50 Of The Most Heartwarming Pics And Stories Of Happily Adopted Pets (Best-Of-All-Time Edition)
Get ready to suffer a heart attack from the cuteness that you will experience in this listicle. Not literally, of course.
You can wager how excited people get when they adopt and rescue a puppy or a kitten or any other floof of floofiness, but it seems to go double—nae, triple—for the floofs themselves. And when it hits the internet, the joy spreads.
Speaking of which, guess what’s hiding just a few scrolls away? Yep, the joy we just talked about.

The Time I Rescued A Crying Kitten Outside My Cat Cuddled Her
Tell me that doesn't tug at your heart. I love these kinds of stories here on BP.
All gingers are natural mothers? Certainly our boy Stampy is - in charge of cuddles and grooming for the whole gang.
Awww! Animals show more empathy than we believe there are capable of.
Dawww. Cats know that kitty cuddles are the best thing in the world. So of course they would share them with other cats as well.
We Adopted An 11-Year Old Cat From A Chicago Shelter. He And My 13-Yo Daughter Fell In Love. This Is Them After She Got Back From A Week At Camp
My Friend Just Texted "Adopted A Dog Yesterday".... With This Pic
It goes without saying these days that pet adoption and rescue is the way to go if you’re in the market for an animal companion who would nibble on your couch but would in turn love you more than any human could.
We won’t dive into why shopping for pets is less than ideal but rather will focus on the 920,000+ reasons why there ought to be more adoption.
My Husband Couldn't Have Pets Growing Up. When We Bought Our First House I Got Him A Little Surprise
That's exactly what I was thinking. It doesn't even look real, it's so itty-bitty!
Load More Replies...I always felt that a person/family should adopt 2. They keep each other company (especially when home alone) and, eventually one will pass on. The surviving pet helps you gwith your grief.
Something tells me this may not be their last pet adoption!

My Rescue Cat Assuring My Recently Adopted Pup That She Will Be All Right And Is Now In A Home Full Of Love
Had To Say Goodbye To Becker. Adopted Him At 18 Because He Needed A Final Home And He Surprised Us By Being The Most Loving Cat That Ever Lived. Never Missed An Opportunity To Get Pets And Would Always Greet You At The Door. I Don't Think He Ever Stopped Purring. #adoptdontshop
Thank you for giving him a comfy spot to spend his last days in <3
I'm tearing up. So glad you gave him a great love while you had him.
My sister adopted a blind, elderly cat that had been thrown out of a car and left at the side of a busy road. Imagine being blind, not knowing where you are and then being left beside a road that would have killed him had someone not found him. He lived with my sister for 4 love filled months before he passed away in my sister's arms. He was such a snuggle bug and just a beautiful soul and I'm glad I was able to play a small part in giving him love in his final months on this earth.
A sweet boy who jad his wings his whole life… he just needed love to let him fly!
The aforementioned 920,000 number was actually how many dogs and cats were euthanized annually in the past several years. This is actually an improvement on the 2.6 million who were euthanized back in 2011. Luckily, the number declined.
And it’s statistically more likely that this number included a bigger proportion of cats than it did dogs.
I Adopted The Saddest Looking Cat At The Shelter Three Years Ago
Now, happiness, so content, much love to give, in some cities, if nothing is done to help with the stray cats, they multiply, they did not ask to be born, and discarded, my city does not help, it makes me livid, so many cats, suffer and die, there are some small groups that rescue the cats, have them fixed, and work hard to find them homes, all by donations, one of my cats came from a group, therefore, I donate when I can, please adopt, so many in shelters just need food and love !!!
Khemjira Klongsanun Found An Abandoned Puppy On The Road Side In Thailand Whilst Running A Marathon, Carrying It For 19 Miles To The Finish Line And Adopting It. That Puppy Is Now All Grown Up!
Hmm... this is adorable. But is that the same dog? The face "pattern" looks so different 🤨 Edit: Thanks for all the explanations, I was genuinely curious as I have never had a puppy and I do not know how their fur evolves 😊
My dog was born with a black face and just some caramel markings. As an adult, her whole face is caramel. They grow into the marks.
Load More Replies...WOW! Just a thought, what if she'd carried that dog all along it's growing, what a fitness regime that would've been!
Bless your big heart, knowing you are one of some, that care, and help !!!

