To find out more about bulldogs and the misconceptions and controversy about this dog breed, we spoke with Ryan Neil, the Blue Cross head of animal behavior services and Roisin Bolger, Blue Cross veterinary research, standards and communications lead.
Ryan explained that the common misconception about bulldogs that they’re aggressive dogs is false. “Early socialization is key. Helping puppies of any breed get used to the world around them in a positive way will help them in later life,” he explained.
Moreover, “like many breeds, their original purpose has changed over the years and bulldogs are now bred and kept as family pets.” Ryan assured that “they are not inherently violent or aggressive.”

This is sad. Why do people continue to breed this type of dog with these obvious breathing problems, coupled with other health problems? This dog looks deeply unhappy and unhealthy. This is cruel and inhumane. You generally should breed dogs with longer snouts if you are going to breed at all.

Yes. The tongue is not out because it's cute - it's out because it doesn't fit in the mouth! It's probably dried-out because of that. It can develop necrosis from that. But sure... cute. (I just feel sad for the dog. It's not his fault and he's probably a very nice dog but it's deeply unsettling to find this deformation 'cute'. It's debilitating and terrible. Every-single-breath-is-a-struggle? Yeah. Very cute :-( )

i love how the owner put a sign reassuring ppl its ok to pet their dog. my dog on the other hand ppl have asked to pet her and i feel bad wen i say no. i just dont want the chance of her biting or scaring someone shes not great with strangers. ptsd unfortunately, had a bad first owner. i hate it even more wen i have to say no to a kid. my dog is sorta ok with kids but only like 5 and younger bc they r around her height or smaller so she isnt scared like she is with adult strangers but still id never take the chance

I feel you on that one. I had a gorgeous white German Shepherd that people always commented on how beautiful he was, but no one could come near him- especially if I was around. We never taught him to be protective, but even as a small pup, he didn't like strangers and would not abide anyone coming near. He never bit anyone in the almost 8 years I was his human, but like you, I had to turn Away many would be 'petters'

This was posted on reddit (naturally) and has been absolutely destroyed as nothing but a cheap karma grab.
When asked about why bulldogs (both British and French) are often viewed as controversial dog breeds, Roisin Bolger, the veterinary research expert, said that it has to do with poor breeding and their many health issues. “Dogs who have been bred to have a flat face are known as brachycephalic and will all struggle to breathe due to shortened and narrowed airways. They can quickly overheat and some even need surgery to their nostrils, palate and larynx to help them survive.”
Their health issues don’t end there. “They also have oversized heads, which means they struggle to give birth naturally and many need an emergency cesarean because puppies become stuck. The folds in their skin and position of their eyes also cause them problems and they can develop uncomfortable skin and eye conditions which can involve extensive medical treatment,” Roisin told Bored Panda.
She also added that “in the UK, British bulldogs are famously associated with Winston Churchill and a spirit of defiance and pride.”

The prefix 'bull' is in the name to describe the dog's use in the 'sport' of bull-baiting, on which we won't elaborate due to its violent nature. When the Cruelty to Animals Act was passed in 1835, the Bulldogs lost their purpose and popularity. However, thanks to one Bill George, a dog dealer in Victorian London, Bulldogs gained popularity as pet dogs.

You do realize he is plotting his revenge that will be brought up at the next Meeting of the Mutts. Cats, birds, babies have been meeting as well and all will come together before Halloween to exchange latest ideas for the day us humans will be wearing the ridiculous outfits that we've put our pets in for years. Now, some fun facts:
- One Bulldog can produce around a quarter of a gallon of saliva per day. So carrying a towel at all times might be a great idea!
- No other dog breed can clear a room as fast as a Bulldog who farted. This breed is definitely a winner in the gassiest dogs contest. And though it might seem funny, the Bulldog's anatomy is to blame for this inconvenience - they have sensitive stomachs that make digesting food hard work.
- A Bulldog's wrinkles once had a real purpose - as a participant of blood sports, the wrinkles guarded these dogs against bites and blood getting into their eyes.
- A Bulldog named Otto has a Guinness World Record under his belt (or should I say wrinkles?). In 2015, he broke the record of "Longest Human Tunnel Traveled Through by a Skateboarding Dog," which he managed to do in around 19 seconds!

