There are pros and cons to having access to every piece of information at your fingertips. While it is convenient to simply pull out your phone if you need an important question answered, the downside is that you come across facts you wish you didn’t have to know.
Take these responses to a recent Reddit thread as an example. While most of them are trivial, a handful are shocking enough to make you think for a good few days. Before you know it, you’re doing your own deep dives, for better or worse.

I can't tell you how often the wilderness has been so quiet that I could easily hear, despite my tennitis, the sound of caterpillars chewing the leaves and insect droppings falling to the leaves below. I doubt they go silent because there is a predator about. However, I'm OK with the notion that when formerly noisy larger animals (including birds as animals, not just beasts) go quiet, that could be scary.

Depends on the wilderness. I guess there might be wildernesses where this might be scary. But here in Estonia we only predators of mention are wolves and bears. Wolves here have not attacked humans for 100 years and our bears are a joke. Last bear I met ran when I offered her an apple.

If anybody is afraid of predators heres the trick I use when Im picking berries (when I was a kid my dad convinced me bears sneak up on people to scare them and steal their berries - I still get nervous when in forest and have lots of berries in my basket😂) Talk loudly to yourself. I usually comment on how few berries I have and that I should get some bear meat instead. But I doubt bears actually understand much Estonian so no matter what you say. This way you will not accidentally get too close to an animal and they have time to sneak away (they usually do) + they will think you have more people with you or might think you are too crazy to mess with. The last 2 aspects work with human predators too btw.

I was in wilderness numerous times, but the no sound is a bit of stretch. There will be wind noise, trees, rivers, stream. By no noise by animals - well, this depends on actual location. I was again in wilderness, where was no animal noise, yet no danger of any large predator, as none lives in Ireland.

To be honest, I think the majority of men also don't want to talk to someone when they have a crisis. Guys are often like, "I'll get myself out of this myself," and find the prospect of having to ask for help to be disempowering.

There's so much talk about the male 'loneliness epidemic', but none about the fact that this is of their own making. Nobody, I repeat nobody, is preventing you from starting interest groups or being more social. Women have refuges, support groups etc because we get up and organise.

That’s not always true. I’ve known many men who don’t have many people to talk to because they were abused by parents and grandparents or other trusted authority figures growing up. The messaging often included that they were not real men if they expressed emotion freely and were often told that silence was better than looking weak.

People don't get upset if morbidly obese people take medication to combat obesity. But most people find it infuriating when people whose weight is normal or almost normal take d***s to lose a lot of weight and look skinny just for fashion or vanity, especially if they claim they lost lots of weight just dieting and exercising.

In my country approx 90% of all femicide is by partner. The rest is family member. We do have the occasional other - like 1-2 cases per year, but basically you are safer walking out in dark than sleeping in your bed with your partner.

I don't agree with you. The men who do it DO tell us that they are like this in advance. There are ALWAYS signs, sometimes very subtle, that their partners "choose" to ignore. Unfortunately, I know several women who were in a*****e relationships, and all of them admitted (after counselling and therapy) there were red flags from the very beginning.

In the US the youngest states are 16 (30 of them, with 13 of them having 18 and 7 for age 17), but 12 EU Countries have it as young as 14! Another 9 at 15years, and the rest (except Ireland which is 17) have it at 16! That means in most of Europe it's legal for an Adult to have s*x with a someone 14 or 15. WTF!?! And also there are placed younger than 12. While the official Yemeni govt age is 13, the Houthi controlled areas are 9, which is also the age of marriage (so for all those who went to rallied chanting for the Houthi's, that is what you chanted for). And the Taliban changed Afghanistan from 16 to puberty.

Yup. If I recall correctly, a person will meet thirty-six people who have killed another person in his or her lifetime. I believe that statistic refers to serial killers specifically. Either way, it’s disconcerting and horrifying to consider!

From the dissections I've attended, it's not the blood - that smells like old iron - it's the mucus that helps your organs slide over eachother. It's a VERY weird smell, and incredibly off-putting.

This point has come up every time he's been tabbed to direct a movie in thirty-five years (the events in question happened on the set of Clownhouse (1988)). I think it's pretty obvious by this point that Hollywood doesn't give a d**n. (He's made ten films since then, and has one in pre-production as of July 2025.)

