There are unsung heroes out there who are willing to donate their hair to adults and children going through cancer treatment out of the goodness of their hearts. These folks part ways with their hair, then it is processed and made into real hair wigs for people who have lost their own.
Fortunately, through the magic of the internet, these heroes can get at least a moment in the spotlight, as many show before and after pics, which we have gathered here. Bored Panda got in touch with the Little Princess Trust to learn more about what they do and what people can do to donate. First and foremost, we wanted to know more about their activities.
“The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young people who have lost their own hair to cancer treatment or to other conditions like Alopecia. Thanks to its supporters who not only donate their hair but also fundraise, The Little Princess Trust provides around 2,000 real hair wigs every year to children and young people up to the age of 24. It was set up in 2005 in memory of Hannah Tarplee. A year earlier, she had been diagnosed with a Wilms Tumor and the loss of her hair was especially traumatic.”

After 61 Months, It Was Time For The Big Chop. 30 Inches Of Hair Is Going Towards Children With Hair Loss
“Her parents felt the most fitting tribute to the five-year-old would be a charity dedicated to providing wigs to children who had lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other conditions. The Little Princess Trust was born, and the charity has now provided wigs to more than 15,000 young people of all genders. The charity is also one of the largest charity funders of childhood cancer research in the UK.”

He Grows His Hair Out Every Three Years To Donate And Wants To Share It With People Who Can Benefit From It
He is a pediatric physical therapist and works with a wide variety of patients. A lot of them have had to shave their hair due to surgeries.

It is a NGT or nasogastric feeding tube, mostly given to patients with gastric problems that cannot swallow or patients that are in a coma and can't eat.

As someone who used to have very long hair (about 1 meter long) which was a (very big) part of my identity, I would have certainly considered myself brave if I had the heart to cut most of it off. Once it took me a couple of days to deal with emotions from having to cut off 20 cm to make the rest look healthier.

Nikhilesh says, "I've always had a complicated relationship with my hair. Growing up, teachers used to tell me I needed to comb my hair, and the other kids would say it looked like a bird's nest. This created a lot of insecurity about my hair, so I started straightening it in high school to try and fit in with everyone else. One day, I didn't straighten my hair, and a girl told me my hair looked beautiful. Long hair has given me so much confidence and helped me care less about other people's opinions. Although I'm nervous about losing this part of my identity that has grown with my hair, I think I'm ready to experience something new. These locks have empowered me in so many ways, and I'm glad they will continue to make a difference, empowering kids that have lost their hair to help them look like the rockstars they truly are."

I'm curly haired and I lived through the same thing. Probably not as bad being a woman, but I was always teased. I straightened it all through high school trying to fit in. Now I leave it curly all the time and I love it. It really is life changing to accept yourself 💜 So happy for you

That is what I ,accidentally, ended up doing. I didn't have time to go get a haircut after having my son, and was ok with always keeping it in a ponytail. 3.5 years after it was time to go have my daughter and didn't want to have to deal with long hair in the hospital. I have trimmed it once or twice after having her, but it's growing so maybe by the end of the year or early next year, I will make another donation (My daughter is 3.5 now, I will donate when she is closer to 4)

Depending on his occupation, it is probably a safety standard. My son had to cut his hair and shave his beard when he joined the elite underground rescue team within his company. He is a heavy equipment mechanic at a salt mine working nearly 300m underground beneath the Detroit River. They cannot have anything on them that may compromise their safety or that of the person(s) they are evacuating. Facial hair can obstruct the proper fit and seal of their respirator, causing toxic gas to seep in. Hair getting caught in a winch, pulley, chain etc.

I just donated my hair to "Wigs For Kids". I do it every 4-years cause I was a patient who had a procedure to remove a tumor in my brain when I was very young. I was lucky enough not to go through the chemo treatment, but it still took a long time to recover.
If anyone here reads this, it would be kind to donate something like money, plasma, blood marrow, hair, or even just a little bit of your time to spend with those who don't have the privilege to even step out of the hospital so they know they're not alone. This would be a kind gesture.

