Even though we all have (hopefully) felt cozy at some point, it can be hard to pinpoint what exactly makes a space relaxing. A lack of chaos and noise is a great starting point, but most of us also like to feel warm and snug. But obviously, you can’t just add twenty blankets to a room and call it a day (in most circumstances.)
However, there are still a few pointers to keep in mind that might help you make a space that works for you. At the same time, as in food and fabrics, texture is another often overlooked feature. Unlike a steak or a pastry, adding texture to a room is a little bit harder. Generally, this involves adding details to the walls, like posters, textured wallpaper, as well as furniture that touches the walls of the room. Some even recommend fabric walling, if your building can support it.

I hate this, particularly for a child. Kids need color. Heck, adults need color. I was in prison for 11 years. Beige, grey, brown, black, and white. Those were the only "colors" that were allowed. You all should have seen me at the airport when I was released. It was like a festival for the eyes. I saw red, purple, green, yellow, blue, pink, and all the colors in between! Two years later, I still refuse to wear anything beige, grey, brown, black, or white.

If you're renting, or just not allowed to paint for whatever reason, an option for changing the color of any/all walls is tapestries (you don't even have to put holes in the wall anymore thanks to 3M Command Strips that are strong enough to support curtain rods). And some fabric stores will give you a discount on older fabrics (or if you purchase an entire bolt), so it can be fairly inexpensive, too.

I don’t know why you’d be downvoted on this question. So have an upvote. The peace lily doesn’t need much light. The darker the room the darker the foliage but it will probably mean it won’t flower. As to the others the owner might do what my friend does, move them around the house every so often so they wouldn’t be stuck in the dark year round. 🙂

When you're a Freshman (1st year) you are usually assigned a roommate that you have never met before. After that you can choose to room with whoever you want, after you make friends during the year. You don't really get to pick a room your first year, although you can request a certain building. For your second year you DO get to choose your room - we had a lottery where you got assigned a number randomly, and everyone chose rooms in that order. You had to come prepared with several choices in case your first choice had already been picked. It's very popular right now for girls to buy identical things and do their rooms like this. When I was in college we just decorated our side of the room however we wanted and our roommate did the same. But I'm old. :)

Those cement walls look cold. I'm guessing there is a fireplace or woodstove in the room, based on the firewood next to the bedside table that looks like you could easily smack your hand on it accidentally because it's too high compared to the mattress. Also, pallet bed "frames" are tripping/stubbing your toe hazards.

I absolutely hate the number of these that have these bland, washed-out, boring-a$$ colors if they have any color at all. My cubicle farm office is more colorful than this cr@p.