Your the true winner in the race. You'll be paid with love. Not ribbons or cash. That's just fine
Frankie Was Born With Four Ears And An Eye Deformity But He’s Still Purrfect
Oh you are in trouble with this one, that means he can hear the food bowl being filled twice as fast.
And from an even greater distance!!!! so cute!!!
Load More Replies...Frankie is so cute! Just kind of permanently buffering into the foreground. The world just can't keep up loading all the cuteness.
In context, the U.S. is estimated to have roughly 90.5 million homes, or 70% of the total number of households that own a pet. Among these, there are more dog owners than there are cat owners.
The good news is that there are about 4.1 million animals that end up adopted from shelters each year, with more stray dogs than cats returning to their actual owners per year. So, the ball is definitely rolling.
Today, I Adopted Two 8 Week Old Kittens Who Are Brothers. I Originally Applied For One But When I Got The Call About Being Accepted To Adopt, I Was Asked If I Wanted To Adopt The Brothers Together Because The People Adopting His Brother Backed Out. Meet Kingston And Derby!
The rescue centres really know emotional blackmail! I went looking for a kitten to keep my older lady cat company after her brother died. The shelter staff said it would be better to take two kittens so they grew together and wouldn't be left alone when older lady passed. That made sense, so I said OK, I could home two. As luck would have it, they'd had a pregnant stray brought in a few weeks ago and her kittens were looking for new homes. There were three left....it was such a shame that I was taking two, because that would mean a little one would be left on his own. And that's how I got talked into adopting three kittens.
For rescue centres read vets here. You go in with your old rescue dog, who just happens to adore the vet and his technicians (she has her own special treats drawer I swear).....and come out with two abandoned kittens....
Load More Replies...Awww, I’m glad they were adopted together and went to a loving home.
This Is Ruger. We Rescued Him In August. He Was Found In A Box On The Side Of The Road. No Fault Of His Own. This Poor Boy Would Have Died. I Can't Even Think Of It Without Crying. He Is Now One Of Our Children And Will Never Go Anywhere Else
Just the thought of getting our dog girl into the car, putting her out somewhere, leaving her behind and looking back into these eyes and her tilted head trying to understand what is going on makes me sick. How would ever someone do this and then going on with life, feeling no guilt?
Whenever you have the torches and pitchforks ready - let me know - I'm in.
Load More Replies...I have thoughts about people who abandon pets like that, but I am sure that BP would have to edit my words to those people. What an adorable baby. Glad you found her.
Both of my dogs were rescues, and I know nothing of their lives before they were with me. There are times I really wish I knew so I could avoid anything that might stress them out (which I am pretty sure doesnt happen anyway), but I also really, really do not want to know what they went through.
I try to be nice and not judgemental, but I really wish seriously unpleasant karma on these perpetrators, and all of their ilk.
Horrible people in the world! To do these things to a sweet defenseless animal is just the ugliest kind of person!
Charlie! He Was My Sober Gift To Myself. 130 Days Alcohol Free Today :)
Yes, but this is his win. I commend him.
Load More Replies...He'll give you more purpose to stay sober. Good on you OP if you ever see this.
However, the fact that there are still around a million dogs and cats who get euthanized annually means that there isn’t enough adoption and population control happening.
It’s not to say that things aren’t happening. The leap from 2010 to 2022 of the number of households that owned pets was 14 million—73 to 87 million. But more has to be done.
This Cat Was Abandoned And This Is His Photo Minutes After Being Rescued
I completely agree. I feel tears and I just want to hold this baby and cry that he's now found happiness.
Load More Replies...I think that's the one thing that would turn me into a homicidal maniac: seeing someone abandoning their pet. I wouldn't be responsible for my actions.
I can’t fathom how someone can abandon their pet. Losing my kitty would just about kill me.

