It can be quite illuminating to realize that what we tend to think of as visually pleasing often isn’t some objective, cosmic standard, but just a set of attributes our society currently values. I’m a woman and long nails make me visibly uncomfortable. Hygiene is a major concern but also how do you touch/hold delicate objects without your nails scratching the surfaces?!

I had some done recently as a trial for my wedding nails. They drove me mad for a number of reasons - couldn’t type properly, couldn’t fasten my jewellery - but I didn’t have any issues with hygiene. You use the flats of your fingers, rather than the tips, for more than you realise. I didn’t injure myself or fail to keep myself clean in any way and I loved the way they looked (but took them off after a few days as they were too annoying).

I think they're pretty and I own ten well-cared for ones, but to each their own. It's just a bit of a learning curve, once you learn how to do things with them you can keep them clean.

Brows alternate between thick and think in fashion - which is a disaster if thin was in and you overplucked! Soap brows look greasy, I can't wait for more natural brows to be back

Some women don’t have a choice. They’re expected to be back sooner also when in the army. Fit back in pre pregnancy uniforms, be able to pass their PT test, and some units don’t even have a place for them to pump. My DIL was one of these many women. So much pressure was placed on her after delivering my granddaughter and it sucked.

My paternal grandpa was bald, think looked like a a bird nest bald. It never bothered him a bit. He came from a different time though, he was a lumber man. My father looked like he was tonsured, it drove him nuts. I got mine from the maternal side, a full head of bushy hair and there are days I would trade it for grandpa's look

The fact that women’s bodies go in and out of ‘fashion’ has always been highly disturbing to me, as well as the lengths some go to achieve it. I feel sad about it.

They go in and out of fashion to suit the clothes of the time, rather than fashion designers actually thinking about how to make clothes to suit the bodies. There are some designers who do think about this, but they don't get the same fame the 'popular' looks get.

So much this!!!!! I was a curvy teen back in the late '90s when "h****n chic" was the thing. First I thought I was just objectively unattractive because I was "fat ". Then I realized other eras valued curves and I was sad. Eventually I realized what absolute BS it all is and got angry! The pressure society puts on people, especially young women, to conform to arbitrary and ever changing standards is just cruel. Particularly when those standards are not about styling, but the literal body you were born with.

I wouldn't say "out of fashion" but more desirable depending on the decade, in several points in time it was attractive to have visible meat on your bones, mostly because it meant you were eating good and could afford to eat good

That is where it started. Pale skin used to be fashionable because it meant you didn't have to work outside. Then people began going to the French Riviera etc wearing fashions that exposed skin and that's when it changed. In western culture anyway. In a lot of Asian cultures they still go by the original idea, added to the 'racist' (not sure 100% correct term because I'm not sure if it's between races or subsets) idea that the ones with darker skin naturally were also traditionally the working class. There is a documentary by one of the Queer Eye guys about skin lightening in Asian cultures that is interesting to see.

I've had 4 spinal surgeries and suffer from muscle spasms. The warmth/heat of the tanning bed relieves my pain and spasms by relaxing everything. I only go when I need to. I call it "my 15 minutes of physical therapy".

I'm confident I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I believe that sunbeds emit mostly UV-A (safe), with little UV-B (harmful, ionizing), so you have to disable the timer and stay on them a long time to have a problem. Having a tan gives some protection against UV-B from sunlight, which is why our bodies do it.

OHHHHHHHH!!! I got a really good one. Back in December, I was in the ER with a heart issue that required Mt to be cardioverted. The doc, who is fabulous, took a call before the cardiovevrsion. He came back a few minutes later. It was his 20-year-old daughter calling him because she wanted Botox. All of us in the room did the "WTF" thing. He said "yeah, I told her no way in H*ll."

Saw one of my school friend’s wedding photos recently on instagram. His wife looked gorgeous but she had on extremely thick (caterpillar like) fake eyelashes with a copious amount of eyeliner. It was so strikingly obvious and I couldn’t just notice anything else in the subsequent photos.

I had a wedding makeup trial today. I asked for red lips, smoky eyes and natural looking skin. She kept trying to bronzer on and contour my face to look different. I just wanted to look like a more glamorous version of myself, not a different person. (She ended up making me look like a geisha. Not what I was going for and I won’t be using her services!)

Not every woman needs to wear makeup! But, makeup is one of those things- along with clothing and accessories- that communicates "who" that person is (or wants to be). It is a form of self-expression. And anyone who gets makeup for a wedding is supposed to have a consultation and a "run-through". A professional will know this and encourage it. Also, makeup for photos should be applied a LITTLE more because of distance and the limitations of cameras. But it should always look like the person in real life, just smoother and not blotchy. (I am a professional Make Up Artist)

My best friend never wears a lot of make up, pretty natural looking. Ahead of her second wedding, another friend offered to do a makeup trial for her. She went really heavy on all of it and my best friend said it looked terrible (this other friend has always put on a lot of makeup herself so styled it like that). She told the other friend as nicely as possible it just wasn't the look she wanted and it just didn't look like her. She chose something a lot more like her normal look on the day.

