Remember the good old childhood days when all you worried about was which cartoon shows to watch that day? The long and lazy summer holidays swept by as you slumped in front of the TV and consumed as many cartoons as possible, and now, even in your busy work life, do you still make time to enjoy some adult cartoon shows?

For the ones who love to indulge in all things animated and cartoon-related, you have come to the right place! We have here a charming collection of the best cartoons of all time. But first, let’s look at the history of our beloved shows.

History of Old Cartoon Shows

More than a hundred years ago, in 1908, cinema-goers were blessed with something they'd never seen before - an animated movie. Yup, that's how long ago the first-ever cartoon show was made! It was called Fantasmagorie and was created by French cartoonist Émile Cohl.

This, my friends, spurred a revolution in the cinema arts, allowing creators to concoct such views, stories, and adventures that would otherwise be impossible in the real world. Plenty of things have happened since then in the world of animation, and plenty of cartoon series marked milestones in its development.

From 90s cartoon shows or the funniest cartoon network shows, when there are so many cartoons to choose from, one might wish to have a guide of some sort to separate the grain from the chaff, so to speak. And that's our cue as we've prepared a list of the best cartoons of all time for your judgment!

Looney Tunes

Poster for Looney Tunes featuring character Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester

1930 - 1969

Looney Tunes, an animated comedy short film series, marked the Golden Age of American animation. Looney Tunes, together with its accompanying series Merrie Melodies, introduced to us such iconic characters as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Wile E. Coyote, Marvin The Martian, and plenty, plenty more! Each of these characters had their own skits assigned to them, but it was Bugs Bunny that eventually stole the show, becoming the leading rabbit of the universe. And, if you're into classic animation, Looney Tunes is basically a manual to the genre!

Same here. Classic cartoons, such as Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry were such a brilliant way to teach people to love classical music.

I grew up on watching Looney Tunes with my father on Nickelodeon, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, Kids WB, and ABC. This is my all time favorite series, as most of the shorts are timeless. My only problem with watching it on Nickelodeon was that it usually showed way too many old, colorized Porky shorts and Speedy and Daffy shorts--Speedy and Daffy shorts were infamously terrible for the most part.

    Tom And Jerry

    Poster for Tom and Jerry

    1940 - 1958 | 114 episodes

Tom & Jerry is by far the most well-known animated series franchise consisting of 114 short films in its original run. Of course, you are right, there are plenty more of these comedic skits, but we're only talking about the episodes created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera since the duo was the first to bring Tom and Jerry to life. It's the story as old as the Earth itself depicted here - the constant chase between a cat and a mouse. However, in this series, the cat never wins, and the teeny tiny mouse proves to be way smarter than the predator! The fun here never ends, and their adventures get more and more elaborate with each skit. A true classic in the world of animation!

Tom and Jerry was basically just a cartoon trying to show how many different ways a cat and mouse could constantly beat the s**t out of one another and I loved it for that.

    1969 - 1978 | 3 seasons | 41 episodes

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! is an animated comedy series created by the legendary animation studio Hanna-Barbera. The series revolves around a team of four teenagers - Fred, Daphne, Shaggy, and Velma - and their dog Scooby-Doo, as they travel around in their van, The Mystery Machine, and solve various mysteries. Each of the characters is loveable and memorable, especially the titular Scooby! Their adventures are grand, the jokes are hilarious, and there's not a thing to criticize this series for!

There was one thing to criticize: the invention of Scrappy-Doo. Even as a kid, I did not care for the spin off series where it was solely Scooby, Shaggy and Scrappy just getting into goofy antics, regardless of whether monsters were actually involved or not. Ones where Scrappy was with the rest of the gang or Daphne was with them were fine though.

You should try watching one of the direct to video movies "Scooby Doo on Zombie Island" or "Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost." While I've never seen either film through entirely, both throw in a twist where the monsters are actually real and there's some genuinely spooky stuff in them.

