50 Examples Of Innovative And Awesome Design Collected By The “Design Therapy” Instagram Account
The debate on whether a design is good or bad is a never-ending one. From terrible public space "solutions" to ideas so bad, it’s hard to believe someone came up with them, we've covered plenty of the latter over the years. So how about we balance out the scales a little bit?
There’s nothing more satisfying than stumbling upon designs that are so visually pleasing, it's almost healing. Here’s where the Instagram account called Design Therapy comes in. It is dedicated entirely to exploring innovation in design, from architecture and interior to furniture and product.
Some of these ideas can be observed in real life, others exist only as a sketch on paper. However, they prove that being a designer can sometimes feel a lot like being a therapist. Bored Panda combed through this treasure trove of inspiration, handpicked some of the best examples, and put them all in one place for you to enjoy. So continue scrolling and share your thoughts with us in the comments!

Jiang Taigong Tea Bag Holders
If you have a 3d printer (or know someone who does) there is an extremely cute dragon tea bag holder there, even with a moving Head, on Thingiverse!
Load More Replies...China, 1050 bce: Elder (taigong) Jiang sat by a river fishing, but with his hook out of the water. Ji Fa, leader of the Chou/Zhou came by and asked, What are you doing? Jiang Taigong answered, Only the willing get hooked. To make a long story short, together they overthrew the brutal Shang and established the Chou dynasty.
What an awesome story! Will look up on the internet for more details!

Milk Packaging By Depot_wpf
I've got a rare one that isn't. She's a calico descended from farm cats, so that may be why.
Load More Replies...If there’s one thing we know for certain, no one was born a designer. That's why sometimes people need a bit of help to become better in this field. We're talking about the little reminders and daily inspirations like the ones you see in this list to keep those creative ideas flowing. With 236K followers and counting, the Design Therapy online project collects pictures from all over Instagram to show off the charming side of design. From aesthetic buildings and clever packaging to mesmerizing furniture and unique sculptures, it has something for every taste.
Design Therapy is a new startup based in Istambul, Turkey. The founders of this project aim to explore "the innovative designs across the cosmos in the fields of product, interior, architecture, and technology." Many things make the world go round, but new creations drive it forward, and that’s why so many people keep on looking for solutions to both simple and complicated issues to improve our quality of life.

This is brilliant, but how do you turn down the top without it ripping?
Bernie Sanders Crochetlove By Tobeytimecrochet
Hey look the mittens are crochet just like the real ones. Don’t you just love the attention to detail?
Just a bit off topic, but Bernie and Larry David, who often impersonates Bernie, were on the PBS show Finding Your Roots, they discovered that they were cousins. Both were quite pleased.
But this begs the question, what does innovation in design really mean? Phil McKinney, author of Beyond the Obvious, a book on innovation and creativity, explained that it "is the utilization of a designer’s methods and sensibility to address the needs of the consumer. … Basically, the goal is to solve more complex problems with the methodology of a designer."
The tricky part is that many people miss what design actually is. "The biggest misconception is that design is simply what a product or service looks like. In actuality, design is how (and why) the product or service functions. It is the process of taking an idea and making it tangible and useful," McKinney wrote.
Hand-Tufted Rug Designed By Vanessa Barragao Vanessabarragao_work

At least that rug looks soft enough to land face first
Load More Replies...within 10 minutes of putting this in my house, my cat would hack a hairball on it.
Extremely beautiful piece of art. Of course, no one could really have it in their house, there would be goldfish crackers all up in there, and my dog would think the outdoors are in, and relieve himself all over it!
Given the assumed price tag and the space needed to display it, people who buy it are probably able to pay someone to specifically take care of that rug...

It's not real. I just looked to see how much it was to rent! This rendering, which Charlotte Taylor created in collaboration with Riccardo Fornoni of Cream Atelier, depicts a fictional oceanside home called Villa Saraceni that seems to be carved out of chalky white stone. With coronavirus confining people to their homes and rising fears over environmental destruction, a new breed of visual artists is creating utopian landscapes, buildings and interiors for armchair escapists. Renderings depicting ethereal seaside homes to surreal, pastel-hued dreamscapes have become popular in recent months as people in lockdown seek to be transported beyond their own four walls. https://www.dezeen.com/2020/07/10/dreamy-renderings-design-3d-artists/ Think positive and positive things will happen. :)
Looks like a beautiful painting of an old Greek myth or something. So pretty!
Omg I need to live here, I'd get absolutely nothing done, but I need to live here, there - in that pool.
I would happily live there. I would be such a happier person if I could wake up to this.
A tad TOO close to the mighty ocean for my liking but I know my daughter & a friend who would be in their heaven here.
Spectrums Of Light Thread Installations By Gabrieldawe
This is an art museum in DC! I saw that installation a few years ago. It's 10x more beautiful in real life!
Where ? I tried looking it up, but couldn't find it .
Load More Replies...You can find his installation here in Crystal Bridges in Bentonville, AR. https://stateoftheart.crystalbridges.org/blog/project/gabriel-dawe/
I went here a few years ago. It was at a temporary museum in DC and I tripped and almost fell into the piece.
I went here when I was younger. I tripped and almost fell into it! Would have sucked.
You see, one of the fundamental steps of thinking of and creating new ideas in design is engagement with consumers. According to McKinney, "prototypes are created, and then tested, and then refined. It is essential to do this because it minimizes the risk of product or service failure." We, the end-users, experience a product only after it's produced and often don't realize how much effort designers put into making it. But even when they believe they have it all figured out, the outcome could still be rather unfortunate. We humans are susceptible to biases that affect our ability to solve problems accurately, so we are prone to error whether we like it or not.

