BF Embarrasses GF For Her Quirk In Front Of His Friends, Regrets It When She Decides To Dump Him

Interview With Expert

People like to give inanimate objects names. I named my guitar Zac when I was 14, for example. Others even talk to their beloved things and treat them like a human, and there’s hardly anything wrong with that, right? Well, to some, it might seem just like a harmless quirk. But others think these people are weird and their behavior is embarrassing.

Like this boyfriend, who called out his girlfriend for treating her car, Angie, like a person, saying that she’s being “weird” and “embarrassing.” Perhaps he has been reading too much Stephen King recently? Either way, when she went radio silent, he started wondering if he maybe acted like a jerk.

Bored Panda got in touch with an expert who studies the human mind, Adam Waytz, Ph.D. He is a professor and psychologist at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, and he kindly agreed to tell us more about why people like to attribute human qualities to objects, and how that can affect relationships.

Some people have a silly quirk of treating inanimate objects like people

Anthropomorphizing is quite a natural behavior

People give names and talk to their possessions or animals quite often. The scientific term for this is anthropomorphism – giving human-like qualities to a non-human entity. Many people do this in childhood: they talk to their toys and pets, give them names, and generally treat them like a person.

The world’s leading expert on anthropomorphism, Nicholas Epley, claims that while some people may put down those who talk to their possessions, this feature is exceptional to humans and is a testament to our intelligence.

“Historically, anthropomorphizing has been treated as a sign of childishness or stupidity, but it’s actually a natural byproduct of the tendency that makes humans uniquely smart on this planet,” the professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago said.

Adam Waytz, a researcher on anthropomorphism, tells Bored Panda there are three main reasons why people do it.

  • When people are trying to make sense of the world,
  • when people are seeking social connection,
  • or when people observe a nonhuman thing that looks humanlike, they are more likely to anthropomorphize.

Essentially, it’s because the non-human entity either has a human-like face, we want to be friends with it, or we just can’t explain its behavior. We’re especially prone to anthropomorphize an object if it has eyes.

“Fake eyes are a trick we fall for almost every time—one that can dupe us into seeing a mind where no mind exists,” Epley wrote. “As a member of one of the planet’s most social species, you are hypersensitive to eyes because they offer a window into another person’s mind.”

The independent research consultancy Human Futures Studio found similar things. One of their researchers, Shane Saunderson, describes how they asked 125 adults about how and why they give their possessions names. They identified two reasons: they either feel emotionally close to the object, or are looking for ways to describe the object’s inherent characteristics.

Treating your car like a person can be a double-edged sword: it has its benefits and downsides

We indeed tend to turn to our pets or inanimate objects for comfort when we’re feeling down. PscyhCentral writes that anthropomorphizing things can fulfill a social need. When we’re feeling lonely or sensitive, we might want to spend time with our pets, like talk to them. A plushy can also give us comfort, more so if we give it a name and attribute emotions to it.

The psychology behind it is that we then relate to that object or person better. Researchers proved this in a 2021 study, where they found that when people attributed human qualities to nature, they were more likely to care about wildlife conservation.

However, in the case of pets, anthropomorphism can have negative effects too. Researchers found that misunderstandings happen when we tend to treat our pets like people. The thing is that dogs don’t operate like humans do, so trying to explain their behavior in human terms would be wrong.

No, your dog isn’t bringing you the ball because he’s sassy and mad at you. Maybe he just saw a bird or needs more training to do that. That’s why researchers caution people that giving pets human characteristics can lead to instances where it harms their needs and interests.

Adam Waytz tells us that, in the end, human connection has the best benefits for us. “Nonhuman entities may be able to provide social connection, but there is no substitute for a real live human being, so getting too attached to a nonhuman might deprive you [of] the social connection you really need.”

People were quick to call out the boyfriend, pointing out that he was the weird one here

Hi there, fellow pandas! As a person (over)educated both in social sciences and literature, I'm most interested in how we connect and behave online (and sometimes in real life too.) The human experience is weird, so I try my best to put its peculiarities in writing. Car naming is an art. And you're not always in control. I tried to name my car (a white minivan that always save the day for everyone) as the mighty Leviathan, or the Enterprise, or even Stay Puft. Nope, my wife and my friends call him Roliço, that is Portuguese for "fatso". He doesn't seem to mind, so it stuck.

Don't worry Pandas on wheels, Vincent/Vince and I had a pretty fast discussion as well and decided OP isn't an A-hole, but an imbecilic dingbucket that doesn't deserve his ex or Angie. We read that he got dumped and that he thanked us for the judgments. Well, on behalf of Vince and I, YOU ARE WELCOME!!! -_-"

My mum always calls her cars Bessie, short for Bessie Emma. The reason being that for a long time she only drove Peugeot 504s and they looked like her Aunt Bessie. Anyway, I've recently seen a photo of the human Bessie Emma and she does actually look a bit like a 504, turns out.

I liked The Hun! I think Angie and her human are well rid of this guy. Not because he doesn't want to play, but because of how he approached it. Had he said to her in private that it bothered him, that would have been fine. They could have discussed the issue and split amicably, with no A in the picture. Instead, he chose to embarrass her in front of friends while she was doing him and the friends a pretty serious favor.

I disagree with bringing it up even in private. The only reason to bring something up is if you want the person to change it, and that is such a non problem. Either the OP kinda found her annoying already, or he really needs to get some perspective on what is a reasonable expectation of others.

I bought the Minnow in 2012 after my divorce and for a few months I stayed with a friend in a rural area. If I needed to go into town for errands, I generally did them all at once so my friend said I should call her that because every trip was a 'three hour tour.' The Minnow turned 21 this year! If we can name boats, why not cars?!

