Curiosity and learning never go out of style. No matter the year. No matter the season. In a world that’s full of half-baked conspiracy theories, disinformation, and over-exaggerated (or completely made-up) trivia, it’s nice to find a source that you can trust. It only helps when it’s entertaining as heck, too. Enter, stage left—the ‘WTF Facts’ Twitter account.

A project that has 182.7k fans on the social media site, ‘WTF Facts’ shares daily facts about the world that you might have never heard before. History, science, and more, the account covers pretty much everything and has something to interest everyone. And it’s a surefire way to get you to dig deeper and do more research on the bizarre topics.

We’ve compiled the most intriguing new facts shared by the account to make your week a tad more interesting, Pandas. Don’t forget to upvote your fave facts as you scroll on down, and be sure to tell us which ones really blew you away.

Meanwhile, if you’re hungry for more knowledge like the proud Ravenclaws we suspect you are, you’ll find Bored Panda’s articles about the wonderful and weird ‘WTF Facts’ project right here: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.

Meanwhile, read on for Bored Panda's interview with Steven Wooding. A member of the Omni Calculator project and the Insitute of Physics in the United Kingdom, he shared some of his thoughts about why intelligence is valued so much, what to do as a scientist if you expect a theory might be wrong, and how he'd get someone interested in physics.

Steven, a member of the Omni Calculator team and the founder of the Weird Units Converter, told Bored Panda that, on the positive side, people like to help others by sharing their knowledge. That's why society values intelligence so much. Though that's just one side of the equation.

"However, it can be a negative behavior if someone uses their superior intelligence to belittle other people," he said that some people see their intelligence as an excuse for arrogance.

"As with most things, we need to find a happy balance. Looking at the big picture, humans have had extraordinary success in evolutionary terms by sharing knowledge," he said that there's a correlation between the two.

We tend to believe the things that are repeated the most, whether they're true or false. Nobody's quite immune to this, no matter how smart they are. Bored Panda wanted to get Steven's opinion on what a scientist might do if they suspect that a certain theory might be incomplete or completely wrong, even though their colleagues believe it.

"The short answer is that you should repeat the truth more often than falsehoods," Steven, from the Omni Calculator team, told us.

"The longer answer is probably to convince people one by one and hope they can spread the truth for you. Scientists can get very frustrated that a large part of the population holds a particular unscientific view, but the truth will win in the end. One example is the increasing belief now in human-made climate change compared to a few decades ago," he pointed out that the truth ends up in the spotlight, sooner or later. However, it's still important that scientists fight for the public to accept the truth.

We were also curious as to how Steven would spark someone's curiosity about physics. Here's what he had to say: "I would tell them about exoplanets and that nearly every star you see in the sky has at least one orbiting planet."

He continued: "Just as in our solar system, there are many different types of alien worlds out there, so the subject is endlessly fascinating. I would encourage them to learn how we detect exoplanets and introduce them to a citizen science project where they can help discover new planets." Are we going to spend our lunch break googling exoplanets? Darn right we are!

Created in May 2020, ‘WTF Facts’ has carved out a great niche for itself over the past two+ years. It hooks people in with the strange facts it presents, as well as the cool visuals. The fact-checking they do also doesn’t hurt.

If you ever felt like you know pretty much everything there is to know about the world or that things seem really boring, hopefully, the Twitter account’s posts can help reignite your passion for learning. After all, it sometimes takes merely a single fresh idea that’s outside your box and/or comfort zone to get your noggin’ jogging. The next thing you know, it’s three hours later and you’ve read half of Wikipedia. One thing leads to another and… well, we all know how research can take us down a rabbit hole into Wonderland and beyond.

There’s a dilemma when we speak about bite-sized chunks of information. Especially on social media. On the one side, we like to stay up-to-date with all the news and scientific developments.

On the other hand, the info stream is so huge that it’s impossible to spend enough time double-checking each and every fact. So it all comes down to learning to verify information quickly and picking and choosing reliable sources over iffy ones.

Previously, Bored Panda spoke to entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington to hear his thoughts on checking the reliability of sources, media literacy, and our ever-shortening attention spans.

"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, 'this can't be true,'" he said how we ought to approach any fact or piece of news.

"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," he explained that even though the internet has given us a lot of wonderful things, at the same time, there are certain downsides to using it.

According to media expert Mike, a great way to double-check the reliability of something is to start off with a simple Google search. If something sounds really outlandish, try to remain skeptical until you can cross-check the reliability of the fact or source.

"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," the expert stressed to Bored Panda that people should try to be more aware of what they repost online.

In his opinion, the sources that are the most trustworthy are the Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times.

"They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you," he said. "There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he said.

"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be.”

However, our shortening attention spans aren’t something unchangeable or a sentence for life. We can reverse them with a bit of effort.

"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I’ve discovered it improves your ability to focus, it’s more calming, you retain more information, and it gives you a more balanced and nuanced view of the world."