Eyebrow trends. Especially when people make trendy eyebrows permanent like over plucked 90s shape and they don't grow back, or tattoo ombre in the 2010s. Every decade they change it up but the decade is just stuck on someone's face.

Makes me laugh. 2 of my sisters insisted on getting their eyelashes done twice a month. After a decade of going to their eyelash ladies, they no longer have natural eyelashes. And we come from a family of people with thick, luscious lashes. They just went because it was easier to go for a 10 minute fix every two weeks instead of using mascara every day

Overly whitened teeth. I find it really unappealing. I've merrily dated people with uneven or yellowing teeth, and as long as their oral hygiene is good it's fine. Over whitened teeth makes me think about cavity pain idk why.

When did style individually exist? Look at every decade. In every decade, everyone is following the same trends and wearing the same type of clothes with the same hair and makeup. Even the kids in the edgy/outsider groups for each decade looked like one another.

Eh, I don't see the problem. If you're really flat and want to have bigger breasts, then go for it. Just make sure to not overdo it, and get it at a reputable place and not on a budget. Sure plastic surgery can look absolutely awful, and making your butt so big it can't fit in a car-seat is ridiculous, same with the obvious lip filler or Botox. But if you really hate how flat you are or genuinely don't like your nose, then what's the harm in looking the way you feel happy and comfortable with?

Amen! That's what I say about my grey hair. I have been 100% grey since my early 20s. Hated it at first and dyed it for years and years until I realised it actually looks beautiful. Nuanced in a way dyed hair isn't, and it suits my skin tone. Plus it has got me more compliments than my dyed hair ever did!

The bleach blonde with grown out roots look always leaves me feeling extremely confused.
To me, it gives the impression that you fully committed to a color, and then completely forgot that that was what you were doing for the last couple of months. I feel like this has been puzzling me for over a decade now.

What annoys me is that I hate the look of lip liner and , unfortunately, the border of my lips is naturally hyperpigmented and it always looks like I'm wearing lip liner! It's really bad if for some reason my lips suddenly decide that they want to be "less inflamed than usual" and go a little more pale... then - suddenly - I look like I'm wearing a liner 4 shades darker than my lips (gah! I always thought of darker liner as trashy... but - there I am - helplessly looking trashy...)

Eyelid surgery in Asian countries, your eyes are very pretty. Skin bleaching, your skin looks beautiful, sunny and rich. Straightening Afro or curly hair, the big curly hair is literally to die for I love it. Irish girls giving themselves skin cancer on tanning beds to not be pale, your dark hair and Irish skin are so striking. Nose jobs, everyone’s noses are so cute before. Any surgery or alteration to colouring etc is just wild to me. Also anti-aging, wrinkles are beautiful, and greying hair im excited to have grey hair it’s so cool, natural hair dye.

Funny you mention that, my best friend is a research prof at a university, and over the winter holidays she was back in town, so we were catching up. While commiserating over aging (we're both 37), I mentioned the increase in white/gray hair on both of our heads. Now I've had bits of white in my otherwise pitch black hair since I was 12, but my friend has not. She was, surprisingly, pumped as hell to be going gray, and was looking forward both to seeing how it would look, and to being taken more seriously in academia as she is a very small, petite woman who is frequently misidentified as an undergrad

As long as it's not because of outside pressure or you do it to a degree where it looks ridiculous, then I don't see a problem with surgery or using creams to lighten/ tan your skin. If that's how you want to look and you feel happier and more comfortable, then why not? Obviously you shouldn't go do it at a budget place, but at a reputable one. But I don't think there's anything wrong with changing yourself to feel more comfortable. Same with tattoos, hair-dye or piercings, as long as you don't end up looking to dumb, then who cares.

Putting on your foundation with a literal paint brush.
I get there’s been massive strides in formulations but I see people put in layer after layer of concealers and foundations and I just can’t imagine having all that product just sitting on my face all day. Do these people not itch their nose? Rest a hand on their chin? How does this makeup look after a full day? It just seems like…… too much.

I have Rosacea and it makes my face red so I use some makeup. In my case, I have hyperhidrosis so I sweat a c**p ton. I usually wear sweatproof foundation, no concealer, and it stays all day.

Any trend that makes the body a fad. Everyone has a different body type, composition, weight etc. To imagine that you can diet your way into having a Kim Kardashian figure without surgery is unrealistic and its dangerous. She doesnt even have that figure without surgery. All you have to do is eat better and be more active and dress for your body type.
Also Veneers. It doesn't look natural to have bright white 8x10 teeth. You can 1000% tell when its not natural.

I have to disagree on veneers. My teeth were discolored by tetracycline when I was a child, so even clean they looked gray. Mine are not bright white, just what the dentist believed was a color that would have been normal without the discoloration.