No real way of knowing that for sure, though, y'know? I mean, we can see where there's brain activity, but not all brain activity in an area corresponds one-to-one with functionality. It's one reason they keep people awake during brain surgery: so they know they're not touching some place that's doing something they didn't know it was doing.

A friend works at a humane shelter. The local police department uses the incinerator there to dispose of old evidence they don't need I guess. Sometimes you close the door and hit the button and it sounds like it fires up but it doesn't, occasionally. He tells me he opened it once and it had not cycled so there was a LOT of contraband. Mostly hard substances. I assume he notified the authorities right away. If indeed he was telling me the truth.

I once interviewed the city coroner when I worked for a small community newspaper.
He said that in cases where they think something suspicious or fishy happened with a death--k****d to get an inheritance or something--90% of the time they're right. Ninety percent. I really had no idea so many people k****d family members for gain.

My great-garnpa and great-grandma on the maternal side both had 11 siblings. In one family, four, in the other, five kids survived into adulthood. The couple was luckier than their parents, only one child died out of five. In general, in the first decades of the 20th century, child mortality varied between 20 to 50 percent. The simple fact that we grew up was not a given even a few decades ago. Just we don't know when we didn't go down with diphteria.

I worked in a nusring home as a teen. Saintly Grace's hour finally came and we were preparing her body for the funeral director, which involved cleaning up the inevitable final discharge, fresh bedding and a clean gown. Linda and I were on opposite sides of the bed and we went to slide Grace's body up onto the pillows in a reposed resting position. As we lifted the body by the knees and the armpits, Grace's head fell back, her mouth fell open, and the eeriest sepulchral growl burst out. Linda didn't stop running until she got to the emergency door about 50 yards down the hall. I somehow crossed the bed behind me without any awareness and found myself pressed against the far wall. Grace just stayed there without further comment.

I've heard a rabbit scream and it's every bit as awful as people say. A hawk stooped down to grab a small rabbit, not seeing the 2"x4" wire fencing in the twilight, and was trying to drag it through the fence by the ear. It took me a minute to figure out what was happening and by the time I took a few steps, the hawk took off. The rabbit had a pretty good nick on his ear but all visible evidence was gone in a few months. Truly a heart rending sound.

So did I. I thought the local news was reporting on someone else when I heard his name a few months ago. No, the local media was not reporting on someone else murdering his grandparents. Our community was shocked and saddened because the young man was kind to everyone growing up and to know him was to be his friend, more or less. His grandparents were the same way and were truly good to their grandson. Fortunately, they passed quickly, to my understanding, so may not have felt much pain. The young man is awaiting trial presently, as I recall.

I lived across the street from a man who m******d his landlord with the help of another man. then they buried her in the basement of one of his properties. My dad used to have coffee with him in our kitchen. Nice guy when he wasn’t braining old women with a shovel. Police showed up one night and arrested him. Edited because I got something wrong, he was her landlord. I just went and looked it up. Apparently he ran a c*****e ring, as well. He was 32 but apparently really involved in organized crime in the area. My dad was a college professor, and this man was apparently really bright but super dangerous. My dad was so shocked he told me the entire story. I was 12 so he probably shouldn’t have but needless to say the idea that you could be hanging out with a m******r became just part of my childhood.

There is a very interesting theory about the bibles "Plague of the Firstborn" and a potential carbon monoxide bubble bursting from a nearby water source. stated that the first born Egyptian sons slept in beds closers to the floor, while their siblings slept on rooftops, So after the gas killed the first born sons, it would then rise upwards and dissipate into the air by the time it reached the rooftops, and would be virtually harmless to the other sleeping children. This would explain why the first born sons died and their siblings did not. I am not arguing or trying to disprove anything, I just think it is a very interesting theory.