Several people on here have mentioned Testosterone levels, which are sort of relevant, however, more relevant is the fact that he / she had built up considerably more muscle mass prior to taking testosterone suppressants than a woman could ever have done (unless she'd taken steroids (testosterone amongst them) which would have made her ineligible to compete under international doping laws ..... Confused ; yup, me too.

Cheating implies intent to break the rules towards a personal advantage. She didn't break any rules since there are no rules (so far) concerning transgender athletes. If she purpisefully changed her gender-identity with the intent to win the competitions then yes. That would be cheating. This, though? Just really unfortunate problem which needs a fair solution

LAst time I read up on this, 'she' has not gone through transition surgery and has male genitalia. And insists on using a female locker room, making the born females in the locker room uncomfortable. Plus anyone who goes through puberty as a male has an inherent, irrevocable sporting advantage over females. Recently heard that the international swimming federation is prohibiting transgender individuals from competing in their non-origin class. As they should.

Changing sex does not change the musculature she was born with. She still has the shoulders and strenght of a man and the DNA of a man, therefore, winning first place equates as cheating and should be disregarded, as she has an unfair advantage over women who were born with female musculature and strenght. In the civil law and on paper, they may be equal, but physically, they will never be. There, I said it!

Musculature changes at puberty. Prior to puberty there isn't a whole lot of difference between boys and girls. For example, one of our local swim clubs lists 10 and under records for various distances. For some of the distances, the girl's record time is faster than the equivalent boy's record.

If a transgender person was male at birth and went through puberty as a male it gives them a completely unfair advantage over born females and they should never be able to compete in a professional sport. It's totally and utterly wrong. However, if they started puberty suppressing hormones and don't go through male puberty and instead take female hormones and goes through puberty as a mtf girl then that should be the only way they are allowed to compete against born females. This one still has male genitals.

Going through puberty as a male is the big difference. Prior to age 10 (and puberty) there isn't much difference between male and female swim times. In fact, a girl holds the record times for some of the distances at one of our local clubs. Her best time for 50m freestyle was 30.60 seconds, the best under 10 time for a boy at that distance is 31.38 seconds.

I feel like there are too many variables to this statement. What was their mental state prior to transitioning? How truly focused on the sport were they when they were male? How many women are they competing with? I noticed that it says they ranked 462 in the WORLD as a male but then does not define the parameters for women's competition (I believe it was college) So it's college stats vs world stats...mixing facts to make a point? kinda goes to show how we read things and then jump on them without really noticing what we just read.

This is really misleading. Before she transitioned she was in the top ten at Penn and in the top 100 nationally. She even recorded top mens teams in 2019. When she started transitioning is when her rank started slipping. At the beginning of her transition is when she was ranked that low. Those numbers were pulled out of a hat for an anon letter sent to the NCAA.

There is a lot of very thinly veiled transphobia in this comment section, which is pretty gross. First off all, the post is BS. She isn’t ranked first. Second of all, this isn’t an issue with a simple solution. Sports should be a balance of fairness and inclusivity. In addition, it’s not like the best swimmers in the world don’t have unfair advantages either. Michael Phelps has a hyper-jointed chest, allowing him to kick better, double jointed ankles, a wingspan longer than his height, and size 14 feet that help in the same way flippers do.

The title is misleading, since there is world rankings per discipline for women and men alike. That is a fact! However, to call this swimmer the best women swimmer within NCAA org shows you exactly what is wrong with the world today. They should be competing with like bodied (changed) people to make it more equal and not destroying the field of the opposite sex because they could not be successfull as in the one born in. I don't really understand the "biological advantage" stuff? We don't get on Michael Phelps for having the perfect body for swimming and thus a biological advantage, we just tell the other swimmers to work harder. I'm not saying that's fair, but I am saying we need to acknowledge what's unacceptable, why it's that way, and confront our biases. You can't have a trans league if you aren't going to help create one. This is all complete nonsense. People who use "common sense" arguments about the difference between cisgender men's and women's bodies, or the role of hormones in giving an edge to trans athletes, just don't know what they are talking about. There is no, repeat no - zero, zilch - scientific evidence that transgender women have an advantage over other women athletes because they were identified as male at birth, or because they take female sex hormones (estrogen). Before deciding you think you know what you think you know, please do some research (Facebook rants by "sports fans" in a moral panic do not constitute reliable research). Sports divided by sex/gender generally need an overhaul as we are (hopefully) becoming more inclusive. We need to rethink sports and select different parameters, other than the genitals someone was born with. For example: muscle structure, mass, strength, body type, etc. this will allow people to not feel excluded because of their gender or biological sex (after all, both gender and sex exist on a spectrum, according to science https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/the-science-of-biological-sex/ and https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/types-of-gender-identity#definition-of-gender-identity). The issue should be with the system, not with transgender athletes like Lia who simply want to compete in a way that affirms their gender.

