When people think about bad habits, it’s often smoking and similar unhealthy behavior that comes to mind. But sometimes, something way less detrimental, yet far from praise-worthy, too, can get on people’s nerves.

Members of the ‘Ask Reddit’ community recently discussed bad habits that way too many people have. Their examples ranged from annoyances, such as lacking basic elevator etiquette, to more peculiar things, like nasal spray addiction, showing just how diverse bad habits can be. If you’re curious to learn more, scroll down to find more examples on the list below.

Bored Panda has reached out to the OP and he was kind enough to answer a few of our questions. You will find his thoughts in the text below.

30 Bad Habits That A Shocking Amount Of People Have Just absentmindedly being in the way. Like just standing in a place without awareness of their surroundings. I work in a grocery store and it’s enough to make me go mad. I understand you’re weighing your options but sir/maam, you are taking up the entire aisle doing it pls pick a side.

I hste when pedestrians do that on streets and bike lanes. Why could the bike lane be red? Why a signal color? Maybe the color gives a hint for the purpose of the mistaken pavement?

The OP shared that the reason he decided to pose this particular question was watching a video about car repairs—that’s when he learned that almost 75% of people don’t maintain their car.

“There may be no proof of that number but still, it blew my mind how many people neglected their vehicles; I learned the hard way to take care of my car,” he told Bored Panda. “It made me think about other bad habits that are surprisingly common.”

30 Bad Habits That A Shocking Amount Of People Have Getting offended when someone makes a mistake. You're not going to die if some random stranger on the net doesn't know the difference between their, there, and they're.

Also getting offended by someone's personal preferences. So what if some people prefer iPhone over android, DC over Marvel, or cream in their coffee. There's nothing wrong with that. It's not like they listen to Justin Beiber.

Whilst I agree with the comment, please remember poor use of grammar, punctuation, homophones, poor spelling, etc, can make it significantly harder for some people to understand what is being said. I'm dyslexic, and they're/their/there mistakes cause me to stumble when I'm reading, as does to/too/two. Mistakes can also make it harder for people who don't have English as their first (or second) language, and for people who use technology to have text read to them. .... What am I trying to say? Try your best to make your text understandable by as many people as possible, but don't worry about it too much. (And I am seriously hoping I haven't made any mistakes in spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.)

I teach dyslexic students. Often it is they who are getting their/they're/there etc wrong in the first place. As someone with the issue you will be aware that using proper grammar requires both decoding and encoding skills which are two of the biggest challenges for students with reading and writing issues. Additionally, the technical rules that make up grammar and syntax can be especially difficult for dyslexic students to commit to memory. One in ten people are dyslexic, many are profound and would not be able to produce a paragraph as well written as yours. I appreciate your point but if you struggle with reading it, there are many who will struggle with writing it and will make these mistakes. We need to accept that. We need to accept that ability varies massively and manage the best we can ourselves.

The iPhone thing is so true! I had a Motorola and was perfectly happy with it. Then after 3 years the screen cracked. I was just going to buy another android or samsung phone because I don't need anything fancy and I don't want to spend a lot of money on something I don't really need. Yet, my siblings kept pressuring me into getting an iPhone.

I personally take the approach to be offended if the other person actually intended to offend me. Otherwise I usually chalk it up to incompetence, ignorance or arrogance and work with that. Sometimes it’s a simple misunderstanding of the situation my me or them. Not worth getting upset over.

Being offended by something is a personal choice of the person that gets offended. You can choose to be offended or not. Even when someone is intentionally trying to rile you up, it's your choice how you react. Unfortunately, we live in an age when people are choosing to be offended by damn near everything. If it's words, ignore them or don't listen. If it's other people's personal life choices, it's none of your business. The being offended culture and cancel culture go hand-in-hand and have gone too far.

I struggle with this. Most of the time it’s “don’t correct blatant errors on social media” for fear of being labeled a ‘grammar nazi’. In what world did knowing the difference between there, their and they’re become synonymous with genocide? I use semicolons correctly; apparently, this means I’m a psychopath. ETA I mean I use semicolons in my OWN posts and have been accused of being a psychopath! I don’t go around telling others where THEY should have used them.

To be fair the people I know who struggle with this are dyslexic. One of them is my spouse and I have to correct his written work a lot. Dyslexia made it hard for him to learn grammar as his is quite profound. That isn't going to change no matter how many times he is corrected as he literally can't see the difference (I did try before learning more). One in ten people are thought to have a form of dyslexia so do bear in mind you are very likely correcting people with a learning disability and they can have poor self confidence already and it won't help. Many were treated like idiots at school when in fact they are often smart, they just don't have a brain wired the same way. No, you aren't a psychopath but what do you really hope to gain from correcting people for whom you know nothing about? If you believe you are teaching someone it is rather condescending and if it is personal irritation, that is really your problem and not theirs.

Car-related habits are not only why the OP started the thread, but also what he considers to be the worst of them all. “I think the worst habit that a lot of people have is bad driving. Not only is it frustrating but it is dangerous; yet it's so common. People don't seem to understand how deadly a car crash can be,” he pointed out in a recent interview.

As for the bad human tendencies that surprised him the most, the redditor said he was taken aback by people’s hygiene-related behavior. “I think the most shocking response was when someone stated that not washing hands was a bad habit and someone else agreeing and stating that they worked in a doctor's office and most of the doctors didn't wash their hands. Ick.”

Tailgating isn't a 'bad habit', it's highly dangerous. Top Tip: The pic doesn't show 'tailgaiting', it shows a traffic jam. In slow-moving traffic, it's perfectly fine to reduce the distance between yourself and the car in front. That said at speed/on the freeway it can be deadly.

Well it's not exactly an easy thing to fix. There are many socio-economic factors, plus many people try cigarettes but not everyone gets addicted the same way. I, for example, became much much much more dependent than an average smoker and it was a looooooooong and hard struggle to finally kick the habit. And the urge to smoke a cigarette comes back periodically - Less and less frequently, and it's less and less intensive, but I expect that random urges for a cigarette will oxcasionally pop up for the rest of my life.

My phone broke earlier this week and I had to go about half a day without it. Yes, it was a huge inconvenience as far as contacting people was concerned, but there was something really blissful about my walk, because I wasn't stopping to take pictures to show anyone anything, and no one was interrupting my thoughts so I had to be 100% just in my moment. It's nice to take a break, but with society now, still gotta have it around.

It's not OK to try and manipulate people, but everyone 'lies'. The only question is 'to what extent?'