Otto Warmbier was on a group tour of No. Korea in January 2016. He was pulled out of line at the airport as he was headed home. He was detained and accused of stealing a poster with Kim Jong’s name on it. He was beaten, tortured and forced to give a confession written in stilted English (he claimed to have been tasked to steal the poster by a church “deaconess” in exchange for money when in fact he was Jewish). He was put on trial & sentenced to 17 years hard labor. Since there are no diplomatic relations with NK, the State Dept. could not intervene. 17 months later, NK suddenly announced he was ill and would be returned to his family. His head was shaved & he was blind, deaf and incoherently screaming. Parts of his brain were missing w/o surgery, which is thought to be the result of waterboarding. He lapsed into a coma and his family removed him from life support, and he died in June 2017. No explanation was ever revealed as to why he was targeted.

His parents would not allow an autopsy. The coroner visually examined his body and based on that, concluded that she could not see any t*****e conditions. Without an autopsy, there is no way to determine if part of his brain was missing.

I'm not sure why that's creepy. That's what you're supposed to be able to see at night. It's only in towns and cities that manmade lights change that. The night wasn't 'so dark'. It was like any night in the middle of an ocean before the moon rises/after it sets.

That you don't see much about anything else. The eyes are only good for a rough estimation of the size and shape of the objects in that low light, and only from the corner of your eye. The fovea, the central part of the retina cannot detect anything.

Not just your eyelashes. They live in hair follicles and oil glands. So face, neck, scalp too. Can live on other parts of the body. Just head/neck have the most. There's also microorganisms in your GI tract. Not sure why having mostly helpful/harmless beings on you is creepy.

Working in a nursing home. This dinky old biddy, the sort of rag and bones that spent years barely on the side of the living decided as her last hurrah she was going to fight death with everything she had. So there was screaming, her flailing around like she was possessed, dark red liquid pouring from her nose and eyes, breaking her own bones, the wall, and managing to bend the steel rails around her bed. It was all over in a couple of minutes and there was blood, also oddly dark, *everywhere*. Two of the carers had wet themselves, one fainted, and one just put her hand over her mouth and threw up down the front of her dress. The on duty nurse came in, said something that doesn't bear repeating, and sent us all to drink a hell of a lot of tea while she called the mortuary and warned them what they would find. Then she and I (me, because I worked for an agency and this place was cliquish) dragged her body back into the right sort of shape before rigor mortis started. Holyyyyyy fffff....

Nurse had no sense of humour and we didn't like each other (she couldn't understand why a man was doing a woman's job) so for the rest of the evening I made as many direct and indirect references to exorcisms as I possibly could. And since I don't actually know that much about the subject other than the hokum in various movies, I threw in vampire and zombie lore (but avoided using the words vampire and zombie because it's just creepier if you don't name the obvious fiction).

I mean if they're not causing you a reaction, they're not really a problem I guess. It's the same with fleas btw. Neither my parents nor my dog had any reaction to fleas. We found out he'd picked them up when I came home for a year abroad, was greeted enthusiastically by my dog, and ended up covered with itchy bites. House got thoroughly cleaned with anti flea stuff and vacuumed, dog got it's first and second ever baths and flea treatment from the vet, and I had an uncomfortable few days lol.

I was told that dog and cat fleas do not bite humans, but I guess not every human has a reaction then. I also get reactions all the time - so I buy extra flea drops for the stray cats in our area that let me close enough to apply the drops. For self defense. Back in the 70s, when my mom was in h**h school, she dated a guy who was the captain of a rival h**h school's basketball team. The following year, he and two friends abducted 3 teenage girls, m******d them, and hid their bodies in the woods.
Another interesting fact is that the killers hosed down the trunk of the m****r car at the same car wash I used to go to when I lived in that town, and they also bought the rope that was used in the crime at a hardware store where my brother used to work.
And yet another interesting fact is that one of the 3 killers was arrested by my next door neighbor, who was a young State Police corporal at the time.
Amazingly, I only learned of this about 3 years ago reading a true crime blog.

Yup. It is dead easy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, a battery and two bits of metal are all you need. It is phenomenally difficult to bang oxygen and hydrogen together to make water. It happens in combustion engines, as tiny amounts of vapour, kind of outranked by all the other stuff coming out of the exhaust pipe. So the water on this planet is pretty much the water that the pre-primordial atmosphere held, that finally rained down and created oceans, was lived in by early microbial life, dinosaurs, woolly mammoths, billions of humans... you'll make your tea, drink it, pee it out, and the cycle continues. Oceans, rainfall, tea, it's the same water molecules it has always been, since the formation of this planet.