I wish this was just a silly joke. It isn't I'm sure, but the guy...yeah, he is a joke. I've heard of men being jealous of their GF's friends and resenting time spent with anyone but themselves. Object personification is an interesting thing, isn’t it? I haven’t bought my own car and never thought about naming cars (though as a kid I did pretend all cars were Transformers), but I guess that if/when I buy one, I’ll name it Ratchet (after my favourite Transformer).

Ok, so, I've named my cars in the past, but don't currently have one for my car, but I have nothing wrong with it. But, if OP thought it was weird, then he should have talked about it to her alone and in a gentle way. Pointing it out in front of others in a condescending way while she's literally doing you a favor is pretentious as hell and not how you communicate in a relationship. So while others will say YTA because naming cars is normal, I'd also say YTA because of how he communicated with her.

He had a girl who was willing to drive him about, fix it when it broke and fill it with gas. And he risked all that because she called the car Angie??? He really didn't appreciate what he had. I know a lot of men who would be more than happy to join in for a girl that looked after her car instead of calling them to fix it (or worse, calling another man to fix it).

My car was Jezebel. She had an emergency vet fund for when she got sick amongst other typical anthropomorphisms. Not only is this just a quirk I have, it has a function - it was much easier (and less painful) for me to budget for my car's expenses if I thought of her as a creature (after years of horse care this came naturally, but I was used to free public transport as I'm disabled).

Apart from that I have always tried to talk about or to computers politely, and as a result I almost never have trouble with them while colleagues who didn't or even bad mouthed theirs had their computers acting out all the time. tbh, I never took the car thing as far as OP's ex gf. But I did name my previous car, a Nissan juke, "junebug" just because I thought it was cute and it reminded my of the OG VW beetle. Wasn't so happy when the transmission broke and left me stranded on the roadside though! It took months and thousands of $ to get a replacement gearbox. I just got it back fixed after a very long wait, and only 3 weeks after I gave up and bought a second hand Toyota Vitz. So now I'm selling Junebug, our relationship failed, but I've got Vitz to get me around in economical style. ;-) All three of us, Vitz, Junebug and I, think OP is TA for not appreciating the service Angie and her owner did him, transporting him and his drunk friends to and from the bar.

My truck is Hot Daniel (from Adventure Time 😹) and he's been a reliable companion for over 7 years. Got him from a junk yard for $750, and there's been no major problems. A couple years ago the fuel injector went out (luckily a rather easy and inexpensive fix when it comes to vehicular malfunction) but late that night after my truck was towed home and dumped in front of my house I sat in the trusty driver seat with my forehead on the steering wheel and I WEPT. Luckily it was found out a few days later to be that easy fix, and was done. Yes I have coworkers younger than my truck ('98 Dodge Ram) but to me he is the best vehicle

It's okay to communicate annoyance, but there are better ways to do it than in front of a jury of one's peers. For example, my husband told me in private "I don't want to hear about X", and I was fine with it because it's about something in the past and not need to rehash the same c**p.

Car naming is an art. And you're not always in control. I tried to name my car (a white minivan that always save the day for everyone) as the mighty Leviathan, or the Enterprise, or even Stay Puft.

I got angry reading that it is anthropomorphizing to give a cat and dog a name, but it is necessary to be able to call them. Apart from that I have always tried to talk about or to computers politely, and as a result I almost never have trouble with them while colleagues who didn't or even bad mouthed theirs had their computers acting out all the time. When I was asked to swap computer with a colleague whose computer gave trouble I had no trouble with his but my old one broke down after one day in his company.

I had an old skool Fiat Panda. After almost 20 years she broke down on the highway and I had to leave it there to be picked up by a tow truck the next day. I could not sleep that night. I kept thinking of my Panda all alone on the side of the highway...

We had a vote to name the family car. We didn't speak about the car like it was a person but it did have a personality. By no means weird.

tbh, I never took the car thing as far as OP's ex gf.

He was a jerk for his timing and his wording, for sure. That being said, it's one thing to name your car, but to say things like Angie was thirsty, angie needs a new shoe - that would annoy me.

I've named ALL my cars AAANNNDDD my kitchen appliances and pots and pans. My family goes along with it and uses the names that are given. So I guess we're a family full of weirdos. Oh, my dad named all his bbq grills too, so I think OP is the weird embarrassing one

I think he’s an 🫏🕳️ because poor Angie is walking (driving) around being called “Angie” when her name is actually “Heather.”

Was highly amused by all the other cars saying hi. My first car was a rather used Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally Edition, " my Prince ". 💙 I'm literally getting my first "like-new" car tomorrow!! I wonder what her name will be. 🤍

I thought only men named their cars and treated them as something unrealistically special. Nice to see that women do it too. Overall it is a harmless quirk, and OP was stupid.

My first car was Pearl (pink Ford escort 4door in "sunrise red" aka color changing magenta-to-fuchsia, it was my mom's), next was Ruby Frankenstien (originally red, multicolored after I wrecked it and had silver, white, black, and green panels), there's been Rufio, Caddyshack, and my current one hasn't earned a name.

NTA. But she was definitely right to break up with him. It's a weird quirk. One that isn't going away. You're either into it or you're not. If you're not, you're incompatible.

myself, my sister, some friends have named cars for ages... there's nothing like saying "C'mon Duane, you can make this hill!" when struggling up incline. I've also named my instruments.

It's okay to communicate annoyance, but there are better ways to do it than in front of a jury of one's peers. For example, my husband told me in private "I don't want to hear about X", and I was fine with it because it's about something in the past and not need to rehash the same c**p.

NTA. It depends how she says it, but it isn't normal, and may indicate some sort of disorder or baggage from the past. Definitely better for them to separate though.
