Very often we might hear two names that refer to turtles. These are turtle and tortoise. What is the difference between these two creatures? The main difference is that turtles mainly live in water and only appear on land occasionally, while tortoises live only on land. They also differ in their appearance: while turtles are flat and light, tortoises are found to be thicker and heavier. It is known that turtles live from 20 to 40 years while tortoises live longer: from 60 to 80 years.

It might seem that turtles are easier to take care of than other pets that need to be watched all the time, taken outside at least twice a day, and in need of special foods or vitamins. These creatures also require special care. One of the main reasons why it is important to think before getting a turtle as a pet is that it carries salmonella bacteria that can be transmitted to people.

Volunteers Form A Human Wall To Guide Baby Turtles To The Sea
On the first day of July at 4pm, just 52 days after laying, 112 loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings began to climb to the top of their nest in the sand. STCB had Beachkeepers watching closely, as this nest is at risk from the airport lights which can disorientate hatchlings.
When several mini heads appeared above the sand STCB shaded the nest to prevent the hatchlings dehydrating in the hot sand. We then waited until the sun was going down and hatching took place. Here are the images from hatching. Thank you to all the volunteers who formed a human wall to allow the small loggerheads to make their way to the sea in safety.

For turtles to grow and be happy with the place they are in, they need the right lighting and temperature, as well as filtered water. Having in mind how long turtles live, people should really think before getting one. And even if the responsibility does not scare you, it is recommended to get a turtle from an animal shelter.

Sometimes people come to the realization that they won’t be able to take care of their pet and the best way to act in this case is to contact an animal shelter or animal rescue group. It is forbidden to let them loose thinking that they will be able to take care of themselves back in the wild. This is not allowed as turtles carry diseases and can affect other turtles. Also, very often, letting a turtle out into the wild means that they are not going to make it on their own.

Actually no... it's more likely they he s**t after he flipped. That's what happens. Their insides are compressing on his Bowels. So he's forced to poop. So it's more likely that he got flipped over and while trying to flip back over he s**t everywhere ... considering the turd on his foot isn't smashed. I'm willing to bet there's also poop on his back/side that would explain the train around his shell. That's from him trying to flip back over. His lungs are also super compressed right now making it extremely hard to breathe, like having 20lbs of bricks on ur chest. Not funny. So by all means, go grab your phone and take a photo while your tortoise is slowly suffocating. I have 8 tortoises of all sizes and I've seen this seen too many times. Doesn't matter the size, gender. This happens all the time. That's how I know that he s**t afterwards. If he s**t and got it stuck on his foot and then flipped over.. why isn't there a big smeared spot from the initial poop!?

The house I rented in Greece had its own turtle in the yard. I would feed him tomatoes that he loved to push around, digging in when it finally met a wall. Then he would walk around with mushed up tomato on his nose the rest of the day.

We Were Able To Release 170 Hatchlings Today In One Of Our Locations
It is always a calming and satisfying feeling releasing the hatchlings back to where they eggs were laid. All that hard work in the beating sun, watching the females trek through the summer heat, flies, dangerous traffic, predators, and human encroachment... all for the sake of these hatchlings to make it back to the water.

Stormageddon: Dark Lord Of All, The African Side-Neck Turtle
This is Stormageddon: Dark Lord of All. She’s an African Side-neck Turtle! I rescued her about 16 months ago from really bad living conditions. She was two years old when I got her, and she didn’t know how to swim, didn’t know how to use her swim bladder, didn’t have an appetite for close to 3 months! We had a few trips to the vet, a near drowning that left me sleeping by her tank the whole night to keep an eye on her till morning, different vitamin injections, and a good ol dose of extra warm water in her tank ❤️ And about 4 months after adopting her, she’s ravenous when she eats, she swims like a champ (although the guppies in her tank still regularly out swim her), she’s SO energetic and playful in the water. She doesn’t like being outside of the water and is very nervous outside of it (which is one of the nuts things because where she was living for 2 years before me was in 2 inches of dirty water in a 10 gal tank 😬). Her previous owners claimed she just didn’t like swimming that much! She’s definitely a water baby. Anyway, I’m so extremely proud of her and how far she’s come, and she’s so sweet and so beautiful I really just wanted to share a little bit about her and show everyone this picture that I hope puts a smile on your faces! I was informed I should not let my tortoises hibernate but give them a heat lamp in winter.

They don't need to hibernate if you can provide the right heat and light conditions indoors and have a varied food supply. Hibernation is hard to stimulate and you have to starve them for a few weeks beforehand. They also must be monitored closely for weightloss in hibernation or you'll be finding a dead tortoise come spring. My advice is to read up very carefully on both and decide what you can provide best.

I saw a lady trying to pick up a snapping turtle as big as a steering wheel. It was trying to cross the road, but she couldn't get a hold of it because it kept stretching it's head around to bite her. I stopped and got out some moving blankets that were in the back of my car and grabbed him up. He could bite the blanket all he wanted, but he wasn't getting me. Helped him to finish his journey across the street and he seemed less than grateful for the assist.

Awwwww. One of my favorite turtles. There's a pond near me that's an oasis for these guys. I've never seen them anywhere else in the wild.

A British Gas repairman stole my tortoise when I was around 14yo. I'm still not happy about that, I'd had him since I was in nursery school. BG didn't want to know.

I love turtles and tortoises!!! 😍 a baby of the rarest one a kemp’s ridley turtle washed up in a storm on the beach near where i live in the uk, luckily the baby was rescued im helping fundraise to send them back to mexico when theyve recovered

Swell! I've volunteered for Sea Turtle Inc. based in South Padre Island off what is now the Texas coast before. The Kemp is main turtle for our region. Glad that you're helping to return them home :D

Love all turtles, tortoises etc. But seing them kept as pets makes me sad. Many/most are still removed from the wild, and all of those in the pics above won't have a chance to have babies and are disconnected from their habitats. From a conservation standpoint, it's like a slow motion carnage. 😣