"On Water" Designed By Ayse Erkmen
Dave, where is this situated? EDIT found it: "On Water" is an invisible or - depending on the view - partly visible underwater pedestrian bridge in the harbour of Münster.
Load More Replies...I feel like this would be extremely slippery, or is it scrubbed of biological growth regularly?
What happens when there's a flood, or someone falls over. I sense a lot of risks. It looks beautiful and cool though!
If someone fall over, they would need to get back up again. And flood? I'd say they would wade through much deeper water. Or do you mean a flash-flood? If this is in Münster, the chances of that happening on a sunny day where people would want to get their feet wet are very slim ;-)
Load More Replies...Bored Panda earlier had a chat with Jonathan Shariat, a designer and co-author of Tragic Design: The Impact of Bad Product Design and How to Fix It, about how certain solutions can affect peoples’ lives. "Design is the decisions made about how someone will use and experience the things we make, sometimes we fail to think through the implications of those decisions and it ends up causing harm to others," he said.
Making something that has a purpose and is delightful to interact with takes a lot of learning and experience. Shariat argued that creating good design isn’t that easy. It "requires us to think about and understand others. That doesn't come naturally for most of us but always makes things better."

Exactly what I thought of. "Salvador Disco", lol.
Load More Replies...Apparently, "disco" didn't die, it just morphed into glass bedecked alien creatures. Are they asking "Take us to your light bulb"?

Eye Pod Designed By Rainbowkimono
are we just ignoring that majestic magical alien cat???
"We rely on design every day for critical things, and sometimes they fail us and people get hurt, or it causes major financial damage," he added. These slip-ups often happen because creators have a hard time seeing things from other people's perspectives. "Different people can experience the same thing much differently. It's the job of a designer to understand their users and find what works best for all of them."
Street Bin Concept By Moonjoo Jo From Dongseo Unversity!

Load More Replies...I love it when they hide large underground bins for garbage like this. It's so much nicer to *not* see some HUGE cannister in the middle of an area and putting them under larger walkways isnt that difficult. Recycle bins and stations in Sweden can get so big now, they need special garbage trucks to lift them up anyhow.

Balloon Dog Anatomy Designed By Gummifetus
It’s up for buying on Vat19.com, it’s like a puzzle
Load More Replies...When it comes to design, we usually want it to make us feel safe and at ease. Looking at these aesthetic pictures alone makes us feel calm, but imagine how therapeutic it would be to see them as real-life examples. It turns out that there are instances where the design of a space can actually impact our behavior. Kijeong Jeon, a professor of interior architecture at California State University, Chico, is one of the pioneers of using the built environment as therapy.
He creates multi-sensory settings to help people with autism by using design as therapy. It all began when he was asked to help pick out a carpet for a program for people with autism and other mental disabilities. The professor requested some time to learn about autism to know more about the people he was choosing the carpet for.