My Cat Had Anxiety Issues, So We Adopted A Little Sister For Him
My girl cat’s anxiety is caused by her brother. I think she wishes to be an only child some days.
OMG, same with mine XD I adopted Preacher 3 years ago when my girl Kohl was 5, so she'd have a snuggle buddy. Preacher is the quintessential "annoying little brother". He pokes her in the butt as she walks by. He will inch closer and closer into her personal space while she growls. They have not snuggled once XD I'd hoped that Preacher would settle down once he got a little older... nope XD They do play together, and can happily lay within a few feet of each other, but cuddle? Nope XD Kohl wasn't always an only cat, either - but HER big sis Wintressia was a stately old lady of 17 when I found kitten Kohl in a parking lot, and Win died two years later :(
Load More Replies...She'll be the boss: Little sisters just naturally are. Mine is still, after many decades!
Folks consider the decline in euthanizing shelter animals to be a hopeful sign. One of the main factors for this decline is adoption and stray animal-owner reunions. However, when the minimum required period to keep an animal in a shelter is as low as 48 hours, with the typical being 5 to 7 days, time is of the essence. Also, just 5 states—California, Florida, Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina—alone are responsible for half of the euthanasia.
As A Single Dad, I Had To Put My Foot Down And Tell My Seven Year Old Daughter That There Was No Way She Was Getting A Dog For Chanukah, No Matter How Much She Asked. Anyway, Meet Waffle
Everybody reading this story knew exactly how it was going to end! Waffle is adorable!
Yeah, my mom said no too when I showed up with a dog. Then she picked him up and was immediately won over with puppy kisses.
Harvey’s Skinny Body Was Found Abandoned In A Ditch, Soaking Wet, And Dotted With Cigarette Burns. He Was Infested With Fleas, Anemic, And Starving. One Look At His Little Face And I Knew Had To Adopt Him. Fast Forward 5 Years, He’s Now A Confident, Happy, Healthy Boi With A Career In Modelling
People who hurt animals deserve to be locked away behind bars for eons . I’m so glad this cute, little one found a loving home. Harvey is such an adorable cat with one heck of a great mustache.
If we find the people who did this, we can take turns where one of us sits on them to hold them down while the other manages the cigarettes—-maybe even throw in a nice fat cigar as a flourish. (Sorry. I’m not a violent person, but cruelty to animals just makes me see red and crave eye for an eye type revenge.)
Load More Replies...Who in the world could burn a sweet little kitten with cigarettes?! The wickedness of some people never ceases to amaze me!
It's standard serial killer training. Evil, cowardly people taking advantage of helpless, little souls.
Load More Replies...I have no issue going to jail for beating someone who so richly deserves it. If you hurt an animal, you deserve it.
Colby = Biggest Love Muffin Ever. 💗 All He Wants Is Pets. ...but People Are Usually Afraid Of Him. So, He'll Just Stare At You In Adoration Until You Pet Him. Rescue Doggo
I don’t think I could resist Colby’s smile. I would totally have to pet him.
He does look like a big baby, wants to be lap dog, I bet, thanks for the rescue !!!
There are, of course, no-kill shelters who keep animals around indefinitely, with the exception of the ones who are terminally ill or suffer from poor quality of life. However, they do go out of their way to make sure every animal finds a forever home and the no-kill shelter count has actually increased over the years, which is another hopeful sign on the matter.

In just 6 years, the number of no-kill shelters in the U.S. has more than doubled, jumping from 24% to 57% between 2016 and 2022.
This in turn means that 42% of counties in the U.S. are officially no-kill zones for pets, and 93% of all no-kill shelters have managed to sustain their goals of not euthanizing animals in 2021.
Adopted Her Today! Finally Peeking Out Of The Couch
A couple of days ago, we just adopted an 11 year old that has been in the shelter for 10 years. For that 1 year, she was a stray. As of today, she is accepting treats and sardines and will smell hands. Still hisses if you try to touch her. The history at the shelter was that she has been very slow to warm up to anyone. But as of today, she's in the fort I made her and is not running under the bed as fast when I come in the room. We are expecting micro-milimeter progress. We will get there eventually.
Now this is a normal post adoption picture for me. I'm used to having to search for the new adoption in all small spaces, with a flashlight...

