Let’s do a quick experiment, shall we, Pandas? Think about the best teachers you’ve ever had. See how easily their faces pop up in your imagination? You’re probably even smiling. Okay, now think of the very worst teachers you’ve ever encountered. It feels awful, doesn’t it? The sad truth is that nearly everyone has to deal with at least one toxic educator who was out to make their life miserable. Teachers and professors hold a huge amount of influence in their students’ lives. And that power can be used for good, as well as for ill.

Bored Panda compiled this list of pics of people sharing examples of the most toxic teachers they have ever met. The type of behavior featured in this article is appalling. And it really makes you value quality educators even more.

Keep in mind that if you’ve had awful experiences at school, these pics might bring back some bad memories. Otherwise, feel free to tell us about the best and worst teachers you had at school. We reached out to parenting blogger Samantha Scroggin, from Walking Outside in Slippers, who shared her thoughts on this with us.

"I always try to maintain an open dialogue with my kids, but it doesn’t always work as well as I’d hoped. I think we can’t expect our kids to open up to us on our timeline and our terms. They have to share when and if they want to, and us parents showing a genuine interest in what’s going on in our kids’ lives sets the groundwork for when they’re ready to open up," the blogger said.

Meanwhile, parenting blogger Samantha said that there's no one-size-fits-all approach when dealing with teacher-related issues. However, she revealed to Bored Panda what approach she took not too long ago.

"I actually recently had an issue with my daughter’s first-grade teacher. She is an older teacher who is not very responsive via the school’s email system. Because communicating with her was so difficult, I told the principal at the end of the school year about my struggles with the teacher. I then requested a teacher for next year who I know to be very responsive," the founder of Walking Outside in Slippers said.

"But I don’t think there is any right way to deal with school or teacher issues. I would defer to the parents to decide what is best for their child and situation," she added.

It sometimes feels like certain authority figures are out to get you. It’s not paranoia, though. Some people are so dissatisfied with their lives, so miserable and full of angst that they lash out at those around them.

Unfortunately, there isn’t an exam to thoroughly check if the person hoping to be a teacher is a completely decent human being. There are some bad apples among the droves of hard-working, empathetic educators.

When someone with a dislike for kids and education becomes a teacher, you can’t expect anything good. Some individuals have very low emotional intelligence, and they see their role in the classroom as purely technical: you put in the minimum required work, you get paid.

However, teaching is about far more than just classes, homework, and grading papers. For some, teaching is a calling. And they spare no expense in making their students’ lives better. They help guide them. They support them when they’re down. They thoroughly understand the massive responsibility they have weighing on their shoulders. And they do it anyway, even when they’re exhausted, under-appreciated, and given substandard pay. It’s these educators who we salute.

Yup, same happened to me. Only I had the extra misery of having a teacher for a dad too. Neither parents believed I needed glasses because, and I quote, "no one else in the family needed them so why should I?" Had to get two part time jobs to afford some. Didn't get my first pair of glasses and lenses until I was 16. Much of my schooling was literally a blur.

The way that we approach education in modern times is vastly different from how things were done for, well, pretty all of history. Generally speaking, students are a lot less independent these days. They’re shyer and less proactive, as well.

Childhood independence expert Lenore Skenazy, from Let Grown and the Free-Range Kids movement, went into this with Bored Panda during an earlier interview.

“In the United States, for instance, school only became compulsory a little over 100 years ago. Previously—for hundreds of thousands of years of human history—kids learned simply by watching, copying, helping, and playing,” she explained how learning used to take place.

“In other words, they’d hang around the adults, see how they made things like baskets and arrowheads, they’d ask questions, noodle around, and try to copy what their elders were doing. They’d also help out as soon as they could—fetching things, tracking animals, whatever—and in between they’d be playing with a group of mixed-age kids. All these activities were fueled by curiosity,” she told us.

Same here in Germany. And to not confuse it with a 7 there is often added a little horizontal line in the middle of the 7's "leg".

In dutch we would call that teacher a "azijnzeikerd", it doesn't translate really well (vinigar-pisser) but this is just petty.... it's obviously a one. To grade this as wrong is just wrong, that's not how you motivate the young ones....

4th-9th grade Math teacher here. I teach in the US and have always taught my kiddos to put a line through their 7s, a line through their z's, a slash inside of their zeros, and the variable x with a wavey line crossed by a straight line, as well as teach them the other ways to write multiplication. I've always told my students that if any other teacher complains, corrects them or marks points off, I tell them that is the correct way to write them bc of the reasons listed here and for the teacher who doesnt like it to come to me so I can explain it to them emphasizing that I also have a degree in mathematics, not just middle school math. Shuts them up real quick lol

Yes. But my English teacher taught us that we write 7 differently (with a horizontal line through the long line: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5c/Hand_Written_7.svg ). In English the 7 is without that line, so when we write "English" numbers, we would have to write the 1 differently too.