From Trash To Shirts By Kastlfel
Just don’t get too close to an open flame on the stuff. Our First responders went through a special class on burns involving plastic clothing
I had a fleece made from recycled plastic. Was warm but it made me feel sluggish. Something felt off.
I can't imagine that these plastic shirts breathe very well. Must be hot
Load More Replies...Aren't they flammable? Aren't these clothes terrifically hot to wear? Don't they break down in the laundry? How does it go from shred to fine, thin, spun fibers?
not gonna wear plastic! Wool and linen for life. (Cotton, bamboo and tencel need too much processing.)
Periodic Table With Real Elements
The radioactive ones just have the radioactive sign instead.
Load More Replies...Buyer beware: When you order one, be sure to check you get the version with actual elements, not just “pictures” of them. See if there is a side preview.
My college's one had a sample of the gas in a transparent container that was placed into the resin. Likely the same here, incorporating a small container of it.
Load More Replies...I have one of these, the rare/radioactive ones are just pictures, other elements are actual pieces. Small, but really cool pieces!
"During the study of autism, I noticed that some of the symptoms are related to tactility, lighting, sound, smell. I realized that all of them deal with the environment. So I thought if those are environmental issues, I can do something for them — I can design certain interior spaces to make them feel at ease. Certain types of colors, certain types of lighting," he told Healthy Building Science.
Hopefully, accounts like Design Therapy will only help to spread the word about linking buildings with design and emotional well-being even further. And if you have any examples to share, don't be shy and post them with #DesignTherapy to get featured!
The Round Gardens Designed By Carl Theodor Sorensen
I love them, there is something so organic about curves. It does illustrate how wasteful circles are for space though.
Should have done with hexagon instead. Just like bee nests. No wasted land.
I don't see a way to get into and then out of the circles except to climb them maybe?
Load More Replies...I love the organic curves, but all the unused in-between space bugs me.
Trojan Horse Designed By Babis_cloud
That it's called a Trojan horse suggests it's a message about electronic waste.
SO satisfying to just wrap your hand around it and hear the clacking buttons!! (Am I the only one?)
The Hug Ring By Richard & Bec
Nice idea, but I have an "open ended" ring similar to this and it's a real nuisance - catches on everything!!!
I'm picturing something small and gross on the other side. Like the Mucinex cartoon mascot.
Cabinet Design By Caleb Woodard Furniture
stupid question... how do you open it? the ridges don't look deep enough to grasp.
Maybe it has a push mechanism? Some of my cabinets don't have handles. I just need to push them in and they slide out.
Load More Replies...the woodworking here is just beyond. the grains line up from drawer to drawer, and that is so difficult with this dimensionality. just amazing work.
thank you for informing us! You make us see even more and appreciate it more.

“Ironing Chips” Artwork By Tanaka_tatsuya
"Mmm, sour cream and chives..." "Ma'am, please stop eating the artwork."
Bet the artist was grinning, maybe laughing, when they made this one. Fun.
Bus Design By Surrealhk
Hmmmm... I hope there's a door there, otherwise I feel someone will be dumb enough to ride it while the bus is moving
You can't quite see it but I think there's a car full of lawyers just behind the bus.
As a transport consultant, I need to comment on practicality. It would be extremely difficult for a mother with a pushchair (stroller) to climb the slide to reach the top deck. This also wouldn't be suitable for single deck buses unless a ladder was added so that passengers could climb up to reach the top of the slide. Clearly the designer has not considered these issues.
Imagine the lawsuits in the USA. THAT'S why we can't have fun things here.
Fold Down Ironing Board Closet/ Mirror By Nils Wodzak!
Not innovative at all. These drop-down ironing boards are pretty much standard in older buildings and houses. The mirror is a nice touch, though.
This design is better because you may need to iron only once a week or once a year. Instead of a huge ironing board cluttering up your home, or being an eyesore, it's hidden away behind the mirror.
Load More Replies...Surprisingly sturdy. My father made one in our old house (without the mirror, just a big rectangle), in the laundry / sewing room. It was actually better than a standard ironing board; those wiggle.
Load More Replies...My "old school" ironing board cupboard has a heat shield behind the shelf the iron sits on and a light you can aim at the board.
These are two different mirrors, not one...you can tell by the mirrors - & this is just a copy of old school ironing boards that used to be installed in homes years ago - nothing new under the Sun...

Load More Replies...Dog House Concept By Bobby_ricci
A cat would just sit in the box it came in! And look at you like you're an idiot!
That's what I was wondering, and no self-respecting doggo is going to potty where it sleeps or eats.
Load More Replies...Probably has a grid of some sort under the "grass", with a catch tray underneath that. It's all removable. You can put puppy pads (or something similar) in the tray. The urine falls through the "grass", through the grid, and onto the pads in the tray. They absorb most of the urine. Solids stay on top of course. You collect and dispose of the solids as you normally would. Then you just take the tray out, and dispose of the pads, rinse the tray, grid, and "grass", put fresh pads in the tray, and put it all back together. Or you can just slide the tray out by itself, and not remove the "grass" and grid, if it only needs a light cleaning. I've seen other indoor dog potties, of the same design.
Load More Replies...It's clever but dogs don't pee where they sleep. I think they'd be very reluctant to pee over their bed..
They are not peeing where they sleep. The waste stays on the roof in a tray beneath the grass.
Load More Replies...The Nazar Rug Designed By Atelierfevrier
If you look at the irregularity of the gap sizes, it would seem the pieces are stitched in ad hoc which is really cool because it means the design has arisen organically. Very nice; reminds me of baitballs of fish shoals whirling around.