Decided To Donate My Curls After 3 Years Of Growth
I started growing out my hair at the start of the pandemic. I was able to avoid catching COVID for 3-years, only to get it about a month ago. Felt like it was time to get it cut. I work for an organization that hosts 5k each year to support a local family in need. To help raise money for the little boy we are running for, I challenged my employees to donate money to the 5k. For every dollar that they donated, they could vote for a hairstyle. At the end of the voting period, whichever hairstyle had raised the most money would be how I cut my hair. Bald pulled ahead and won by a landslide.
I cut off 14 inches of curls yesterday and donated them to "Wigs For Kids". I will miss my curls, but hopefully, I'll be able to help someone else have their own head full of curls.

Often true but this is also due to the fact that when you plan to donate your hair you stop going to the hairdresser at some point and stop getting a hairstyle because you want all your hair to be about the same length and you need a certain minimum length (25-30 cm/10-12 inches). So after a certain point you just start looking something in-between boring and 'really in need of haircut's ;) I am looking forward to having my pixie again in about half a year, bc right now, I too look very plain.

She has brown hair with highlights, and I'm a (dark)red head with blond highlights. :) Both of our hair is a little bit over halfway down our backs. I'm so excited!

I love these! As a child I had long hair because I was growing it out until I was 10-11. I had never cut it. When I did end up cutting it, I was told I couldn't donate it? My hair wasn't dead or anything of the sort, really. I took good care of it. I was told by my parents no one would want such an ugly color, (I'm a brunette.) So that turned into younger me hating my hair color and being ashamed of it. My mother had cancer twice, and she's went bald on multiple occasions. I grew up in a abusive house. (No, my mother wasn't the one to stop me from donating it, my dad at the time was.) Luckily, we got out of there, and he's been in and out of prison for selling drugs and assault. He has multiple other families, and he is both mentally and physically abusive. I was once looking for more information about him, and found an article about him putting loaded guns and a meth mashine next to a two year old (who was apparently me.) I’m surrounded by people with long hair. Friends and my community, which is rural Hawai’i and off-grid. So, a lot of hippies and Polynesians. I don’t have the patience to grow my hair out, but I often tease them all by good-heartedly referring to them as “hair farmers.” You know, because they’re cultivating hair. In the case of people who donate their gorgeous locks to charity, they’re literally hair farmers. And I love the idea of thinking about purposefully growing one’s hair out for a cause as hair farming.

The summer before my freshman year of highschool, I got a massive haircut. My hair went from close to halfway down my back to above my ears. I donated 12" of hair.

I have been donating my hair to them every 2-3 years for the last 15 years! It's a great cause. I always take a picture of the braid after they chop it all off.

Often true but this is also due to the fact that when you plan to donate your hair you stop going to the hairdresser at some point and stop getting a hairstyle because you want all your hair to be about the same length and you need a certain minimum length (25-30 cm/10-12 inches). So after a certain point you just start looking something in-between boring and 'really in need of haircut's ;) I am looking forward to having my pixie again in about half a year, bc right now, I too look very plain.

I am a teacher from the Netherlands and I donated my hair 4 times now. I got inspired by a student of mine that had the longest hair. When she cut it and donated it, I wanted her to know she was able to inspire others.

I'm growing my hair out super long right now so that way I can donate it for the first time! I got inspired about a year and a half ago. My younger sister is doing the same thing aswell. She has brown hair with highlights, and I'm a (dark)red head with blond highlights. :) Both of our hair is a little bit over halfway down our backs. I'm so excited!

I love these! As a child I had long hair because I was growing it out until I was 10-11. I had never cut it. When I did end up cutting it, I was told I couldn't donate it? My hair wasn't dead or anything of the sort, really. I took good care of it. I was told by my parents no one would want such an ugly color, (I'm a brunette.) So that turned into younger me hating my hair color and being ashamed of it. My mother had cancer twice, and she's went bald on multiple occasions. I grew up in a abusive house. (No, my mother wasn't the one to stop me from donating it, my dad at the time was.) Luckily, we got out of there, and he's been in and out of prison for selling drugs and assault. He has multiple other families, and he is both mentally and physically abusive. I was once looking for more information about him, and found an article about him putting loaded guns and a meth mashine next to a two year old (who was apparently me.) I am glad to say we are doing (somewhat) better now.
