As cliche as it sounds, masters of crafts aren't born. They're made through hard work, failure, and perseverance. So while someone hasn't traveled far on the road to excellence, they are destined to make mistakes. And the subreddit '[Bad] Woodworking' has plenty of examples to prove it.

Sharing pictures of various projects falling short of their ideal version, this online community embraces Bob Ross' happy accident approach and provides quite a few lighthearted giggles along the way. Whether it's a child's pencil holder or a driver's phone holder, if there's a production, there's a way to mess it up!

This is my absolute favourite here, craft projects by 3 -6 year olds. 😍 --- PS: I was gifted a "wish fulfiller" once, it was made out of colourful corn puff things (looks like mini marshmallows, you wet them and you stick them together there, so you can create little sculptures). Mine looks like a dragonfly 😍 and is very helpful.

My parents' house had a summer kitchen my brother and I used as a playhouse/toy storage. When he was 13, my brother kicked the door open as he usually did, and it fell off. He and I looked at each other and said, "Dad's going to kill us." My brother handed ten year old me the heavy wooden door to hold as he moved the hinges on it. (The wood was rotten.) He forgot to move the hinges on the frame. He took the door, to try to hang it back up, but it hung six inches too low. My snotty contribution was, "Well, it fit before!" Having absolutely no other option in his teenaged mind, my brother sawed the six inches off the bottom of the door and rehung it. We were both shocked at the six inch gap at the top of the door. When Dad got home from work, we were innocently standing ramrod straight, arms down at our sides, with horribly fake smiles plastered to our faces. Dad immediately asked us what we'd done, and as every child since the dawn of time, we replied, "Oh, nothing."

One time at school we had a snowstorm... so we found some empty ring-binders and used those as sleds. TBF, they only really functioned to keep our bums from getting cold and wet.

Many insiders believe that woodworking is somewhat easy to become decent at but takes a lifetime to master.

Even Paul Sellers, whose biography as a woodworker began in a small joiner's workshop in 1965 in Stockport, England, and who now has two of his pieces gracing the Cabinet Room of the White House, calls himself "a lifelong amateur woodworker."

    1) We have several boxes of old screws to use for scrap projects, so I get it. (although these look new...) HOWEVER, judging by the heads probably only one is intended for use with wood... I'm not sure the others hold that well. 2) They were put in at a slanted angle. Also, the heads weren't designed to sink into wood so they stick out more. 3) No idea. Maybe failed attempts of trying slanted angles? But there was little reason fr that, either... 4) Possibly to post it in threads like this...

Sellers has spent a large part of his working life in the USA where he taught woodworking courses and he advises everyone to embrace the challenges. "Throughout my work teaching classes hands-on, I learned from students what troubles them the most. Cutting square, planing square, cutting straight and sharpening a perfect edge, the list could be exhausting were we to go down that road," he recalled.

"We could soon convince one another that we should just go the machine route. And yet there is something truly magical every time you develop a very particular skill you never thought you could or would own."

we had one of these, except it had a hinged door so it didn't rotate in like that. we decided to just find another home for what was in there, and fill it with light weight plastic bowls and all of those odd lids that go to nothing, and other harmless things and just let the toddler have his fun with it. kept him occupied and we never had to worry about him getting into other stuff because that one was "his".

It's not s****y and the dogo will use it in time. But put some antislip rubber in it. I have a primitive one next to my bed and after about six months, my dog is now using it to get down. I am hoping, she'll eventually use it to get up the bed, aswell. It is a high boxspring one and she is small and elderly.

"Thinking back through my years as a full-time, lifetime, lifestyle maker, I can recall every step where I earned my ability through my stubborn determination not to give up. Some recollections came when I was one step away from giving up and giving in. In that split second, a lone voice, barely audible, said just one more try. There it was. The launch was complete and I was flying in euphoria as all resistance left, the cut was made and the two pieces slipped perfectly together for the very first time," the woodworker explained.

I'm not hating this. If the dimensions are what I am wildly guessing they are, then I think this could work for several uses on a patio.

The moderators of '[Bad] Woodworking' said that, ideally, they would like to see more engagement, as they're sure there is plenty of "content" being created nearly daily in every neighborhood, "but probably most people would be put off by having their work labeled as [bad] here."

"It seems to be a space for people that are capable of more and have respectable creations, but need a quick solution and would agree that what they made is a bit comical."

My husband create very similar night table which he is very proud of. Yes, night stand. And now I can't get rid of it. I tolerated it for year and was hoping slowly it will move to garage, but nope. Still there, and he's showing it to every mate who visits him. Tempted to set it on fire and pretend it was flashlight.

That depends on the nature of what's being lifted. If all you are doing is lifting something straight off the bed of a truck and setting it on the ground, I'd say 400lbs capacity would be reasonable.

I would have gone with an angled roof but otherwise I can assure you: at least tits won't care if it looks like this. They nest in letterboxes, abandoned watering-cans and whatever else you have lying around at roughly 1m above ground. Just remember to clean it once in a while after it was used.

Found some ca. 40mm thick particle board and made a replacement. Put that in bottom position, the one from there replaced the broken top one, and they NEVER noticed.

Why stop there? All you need are another two pieces of wood and it'll be stable af.

I think it's too narrow to be really stable, tough. So maybe put those two pieces on the bottom to widen the stand and voila

A dice-tower. You throw dice in the top and they come out in the shelf. It's so when you throw dice, you don't have to run after them on the floor or have them throw over all your little meeples on the boardgame.

People... If you want to build something that holds quite a lot of weight, you either do proper joints or make sure the weight-holding legs are UNDER the weight to be held. As it is, you put all your faith in the screws that are SIDEWAYS in the weight and weight-holding legs. That's not gonna hold for long as you now have shearing-forces on the wood and not top-forces (sorry, my woodworking-vocabulary is severely lacking)

Okay but this is obviously a pic after they disassembled the deck. Some of the wood has rotted and therefore isnt wher they are supposed to be, but it's not actually all that bad, I'd say. The beams are elevated so they don't touch the ground - important! As we can see where it did touch ground, the poles are rotten through. Not the right kinds of screws, I'd say, as some beams have sunken down. And maybe not the right wood (but I don't know how long this one was standing okay before it got taken down)

Definitely not treated pine on the beams, if they've managed to rot without being in contact with the ground. Unless it's termites. You can tell where the beams were originally before they started to start ripping it apart. Definitely only looks like a complete mess because of the varying angles that the decking boards were laid (on purpose). Judging by the state of the decking screws, it's been in place for a decade at the least.

You don't use nails for a deck. Way too much movement for nails - screws are the right choice (and preferably non-rusting ones)

The top is crappy but the legs and underwork are fine. Replace the OSB with something better and it's actually pretty neat. Maybe next time put the parallel cross-beams on opposite sides of the leg as you put a lot of strain on the wood-grain like it is. It might shear down like this since the legs aren't very wide.

I've seen people on job sites come in and set up, and then build a work desk just like this for the job site. The tear it down and toss it with the scrap lumber and build another one at the next job. They are sturdy and two people can make one in 5 minutes or less. Nice job on the interlocking joints
