Google "holy week portugal" or "hooded procession portugal" and you'll see loads of "KKK" costumes which are anonymous (that's the point of both costumes!) penitents. Brazil being an ex-Portuguese colony, the resemblance with KKK is obvious but there's no confusion.

As a Brazilian, I feel like I should talk about this. The mascot name is "Zé Gotinha" (something like "Little Drop Joe"), and was created in 1986, for the public campaigns to vaccinate kids (some vaccines, like the polio, are oral, so that's why the "drop"). Of course a lot of brazilians knows about KKK, we have history lessons too. But when we are toddlers and meet Zé Gotinha, we are simply to young to do this association. And, if u look just to the oficial mascot, it doesn't look a lot like KKK. I mean, it's just a friendly drop. But those costumes are just awful, and even to us they look ridiculous. Oh, and if anyone is asking what is "SUS", it means "Sistema Único de Saúde" (think the best translation is something like "United Health System"). It's the national public health service, I believe it's like the NHS in UK.

Check your history, Brazil imported way more slaves than the US and banned slavery long after the US. Granted that doesn’t exactly mean they’d know the KKK that started in the US post civil war but a lot of confederate slave owners fled to Brazil to continue running a farm the way they knew how. Like the man from Germany said, I think they know enough to recognize it.

You're perfetcly right. We do not have KKK here and we certainly would never think of associating the "little drop" to those extremists.

TBH not many people are aware of the meaning of KKK, they laugh with " kkkkkkkk" and the KKK was exclusively in the US, we have neo Nazis but they are more concerned about LGBTQIA+
