While you wouldn’t be wrong to say that places like TikTok and Reddit provide quite a bit (absolute understatement) of stuff to consume, you’d probably be surprised how much equally entertaining stuff is out there on places like Zillow.

Because this is the internet and everything by default is a thing, real estate listings that have an it factor are by definition on the table just like anything else you’d find anywhere else. Weird, funny, flashy, excessive, randomly generated—you name it, it’s probably out there. And also in this list now.

This is absolutely gorgeous and shockingly lower priced, considering the condition and location of the house, current real estate market.

Me thinks if this price is right the back off it must have caved in totally. With housing prices everywhere this can't be right or something is tremendously wrong with it.

Houses come in all shapes and sizes. And saying all is likely not too far off from being accurate. Mathematically speaking, there are an estimated 2.3 billion houses on this planet. There’s bound to be at least that many different shapes and sizes of them. At the very least, there’s quite a bit of variety. Let’s leave it at that.

Query here... What makes a property in the US a 'Victorian'? In the UK, Victorian properties are those built during Queen Victoria's reign. The US don't have sovereign eras the way we do, so how can they name their properties in that way? 🤔

In North America, "Victorian" is used to describe the style and aesthetic of the home. Lots of embellishment on the exterior, towers, wraparound porches, gingerbread wainscoting. Inside, they tend to be equally ornate with high ceilings, fancy crown molding, winding staircases, etc.

The interior has a lot of fifties stuff, but also a lot of sixties, seventies, and eighties stuff too. But the house itself is at least turn of the last century, like circa 1900, give or take.

And it’s not just the number that’s baffling, but also the variety of houses. While everyone agrees on what a house is in essence, every house is still a result of a number of factors, ranging from taste to function to practicality, all falling somewhere on the spectrum of subjective to objective… the possibilities for house manifestations are endless at this point.

It's rather sad that the man cave feels more welcoming and livable than the main house. Then again, if the house showed any sort of personality, potential buyers would come in and whine that "Ooh, I don't like the wall color!" Because that's the most important thing to look at when buying a house. 🙄😮‍💨

If this was built in my area there would need to be a tank under the former pool where rain water could drain into, and then be pumped away. If you didn't, you'd truly have a 'pool house'.

So, in NC they have a tendency to build dams in places that will flood entire towns. There are multiple man made lakes in my area that have entire towns below water (as an aside, I’ve always wished I had the ability to scuba and see these underwater towns in person but my asthma and anxiety over swimming in anything but a pool prevents this). I see this pool turned bar and all I can think is, why couldn’t you have both?

Houses can be unorthodox for a number of reasons. With older ones, it’s a historical legacy that might define what it is. Like this one house in Missouri looks like any other ordinary house, save for the fact that it has a very functional jail in it. Apparently, back in the late 1800s, the house was built for the town sheriff and thus was equipped with 9 cells, just like firefighters would live in fire stations.

It's so weird for me to see a decommissioned church. In my country, if they build a church, the church is here to STAY. For millennia if necessary. If it gets destroyed, a new one will be built on top of it. You can't get rid of them once they pop out.

Some houses are actually castles. Yep, this family-sized castle, dubbed the Helmer castle after violinist Max Helmer, in Michigan was listed for sale and sold for a bit over $500,000 back in 2021. Sure, you might not necessarily be a king or queen (or are you?!) but you can still enjoy a bit of medieval luxury.

OK, so, historical legacy and maybe having too much money aside, there’s always the reason of taste. Considering there are over 8 billion people out there, each would have something that they’d want in a home. Again, taste doesn’t really explain why there’s amusement park equipment inside your house, but I guess you can’t argue on matters of taste.

If it’s sturdy enough, and I’m allowed to hook it to an actual train, it would be the perfect house for my retirement. I get to be at home, totally self sufficient, AND travel at the same time!

Yet, other homes are built to serve a particular function. This does overlap with the idea of having a literal jail inside your basement area, but it’s in general an idea of a house being useful as more than just a home. A portion of your house can be dedicated to a venture (a bakery or store front) or even be designed to be rented as a film set or studio. In fact, there’s an entire profession dedicated to scoping these places out.

"Per the description, The house was completely decorated for Jack Stephan, also known as "Plumber to the Stars", lived here with his wife from 1969 until 2014, when he died at the age of 96. He was quite a fixture here in the desert while living in this fabulously decorated home, which was the epitome of chic luxury back in the day. Mr. Stephan was also known for his flashy wardrobe, and he took great pride in decorating his abode in his favorite color (red!). Not only was Mr. Stephan the go-to plumber for the who's who of Palm Springs, but he was also incredibly social and known for the numerous parties and card nights he hosted at this house, which was made for entertaining!" -- Zillow Gone Wild

I could be wrong, but $1.85 million seems really low for a well-mantained (if eye-wateringly decorated) mid century modern in Palm Springs, CA. I would've imagined the price tag to be more in the $5 mil range.

Whatever the case is, if you boil it down to the bare bones of the definition, you can practically say a house is just a place to keep your stuff. Well said, George Carlin.

So, that is ultimately the function of a house—to keep your stuff. It doesn’t have to be anything more than that, and that is fine.

    I've got space for 10 cars. That's a collection.

And speaking of stuff, there are a number of recommendations for things to have around the house—like, absolute musts. So, you can get by with essentially under roughly 100 things at your house, including furniture, appliances, tech, tools, and other conveniences. And while you can minimize it by skipping some accessories, emergency-related things like alarms might be mandated by law, so keep an eye on that.

I'd take it if there was lots of land around it, friends, here's where build little buildings and voila instant Renaissance Faire! 🤴👸🗡️

I like it. Change out the front door for a round one painted green and a brass knób in the exact middle.... Hobbit hole!

So not only do you not get a driveway, the patch of concrete goes to the front of the house, not even the garage

What is with the people who like the Flintstones look? It's so ugly and uninviting.

OK I'll bite, what is the "one thing"? I do see several things that the house doesn't need though.

Pipe organ? Carved wooden sink? Fenced off indoor area with missing gate? special pink wallpaper which looks like it has women possibly dancing on it? Sorry, I was listing the things it doesn’t need. The ‘one thing’ is called an interior designer maybe?

I've seen this before on I think on one of those home improvement shows. It has like 15 bedrooms in it...in the most odd locations. It was suggested it was a brothel, but nothing was confirmed. The bathrooms were really weird too.

Well it is a BOAT house, and made of wood. Wood boats need a lot of maintenance. Though at that point just get a damned boat

If you're going to build in a place where a storm is going to wash your house out to sea I guess this is a pretty good design.

Look. I said I’d be ok living on a houseboat. But I totally meant it would be in the water and deep water safe. How am I supposed to visit Caribbean islands in a house on stilts?

Yes. They are doing that all around Dane County in WI. They do nothing with the house and try to sell it for 4 or 5 times that a year later

its... sad... you can see where it looks homey and loved... but at the same time there's a soft sadness for the children that lived there, i would be able to tell that even without knowing it was Britney Spears
