Stars such as Julia Fox, Florence Pugh, Bianca Censori, Teyana Taylor and Kristen Stewart are just some of the celebrities that have embraced the aesthetic.
Dakota Johnson, one of the trend’s most frequent adopters, previously brushed off the backlash:
“I really don’t care,” she told Vogue Germany in 2023.
But many viewers do.

“These dresses aren’t empowering women or showing a feminine side,” a viewer argued. “They’re showing that these women are willing to do just about anything to be ‘remembered.’”

Chappell Roan has developed a reputation for theatrical fashion and boundary-pushing visuals throughout her career, with her 2026 Grammy’s appearance being far from an isolated moment.
For instance, at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Los Angeles, the singer honored one of her greatest inspirations, Cyndi Lauper, with a heartfelt speech and a look only true fans could decode.
Roan arrived on the red carpet styled by LA stylist Genesis Webb in a look that paid direct tribute to two of Cyndi Lauper’s outfits from the True Colors music video.
The ensemble featured a custom newspaper skirt built from strips of broadsheets cut into Rococo-style hips.

On her head, she wore a glittering custom piece designed by production designer Manny Robertson, modeled after another headpiece Lauper wore in the same videoclip.
Roan completed the look with a sparkling bustier and vintage jewelry.
“Look at me! I may not have talent, but I can stretch the envelope,” one user mocked. “This makes Victoria’s Secret look demure and tasteful.”

However, among viewers, the sheer fatigue seems to be real.

Roan is nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for The Subway. She is also scheduled to present during the ceremony.

IMO (and I'll probably get hate from some people here, but eh), it's not memorable, 'pushing boundaries' or 'feminist' to show you have boobies. Lots of biologically born females have them; it's not ground-breaking. She's trying to go for a shock factor that isn't a shock; she just looks tacky AF.

I'm conflicted over this one. With the veil she had over, it was a great outfit imho. Very Artsy, very bold and daring, suggestion without exhibition. Also, looks like an artsy interpretation of an ancient Greek goddess look. Everything was on point, hair, makeup, outfit. Shoes, out of place, but that's secondary and that's just my o3.14nion. Now when she dropped the veil... I still fond the look artsy, but totally, TOTALLY inappropriate for a Grammy awards ceremony. T'was just vulgar there like that, meat exposed. So, yeah, conflicted. The mystery over the overall outfit when she had the veil on, would've made the headlines in a different way rather than this exhibition partayyy, Imho.

Just leave the woman alone already. Oh, and maybe sneak a look at the real red carpet pics instead of the crazily edited ones BP is posting here. Her nips aren't even visible. Those rings are "pierced" through sheer fabric about an inch higher than where her nips would actually be and I'm pretty sure she even has silicone pasties on under that. Adding sloppy pixelization on top of an "illusion dress" like his one just makes BP looks like the National Enquirer or something. 👎

Let's all grow up a little shall we? This style of dress was debuted by Mugler in 1998. Almost 30 years ago! And we're still shocked by the sight of a woman's nipples?! If a music event isn't the place to dress a little wildly, then I don't know where is. Chappell is a beautiful woman, she wore a beautiful, albeit unusual, dress. There's enough judgement in this world. I think we can afford to be a little more accepting of the things that really don't hurt anybody ❤️