According to this teacher's logic, 5-a should've also been marked wrong then bc the 2nd grader answered u or y instead of 4... I'm joking. Teachers like this should be the ones losing points on their evaluations

My school system didn't have a very good math program. Instead of accepting that I was failing at math, my grandmother insisted that my number 4 be written with a closed top and that's why I'm failing because of the illegible number 4. Actually if I had done what she suggested, I'd probably get even more points removed from my score because no one wrote it that way. My math teacher was a home Economics teacher. Not sure how they moved her to teach algebra, but that did.

It isn't unique. It's correct. 'I' is a letter (and the first person singular in English language) and 1 is the only correct and appropriate way of writing a number in a numerical context. If you were writing it in a verbal context it would be 'one' so the teacher is exceptionally ignorant and is not qualified to teach maths to toddlers. What the teacher wrote isn't correct in either context.

Maybe the kid should spell out the word "one" underneath the number, for teachers who are too dumb to ask a student to demonstrate how they write the number.

I mean it does kinda look like a seven, but I'm sure the teacher can figure it out. He showed his work as well. Teacher should probably teach the kid (without criticizing him of course) to write it with the horizontal line on the bottom of she's seriously that confused, but don't give his work a bad grade!

This is why Europeans and scientists draw a slash through the middle of a "7" to distinguish it from a "1". The child was merely emulating the style of the numeral exemplified at the top of the paper.

Part of why I cross my 7s, Zs, and 0s is because they kept being mistaken for 1s, 2s and Os in my math assignments as a kid. The teacher should know exactly what the kid is writing.

I substitute taught school k thru 12 and seen a lot of wrong but this one I have to say ... It looks like 7 . Mom that's your queue to teach him to draw a line across the bottom to distinguish between the one and seven. I don't blame the teacher here.

I would talk to the teacher at a PTA meeting or something. The teacher might think the kid is writing a 7, it could be a honest mistake imo

I know in Germany the one looks like the seven in English and the seven is the one with the middle crossed. If this child is to continue in this school system, they will need to assimilate to some degree and it's not worth losing points over. Good lesson for child. Keep in mind that unless you are at School with your child, you haven't heard both sides.

The teacher should have just asked for the student to read back the questionable numbers to determine the student's understanding and later reinforced her preference of writing the number 1 later in a classroom discussion about why that way of writing it confuses her. Our handwriting changes so dramatically throughout our school lives.

That’s very common in Europe. I write sevens with a cross bar so she would have loved failing me.

To give credit, she may not know that is what he means. Without that context to know if the teacher knows this it’s hard to judge. The first one she marked wrong, I am sure he thought it was just an example. She should go to him quietly and say answer this one too, then question if it’s a 7 or one.

If he loved math so much he would stop playing on his cellphone and write math with a pencil and paper on a notepad!Lets be honest the child needs a math tudor! Not the numbers on his cellphone to get a good grade in math! 1!Do you know how many notepads are waiting to be bought at Walmart right now? And number 2 pencils?

I could see it on the 4-3 where it might have been mistaken for a seven, and the kid might have added instead is subtracted, but once teacher realized lower on the page that that was a one they should have gone back and changed it. My son writes his ones like that, even though I recommended he do it differently he kept doing it. I homeschool him so it was fine.

I write my ones not only with the lefthanded tail at the top, but a horizontal line underneath. Somehow, even though a 1 is straight and a 2 is curved, I've had teachers in the past think my 1 is actually a 2. I've literally had to write out 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 just so the teacher could see for themselves that my 1 is very different from my 2. I've also been accused of "making" my numbers "prettier for attention." What, you think I like being yelled at because my teacher can't tell the difference between a 1 and a 2? I write the way I do because everyone has individual handwriting, nothing more, nothing less.

I had the same problem with my kindergarten teacher (who was overall a really bad, dumb, and mean teacher) over the number 4. I wrote it with a pointy, closed top, like it is in this comment. She made a huge deal over it in front of the class (of kindergarten kids learning letters and numbers) and suggested it wasn't a real number. To this day I write a 4 with two upward lines.

I've had this issue with a kindergarden teacher over the number 4. I wrote it with the top connected in a triangle, probably how it looks in this comment. She made a big deal about it in front of the class, suggesting what I wrote was not a real number; to this day I write a 4 with two upwards lines.

