If you’ve been around kids, you know that they don’t really understand the dangers of the “real” world very well. You try to school them about it, but they don’t really listen to you; it seems that no amount of “don’t touch that!” will work on them.

So they go on to touch something hot or prickly while you turn your back for a second and despite the tears afterwards, they learn a valuable lesson. These netizens have had similar realizations – sometimes in life-threatening situations – that they should not mess with some things.

If it's your anxiety talking, it's not your gut. You have to learn how to tell the difference. As someone who has struggled with anxiety a lot, it can be hard to tell which one it is that's talking, but after some time you'll be able to tell which is which

While intuition can be helpful (it's called 'thin-slicing' in psychology), it also runs on the same thing that runs your prejudice. Hence you get white women calling the cops on a black person for existing 'because i got a bad vibe' that bad vibe was racism, Becky. So while intuition can save you, PLEASE examine it before you harm someone else.

I firmly believe that intuition is just the part of your brain that's outside your conscious attention, figuring things out without being bogged down by language. It can work much faster when you're not trying to put words to your thoughts.

I want to a talk by Diana Lamplugh (and had the privilege of talking to her before it started). Her daughter Suzy, an estate agent went missing having arranged to show a house to a bogus buyer. Diana said that Suzy had had a gut feeling that something was something was “off” in the lead up to her her presumed death. She and her husband set up a charity in her daughter’s name promoting personal safety. Her key message was is something feels off, trust your gut and get out of there ASAP

Our intuition kept us alive for millennia. It has not eroded away since we as a species became urbanites. Trust your gut.

But some of my best stories / experiences started with ‘This feels like a bad idea, how bad could it be though?’. I recommend listening to your gut but every now and again do something that sails a bit too close to the wind but make sure you are doing it in a situation that’s well within your skill set, don’t go sailing in a gale if you don’t know your bow from your stern or climbing a mountain until you know how to properly read a map or tie a bowline. Sensible is good, walking the edge of what’s possible is fun.

Can be anyone of course. In the US I find it’s often bigger and/or lifted trucks. Obviously they have perfectly appropriate purposes that I wholly support. However, lots of folks seem to drive them more for image (inadequacy issues) than for real purpose. In my area the telltale signs of the latter users are what stickers they have on the window. The “take caution” trifecta are a Punisher sticker, Calvin and Hobbes “pissing sticker,” and a Gadsden flag. Results may vary…

Had an ex friend yell at me for being weak when a driver cut me off on a highway late at night. Apparently I should have gone after them and not been such a pushover. She subsequently on another occasion was accidentally cut off in peak hour traffic with her obnoxious boyfriend in the car. They chased the car, forced them to a stop, got out and broke the drivers windows trying to punch at them. The driver was a young Asian girl, wouldn't hurt a fly. Karma came and they ended up in jail and booked. On the day of the court case, they doubled down on the idiocy. Had a fight on their way to the court house, in the train station, were pulled apart and ended up with more assault charges. All over inflated egos. My view was always, why start something when I can pull back and have the other person out of my life in the seconds it takes me to hit the brakes and watch them dissappear ahead of me.

What do you consider an aggressive driver? While there are obviously drivers that go too fast, take unreasonable risks, etc, I also see a lot of drivers in the wrong lane, not signaling for lane changes, not maintaining the speed of those around them, just being oblivious to their surroundings, etc. Sometimes, "aggressive drivers" are a symptom, not the cause.

The worst one I've seen was a driver going in between the carpool lane and the fast lane, this was not a motorcycle. He was trying to go around every one since we were in standing traffic on the I5N. So this 4 door car almost crashed into 20 cars and you see ever other driver try to quickly inch to the other side. Luckily we saw him so even though I was in the middle lane I was able to move so the car on the left lane could safely go partially on my lane.