Type-1 Diabetics can fall victim to “DIBS” or “Dead In Bed Syndrome”. Essentially they pass away in their sleep for no apparent medical reason. It generally happens to younger diabetics and rarely over 40 years old. It cant directly be related to low or high blood sugar and it something that just happens (although somewhat rare).

Till the 1980's something many doctors still believed kids under 1 year couldn't feel pain so surgeries were often done without anesthesia.
Women die more often in car crashes because those tests still use male bodies but only smaller and not female bodies with a different point of gravity.

It was the fact that it had not been specifically tested on pregnant women, and was prescribed for Nausea. It took some time to identify a link between its use and the symptoms even once they had become quite widespread. Clinical trials back in the 1950s were nothing like as rigorous as they are today, and Thalidomide was a prime reason for the change.

They're left both because it doesn't make sense to risk more lives bringing them down and as a reminder of what can happen. Like the tradition in the US of leaving memorials (crosses, flowers etc) at a safe place where people have di€d in traffic accidents. And the bodies aren't left to be climbed over. They're to the side. Sometimes not far and easily visible, but they're not adding bodies to climb over like it's an obstacle course.

The expedition companies make plenty of money to fund bisy removal. They should be made responsible to do so. It may take multiple missions to get the highest bodies but it can be done over time. There would also be fewer deaths if the expeditions were properly organized by properly trained leaders, and climbers were required to properly qualify. Every so often I catch the big spiders and put them far away outside and vacuum up the mess they make (the odd spiderweb can be cute, but when it looks like a haunted house, time to tidy up) but I'm not sure which side is winning. I mean, the little buggers have the entire attic to frolic around in, can't they leave my bit alone? And can't they learn to stop dropping themselves into my tea? On face-value, I want to agree just to spite humanity, but this literally isn't true in any sense. Humans have a more well-developed superego and frequently act on it in contradiction to what would be their own benefit. Animals act on instinct and survival on a purer level, and at the end of the day, greed and ruthlessness are instinctual emotions. The problem with humans isn't that they're greedier and more ruthless, it's that they should know better and have the intelligence and skill to act on their instincts more effectively.

Most of this is nonsense. Cockroaches very much do have a central nervous system. Cockroaches do not possess sweat glands, although they can secrete certain oils and pheremones through their exoskeletons. They don't die of starvation - the largest cockroach species can carry enough fat supplies to live for several months without food. They die of dehydration.

There are hundreds of species of cockroach, of which only 5 have the potential to infect houses. They range from beautiful green ones that smell of pear drops, ladybug mimics, burrowing species, beetle mimics, black-and-white harlequin marked ones and many more. Some lay egg cases, others retain them until giving birth to live young. Australian burrowing cockroaches mate long term and stay in their burrow with their young for up to a year.

Oh FFS stop perpetuating stereotypes. People with DID are far more likely to be the victim of a crime (s) than to commit them. This is in large part due to their previous trauma. (DID is the result of extreme childhood abu$e). Also many people with DID know about their alters. Some are even able to achieve co-consciousness and/or some of the alters end up integrating. To me what makes DID creepy is the fact that the original personality (before the abu$e) isn't always the main one. The one you interact with could have been created and taken over from the original. Or the original di€d and no longer exists. Or the fact that alters can "di€" and come back later.

You're overthinking. OP is pointing out the fear the person with DID feels, not your fear. Ask some schizophrenics how big they are on religion, and you'll get quite a few polite runaround responses. That's because it often takes an active effort to avoid falling into delusion, in this case the delusions of the stereotypical schizophrenic who thinks they're an agent of God. I suspect this is a common problem presented in different ways across quite a few mental illnesses. It's not because society perpetuates a negative stereotype, it's because -it actually happens to us-. Some tropes are, unfortunately, more accurate than we want them to be and require efforts to avoid becoming one. From the perspective of people with mental illness, this post is not only valid, but a bit refreshing. No one talks about it, because you don't want to be pigeonholed as that trope, but like the tropes DO sometimes manifest in actual cases, and the fear of it doing so is pretty relatable.