An experiment was run where there were two groups of "researchers" who were the test subjects, told they would be studying different rats. One group was told their rats were extremely intelligent and had shown signs of incredible understanding. The other group was told their rats were pretty stupid and didn't understand even basic mazes. Guess what happened? The group with the "good" rats praised them, gave them little extra treats, placed them gently into their homes and mazes, and gave them extra affection. The "bad" rats were taken from place to place by their tails, tossed into their mazes and homes, barely got picked up, and never got treats. The results were the "good" rats performed excellently and the "bad" rats did very poorly, some even not completing mazes the true researchers knew the rats knew. Some things are very much due to nature, but a whole f**k ton is due to nurture.
A huge chunk of cases of adoption are attributed to the need for companionship. 47% of families who adopted pets reported that they wanted a pet and so they got one, with 25% specifying that they wanted a friend. 47% said that it was just the right time and circumstance to finally adopt as they were spending more time indoors.

Meet Lucy. Our 5 Year Old, Recently Adopted Spaz With A Zest For Life And A Need For Constant Belly Rubs. I Hope She Makes Someone Smile
Maybe. When our cat shows you her belly, it's an invitation to play 'touch the armpit,' the goal of which is to touch the little white spot under her armpit without getting claws sunk into your hand. Not recommended if the murder mittens haven't been trimmed recently.

We Rescued A Terrified Australian Shepherd As A Friend For Our Dog. Now He Doesn't Leave His Side
That's exactly how my older dog (Star) is. Only calming down when by comfort people. When we got our younger dog (Hailey) we were so worried, but they are great together. Star is terrified of fireworks and you can't get between them when they hear one. Hailey will knock your àss over to get to her big sister and cuddle with her.
Load More Replies...One of the bigger reasons why folks don’t opt for having pets at all is the amount of responsibility it entails. And much of it leans on the cost of having a pet. Luckily, there’s a thing called pet insurance (no, it’s not like volcano insurance), which can have reimbursements of up to 90%. So, no more oopsie daisies off the shelf when making that impossible jump, Mr. Whiskers.

Load More Replies...There’s nothing worse than someone betraying your trust in them. An animal that trusts humans and then is abused by them has to know that feeling all too well. It is always such a joyous thing to find out they went from that low of feeling like maybe they deserved that cruelty (abuse totally f***s with your psyche, and sometimes abused people rationalize why the abuse happened by thinking they maybe deserved it—-even though they definitely did not) to someone good coming along and reassuring them that no, they definitely did not deserve it, that they were 100% innocent—-and now they’re a survivor who is going to live out the rest of their life safe, secure, and very very much loved and cherished.
I just cannot believe some humans......Anyway, this beautiful dog is safe and loved and healed and away from unkind ness.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

We Adopted A Pair Of Kittens Today. My Husband Was A Little Worried About How They'd Do With Our Dog.. He's No Longer Concerned
All these amazing living beings. Eyes so full of love and gratitude. Such a beautiful piece.
I adopted a wonderful little black cat in July of last year, and today I had to have him put to sleep because of felv. Greatest little guy in the world. I'll miss ya, buddy.
With these posts I often wonder how many of these are actual adoptions, i.e. from a shelter or similar. There are a lot of puppies and kittens of desirable or expensive breeds on these lists, and you don't normally find those in shelters. I think some people use the phrase "adopt" somewhat losely!
And what is wrong about this anyway? If we get a pet, for the most of us it is a family member. You take care of it, you feed it and you watch it grow and conquer the world. So what is wrong calling it adoption? For our girl my husband an I are called mum and dad and if I talk to her I either call her little sparrow or my child.