This Viral Thread Has People Pointing Out Things People Should Avoid Like The Plague (43 Answers) Chickens while there are chicks present.   My brother is a cruel little s**t who liked being mean to animals while we were kids. He liked hurting them for the feeling of power it gave him. So he hurt a lot of small wildlife, like frogs and garter snakes and mice. When that stopped being enough he decided to go after livestock.   We had chickens. There was a great big rooster and his ladies and all of them had chicks. My job was to take care of the chickens, feed, water them, collect eggs, ect.   My brother was bigger and stronger than me so one day he decided to have 'fun' and grabbed up one of the little chicks in the coop and squeezed it until it started to scream for help. My attempts to stop him did nothing.   Now the chickens were used to me picking up the chicks and petting them. So they weren't alarmed when my brother picked up the chick. When it screamed however, all hell broke loose.   All the chickens went after him, going for his face and eyes. The rooster had spurs on his legs over an inch long and he cut big grooves on my brother's face, missing his eyes by millimeters. They swarmed him and bullied him until he dropped the chick and ran out of the coop crying with blood on his face.   He was 10 at the time and should have known better. Did he stop being mean to animals? No. Did they punish him for it when they could? The animals sure did.   Chickens are very much like the cuccos in the Zelda games. If you hurt one they will all swarm you.   EDIT: I got several questions and I will detail them here so people doing have to go digging through comments.   Yes, my brother and I were both abused by our father. Our mother was a kindly women who did her best to nurture and discipline my brother. She died when I was 7 years old and my brother at 9 years old from cancer. My father went off the deep end and took out his rage on us both. He worked two shifts at a factory daily and did not want to be disturbed when home or he would beat us. So no, there was no adult supervision and we were left to our own devices except for a weekend here and there when our maternal grandmother would have us. She also did her best, but our father excused and enabled my brother's behavior because he was more valuable in his eyes compared to me, a sickly girl. We did go to school. Yes CPS was called a couple times and my father told everyone that I was pathological liar so nothing came of it.   My brother most likely had a genetic flaw or some inherited mental health disorder that kept my brother from feeling empathy. However, our father did not believe in mental health services so my brother never got therapy or help. I fully believe he would have turned out to be a different person if he had these services. Instead he was isolated, abused, and enabled. It made him entitled and gave him the need to exert his will over everyone. If he wanted something he simply took it, including my innocence.   He grew up into a terrible adult. No he didnt [end] anyone. I dont believe he would [end] anyone because he likes to manipulate people and you cant manipulate a dead person. He instead became a thief, a r****t, and fell hard into [illegal substance] use. The last time I spoke to him was in 2013. I have fully cut him off from my life and have not spoken to him since. Maybe he has changed in these ten years, but i have no way of knowing. Once in a while I scan obituaries looking for his name, but otherwise I have nothing to do with him.   I acknowledge that he had a messed up beginning like I did. However, he willfully chose to hurt me and has never apologized or acknowledged what he did to me, even as adults. I may have forgiven him if he had at least acknowledged what he did was wrong, but he believes he did nothing wrong. So for my health and safety, I chose to cut him out.   I have diagnosed C-PTSD that I will have for the rest of my life. However, I spent the last decade in therapy learning how to cope and live with what happened to me. Some days are better than others, but I am genuinely happy and am in a safe place, several states away and surrounded by my friends who have become my new loving family.   So yes I'm okay now. I dont fear him or my father coming after me because they are lazy cowards and I'm too strong now to allow them to hurt me. If any of them contact me about giving up a kidney or a liver lobe I will laugh in thier faces and then get a restraining order.

We regularly have hens with chicks (or sometimes ducklings, which were artificially bred and then adopted by a clucking hen. One time I went to refill their drinking trough, it scared one of the chicks, it cried AND THE MOTHER HEN RAN UP TO ME AND JUMPED IN MY DIRECTION, CLAWS FIRST, in best karate style. Jeeeez, never mess with hens! Even if it's accidentally

Stay away from gossip, brownnosers, and office politics. Be courteous, just don’t think any of your coworkers wouldn’t betray you—-s**t talk you, lie through their teeth, and stab you right smack dab in the back at the drop of a hat—-if it meant they would get the raise/promotion and you wouldn’t. Especially if they’re less qualified than you are, and even more so if you thought they were your friend and did more than talk about the weather. I had it done to me, by someone I thought was my friend, and the aftermath was miserable. She got the raise and promotion, and proceeded to make my life at work hell, because I knew so much about her. She figured she’d make me miserable and I’d quit, which would help keep her secrets. It didn’t, btw.

I 💯 agree with this. I worked for Delta Airlines from the mid 90's until 2001. I started out as a baggage handler for the first 6 months I worked for them. Then the TWU was trying to unionize ground workers and ticket agents. Delta created a new "HR Dept" that would act as a liason btwn employees and management to try and keep the Union out. I was offered the gig and liked, at the time, that they were being proactive using Union ideals without having TWU. God was it a learning experience. It was an absolute ruse. I was basically handcuffed to ALWAYS side with management even if the front line employee was totally right. I learned a valuable lesson. NEVER trust big corporations to do the right thing. Always go with the Union that will stand up for the little people.

This Viral Thread Has People Pointing Out Things People Should Avoid Like The Plague (43 Answers) Head injuries I had a single friend that got into a bar room scuffle. He got knocked down a hit his head on a tiled floor. Got back up and said that's it for tonight. He lived alone and that was on a Friday night. When he didn't show for work on Monday with a no call, that raised some eyebrows. When he didn't show on Tuesday, someone when out to his place and broke in after no answer. He was dead on the kitchen floor. Doctor guessed a brain bleed. I think about him every time I see a video of someone getting knocked out.