I don't judge people for their body hair or lack thereof. Personally though, I just love feeling smooth. I hate the feeling of stubble and hard wax tends to take my skin with it... so, my epilator and I have become besties over the years.

I agree, I need smooth legs because they get less itchy and I shave my underarms for the same reason and to reduce bo. I don't care what others do, but for me that feels best. My stepdad has been a hippie since the 60s and always says 'women shouldn't remove their hair, it's not natural' which is great that he is accepting of hair as opposed to 'beauty standard' but he is putting down those that make the other choice. It really bugs me because just because he is pro hair, doesn't mean he should be regulating other's choices.

This is so true. I'm unfortunately the type that I can shave in the shower and then if I get a little too cold when I get out, my body hair has already come back as stubble. My body hair grows very fast but I usually shave twice per week.

I'm 63 and don't even have to shave my legs anymore during warm weather and only have to do my underarms about every 3 weeks. As you get older it thins out and doesn't grow as fast.

Unfortunately I've known people who didn't shave, and they had a tendency to not take care of their hair, or body odor. Like sure you don't have to shave, but if you don't you need to take more care in washing and using deodorant. It's also not something I personally like seeing, and feeling hairy really bothers me. My aunt has always been slim and healthy. She has developed an eating disorder and now eats one small meal per day. She is skeletal and looks awful. I have no idea how to support her. Her kids and siblings are encouraging her to go to therapy but she doesn't see a problem. :(

I find my fiance, the father of my two beautiful children, INCREDIBLY attractive. Every day. Regardless of how much or little sleep he's had. He's gorgeous. I sometimes weird him out by how much I stare at him with 😍 love-heart eyes.
He's never worn makeup in his life.
If I don't wear it, I feel like I look like a literal man, and not an attractive one.
I get that it's very much subjective to a point, but I do blame "society" for instilling this (incorrect, I know) idea that a woman's face isn't complete or attractive without it having been augmented in SOME way, even if it's just a dash of mascara.

Some people just don't have one, and some people do. Sure there are people who can loose weight and get one, but that's far from everyone

I'm not a fan either but some people have naturally extremely thin eyebrows, I don't see a problem with them wanting to permanently darken/define them versus drawing them on every single day.

Yes. But you gotta be careful who does the permanent makeup. They are expensive but I haven't found one that can do it well. Please, try to err on the side of caution. I can't stand the eyebrows just a bit too close together, I can see it and I don't like it. Also, if the shape is unnatural or doesn't suit the face. I have always had sparse thin brows but think I should attempt to do it myself because I don't want to look like a clown!!

This has become illegal in Sweden since last year. Several brands and stores can/will no longer sell to anyone under 18. (There was a situation where a 13 yo girl almost got trampled to death at a beauty store opening where several children had already camped outside the store since the day before. So that finally got attention to why these kids were buying products aimed at people with skin problems or people over 30)

The online asian trend of glass skin and hair that, for some reason, influencers are trying so hard to achieve. If you don't have good lighting and filters following you around, you will look greasy. It's obvious this trend was meant to only look good on camera. I've seen it in person a good handful of time, and it has never looked good.

The hairless face thing that's everywhere right now! Why does it matter???? You literally have to have a special spray to IDENTIFY THE HAIRS because you CAN'T SEE THEM WELL ENOUGH TO SHAVE OFF.
I can understand shaving the hair on your upper lip and shaping your eyebrows, both things I do, one of them because I can feel the hair when I breath and hate it and one because I dislike monobrows (***PERSONAL PREFERENCE***) but to take the time to shave your whole face when the hairs can't even be seen just seems ridiculous to me.

In east asia where I live, it's the standard for under eye fat bags (aegyo sal) where people either get fillers to achieve the look, or just draw a brown line under their eye fat bags to accentuate those fat bags. Apparently it makes your eyes look bigger and you appear cuter, but it was never cute for me. I thought it rather looked puffy when accentuated.

I do this with make up, it takes a bit of practice to not look like you're sick or been crying all day. But if you do it right (and have an eye shape where it's flattering) it does make your eyes look bigger, and can make them "pop" in a different way. I don't understand why anyone would do it with surgery when you can just do it with make up though

Boys short hair. Girls long hair and makeup. Long hair needs a lot of care. This plus makeup makes it harder to just get up, shower, dress and go, depending on the type of hair you have. I always thought this was weird. Like a kind of way to make women less flexible.

I love short hair! During the pandemic once the lockdowns eased I went and got a buzz cut cause I’ve always wanted one. I was anyway expecting to spend the next several months at home attending classes online so thought I’ll experiment a bit. This was around summer 2020 and I just loved how comfortable it felt to have such short hair in the hot months. And it took significantly less time to shower, dry out the hair, and make my hair. I can’t wait to try this again sometime.

Mine is mid shoulder length, I wash it, take the towel off a few mins later and comb it out. I think I've only used my hairdryer a couple of times in the last 3 or 4 years. Cold weather I wash it in the evening and the only time I wear makeup is for a wedding, funeral or Christmas party if I go.
