yes, but possibly not in the usa... red state governors are already ordering the dismantling of solar panels, & republicoño legislators are trying to even ban private solar panels. fortunatley this madness is only in a few states. at least for now. (these states suffered massive power outages after a recent hurricane messed up the grid statewide.)

target started a pilot program in los angeles a few yrs ago doing the same thing... the did it to two of their locations in the los angeles area, & provided electricity for their stores & extra power to go to the grid... given what president musk & king trump are doing i suspect that target will not only abandon this pillot program but also go so far as to dismantle the ones it already has. (less than a month into the new regime target has already caved on diversity equality enclusiveness & gone so far as to actually canceled all sorts of distribution deals & contracts with minority owned businesses)

Most people want to live in a comfortable environment; one that is functional, safe, and, preferably, not an eyesore. That’s why we spend large chunks of our paychecks on comfy furniture, different appliances, and sometimes all sorts of knicknacks that have the power to turn a house into a home.

Bearing in mind that people want their homes to be comfortable, it’s no surprise that they might want their cities to be, too. And while that means different things to different people, this list shows that there are plenty of innovative ways to make cities more convenient for their residents (and visitors alike).

Making cities a nice place for people to live is a responsibility that usually falls into the hands of urban design experts. On a daily basis, they are presented with the unique challenge of creating spaces that fit the needs of a certain community, both visually and functionally.

According to Washington State’s Municipal Research and Services Center (MRSC), urban design addresses the functional and aesthetic qualities of the physical environment by combining the practices of architecture, planning, and landscape architecture; and mastering all three is not an easy task to conquer.

Though, clearly, some urban design experts and other people responsible for the execution of creative and innovative solutions in cities have conquered their tasks with flying colors, as we can see here.

These swings are great. They are fairly common in Australia, the first ones I saw were before my older brother died, so early 2000s at least. Still could be in more playgrounds, but usually they are in ones sponsored by organisations such as APEX or Lion's Club. The best quality ones are probably Liberty swings.

For people in cities to be happy, it might not be enough to have a comfortable home or good transportation infrastructure. Green spaces are arguably equally—if not more—important. Though, according to the UN, provision and access to open public spaces remains low across regions, negatively impacting the quality of urban life.

“Public spaces enhance inclusion, social cohesion and the productivity of cities. However, 2020 data from 1,072 cities reveal that more than three-quarters have less than 20 per cent of their area dedicated to open public spaces and streets,” notes the UN’s Statistics Division.

It’s no secret that our environment can significantly influence our well-being, hence the importance of well-thought-out urban areas featuring public spaces and other crucial elements.

A study delving deeper into urban design as a key to healthy environments for all suggests that urban design and transport “have the potential to provide large, long-lasting, and immediate benefits for health, and hence are key to healthy and sustainable urban environments for all.

“If designed with this perspective in mind, urban design and transport policies (along with other interventions) can provide multiple benefits, including: reducing the upward trajectory of greenhouse gas emissions, protecting the environment, fostering equity and intergenerational solidarity, and improving our resilience to future potential pandemics,” the study read in part.

I live by the coast and I don’t dislike seagulls but they are dangerous around food, some of them are large and very aggressive, they often have virtually no fear too, which is a dangerous combination. Something better does need to be done about their behaviours, or at least people being banned from feeding them. When you are eating outside they swoop at you and sometimes hit your head, if they do wait until you’ve stood up from a table they destroy everything on it breaking glasses and plates. It’s quite scary. I once saw a pair of seagulls fighting in the sky aggressively, I walked on a bit and there was a freshly dismembered wing lying on the pathway. I wouldn’t want to be an owner of a small dog, that’s for sure! (Uk)

That's what happens when people move into their habitats or when their natural food sources are no longer available. Why hunt for fish when easier food is readily available all over? It's a bit spoiled to say that they shouldn't be allowed to exist near humans when it's humans who have caused this behaviour in the first place. And I say this as someone living in a coastal city with seagulls as well.

This is how the seats on the street cars in New Orleans work too! When they get to the 'end of the line,' they don't turn the street car around, they just flip the seats, the the conductor moves to the opposite end of each train, where it has identical driving gears at both ends. It is quite neat!

Another study, focused on what people want in a so-called smart city (a city featuring ICT [information and communication technology]-based solutions to tackle urban challenges), found that “far from the image of a highly technological city, the stakeholders envision a city dedicated to improving the quality of life and environmental sustainability.

“Furthermore, to achieve this smart city, the projects need to be based on full transparency and the promotion of social inclusion. In contrast to the dominant trend towards the privatization of urban space, this study finds that the stakeholders prefer public-based smart city projects such as ICT-based public transport services.”

As I'm not trained to such a high level (or any level) I'm not going to worry about whether a casualty is in that 13% or not. I'm going to keep them viable until the professionals get there (and if it turns out they weren't viable then at least the family know everything possible was done to help them). I know of a gentleman who had CPR in his 70s and went on to live another twenty years.