Also want to add that if you do not have a history of severe headaches and/or migraines, do not hesitate to seek medical attention if they last several days and cause extreme pain. This could be a sign of a more severe injury and, even if you didn't hit your head, you could have a medical issue. My friend had extremely painful headaches for several days and decided to go to the hospital (they were unbearable and worse than any migraine she ever had); the initial scan showed a mass. After follow-up scans they found she had a stage/grade 4 brain cancer (don't recall the exact type). It's been a year and a half and she is still fighting but because she didn't try to wait out the headaches and got help, she has a better chance. Not trying to scare anyone but you should never ever ignore head pain that lasts a few days.

This what annoys me about movies, people get hit on the head and then either pass out for a short while or just bleed a bit. Yes we know it is the 'movies' but with how often it happens in moves people become conditioned that they will be OK if it happens to them or they do it to someone else

If you get a sudden excruciating headache that feels like your head is going to explode, get yourself to the hospital. In my case it was acompanied by endless vomitting. Serious enough to wake a radiographer and do a scan in the middle of the night.

Many people who have experienced this type of headache describe it as a "thunderclap". Seek help *immediately*. Brain bleeds can very quickly result in total brain death.

My boyfriend had a stroke at the age of 35 from traumatic brain injuries. He's very lucky to be alive. It took him 7 years to learn to walk again, two months to remember who his family was, and he still suffers from non focal seizures. He will for the rest of his life. Traumatic brain injuries are a terrifying thing and I still worry about long-term effects and every time he has a bad seizure. (Edit: typo)

Oh sheet I actually have a story for this. So, I was like 10 and running on the blacktop (concrete basketball area) in Elementary. I was running away from targets in a game of Zombie Tag with another person, let’s call Bob. I’m behold Bob, and somehow I trip over Bob’s leg, go flying and get a concussion. Out of school and miserable for two weeks ish. Your skull is strong, but still be cautious, or else you’ll get to go to the ER for tripping

I found a hornet guy once in my garden, appeared out of some piece of wood... first thought was like..kill it, burn it, destroy it...but then my wildlife saving attitude spoke and I just grabbed a stick and tried to relocate this little beast somewhere very very far away...he was kind of cooperative and also... staring at me all the time and following my clumsy moves by being also clumsy in stepping on the fckin stick and.. staring at me all the way...even when he was departed from the stick very very far away he just.. stared at me... I checked the web and found out that hornet males often just stare at you

That night it swelled up and was very painful. I went to A&E thinking they may wash it and give me antibiotics. No, within 10 minutes I had a canular in my arm and was admitted. A few hours later emergency surgery, IV antibiotics and 3 days in hospital. I had the early stages of sepsis with red lines running down my arm. I could have lost my hand or worse. I doesn't help that I have T2 diabetes. I always take care of little cuts etc now.

In some ways, small wounds are almost worse then those where blood are gushing out. Blood flowing out of the wound will rinse it to at least some degree, and that means it's more important to stop the bleeding and getting som sterile compresses on rather then washing it (in the first place, obviously you need to clean it later).

And cows are strong. Really strong. I have seen a cow simply pick apart a wall made out of solid 2 inch timber for no other reason then she wanted to be on the other side. Oh. Mum and dad had a bunch of cows that lowed to play catch with me and my wifes Jack Russel terrier. Dog and cows took turns to hunt each other around the field. They really had a blast together whenever we came to visit.

My farm has a field of cows, every 3 or so weeks I would herd them to another pasture (cause grass needs to replenish itself) and there’s always one cow that would refuse to move with the herd and would require a lasso to be used to catch and lead. The same cow stole my lasso four times. It was either I let the lasso go or I let Minnie take me for a water skiing on mud session No I never got the lassos back

Similarly with horses, in my state there are large signs posted in public equine areas warning that the owners are not liable for injuries - they are pretty but they are big dumb nervous animals that will knock you down or kick you when startled.

Any large animal you don't know. We raised dairy and beef. I have stood in the middle of dozens of them. A few times used my palms on two nearby backs to lift myself up. But I was rarely in any real danger because our cows were super chill. Even our bull was super chill. I slept with him for a week in a fair stall one year. BUT --- my cow is really tame does not mean YOUR cow is really tame so you don't assume. If they DO go after you they are stronger / faster / heavier than you think. A peaceful example of this is one cow we had that liked head scritches. If you had your back to her she would sometimes stick the crown of her head under your butt cheeks and raise up. To her I think just playful rubbing her head on you but it would lift you up into the air with apparently no effort on her part. Anyway - same goes for other large animals like horses.

