The act of writing the paper is the important part, not the paper itself. Research, analysis, organization, expressing ideas using evidence, forming and supporting a thesis, writing, and editing. It's not about the product, its about demonstrating that you can make the product.

In the US I think our current school system had a part in creating this problem. The "No Child Left Behind" initiative had good intentions but ended up often forcing teachers to "teach to the test" rather than explore subjects more deeply. When kids grow up thinking the test is the important part, that is a problem.

5 yrs retired as a HS teacher, so I didn't have to face this. As a mental exercise, I try to figure out how I'd handle this. I'd strongly support students using it for tutoring. Since I taught math and science, grading would be on in-class testing only. Homework research would work if it was used for classroom discussion and graded as participation. Term papers might be OK for class presentation, but not graded for completeness, structure, etc, only used as participated/not participated. I have no idea if this would work, and fully expect I'd have to modify it.

Even if it is practical, useful, fast: every time you use AI to do stuff, you miss an opportunity to learn and make connections and pathways in you brain. You deprive yourself of the acquisition of skills. But a college degree should be evidence of exactly that. That is the problem of AI use in college and in general.

I told students never to use AI to completely write or even format their bibliography. The universal response is "why should I learn to do it if the AI can just do it for me". To which I really wanted to reply (but did this more diplomatically), "Because then you wouldn't be the complete moronic d*****s who didn't notice that AI decided the author was a random website." Instead I asked them to click on the link for the article cited, asked them to look at the top of said website, and try to identify for me the title and author. Neither of which was captured in the bibliography by the AI. "Do you think YOU would fail to notice the author and title?" Part me of thought this was laziness, part of me wanted to think this was stupidity. As much as teachers complain that current students don't have attention spans, etc., I think inspiring teaching can solve all of that. What teaching can't seem to solve is their fundamental belief that content creation is someone else's job. That's it.

Because all students really use AI for is outsourcing their thinking. We've already eliminated most of the memorization involved in schooling. Are we really planning to eliminate the thinking as well? What the hell is left?

Maybe this is simply my age speaking, but I see no difference between using AI, having another person write your work, or plain old cheating. Nothing is learned even though the course is passed.

In all seriousness, though, in my world, if someone gives me something that bears a positive significance to them, regardless of whether it aligns with my persuasions or not, I feel grateful and thank them. It's their way of showing kindness, gratitude and care. That's what counts, not the item itself. It's of significance to them, as should their act be to you.

I live on the Isle of Wight (a little island off the south coast of England) and people over here have a ridiculously distorted sense of distance. A couple of weeks ago, I travelled to a place about 40 minutes' drive away, and the people I was visiting were amazed and impressed by my strength and determination in making such an epic journey. Jokes were made about needing my passport. I was, and remain, bewildered.

I would also pay for this. I honestly have no idea what people think of me, I seem to get along with everyone and have fun casual interactions with people, but that's it. In my 40's, I started caving ("spelunking"), and have been in well over 100 wild caves, deep pits, etc. And now there is a smell that I never smelled before, but come across occasionally above ground. Difficult to describe, but like a wet black garbage back, no exactly musty, but .... A brand new smell in my mid-40's is just weird. I'm sure I have come across wet trash bags before, but never this odor. Weird.
