medical bills related to cancer-- chemo / radiation follow up stuff in the past 10 years? Just under $4,000,000.00
It's sad that our health care is built around capitalism. Quite disgusting actually.
I have to laugh at getting down voted for my personal experience. 🤦♀️😂😂
Load More Replies...Anyone who is against universal Healthcare in america should have to pay these for everyone else. I'm sure the insurance company gets tax dollars from the government on top of premiums and co-pays. Enough is e f*****g nough.
You trust the government to decide what what medical treatment you can and can’t get? Not me
Load More Replies...Number one cause of personal bankruptcy in the richest nation on earth (and most likely in *history) is medical bills. *There were many nations in the past that had massive wealth for their times so comparisons are vague at best.
i love america but i tend to agree with countries like norway that say america is an underdeveloped country due to lack of free healthcare
I don’t trust the government with my medical care. They ****everything up. Look at social security
Load More Replies...When I had my son, our combined hospital bill came to almost $500,000. He was premature and I ended up in the ICU. A month or so after we were home, I found a paper from my ob/gyn explaining the charges for a typical delivery- I seriously laughed and then cried. It wasn't pretty.
This picture is actually really bugging me! How can the US government actually think this is acceptable? Why has nothing been done to sort out healthcare?! I've had 4 major surgeries, tonsillectomy, and 2 minor surgeries, numerous scope procedures etc etc and I am not in debt because of it, because of the NHS! Im on immunosuppressive injections and any other prescriptions cost me £000
In most countries, "Your money or your life" is something you hear from stick-up artists. In the US we hear it from out health care system. Common factor - criminality for profit.
I've lived and worked in multiple EU and US states, and I've never waited longer or had to pay nearly as much as I did in America, even with what's considered a "great" insurance.
Load More Replies...It is truly awful that a developed country does not have public health. My country now is having problems with public health (not enough doctors and nurses, underpaid and exploited, not enough beds...) but my mom is alive thanks to them (operation after I was born, 2 mastectomies, tyroid extracted, serious heart problems, has a oxygen machine now at home) and everything was free. She pays part of the prices for some medicine (and very little) but that is all. Often we don't realize how good you have it until you compare it with someone who has it far worse. I wish you people from those countries will end up having public healthcare.
This is why I recently prioritized buying a small house over going to the emergency room like they wanted me to. I don't have insurance, and a trip to the emergency room would ensure that I would be homeless. I also don't trust doctors, because all I needed was a $16 course of antibiotics and it cleared the pneumonia right up. My credit would have been completely in the toilet, and I would have been unable to buy the house had I listened to them. Over $16!
You could look into low cost options. My daughter got a ultrasound to diagnose her stomach ulcers for $110.
Load More Replies...In the USA you don't have to pay it, and as of 2022 medical bills no longer show on your credit report. I had hernia surgery back in 2019, my insurance paid 20K and was still getting billed for 12K...ignored it. As of 2022 was knocked off my credit report. I still get an occasional letter (2-3 times a year) from collection agencies, they go in the garbage.
This is why I keep laughing when my fellow Americans argue against socialised medicine. Time for medical bankruptcy. I've had to file for it. When I became disabled suddenly and couldn't find care. I would have lost everything otherwise. Our medical system in the U.S. is a joke.
It will cost 0.- in my country (my dad got a triple bypass in september 2021. No cost at all, including rehabilitation and convalescence program).
Well, it says "thank you for choosing..." so clearly this is a free, perfectly functioning market and he had ample time and knowledge to make the best value choice. You heartless socialists would force him to pay a tiny amount in taxes but rob him of his right to choose! /s
I betcha that this is WITH health insurance coverage. Jeebus. The US sucks.
Doubt it because it would say in the statement. Something similar to “waiting on insurance payment”
Load More Replies...Krista thinks countries with subsidized/universal healthcare pay sky-high taxes. I have to ask if she has done any research to those claims. I live in Canada, work full time on minimum wage, which is now $15.40/hr. in my province. The taxes (all together to help pay for many services, infrastructure, healthcare, you name it.) I paid are 10.80% of what I made in the year, less than $36, 842. You can do the math. We also have employee health insurance through work, that helps pay for the health needs not covered under our provincial health, such as dental, physiotherapy, optometry, prescriptions, birth, etc. My premiums for that are about $60-$70 every bi-weekly paycheque. When I go to the clinic, I don't pay to see a doctor. When my daughter needed day surgery. No bill. The most expensive bills we've dealt with were dental for my daughter's wisdom teeth extraction and a few fillings. That came out to about $2K around there, because of the anaesthesia and dentists are just expensive af.
That’s crazy they don’t include dental, eye AND birth? Do you know why no birth ? I pay 46$ a month for 100% coverage. But also doesn’t include dental or eye. But does include child birth.