They really can be so dangerous. My dad did restoration and construction on houses. He was on a 10-15 foot (3-4.6m) ladder outside and got hit with vertigo (newly developed issue at that time); ended up falling off from it. Fortunately his fall was "cushioned" by the partially filled dumpster next to it and he only suffered some cuts and bruises, a few broken ribs and a mild concussion. He was damn lucky that he just barely missed slamming the edge of the dumpster and fell straight in.

3 points of contact at all times. No, the very top of a folding ladder is not a step. You should always have someone brace the bottom of a straight/extension ladder. Never reach/lean sideways. No, you are not Superman, the Man of Steel. You are a mushy bag of sticks that will go thud and break.

The worst part is they get more dangerous as you get older. A friends dad (80ish) fell off one while cleaning his caravan. What would have been painful for my friend, or completely ignored by his kids was pretty major for his Dad. It only takes something like a three foot fall to break bones :(

Garage springs are doable if you think ahead because they can be brought to an energy empty state. Car suspension springs are always under stress and therefore far more dangerous.

My son has always been a very gentle soul. He doesn't stifle his emotions, is not ashamed of them. He's just very gentle and very slow to anger. But on the rare occasion he does get angry, watch out! It's almost always anger in defense of some injustice to a loved one. He will roar and slam something (not towards anyone!) and he can yell so loudly and deeply I'm sure they will hear in Canada.

I got Lyme about 3 years ago. The random symptom that Lyme gives was my digestive process completely stopped. My body forgot how to produce digestive enzymes so food would sit in my stomach and spoil until i threw it up. I didn't eat normal food for over a year and yakked well over a dozen times a day. Thank Jeebus for human trial medications and synthetic stomach enzymes.

You will almost never feel them on you. And word of caution, you need at the least permethrin to deter them but that can only be sprayed on clothes. That said, they can hold their breath and move to an untreated area and get to your skin. Even if it dies from the exposure to the chemical they still can have plenty of time to feed beforehand. You really need to stay vigilant and do several checks after being in an area with them. And you need to check EVERYWHERE! And never burn them off ever; that poses a higher risk of them basically vomiting their innards into you and a higherchance of getting disease. Best is to lightly scrape away with like a credit-card; even tweezers run the risk of decapitation and be a pain to remove the head but again risk of them vomiting (not really the right term but you get the point)

I went kayaking down the Delaware River a couple times this summer with friends. We saved a guy that got tipped off his canoe and of course had taken his life vest off. He thought his kid was in the water too (also with no life vest). 1/3 of the way into our 16 mile trip and we go into rescue mode. My arms burned from paddling around the current we thought this kid might still be in. Guy was under water for awhile but once he threw up all the water and got breathing right he was OK. They took him ot get checked out and 5 minutes later we hear whistling through the woods. It was the rest of the family and they had the child!!! All turned out OK but the river did not look particularly crazy and the rapids they went over were not even class 1 really but once u get under water that current will keep u there! That's why life jackets save your life, it keeps u at the surface or at least will orient you to get there if it's deep.

Former raft guide here. Do not underestimate even the smallest rivers! I know of plenty sad examples where people drowned in barely deeper than knee deep water. It just takes a bit of current and an immovable object like a fallen tree or rock to get pressed onto or under. Or a tiny bit of back current beneath such a small waterfall that would be sooo fun to jump off...

I whitewater rafted just once and we had one level IV and we flipped. I was caught under the raft and followed the guide’s advice to just keep your body flat and until the raft is no longer over you. That was pretty scary and was hard to keep from panicking, but I just did what he said and it worked out fortunately.

When caught in a strong current or riptide don’t swim straight towards shore as it will tire you out, swim diagonally towards shore. It doesn’t matter where you get to shore as long as you get there.

This Viral Thread Has People Pointing Out Things People Should Avoid Like The Plague (43 Answers) Being careless in the shower.   A few years ago, I was showering and I forgot the new bottle of conditioner sitting in the counter. I slipped on some shampoo residue in a rush to get out of the shower (because no likey cold air). I slammed my ribs against the porcelain tub. Completely knocked the wind out of me, but I somehow managed to crawl out of the shower and bathroom to make it to my phone, genuinely thinking I would have to call an ambulance to take my naked a*s to the hospital.   Thankfully that wasn’t necessary as I laid down and caught my breath, but I had pretty bad rib pain for at least a month after (and only a TINY bruise to show for it!). After that experience I could absolutely see how falling in the shower can [end] a person.   Anyway, now I don’t rush when exiting the shower and I always bring my phone in the bathroom because that naked, wet crawl on the floor to retrieve it was humiliating and I’d rather not go through it again.