She is a woman. She should compete in woman's sports. This does not justify kicking trans people out of athletics. It also seems there is some misogyny around assuming that people who are amab are automatically better at sports and athletics

Look. I support LGBTQ. I am LGBTQ. I think Trans people should be allowed to compete in the group of the gender they identify as in amateur sports. Like middle/high school maybe. Recreational sports. But at a Pro level, that's an incredibly unfair advantage, and there should be some distinction. Maybe add a third Unisex category or something, where any athlete could participate regardless of gender, and that could be inclusive of trans people. But there is a biological advantage here, even though I hate to say that.

I know I’ll get hate for this but I think people don’t realise these facts and are fighting over information they don’t know about 1. Testosterone levels do not matter When taking oestrogen (which isn’t necessary but is done by most transgender women), testosterone levels are exactly the same as a cis woman. Testosterone can be measured in different ways but nano moles are most commonly used. 95% of cis women have below 2 nano moles per litre 94% of transgender women also have below 2 nano moles per litre Now this study was only using 250 candidates but similar trends have been seen. So, what other advantages are there? 2. Haemoglobin Levels Haemoglobin levels often follow testosterone and you guessed it - meaning that a transgender woman’s decrease in testosterone leads to decreased in haemoglobin. Pt 1

Some factors to consider: This process will take 3-4 months. Haemoglobin only plays a factor when considering endurance. So, in an 800m race speed is more important than endurance while in an 1800m race endurance is necessary OPINION: I also think that even if a trans woman has higher haemoglobin levels (within reason) that should not be that important. Many athletes are known to try and increase their levels by working in areas with less oxygen such as on mountains. Should they be disqualified? Should areas which produce people with high haemoglobin counts be disqualified? These are my own thoughts to get you thinking Again, what are the other factors? 3. Lean body mass and strength This part is key. Many trans women have starved themselves and wish not to look muscular due to gender dysphoria and to try look more feminine, this means that many studies are done on these women with little to no muscle. Therefore a change is often difficult to record Pt 2

Trans people are great but the biological makeup of the make and female bodies are different and I don't think she should be in female competitions. We love trans representation (I'm questioning my gender identity myself) but... this is a no for me luv.

Can’t sports just be people of similar height/weight/strength competing against each other instead of gender since even in the same gender people vary considerably? Im male but absolutely tiny and obviously wouldnt win in any sports against 6 or 7 foot tall blokes ☹️

Need non-sex categories. Something like boxing's weight classes so that sex is irrelevant. Especially since Lia is claiming a *gender* change which should be irrelevant already.

As a woman, if I want to say I am equal, can do anything a man can do, should be paid equally to a man, and command the same respect, to then whine that it's not fair, that this individual is better than me, well, it shreiks hypocrisy. For me. I say congratulations Lia! I hope you are enjoying your journey, and are happy.

There are no equal rights in this and there is no justification for a scientifically, biologically obvious male body to compete against a woman's biologically weaker body. Women have it hard enough with the way they are treated by men without this new, absurd way of making everyone inclusive. Oh the irony, making sports fair and diverse at the expense of trampling all over womens rights.

‘Biologically obvious male’ what the heck does that mean? Broad shoulders? Flat chested? I think you’ll find many cisgender female athletes possess these traits too. Please elaborate on specifically which women’s rights are being trampled all over to allow a trans woman to compete?

Nothing to brag about. He was nothing special when competing with men, he had to switch to competing with women to be noticed. He should be ashamed. He also likes to strut around the locker room supposedly. He has his male genitals. He has cheated hard working female swimmer and should be banned.

HE is a cheating scammer who knew the only way HE could ever medal was to compete against females. HE enjoyed beating women and smirked about it in every interview, knew HE had a massive advantage, enjoyed making the female swimmers uncomfortable in what should be the safe space of the locker room, colluded to lose a race with another trans swimmer who claims to be a man but chose to continue to compete in women’s events (wonder why), stole medals from deserving swimmers and if he wants to he can still decide to be a man again because he still has all his parts.

Discussion of transgender athletes really does bring the general public's ignorance of transitioning out of the woodworks... HRT absolutely does alter muscle mass, significantly. Within 6 months the effects set in, and within 3 years the effect is such that there's little to no difference between cis and trans for muscle potential. Arguments about "bone structure" are similarly absurd, as anyone who is familiar with the actual difference in bone structure is well aware of (spoiler: it's WAY less than you'd think). Basically the entire argument against trans athletes is nested deeply in transphobic gatekeeping, inventing arguments that anyone who has more than a high-school-level of understanding of the human body and the effects of hormones on it can tell you is completely bunk.

This is actually wrong, I encourage people to research it themselves. After 1-2 years of hormone therapy any differences between male and female bodies are negligible. You can not hurt trans people without hurting cis people too.

Hormone therapy doesn't change all differences. Bone structure for example. There are still advantages to be had by trans women athletes.

If anyone's wondering why this hasn't been done yet: 1. That's a metric sh*t-ton of solar panels - roughly 10 times the number of solar panels in use today around the globe 2. Unworkable, since the desert moves, the sands shift, there's nothing to anchor the panels to 3. You'd need an army of people to clean the panels every day - where are you going to house them? 4. You'd need the combined output of every cable company in the world for the next 15 years to wire it all up