I've been watching it on Disney+. I hear people crapping on the later seasons. I get the hatred. I still find it's relevant and entertaining. Sure it's not like the older seasons, and perhaps it's because it brings a nostalgic effect. But if you give the newer seasons a try it really isn't so bad. I've found them hilarious. The show is really trying to keep evolving with the times and I think they're doing a great job.

The Bugs Bunny Show, an animated anthology series, is proudly one of the longest-running American cartoons, having its first appearance in 1948 and ending its career in 2000. That's 52 years of runtime! Since its inception, The Bugs Bunny Show was produced in half-an-hour episodes, segmented into three shorter cartoons following the shenanigans of Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, Sylvester, and Road Runner, just to name a few of their Looney Tunes gang. The Bugs Bunny Show was a real Saturday morning staple and a wildly popular series that many of us watched in our early years. And maybe still do.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is an animated action-adventure fantasy series that ran on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. Avatar's world is inspired by Asian cultures, and in this world, certain people have telekinetic powers allowing them to control one of four classical elements - water, fire, earth, and air. Then there's the Avatar - the chosen one who can control all of the four and whose mission is to keep a peaceful balance among the nations. This Avatar is Aang, and together with his friends, they set out on extraordinary adventures to restore said balance. The series is ingenious with the excitement it creates, the nice moral messages it gives, and, of course, the most loveable characters in the most unexpected situations. Some critics even named Avatar one of the best animated series ever, and we couldn't agree more!

Tom And Jerry's exploits could be added to a list of basically any list mentioning TV shows, as the duo, in various incarnations, has been gracing our screens from the ‘50s right up to this day. The Tom And Jerry Comedy Show, though, ran for half an hour and included two segments of our favorite pair's antics and also a Droopy cartoon right in the middle. Unfortunately, this Tom And Jerry embodiment lived only for a couple of months in the ‘70s, but the episodes were later added to syndicated Tom And Jerry packages.

Created by the legendary animator and marine science educator Stephen Hillenburg, this series is full of imagination and the most unbelievable adventures experienced by the weirdest characters. Never really liked it, still is to this day, mainly because i find Spongebob's attitude and antics are annoying, it would be nice for Nickelodeon to retire Spongebob for good and give Squidward a spin-off show of his own like they did with his buddy Patrick, since he's never got alot of screen time, and whenever he does got screen time its either due to Spongebob pranked him, he got annoyed by spongebob's often annoying antics or being a cameo, in most of the episodes, Squidward only got mostly cameos

But, though such a prehistory of Futurama might lead you to imagine the same Simpsons just in space, boy, are you wrong. From gut-wrenching events (don't tell me I didn't warn you about The Dog) to subtle and not-so-subtle adult humor, this show is not just another animated series but an excellent sitcom undoubtedly worthy of being on this list. And if seven seasons of Futurama aren't enough to quench your thirst, you can always watch one of the series-based movies, play a video game, or collect the official merchandise.

    1996 | 4 seasons | 78 episodes

Dexter's Laboratory follows a boy genius Dexter, who, unbeknownst to his parents, runs a high-tech laboratory in his room. Here Dexter invents various useful and useless devices and materials with his older sister Dee-Dee constantly trying to sabotage his plans. There's also a rival boy genius and Dexter's superhero pet monkey. And you know the rest - time for misadventures! Dexter's Laboratory was probably one of the earliest Cartoon Network series known to attract not only kids but younger adults too and proved again that animated series should be given the credit that they deserve.

The only reason i disliked it, was due DeeDee, dexter's big sister, i find her acting more like a 7 year old, instead of a teenager, assuming she is a teenager, like she acts like that, literally in every episodes

    2001 - 2017 | 10 seasons | 172 episodes

Meet Timmy Turner, the protagonist of The Fairly OddParents animated series created by Butch Hartman. Timmy is an ordinary boy, living in a not-so-ordinary environment - he's neglected by his parents and terrorized by his babysitter. One fine day, though, our Timmy is granted two fairy godparents, who fulfill his every wish to improve his miserable life! Of course, those wishes are very likely to backfire on him, but that's the root of all the adventures Timmy embarks on daily. The series is creative, the premise is original, and the animation is done expertly - what's there not to like?