That bathroom porcelain is so very hard. I slipped just a few months ago and landed with my shoulder on the edge of the toilet bowl. Did no damage to the toilet but shattered and dislocated my shoulder, Had to have the shoulder replaced. A week after the replacement was done, I fell down my stairs landing on the ceramic floor and dislocating the shoulder again. , Ended up as a total of three surgeries to make it right, today I'm still in a sling and doing rehab. Rough getting old(er) I'm 66. So be careful folks.

Grab bars. Non-slip shower mats are no guarantee. I had my bathroom redone last year and they replaced the tub. The new tub was ridiculously slippery, I felt like a drunk on ice skates every time I got in there. Tried a non-slip (suction cup) shower mat and it actually slid along the bathtub. The suction cups held suction but it was so slick it slid like a woolen runner on a polished floor. Fixed it by scrubbing the hell out of the tub a couple times (theory was it was coated in a chemical that made it look nice and shiny, and also slippery). Oh and yeah grab bars, properly fixed ones are a life saver if your balance isn't great or the bathtub is actively trying to kill you.

This Viral Thread Has People Pointing Out Things People Should Avoid Like The Plague (43 Answers) Drowsy driving ETA: Back in 2015, I had an incident where I fell asleep behind the wheel. It was in mid-August, and I had fallen asleep on my way home from work after a 16 hour night shift because my job messed up the schedule (we couldn’t work more than 12 in a single shift). All I remember is I was driving, then I was waking up in a hospital 4 hours away from home. No clue where I was or what happened. I had suffered a major TBI and have been mentally different ever since. Had a pretty major concussion following the accident. It happened in the backroads of southern Idaho, and I was lucky to have come out of it with 0 broken bones. Everyone at the hospital was saying I was lucky to have survived. There were witnesses who saw the whole wreck, a couple high schoolers on their lunch. I read the police report and witness statements, and according to them, my car rolled 6.5 times, ended wheels up and I was partially ejected (laying half in and half out of the car through the window) my seatbelt buckle had broken as the car was coming to rest.

I learned this lesson the hard way when I was 17 but I got off pretty easy since I just lost my car and not my life. Fell asleep driving to milk cows a about 4:30 in the morning. Totaled my 'hot' / 'cool' car which made me very sad but I only got a very small scratch on my cheek. The good part of the story is ever since that day I pay a lot of attention to the signs of me getting more tired than I think I am and I'll pull over in a rest stop and sleep. Or a few times just some city side street if I knew I needed to stop driving and there was no rest stop. This is long trips obviously, I'm fine with local driving. YMMV but one big red flag for me is if I get any hallucinations. Not "LSD dreams". I mean boring eyes playing tricks like I'm driving the freeway and see an overpass, but then I get closer and realize the overpass was just a shadow and there is no overpass. Also the obvious one of if you just notice you are wanting to go to sleep.

I fell asleep driving on the highway, while driving to take my SAT test when I was in high school. Luckily I woke up when my tires hit the rumble strip as the car veered onto the shoulder and I didn't crash. I got off at the next exit and drank coffee and energy drinks before going the last few miles to the test location, and the adrenaline/caffeine combo got me through the exam. I got lucky I didn't kill anyone.

And to think they force semi drivers to drive tired.... I've seen it y'all, John Oliver did a deep dive on it. Knew a person who got in a six car accident bc of it. F#ckin terrifying. I stay *far* away from them now. Those poor drivers.

Same thing happened to me. I was driging back to college 2.5 from home and it was the week before finals. There's stretch of boring drive 1.5 hrs in. I had been up late studying past 3 days. I nodded off & next thing I know I've flipped my jeep 3 times into an open field. I remember thinking during the 1st flip 'drunk ppl don't die in accidents bc they don't tense uo' - so I let the jeep take me for the scariest 15-30 seconds of my life. I walked away totally uninsured. Still went to hospital to verify no concussion but I will never drive drousy again

Something similar happened to my colleague. He tried driving to his hometown to see his parents who lived 8 hours away after a 12 hour shift. Fell asleep and crashed against the divider. Its a miracle he is alive. Has a deep scar running across his cheek to mouth

Well done for wearing your seatbelt xxxxxxIt was the only thing that saved me and my sister when an 8 wheeled juganaut slammed into us at 40 when we were stopped at a red light. It shunted the car across a crossing and more. I'm just SO glad my other sister slept in that day. We had no back seat or boot left. So grateful ❤️

Had a nurse total her car. Asked her how, and she very nonchalantly told me she fell asleep at the wheel. Like it was a normal thing. Checked off another reason not to continue to work healthcare shift work.

A cat attacked my foot (long story, not relevant now), went in with claws and teeth, but because I had a cat myself, the doctor’s assistant wouldn’t take my phone call seriously. I went to the clinic anyway and ended up with three stitches, tetanus shot, and antibiotics. I now have two impressive scars, but luckily still have my foot. Screw that lady who thought she could triage me over the phone.