Seriously, who's job is it to send these out? Somebody, somewhere, sees this and says, yeah that's totally do-able, that's a normal thing to ask of someone after surgery. Like, how do they put a stamp of approval on something so ludicrous? Go ahead and find another mortgage payment to send us every month!
The same people who deny urgent healthcare to someone who doesn't have insurance. These people must never sleep at night. Which probably makes them unable to think right.

Once again, I'm reminded of how deeply thankful I am for the Danish healthcare system, which has saved my own life and the lives of several of my loved ones more than once at NO cost to us (except indirectly through taxes, obviously). I simply CANNOT wrap my head around the fact that Americans aren't all clamoring for universal healthcare. I shudder at the thought of having to stress over money in the context of a serious health crisis - it's a nightmare scenario to me, and I'm shocked all over again every time I'm reminded of the fact that it's reality for millions upon millions of people.
It's in Texas, USA. The healthcare dumpster fire capital of the country.
Load More Replies...In Norway we have what we call an 'exemption card'. No matter what your issues are, cancer, anxiety, broken bones, you pay a maximum of EUR 275 per year. For any treatment, drug or check-up.
My mother needed a triple heart bypass while visiting family in the homeland (The Netherlands) covered by a Canadian travel insurance company: the total bill was approximately €35K...
Not trying to start an argument but will the pro socialized medicine please explain how you think it would work in the US? Britain has a population of 67 million. Australia has a population 25 million. Canada 38 million. How would socialized healthcare work in a country with a population of 332 million?
And the whole of America went beserk about Obamacare. Something that is SO normal in Europe…
What country do you think this was in? I will give you three guesses, and you only need one.
I'm surprised more people don't end themselves over these kinds of medical bills.
3 broken ribs...200 thousand, what is almost as sad is its still not enough to buy a house.
How? My husband was 2nd and 3rd degree burned on over 25% off his body. Ambulance and 11 days at a burn ward.. morphine. Bandaging. Debriding of the blisters by a surgeon. And had 4 different IVs at the same time for 11 days. And his bill was 160k. Of which we paid $0. How did 3 broken ribs cost 200k🤔
Load More Replies...Someone I know had a recent hospital bill for over 6 million. His insurance covers 80% only.
This is partly why I can't understand why some Americans genuinely think America is the best country in the world.
@ Krista Peters - Again, As a medical biller, I know you are lying, if your insurance was less than what people paid in taxed for universal healthcare, you would have s**t insurance. Stop lying. And yes, I know this because for college where I got my degree in medical billing and coding, I did a report on universal healthcare in other countries verses private pay insurance in the US.
Load More Replies...This is why many hospitals in the US have a financial department that can write off debt for patients. Many pull in so much money from insurance companies the patient portion is almost meaningless. The thing is you have to prove it would cause a financial hardship.
See my point is proven. All the down votes. 😂😂

A person will sadly pay one way or another. Damaged credit from negative reporting or bankruptcy will cause typical living expenses to rise or just be out of reach.
Load More Replies...Sincerely hope they got some assistance with Medicaid if in the USA. And, well, let’s face it. Very few countries would do this to people. Need emergency heart surgery, sent the next heart attack by mail
How can someone survive??? In California, in order to get help with "food stamps" you need to be 200% below the poverty level...YET... undocumented get full health coverage and qualify for free gender reassignment surgery
But health insurance is communism. It's your choice. You keep voting for the wrong people.
Americans vote for who says they will take care of the problem. Then once that person is in office, they don't do what they promised. We aren't voting for the "wrong" people. We are voting for liars and backstabbers to the citizens that aren't multi millionaires and can't "line the pockets" of the people in the government that actually vote for these changes.
Load More Replies...Unless you live here in the US and pay attention to politics, then you have no right to make that claim. Many, MANY polls show the majority of Americans want a nationalized healthcare system. There is not a single politician, from any camp, who is even addressing such a thing. There is literally no one to vote for to make it happen.