I've already missed buses because I'm so engrossed in a book I don't notice it coming and don't stick my hand out. They think I'm waiting for a different number bus and see me swearing to myself as they drive past. I'm sure I could do the same thing in Norway.

In some countries I've visited, crossing emit a clicking sound. It is slow when the lights are on go for the cars, and then speeds up when the lights are on red to stop the traffic. Having the sound all the time alerts blind people to there being a crossing nearby. In the UK, they have to know where the crossing is, and then they usually beep to say you can cross.

As a legally blind disabled American, this should be in EVERY town, city, suburb, every street that has a light. BTW, a fun fact: Jaywalking may be legal where you live, every state/country has their own rules, but here in America?-- it is completely legal for us to cross anywhere on the street, no matter what. Mistakes happen. The danger is real. Sometimes we make that mistake-- it's harder to hear a lot of these electric vehicles. No matter where, I always cross at a light, for common sense and safety, but I AM old now, and I do make those mistakes sometimes. Thankfully, I've never been hurt badly

There are raised surfaces on the pavement (US: sidewalk) - patterns of bumps and ridges. We have them on train platforms, too, so blind and partially sighted people know where the doors will open.

That´s called "natural eating behaviour" for ferals. And public food dispesers may be a solution to hinder hungry cats from killing birds. By the way, when was the last time you had chicken? Did you kill it yourself, or did you leave it to the butcher?

It took me a bit to figure out what you meant. I have never had a pair of rain boots. I actually only own hightop sneakers for work and some very low heels for dressing up. Having a separate pair of shoes for rain, while very smart, seems a bit luxurious to me because our rains are seldom this severe. Other climates may make my luxury into their necessity, however.

I'm sure this cute little bridge is helping somewhat but dude's kicks are soaked, all the way through to his feet. Yes, the water seems to be deeper the closer you get to the sidewalk but the road appears to have at least 2-3 inches/ ~5-7cm deep, to the left of the orange cone and above the 'D' so unless you're wearing the proper footwear, you're going to have a rough day.

Cute, but, anyone else notice that the water is still to high for sneakers on the street side? This pedestrian's shoes are already soaked. Nice try.

My town has this bypass on city lights, so the lights all turn to red except for the emergency vehicle, and a rotating yellow caution light flashes on the corner light pole. Saves lives as the siren sound might not be heard from a distance, also on calls (at night, during certain police calls) that don't use a siren just the emergency lights

Our huge fire engines have these incredibly loud gruff sounding horns. When they drive by I can feel the sound in my chest the same way I can feel a helicopter fluttering in my chest. The other fire trucks have the high sirens that pierce the night. The big engine trucks can control all of the traffic lights as they pass by.

Paramedic here...sirens don't matter. Too often, people do not pay attention, the music is too loud, or there are other reasons. This is a great idea to assist with safety in intersections.

As the ecological rules for paint in some cities are terribly strict, the paint disappears in months. (one wonders if the ecological effects of accidents should not prevail, if human effects are not taken into account). Also, paints gets "invisible" when it rains. So these coloured (natural or industrial) stones have huge benefits.

No, they are marble. They are not slippery because they are rough cut, and the grooves help. They are common in Italian city centers where pavèe is used.

They will clog up the sewer / rainwater runoff infrastructure and cause major flooding in areas not typically prone to flooding. Plus, if they cover too much of the street, they become slippery like snow/ice when walking/driving/stopping and become a safety concern.

Other places would put up signs to forbid you from sitting there, because "loitering" and threaten to have you fined. Hint, these places also have rules against "jaywalking". What they don't have is benches, trashcans and pedestrian crossings.

It is a single traffic light, originally designed as an art project. It pops up in different places to remind people how important it is to pay attention while participating in traffic. The contrast between first hearing upbeat music and then realising it's the playlist of 13 year old Tommy-Boy who died in a traffic accident is to shock people and cause dialog.

Dairy is very important to some nations When I was a small child, we used to buy glass bottles, half-gallon, from a repurposed gas station that had 2 drive-in windows to sell milk. You could get whole (full-fat), skim (non-fat), and chocolate.

These are brilliant in the cold danish winter. And before you ask, the dogs are not in there for ages, most city dwelling danes tend to do a quick daily shop instead of a weekly big shop , so they are just popping in to get a few essentials during their dog walk, the dogs might just have been to the park and then get to snooze for ten minutes before going home.

It's a red-neck area supermarket that got nationally famous when ABC News instructed embittered employees to violate health codes so that ABC News could truthfully report that health codes were violated. Believe it or not, Food Lion couldn't sue them for slander because technically, health codes were violated by Food Lion employees, even though 40 hours of footage was found of Food Lion employees refusing to violate health codes.

It's part of the Jacksonville Medical Auxiliary. Basically, a group of volunteers who help out at various events. Most have some level of medical training, but they don't just operate the small ambulance. They also have a number of trained rescue/recovery divers on staff, who help out during search and rescue operations, or recovery operations. This ambulance is primarily used during street festivals. Jacksonville Florida, for those curious.