A guy in I think it was the UK recently got bit by a feral, almost killed him and they discovered a bacteria that was unknown to science. Feral cats get into a lot of craziness, if you don't know the cat don't touch them, seems simple enough.

My great aunt died from a cat scratch attack. She had a habit of shooing a local stray away with a broom and we suspect she was not too kind when doing so. The final time the cat really let her have it and being somewhat frail, older and not going to the hospital sooner resulted in her not having the wounds cleaned thoroughly enough or in time to keep the infection from spreading. It killed her.

This thread reads like a list of things I have done and got away with. (that's not a flex - more like the universe was lenient with me or whatever). I've been bitten by cats, dogs, horses, mice, rats, a parrot, one time an ostrich, snakes (non-venomous) and several others and just shook it off and went on. Which is not a macho brag. More like many of those things happened when I didn't understand how serious they could potentially be.

IT problems are notorious for being hard to trace, so a little change can trigger unforseen cosequences that may take ages to fix. If that happens on any other day: messy, but you'd have to work tomorrow anyway. On a Friday it may be "No-one leaves before the all clear!" and you can kiss your weekend plans goodbye. (At least in some places)

I distinctly remember walking on the beach in Florida when I was 9 or 10. The water was shallow, up to my knees, maybe a bit more. Suddenly I was unable to return to shore and was being pulled out further. Fortunately my parents were able to reach me and pull me out of the water. The sheer power of water, of nature is astounding.

This is rather sad. Due caution - sure. But "avoid like the plague' (thread subject) is sad. So much joy and fun in bodies of water. I have so many good memories. Swimming, skiiing, crabbing, body surfing, just goofing in the waves, snorkeling in super clear waters off Hawaii and the Philippines. Riding boats on top of the water. My life would be less happy without bodies of water.

Be educated, be respectful, expand your experiences of what it can do but enjoy being around bodies of water. I’m with you on this one, I’ve had pretty much all of my most enjoyable times on, in, under and next to lakes, rivers and the sea. Life is just better with lots of water based fun in it. We need that connection to it. Some folk just can’t be bothered to learn their own limitations or how to be safe, they get what’s coming to them, sad but true!

This Viral Thread Has People Pointing Out Things People Should Avoid Like The Plague (43 Answers) Heights. I fell out of a tree when I was a kid and nearly severed my leg. A branch ripped it wide open and to the bone, I had fat and muscle falling out, and I very nearly bled to death. It took hours of surgery and months spent mostly in bed before I was able to really use that leg again. It's been more than twenty-five years since then and the scar is still massive (half an inch wide and wraps all the way around my inner thigh). That fall was only three feet. #1 reason for why I frequently tell people to never underestimate a fall, even a short one. It only takes one accident to completely f**k you up and potentially [end] you, so caution is important.

I fell from a tree multiple times as a kid. Scariest was when I was higher than 6 feet on a cherry tree, picking cherries. I fell and it seemed like forever, time stopped... I landed on a branch and it broke on impact. But it slowed me enough, so I landed without breaking anything. It was a really big branch, I used it climbing up and I heavy as a small 6yo, one of the smallest from my class. I never climbed this high again.

I love heights and used to climb to the top of whatever. Cliffs, farm silos, tall trees. Somehow I managed to never have any serious falls. Though one time I fell about 10 feet from a tree onto a barb wire fence and that hurt like heck. These days I try to enjoy my heights safely. Like maybe a roller coaster where you are high up but it is relatively safe. Or a hike where you have a great view but you are not really on the edge or anything.

For me it is a couple of broken fingers when I was about 8 and a sprained ankle from falling off a horse when I was 15. Neither one too serious at the time (I had a cast for the hand) and long since healed and forgotten. But these days (in my 60s) from time to time those joints hurt worse than the others. And the ankle sometimes rolls out under me. Kind of 'gives out' unexpectedly. Not often but annoying when it does.

Please brush twice a day and floss, it really does make a difference :( I can’t even smile in photos or laugh with friends anymore. I’m hoping to get it taken care of soon but dental is so expensive. Nothing worked until we tried this Fela & Bedbug spray made by Bayer. Somehow, THAT did the trick. Repeated applications every week for about a month and the life cycle was done. If you have been staying somewhere away from home and suspect bedbugs, take these precautions to prevent infesting your house/apartment. Change *all* of your clothing, shoes, etc. before entering the house. Throw away anything that you can. For items that you can't bear to lose, double bag them and put them in the freezer for at least a week, preferably two.

Swim to the side. Rips aren't very wide; a few feet to the right or left, and you're out of it. Yes, it really is that easy.