    South Park

    Poster for South Park

    1997 - | 25 seasons | 317 episodes and counting

An animated series that's old enough to gamble, buy beer, and smoke cigarettes, South Park has been running since 1997, gracing our screens with its dark and surreal humor, satire, and loads of profanity for 24 years. While social satire wasn't one of the central narratives of the series when it first aired, it developed its voice over the years. Now, most of the episodes revolve around pressing social issues or important events, as seen by the four wiser-than-your-average-4th-grader boys. Many famous people and popular stars have agreed to appear on this offbeat show - starting with Elton John, Jennifer Aniston and ending with Ozzy Osborne; the series had loads of well-known guests. However, some of them appeared very much incognito, for instance, George Clooney, who provided the barks of Stan's dog. Stars or no stars, though, the animated series is truly iconic and impactful, an inseparable part of popular culture.

We're always up for mysterious supernatural adventures paired with offbeat humor, entertaining characters, and unexpected events. Gravity Falls, an animated Disney Channel series, gives all that and a bit more. Following twins Dipper and Mabel Pines, this cartoon shows us their summer vacation adventures in Gravity Falls, Oregon, where they're unraveling the small town's mysteries. Not only does this show resonate with kids, teenagers, and young adults, but it has also gained a cult-like following from the fans. In fact, this show was so good; it is said to be an inspiration for many newer animated series.

Underrated, even given it's devoted fanbase. I consider it the greatest TV series of all time, animated or otherwise, and (low-key) the most ingenious realization of long-term story arcs and an expanded universe ever executed. Disney+'s original productions jnit, what are you waiting for? Please bring Greg Weisman on to helm (a proper) season three and many thereafter -- he's had BIG plans left on hold since 1995!

The '90s Hanna-Barbera Addams Family animated series better was witty, satiric, and versatile when compared to the '70s Hanna-Barbera Addams Family animated series, which was formulaic story-wise and very hack jokes-wise — i.e., standard H-B assembly line output for the era.

X-Men can certainly defeats most members of the DC's JLA without much issues, just by og members of the team. Their only worries are Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and MM (Martian Manhunter, he has telepathy, but not on Emma, Jean or Xavier's calibre) but all four of them, MM included are weak to Jean, Emma, Xavier, who are coincidently a telepath. Many of the members in JLA are weak to mental attacks

I only ever liked grumpy bear because he was the only one I could relate to. Not because he was grumpy but because he was the only realistic one who wasn't always smiling, happy, and full of energy. I was not an energetic or overly happy kid so I found the other bears annoying. I did like it when grumpy bear was happy from time to time tho. Just cuz he's grumpy bear doesn't mean he's always grumpy. I actually have a bear of him

Am i LITERALLY the only one to prefered the sequels (Ben 10: Ultimate Alien and Alien Force?) over the OG series? I even find Ben and Gwen's attitude as a kid really hard to watch. Also Ben's alien watch was even more powerful in the sequels i've mentioned, and of course it still has the occassional misshaps when he uses it, but much less frequently than it did in the OG series, plus Ben matured alot and more relatable in the sequels, it follows an older Ben in an even more adventures, and i find the squel better than the OG series

Not a family musical like the movie, but more to my taste, a fantasy-adventure series with exceptional world-building (on nearly a per-episode basis!), villains (Mozenrath, anyone? Or Jason Alexander's comic acting chops making any Abis Mal outing gold, even the potboilers?), and even a myth-arc/some series lore (the prophet Fasir and his connections to both Mirage and Fatoom.) ________ Back on the comedic end, Gilbert Gottfried often stole the show as Iago. Gottfried actually really understood the series and the balance between high adventure and humor. Some of the writers particularly had a handle on the dynamic between Iago Abu (and before I overlook Frank Welker, his chirping and chattering as Abu sold their interaction as much as Gottfried's delivery), not just as the "regular" comedic relief, but in episodes centered around them unwittingly, reluctantly cooperating: e.g. "To Cure a Thief", one of the series' most cynical, and "As the Netherworld Turns", one of its darkest and probably most shocking.
