Tom Gauld is a cartoonist and illustrator from Scotland that has the talent to blend entertainment with intellectual stimulation. He creates humorous and sometimes philosophical comics about literature, art, science and more.

Tom's work is regularly published in prestigious publications such as The Guardian, The New Yorker and New Scientist and he has created a number of books, the most recent being "Revenge of the Librarians".

"I love telling stories and making people laugh, and comics are such an interesting way of doing that. I'm still always learning new ways to communicate through comics and getting inspired by the way other artists make their comics," the artist previously shared with Bored Panda.

Has nothing to do with humans being disgusting they just constantly clean themselves after they touch anything

Bored Panda once again reached out to Tom to delve deeper into his creative process and gain further insights into the world of comics. Given the abundance of talented comic artists, we were curious to know Tom's perspective on the significance of cartoons within our society. According to the artist, comics are a great way to communicate almost anything. "There are lots of things in life that are depressing, so with my work, I'm mainly just trying to cheer people up a bit. Hopefully entertaining them in a reasonably intelligent way so they go away a tiny bit happier than before."

That's the problem with science, it is a practice, and can be and has been proven to be utterly f*****g wrong in some instances. And yes today most scientific studies "prove" favorable results for whichever company is paying for the study. Which isn't f*****g science.

Being an artist does not guarantee a constant flow of ideas; there are moments when people encounter creative blocks. Tom is no exception. The artist shared that in moments like these, he tries to push through. "I try to keep making things even if I'm not sure if they're any good. Sometimes I feel something is really awful but then I look at it again the next day and realize it's not bad, or I realize what needs to be fixed. I also go for a walk to get a change of scene, and maybe work in a coffee shop for a while."

Talking about future projects or dreams, Tom shared that he'd like to try adapting someone else's work into a comic. "I think it would be an interesting challenge to see what I could add through images and cartooning. If I can find the right text, I'll try this sometime."

Honestly, being an adult isn't all that great 😕. Enjoy your childhood to the fullest. Before you know it you'll be an adult and wishing you could be a kid again. Adulthood is really hard and stressful. I'm not saying that childhood is always easy and stress free but being an adult extremely sucks sometimes 😕.

For aspiring artists who desire to start creating comics but find themselves uncertain about where or how to start, Tom offers some words of wisdom. "It's kind of obvious," the artist shared. "Just make a lot of work and try not to get discouraged when something doesn't work out quite right. And don't feel you need to write some big opus of a graphic novel to start with. I did a lot of very short comics when I was starting and I learned so much, even from the ones that were pretty bad."

Well, technical speaking, Pluto would actually be quite far enough to see like four and a half hours back in time. So, it depends on how far do you need to check. Current distance of Pluto to Earth according to Google is 5.0575 billion km and that is approximately 4 hours and 41 minutes if you take light speed as 299,997 km/sec.

Audiobooks are absolutely real books. They activate the same parts of the brain as physical books. You don't have to be illiterate or have a disability to enjoy them. I have physical books at home and audiobooks in the car.

Personal opinion: audiobooks are for those who are one of 3 things: illiterate/dyslexic/blind (incapable of reading the printed word); too busy to take any time to actually sit still long enough to read a physical book (ADHD and certain varieties of autism also fall in this category); (this last one is extremely situational) the one listening to them is extremely young and the one originally reading it to them died in the middle of the book. (That last one is actually a situation that arose with a friend of mine in grade school when their grandmother passed. The whole "audiobook" scene was extremely limited back then, but the grandmother had recorded herself reading nearly her entire library of children's books so that her grandkids and great-grandkids could still have Grandma "read to them" after she was no longer living.)

I’ve not listened to an audio book, but all respect to those who do, whatever the reason. I enjoy reading personally because sometimes I just fall in love with a sentence and I like to read that sentence a few times before I move on. Plus I think I’m a little too slow-witted to absorb everything if I just listen.

I just read a book on my Kindle (I won't say the author's name, I just won't get anymore of his books). The storyline was fascinating, but the writing was sh*t. All kinds of grammatical errors & he misspelled one of the main character's name multiple times (he starts of with Sylvia & then it was Silvia). One of the things I like about Kindle is you can report content errors - and I DO.

A tablet and e-books from the library. Problem solved. You may now tell me about how you “just love the feel of a real book in your hand.”
