30 Times Famous People Decided To Teach Fans A Lesson About Human Decency
Parasocial relationships refer to one-sided relationships in which a person develops a strong connection with someone they don't know, most often celebrities or media personalities.
These relationships exist only in the mind of the individual, who experiences a bond despite the lack of reciprocity, and are typically harmless. However, they might also consume people and make them violate others' privacy.
To highlight the importance of boundaries, we collected a set of examples showing what happens when you cross them — instead of impressing your idol, you're most likely going to make them uncomfortable, be rejected, or even face a restraining order.

Sophia Bush Posted A Statement On Her Instagram Story Asking To "Please Get Consent Before Touching People" And "Treat People Like People, Even If You 'Know' Them From Their Jobs"
Actress Sophia Bush made a clear plea to her fans: respect personal boundaries! After a run-in at a DNC event, she reminded everyone to get consent before touching others and treat celebrities like, well, people - not just their on-screen personas.
Good for her and attention rest of the world, they’re literally just people. Getting that worked up about another human is intensely strange. There are a lot of the population that really don’t care that their favorite movie star is ten feet away. Maybe that’s why the people on the other end of the spectrum are so concerning, because it’s unusual to get that crazy about meeting or seeing another human being. It’s not like an endangered species or something you don’t get to see in everyday life.
There was a man i wanted badly to meet at the top of my bucket list, and when I finally met him, I just cried. I’d cried three times as I’d gotten close to him and thought it was out of my system ,but nope! I cried. He didn’t speak English, and like a dope, I apologized a lot, likely confusing him, and when he shook my hand, the tears came even harder. I managed to hand him a letter I’d written in Ukrainian with help from my dad; good thing I’d written it, as it said what I’d hoped to be able to say but couldn’t. It never in a million YEARS occurred to me to touch him. Reading this just now made me extremely anxious. I’m grateful I’m not a public figure of any sort!
Load More Replies...I once met one of my favourite authors, David Gemmell. He was signing at a bookstore in Glasgow and I happened to walk in. There was a long queue. I just stood around watching, and the fanbois were being all flappy and squeaky and all the rest. The writer looked exhausted, so at the end when the queue had abated and they were beginning to pack up, I walked up and said, 'Hi, I'm really sorry to bother you, but you look seriously stressed out. You wanna go next door for a beer?' David (and his agent) ended up taking me to a restaurant where we had dinner and they insisted on paying for all of it - we had a brilliant time, talking about so many things, and he mentioned how badly he wished he didn't have to do signings, because, well, people. I said "I know, it's hard work being famous", and we had a good laugh. That was a magical evening.
I grew up in a NY metro area town where celebrities were not uncommon. I was taught its coolest to just let them be, they’re just people.
When I met my favourite celebrity, I did ask her if I could put my arm around her for a photograph- she said 'not before we have a big hug though!' I love her!
Who? Nichelle Nichols once hugged me! I would never initiate contact with a celeb without their permission.
Load More Replies...She is absolutely right! Just bc they seem familiar to fans because if their work , fans are strangers to them. I'd be freaked out if a stranger came up to me and began touching me and putting a camera in my face. There are actors whom I am a fan of their work. I would never in a million years go up to a famous person and invade their personal space. Its just weird.
Anthony Mackie And Theo James On Fan Behavior Towards Actors
Anthony Mackie shared his perspective on fan behavior during The Hollywood Reporter's Roundtable Talks. He stated that people often tell him, "This is what you signed up for," when dealing with overzealous fans, but he disagrees. "That's like telling a girl that because she put on a cute dress and went to a bar, she signed up for me to harass her all night," he said. Mackie emphasized the importance of respecting boundaries, saying, "In this day and age, we've learned that we have to respect everyone's 'no.'"
In A Resurfaced Video Clip Of Anne Hathaway Leaving A Valentino Fashion Show In 2022, She Told A Group Of Fans, "I Cannot Take Photos With Everyone As There's Too Many Of You, But I Will Stand Here And Wave If You Would Like To Take A Photo"
Actress Anne Hathaway politely set boundaries with a group of fans outside a 2022 Valentino fashion show, explaining that she couldn't take photos or sign autographs for everyone due to the large crowd. Instead, she offered to wave for photos, allowing fans to capture a moment without compromising her own needs. Hathaway thanked the fans for their understanding.
That is fair. Maybe even have an "hour for selfies" at some con. I absolutely understand that celebrities want time without other people, on the other hand, they are well known and a lot of people want to meet them (for some reason).
In 2017, Emma Watson Told Vanity Fair That She Started Declining Fans' Requests For Selfies Out In Public
Actress Emma Watson has revealed that she no longer takes selfies with fans in public due to safety concerns. "If someone takes a photograph of me and posts it, within two seconds they've created a marker of exactly where I am within 10 meters," she explained in a 2017 interview with Vanity Fair. Watson will often offer to answer fans' questions instead.
In Variety's Actors On Actors Conversation With Adam Sandler, Jennifer Lawrence Said, "Once I Enter A Public Space, I Become Incredibly Rude. I Become A Huge A*****e. That's My Only Way Of Defending Myself."
Jennifer Lawrence admits she becomes "a huge a*****e" in public as a defense mechanism against unwanted attention, particularly selfie requests. In a recent Actors on Actors interview for Variety, Lawrence described how she proactively rejects fans approaching her table, asserting her need to protect her personal space.
You're getting requests for selfies with strangers on the regular, yeah?