One thing to remember is that the wave is twice the height of the face. A 6 foot face is a 12 foot wave. That can suck you all around, and, wave power can be deceptive. I've surfed 8 foot faces where the power really wasn't bad (but, it'll still pound you if you don't duck dive), and 3 foot faces which had lots of power behind them. Treat the ocean with respect

I probably dodged a bullet on this one. Body surfing in Hawaii many years ago. "Fell off" the crest of about a 12 foot wave. Got slammed into the ocean floor hard enough to knock the wind out of me and make me wonder if my back was damaged. Then it rag dolled me a few times underwater in the curl motion before trying to drag me back out as I was trying to crawl onto the beach. I was okay after laying in the sand for a couple of minutes but it made me stop and think. I mean, it was awesome and fun and I went back out and rode more waves - but the sea is pretty powerful even in small doses on a nice day.

And even if you are on the beach, never turn your back to the waves. I was on a beach near San Francisco and was watching three women getting their picture taken with the surf as a backdrop. A bunch of us started to yell at them to stop, but they were horsing around and just laughed. It only took one larger-than-usual wave to knock them off their feet... and that was the last anyone saw of them. All three drowned, and only one body was eventually recovered.

Once, when I was aboit 6 or 8 years old, I was at the beach with my grandma and her husband. Me and the husband decided to sit in the water and avoid getting bitten by the ladybugs (it was a dry Summer) so we went. It was shallow waters (we sat down and the water went to my upper stumach or so) and then there was a wave (1 wave) that completely tumbled us over! Like.... I was certain I would drown right there and I fought against the water to re-surface. I cried so much after that and we all went straight home. I was so shocked! And this was shallow water. I cannot imagine what it could have felt like in deeper water. 😳

And you can google pictures of sharks, dolphins and seals in the surf line...in our area we have a great white shark nursery. The babies start at 5 feet in length btw.

I used to surf kayak in my yoof. Every now and again we’d surf at a place called Hell’s Mouth in North Wales. One day it was just too rough and the waves were big but a bit rubbish for our boats so we elected to do a bit of swim rescue practice, kept our buoyancy aids and helmets on and left the boats onshore. We were diving through waves and testing what our BAs would do, how we’d recover from being inside big waves and it was a humbling experience, the power inside the waves was awesome, if you get yourself lying sideways in a wave it’ll happily roll you along and drown you if you don’t have a strategy and an effective method for getting yourself out. Mother Nature has no feelings, not a care in the world about you and she’s a tough taskmaster, you won’t beat her, sometimes she’ll let you play but don’t think it’s on your terms. Be prepared, be ready to walk away and know that the sea will be there tomorrow and the day after……

There's a waterfall near where I live where people die every few years trying to wade across. There's signs everywhere saying "___ # of people have died on these falls. Rocks are covered in algae and slippery. Do not attempt to cross the falls, you will slip, fall, and die." But every couple years, someone else slips on the damn rocks and falls hundreds of feet to their death.

This Viral Thread Has People Pointing Out Things People Should Avoid Like The Plague (43 Answers) Precipitation when it is cold outside. I got caught in a snowstorm in Shenandoah National Park in March, 2019. It was 50 in the valley, but I got 2 feet of snow on the top of the ridge. The forecast did not call for any precipitation that day. I was hiking on the Appalachian Trail and thought that a few flurries were nothing to worry about. I left a lean-to shelter that would have kept me dry and protected from the wind. I hiked less than 6 miles and was struggling to move forward because the snow was so deep. I was soaked to the bone, freezing cold, and beginning to lose fine muscle control in my fingers. The trail followed the side of a ridge and was not providing me any flat spaces to set up a tent. I eventually found a clearing where some power lines crossed the trail and struggled to get my tent erected despite the loss of feeling in my fingers. Once my tent was set up, I got my sleeping pad and sleeping bag deployed, got out of my wet clothes and crawled into the bag for an hour to warm up. I didn't even have a cell signal where I could let someone know my exact location and that I was ok. I had been in contact the previous evening, so my girlfriend knew my location to within a couple of miles. The snowstorm lasted all night and I had to spend a full 24 hours in the tent before the snow stopped. The next day after the snow stopped, I packed up my camp and kept hiking through the 2 feet of snow. The trail crossed Skyline Drive after a short distance and I followed that road for ~9 miles to the nearest park entrance. I called a shuttle and spent the night in Waynesboro, VA at a hiker hostel. The warm shower, boot dryer, and warm food were exquisite. When you make an error in judgement in the wilderness, the goal is to survive long enough to learn from your mistake. I learned my lesson. I will not screw around when dealing with precipitation and cold weather. If there is any doubt, I will just hunker down and wait for the wet weather to pass.