English bulldog puppy Max, whom I don t know much (be a person, we don´t use first name) stays with me through a car accident of my husband. I wasn´t there from the beginning, I couldn´t go to the ambulance car to my husband and we waited more than 45 min, to depart the car to the hospital (all special chirurgical clinics were full). The little angel stayed with me and gave me comfort ALL THE TIME. My husband died after 4 months of martyrium ago.

you are absolutly right. But the whole merle gene itself is not the problem. Only if mom and dad are both carriers auf the merle genome it can end very badly for the puppies. Sadly i think this is what happend here. The blue of the eyes is a strong indicator.

Rescue-bulldogs exist. Rescue-bulldogs are also the (for me) acceptable way to own a bulldog, because anything else encourages people to produce more and more of dogs with severe health-issues. (And yes, that includes "reputable breeders")

This is a good (better) bulldog-face. Look at this, compare with some of those others on here and notice: the longer snout, the wide, open nostrils, un-skin-covered nose, skin-free eyes. Might not be completely healthy (hips, legs, elbows are other weak points of the breeds) but at least it won't feel as if it's suffocating all its life.

Not just brachycephalic dogs, but almost all dogs. This is why I detest the AKC. They could have a huge impact if they would rewrite the breed standards to prevent this kind of thing. Look at poor King Charles Cavaliers...they have brains too big for their skulls now... or "Rhodesian" ridgebacks, where the healthy dogs are supposed to be culled. There are some breeders now trying to undo some of the damage, but it will take generations of effort.

For once I could not enjoy puppy pictures because it is evident in almost every picture how much breeders have destroyed these dogs and hence their abilty to breathe and eat and often to walk.

We all agree despite cuteness we understand what suffering is behind this breeding. All of us together have ability to stop it. There are now also breeders who return to older healthier standards, or breeders focusing on working dogs standard instead of exterior only and so called primitive breeds which are less influenced by fashion overbreeding. And let's do not forget adopting is best option from all.

Nope, nope, NOPE! Half of these have already been bread so much they can't breathe properly and have all sorts of health issues, before dying a painful death at a young age. The other half are bred full well knowing that the mother cannot give birth, the pups respiratory tracts will not be healthy and they will likely be in pain a large percentage of their lives. This is not a good list and unless there are a few rescues among them all the dog owners in this list can go to hell!

We’ve adopted a rescue Frenchie who was being used in a puppy farm, she was kept in a cage for a few years and just used to breed from / profit from. She’s got all kinds of weird issues from her time being cooped up but she’s a lovely character and is awesome with children. Can’t say we’d have one if we couldn’t have had a rescue dog, they’ve got so many issues with their breathing and the likes, the kennel clubs ought to be ashamed of what they promote / have created. Her partner in crime here is a Staffie / Whippet cross plus sone other weird dog DNA and he’s indestructible, his mongrel genes will benefit him. Love the dogs, they have nothing to be ashamed of, hate the humans that breed such ridiculous animals.

What stereotype? That they're docile, lazy bums? I think people just wanted to show off their dog ;) This breed doesn't have a bad connotation, unless you count how humans treat them by breeding them into suffering.

Not just brachycephalic dogs, but almost all dogs. This is why I detest the AKC. They could have a huge impact if they would rewrite the breed standards to prevent this kind of thing. Look at poor King Charles Cavaliers...they have brains too big for their skulls now... or "Rhodesian" ridgebacks, where the healthy dogs are supposed to be culled. There are some breeders now trying to undo some of the damage, but it will take generations of effort.

For once I could not enjoy puppy pictures because it is evident in almost every picture how much breeders have destroyed these dogs and hence their abilty to breathe and eat and often to walk.

We all agree despite cuteness we understand what suffering is behind this breeding. All of us together have ability to stop it. There are now also breeders who return to older healthier standards, or breeders focusing on working dogs standard instead of exterior only and so called primitive breeds which are less influenced by fashion overbreeding. And let's do not forget adopting is best option from all.

Nope, nope, NOPE! Half of these have already been bread so much they can't breathe properly and have all sorts of health issues, before dying a painful death at a young age. The other half are bred full well knowing that the mother cannot give birth, the pups respiratory tracts will not be healthy and they will likely be in pain a large percentage of their lives. This is not a good list and unless there are a few rescues among them all the dog owners in this list can go to hell!

We’ve adopted a rescue Frenchie who was being used in a puppy farm, she was kept in a cage for a few years and just used to breed from / profit from.