These are not 3D printed. I've seen them they are silver. Super gorgeous.
Metal can be 3D printed, in fact 3D metal printing these would be time consuming as heck and moulding them much quicker and easier.

Loneliest House In The World In Iceland . Photos By H0rdur

6 Servings Of Italian Spaghetti Designed By Neal Fletcher
I guess those are normal people servings :D I would grab the whole packages worth and say its one serving
Load More Replies...This design is quite wasteful of materials. It looks like the spaghetti is in six compartments, with an empty space in the middle, so that's wasting the packaging material and it's making the packing bigger than necessary. The hexagonal shape leaves wasted space when packed into rectangular boxes for transportation, so the transport costs will increase per unit weight. If the packaging is used for measuring individual portions why no have a push out hole of the right size?
If it was made out of glass and the middle was filled with sauce, it would be a completely reusable, recyclable, and biodegradable container and a quick meal..
And practical only if you use all the servings together..if you use one what you can do ? Use 1/6 of the sauce and put all the package in the fridge? You must use the rest within days..

My grandfather had a vintage travel chess set that consisted of thin cutouts of the figures that you could stick into slits on the board. So you could even pack up an ongoing game.
It's not like a chess set takes up a lot of room plus you don't have to decipher what the pieces are.

i honestly don't understand what the point of this is, why would you ever want anything less than the full-size sink
What's wrong with using a bowl? It's more hygienic, too. Sinks aren't particularly clean mist of the time, considering what they're used for.

S.a.d Sun Allergy Diaries By Is_siigii Where She Had To Adapt And ‘Become The Float’ As She Was Unable To Relax And Lay On A Float Due To Her Allergy!
This adaptation led her to feel extraordinary where before she felt inferior! Does anyone else seriously want to try on one of these? I know we do!
I had sun allergy for one Summer (drug side effect), and it did suck so much. I had to wear sunscreen even under my long sleeve clothes. Lose linen clothing, cos it was so hot, and huuuge sunglasses and wide hat to always be in a shade. I'm just glad it was only a few months and not my whole life.

The Floating Piers Installation By Christo And Jeanne - Claude - Lake Iseo, Italy
No because it's not a river, it's a lake and the "yellow road" connected the main land and a super small island. There's no need to circumnavigate the island anyway. Fun fact: the other island in the Iseo lake is called Montisola (=mount island) and it's the biggest lake island in Europe. You can climb up to the top of the mount and cars are forbidden on the island, it's too small anyway. Lovely place, worth a visit.

The Hammer Bank is an experiment utilizing the philosophy of Familiarism; the idea of connecting familiar product interactions with new experiences. When you see a hammer, it is instantly understood how it is to be held and used. The material along with the X shaped slot indicates this object is meant to be saved for just the right time.
no more than any other piggy bank, in my opinion. unless you mean that there's no way to get your coins back out except to break it, which is simply a tradition for coin banks in many parts of the world

It would work with a lot of different types of decor, definitely industrialist chic! But also: Mid-century modern, boho, modern contemporary, Mediterranean, Miami-chic, as well as quite a few others. It could even help lighten a Brutalist space, but I'd go for a different color if I were doing it. We had springs similar to these but I forget what they were from. They looked really good in our old tobacco warehouse along with other industrial art pieces, like we had two insulators about a foot high holding a long (12+ feet/3.6 meters) piece of thin, brushed steel for our coffee table. I really miss that warehouse.

might work very well, if one has the hand strength for them. me, i get hand cramps from holding a spoon to stir something, if it goes on for more than a few seconds

Books, Plates And Glasses Are Engulfed By The Squishy Shelves Of Dutch Designer Dewi Van De Klomp's Soft Cabinets, Which Are Made From Foam Rubber In A Bid To Bring More Attention To The "Overlooked" Material
Van de Klomp's Soft Cabinets were born from research into various materials that can be found around the house and would otherwise go unnoticed.
The Utrecht-based designer came across a piece of bright pink foam rubber – a material typically used for cushioning in car seats and wall insulation – and "fell in love" with its potential.
Pretty sure there was something similar to this on a BP DI-Why? Post. It was considered a fail on that post
please no, foam rubber is another material that never disappears from the environment. its useful applications are bad enough, it doesn't need to be used for art.

Honestly, when you begin with a functional item, and your design makes it less functional, it's not good design. Some of these are actually art rather than design. "Design" implies use.
So many ppl criticizing the designs for its utility flaws... It says on the post description its about the idea, the look, not about real products for everyday... Please, take it easy folks
Ah BP commenters. Can always be relied upon to find a negative in any ray of light. Don't you go changing!