I was in IT. I cross my sevens and zeros. Standard to distinguish them from 1s written as this boy does and the letter O. Filled out the mileage for a car I was selling and the woman at the DMV wouldn’t accept it because she said they couldn’t accept any paperwork with mistakes crossed out. She refused to accept that crossed 7s and 0s are not mistakes, but legitimately formed numbers - used by many people all over the world, in fact. I had to pay for a duplicate title and fill it out again *without* any crossed numbers. B***h.

When I was in first or second grade we weren't learning about negative numbers, but I knew about them. My teacher asked the class "what is 1 - 3?" I thought I could be a smarty pants and say -2. The teacher got angry with me, told me I was wrong, the answer is 0 and that negative numbers don't exist. When I moved schools and actually started learning negative numbers I got so mad.

I got into computers very early, so I write ones with a serif, sevens with a dash, zeds with a dash etc. Never had a problem in schools.

My second grade teacher did that to me because i wrote my 9's "wrong". I wrote them rounded like the font this 9 is in. They wanted a 9 shaped like an upside down d. The teacher decided to traumatize me into writing 9s their way by gathering the class around my desk and letting them taunt and jeer at me for doing it wrong until i wrote 9s the way they wanted. Such a helpless and claustrophobic feeling i still have nightmares about it. One of my light nightmares, but still pops up once in a while.

My son had his pencil snatched from his had because he didn’t hold it “properly “, (he held it between his index and middle fingers.) when he told me I went to the school and told the teacher if she did it again she would be looking at abuse changes. No problems after that, he still writes like that.( he was in kindergarten)

Wtf????! In my country we have f*cking stupid (but still) rules regarding HOW you should write every symbol (a number or a letter) in a school's notebook. And actually kiddo did it accordingly to our rules. If MY teacher would see me writing "1" as this teacher did it, they would probably correct it 😅

My sons teacher 'incorrected' his use of the word sneaked to snuck. She was very nice and gracious when I corrected her incorrection. There's nothing wrong with using either word, although 'snuck' more of an American word from late 18th/early 19th century and 'sneaked' has been around a touch longer. But that doesn't matter - don't correct one to the other, they're both fine to use.

I'm defending the teacher here. Those "1's" look way, way, way more like "7's." And, no, they don't look anything like the"1" that OP circled at the top. Not sure I would have taken off points for it, unless he had been doing it all year and had been told to make his "1's" look like "1's" and he just ignored it. You're not doing the child any favors by letting him think he's writing "1" when he's clearly not writing "1." I think it would be cruel to him to just let him go on making the number wrong.

I mean full blown Got up in front of the teacher, pissed. And when she got a suspension she waved out at us as she was driving away her car smiling. She literally was the start of our quote unquote 'revolution' about the bathrooms. eventually the teachers revoked it, when I threatened to take it to the next parent teacher meeting, and threaten to take it in front of the school board. You never know what's going on with a student. When I taught, a kid was kind of blowing off an assignment. I called parents since it was most of a semester grade, and gave him an incomplete so he had more time to finish. We all worked together to keep him on track. Come to find out later mom had liver cancer, and ended up dying about a year later. I really liked the kid and we were working together on this. Parents were grateful. I only found out AFTER about illness. Showed me that there are often circumstances we don't know about.

This definitely isn’t the worse one, and may even be justified - I got the only 10 in the whole school for music one year - even though this class was known to be the easiest 10 ever - because the teacher wanted to acknowledge that I put so much extra effort in - I was the only one insane enough to spend literally every lunchtime doing extracurricular music. Including a string quartet with 3 teachers (yes, it made me super popular, not that I ever was in the first place…). And to be fair, he was probably sick of everyone treating his class like a joke (although it kind of was…) and using the hour to do homework for other classes. He went back to giving practically everyone 10s the year after, but it was nice to be acknowledged like that just once.

Slight defense here as a college professor... If we cancel a class, we have to make up the hour somewhere else. Sometimes it's an extra assignment that is educational and takes about an hour, or a video to watch, or any number of things. That may be the policy with this teacher too. This happens a lot. Teachers think you aren't capable of doing as well as you did so they just arbitrarily deduct points. I wrote a paper in high school for history class. I was an excellent writer even when I was younger; I always got A's in English and was able to take college courses for credit when I was 15. But the history teacher gave me an incomplete because he felt it was 'too' good and needed time to research it to see if I'd plagiarized it. When he couldn't find anything, he deducted 5 points because he considered it late. So ridiculous. Someone being better than you at something shouldn't be punished it should encouraged! Stop being so insecure.

FWIW, after the incident on south campus a few years ago, the university installed locks on the doors of every classroom. In the unlikely event that there is some kind of attack, we can lock the doors at the first sign of danger. There has never been a single case of a mass shooter breaching a locked door, so this is an extremely effective defense especially as Dodd 121 has no windows".