To those who are blessed with nary an allergy, I recommend an amazing show called Cells At Work. Episode 6 (I believe) is Cedar Allergy and it's one of the best fictional depictions of what happens inside a body during an allergy attack. It's amazing how your body overreacting to a benign substance can mess you up so fully. Also, be aware - you can develop an allergy to anything at any time. As a kid, just pollen allergies. Now, as an adult, if it doesn't swim or slither, I can't have it as a pet (dude, I just want a cat!!).

THE FOLLOWING IS IN NO WAY RECOMMENDED. It was High school vo-tech class, basic electronics and electricity in1984. Buddies and I used to take turns holding the output on a power supply (a/c and d/c voltage types). To see who could hold on the longest. It was always me. I fully believe that doing this saved my life about 25 years later I was repairing a rail road crossing electrical short and someone re-energized the circuit and I picked up a wire to rehang it on the pole and I touched a grounded cabinet. I was frozen in place for what seemed like forever (in reality about 60 seconds-ish) unable to move. I eventually was able to break free (using every amount of physical force I was able to muster). As my friend watched In horror scared to touch me. I walked away without a scratch. I’m not sure that would have been the case without that “conditioning” I had in high school electricity class.

40 years ago, 3 men were hanging metal gutters. As they were passing them up, the gutter hit some high voltage lines hidden in an overgrown tree. First man, my Father ended up with severe burns and short term memory issues. Second man, swallowed the nails that he had held in his mouth and fell from the ladder. When he hit the ground, his heart restarted but with an unsteady rhythm. He, too, had severe burns. Third man got the worst of it. Besides, the burns, he lost his long term memory and had the intelligence of a small child. He couldn't remember his wife and young children. He died a few years later due to recurring health conditions. The high voltage lines did have a warning sign posted. It was nailed to the overgrown tree and completely rusted.

Even a shock from the 12 volt car circuit can kill you. It is a low voltage but extremely high current for a human to get hit with. They have to be high current to start the engine. It is called cranking amps.

After this then you could potentially receive calls but you will use that case# in regards to the issue. INITIAL CONTACT BY PHONE, TEXT OR EMAIL IS A SCAM! Payments will never be by anything other than check, money order or certified bank check and it will be made out to The U.S. Treasury. They may do online stuff but you will go to IRS.gov to do anything and nowhere else unless the site redirects you. The sites will always be .gov

Although I thoroughly dislike dealing with the federal government, whenever I do I try to comply the best I can when filling out forms, etc. Luckily (knock on wood and praise the gods) it's always worked out. Whenever I've dealt with federal employees personally, either face-to-face or over the phone, they've always been professional.

I once had to deal with the IRS and the experience was so completely and utterly horrible I broke down in tears. All over getting some stupid form filled out! One goddamn form and they made it so impossible I had a nervous breakdown at the kitchen table. NEVER AGAIN.

Okay, unless you are a total dirtbag that has made a career out of cheating on your taxes, the IRS is just another bureaucracy that is driven by rules and regulations. If you ever have trouble with the IRS, contact your Congressperson (House, not Senate). They have an office of constituent services, and most of them love to be able to get up and give a floor speech about how they saved one of their constituents from the horrible IRS. This really does work. I had a ridiculous problem with the IRS many years ago where they lost my file and would not recognize that I had paid my taxes in full. After suffering through that for over 7 months, my Congressman's office fixed it in 6 weeks. And the IRS refunded me a big check, because I had actually overpaid.

Once when I was broke, I cashed in a retirement account so I ended up owing taxes at the end of the year. The IRS was actually very reasonable. I just had to make a small payment every month and the next year they just kept part of my refund. I think most people have trouble with the IRS because they ignore the issue or don't respond when they get things in the mail.

The first letter from the IRS is automatic (not human generated); you can work with a human when you call - often the letter can be wrong.

Sleeping bag. Cardboard box, a few times on just the butt/pajamas if it was the right stairs. I don't think I ever went head first but a few times I ended up at the bottom a lot faster than I planned. I believe cardboard on carpet was one of those times.

for those of you who dont know. Cauliflower ear is commonly seen in fighters and wrestlers. The swelling in the ear is due to injury which causes the blood flow in the cartilage to cease and swell in that location. It becomes permanent in 10 days. If you see someone with cauliflower ear, they likely take blows to the head on regular occassion and will definitely have no issue giving you your own cauliflower ear

You can convert microwaves into mini plasma reactors. The magnetron inside is super dangerous and many models can even poison you if you happen to breathe in a little dust from the casing. They're surprisingly dangerous devices.

Apparently all it takes to generate plasma in a microwave is to microwave a grape with a small cut on it. Not sure if it's actually plasma but it creates more of a spark than you might expect.