In 2018, Jennifer Garner Confronted Photographers And Asked For “Space” As She Went To Help Her Former Husband, Ben Affleck, Check Back Into Rehab
In 2018, Jennifer Garner requested space from photographers as she helped her then-estranged husband, Ben Affleck, check back into rehab, reported The Metro. As she left his Pacific Palisades home, she politely asked the paparazzi to give them some distance, saying, "Can I ask you guys a favour? Just out of respect, can you give some space? Would you please? Just right now, just give us a minute." She briefly confirmed that Ben was okay before returning to the home and driving off with him.
God, I really like this woman. She's gorgeous, talented and funny, and even after what is widely reported to be an acrimonious breakup, she still has compassion for her ex-husband. Good for her.
In A Now-Deleted Tweet Lili Reinhart Wrote, "To The Two Girls Who Are Repeatedly Photographing Me As I'm Eating My Lunch... I See You. You Aren't Slick… That's F***ing Rude?"
Tired of being photographed mid-bite, Lili Reinhart addressed the paparazzi directly in a tweet, reminding everyone that she's a person, not just "Betty Cooper," and politely stated they are not entitled to her.
Who? I must be outside the demograhic. I've never heard her name before.
I thought that was Brittney Murphy, but she's no longer with us

There's a huge difference b/t fans and paparazzi though. The ones shooting to sell pics to ET and TMZ are waaayyyy more intrusive.
They wouldn't normally photograph you or me when we're eating dinner, so why should they photograph her?

Moments before her Bonnaroo performance, Björk posted a sign requesting that attendees refrain from taking photographs or recording video. The sign stated that doing so is distracting to her and further encouraged audience members to "enjoy being part of the performance and not preoccupied with recording it."
Not that many listened but I'm glad she said it. I have had people show me videos of shows they went to and they have never, not once, been worth watching. Not that the music was bad but the energy is missing, the field of vision is distorted and the sound is terrible.
Exactly. I'll take photos (and I've managed some d**n good ones), but I do catch myself being preoccupied with the photos and not immersing myself enough in the music.

Justin Bieber Wants His Privacy Respected. The Star Took To Instagram Stories To Blast Individuals Who Had Been Invasively Waiting Outside His Home For Him To Arrive
Justin Bieber just wants to chill at home without the paparazzi stakeout! He took to Instagram to call out those who wait outside his apartment to gawk and snap photos, reminding them that his residence is not a tourist attraction but a private home.
I recently saw a video where some fangirl stand in front of his home and as he arrived, she repeatedly asked him for a hug. Bieber handled it well, he politely asked her to stop standing in front of his house , said that he want to relax at home without people watching him. Fan nodded, said yeah, sure, I understand. Then asked him for a hug again and did not leave.
I've never even considered the creepy and gross, "Can I have a hug?" from a celeb. I've had plenty of celebs offer a hug, but not because I asked. Perhaps because I'm trying to respect their personhood and privacy?

After alleged social media drama with Hailey Bieber and Kylie Jenner, Selena Gomez posted on her Instagram Story, "Hailey Bieber reached out to me and let me know that she has been receiving death threats and such hateful negativity." She then asked fans to "stop" the "hate."
While I commend Selena for making this request, there is no denying that Hailey and Kylie were being intentionally nasty about one of Selena’s posts. The minute it happened again, if I were Selena I would’ve said ok all bets are off, meet people with their own energy and if people are going to be awful, that is their invitation for you to be awful in return.
Okay. I like Selena Gomez. She's good on that murder show. But I can't imagine being so invested in a celebrity that I'd insert myself into their beef with somebody else.

Millie Bobby Brown Claps Back At Critics Over Comments About Her Appearance "I've Had Enough"
"I refuse to apologize for growing up!" The Stranger Things star took to Instagram and called out "bullying" journalism dissecting her face and body, urging for a shift from criticism to support for young women. Brown's powerful statement highlights the intense scrutiny young stars face in the public eye.
Sorry, I don't pay much attention to celebrity news, what were people complaining about? She looks fine.
She was in "stranger things", a supernatural show about children overcoming nightmarish events. Her character went through the most and overcame the most. People are attached to that character and want to imagine her as a child forever.

I haven't watched any TV in a few years so maybe I missed the gradual change in her appearance, but I would never have guessed this picture was her if not for the title.
Well there is a pretty big difference in physical appearance between someone who is 11 years old and that person when they are 22.

Mitski Asks Fans To Put Their Phones Away During Her Upcoming Shows
In a Twitter thread from February 2022, she explained, " They’re part of our reality, I have mine on me all the time, and I’m not against taking photos at shows (Though please no flash lol)." However, Mitski also expressed that watching people film entire songs or sets makes her feel "as though we are not here together." She hopes to create a more shared experience, asking fans to be present and share the moment with her, rather than viewing it as content to be captured.
I understand the desire for a more shared, present experience during a performance, but telling people how to experience something feels uncomfortable. You can't dictate how someone feels "in the moment"—everyone connects differently. If the concern is about unauthorized sharing or people seeing the performance without paying, that's a fair and tangible issue. But framing it as a matter of emotional presence crosses into something more personal, and it risks alienating the very people who are showing up and engaging in their own way.
Then you have the Grateful Dead who allowed people to audio tape their shows. There were special 'tapers tickets' and a whole section at the back of the venues for them to set up their decks and dual microphones. I can only assume that they didn't care about people video recording and taking pics either, the past few years performing as The Dead.

I make it a point not to even talk to celebrities when they're just being normal people. When they're at an event which is part of their job (including premieres or coming off stage), then I think they should engage with their fans (and I give Tom Cruise a lot of credit for the way he does it), but not if they're at a restaurant, travelling or shopping, or just walking the dog. That said, if they put themselves out on social media and show off how they look, they're entitled to be criticised (eg the body positive hypocrites).
