Normally in operational theatres a cat is handy to have, they keep away the mice and rats, which in turn don’t attract snakes. I’m happy not to have a snake in my boots, but these cats are full of fleas, and normally you’re not allowed them indoors. I hope they’ve given the cat a flea treatment too, as it must be awful to be covered in fleas.

Before making a decision to adopt a cat, Molly’s advice is to first examine why you are considering adding a cat to the family. “If you are wanting a friend for your existing cat, you should understand that cats have evolved as a solitary species and are highly territorial, and that the introduction process is a long, slow, methodical one.”
Moreover, it’s crucial to be sure you can commit to the time and patience it will take integrating the cat with your cat(s). “Be certain you are ready to assume the responsibility of caring for the cat for its whole life – which may be 20 years these days.”

The questions you may want to ask before making a decision to adopt a cat include: “Think about the other people in your home; is everyone on board with adopting a cat? Are your children ready to assume the responsibility of safely interacting with a cat? Is everyone committed to caring for and building a relationship with the cat?”

I rescued a runt pedigree cat who was going to be 'humanely destroyed' because no one would pay for him being so small. He may be tiny even at 7 years old but he's perfectly healthy and happy.

Sorry to be the fun police, but folks, PLEASE, put your pets into carriers or, for dogs, connect them to the rear seat belt anchor or put them into the trunk with a net separating it from the passenger compartment. Especially kittens and pups may get scared by passing cars, a truck honking or whatnot and either hide under your brake pedal or run rampage around your face. Plus, if you happen to have an accident with an unrestrained animal, they're a projectile, being dangerous to anything in their path of travel as well as to themselves. They will turn into mush. However cute a shoulder cat is, please leave that for back at home. CARRIERS, folks!

Molly confirmed that with the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, pet adoptions soared. “While people were working from home, many of them fostered kittens and cats, and adopted new pets,” she said.
“Unfortunately, now that people are going back to work, we are seeing a huge number of pets surrendered to shelters and rescues. Cats who were adopted during the pandemic might not be as social because their owners didn’t have as many people over during the shutdown.”

4 months ago, my partner and I opened our home and hearts to a beautiful little 7 year old cat who's owner had passed away. Fell in love with her the second we saw a photo of her. She's unlike any other cat I've ever encountered, she's so affectionate and pleasant. Also incredibly polite. She had a disruptive life with her previous owner as they were heavily disabled so she had multiple strangers in and out of her home all day long. You can tell she just wants to live out the rest of her life in a safe and peaceful loving home. We spoil her rotten. She's a black cat too and knowing black cats are usually in rescue centres the longest because of stupid superstition breaks my heart.

We adopted a gummy senior Yorkie last year, 12 years old and a stray, the rescue centre decided she was worth giving a second chance to and did all of her dental work. We fell in love with her the moment we saw her and adopted her there and then. She was almost blind too and had to have eyedrops every day, she also had a heart murmur. Despite all these problems, she was such a happy little character. We only had her for 4 months, for a little dog, she left a massive hole. Just goes to show that older puppers can give you back just as much as a young one, perhaps even more. Miss you Millie.x

Years ago, I became a foster fail for a mostly toothless chi-terrier mix. She ate absolutely everything since she was found on the streets. After she passed, I found one long tooth under my sofa; I still have it.
If you’re wondering whether to adopt a kitten or a grown cat, there are some key differences to be aware of. “Kittens will be a bundle of energy for about the first eight months (sometimes longer!) Just like children, kittens go through different stages, from biting to testing boundaries,” Molly explained.
Moreover, “kittens require a great deal of interaction with you, and when they don’t get it, they will often create mischief. It is advised to adopt a pair of kittens so they will teach each other bite inhibition and have a playmate while you are not available. Sometimes, the level of attention a kitten requires feels like too much for an older person.”

Since she’s a small breed dog, Lily could live another 5, 7, maybe more years. Adopting a senior animal doesn’t always mean only having a very short time with them.

When my wife and I are older and the kids are gone instead of getting new puppies and kittens we plan to get senior after senior. Give them paradise for their last few months/years then find another to love till their end.

Reminds me of that wonderful short about the kid who is given a three-legged puppy and at first he's all mean and grumpy about it because who wants a dog with only three legs. But then the tripod pup's enthusiasm for life inspires him and he gets up from his video game to go play with his new friend, which is when we find out the kid is also missing a leg.

I think naming cats after food is entirely appropriate. We have Taco and Beans. We had Burrito, Mocha, and Latte, but Burrito was very sick when she came inside and she didn't make to the vet. Mocha and Latte have gone to other homes where there is more room for them.

We also wondered if people are more aware of the “adopt, don't shop" attitude, and Molly confirmed that there is a much better awareness about the number of animals in shelters and rescues who need a home.
Having said that, some people still prefer to purchase a cat from a breeder. “With shelter euthanasia being the number one cause of death in cats, I urge people to adopt from their local shelter. Oftentimes, there are purebred cats in shelters, and cats who appear to be purebred,” the cat behavior specialist concluded.

I volunteer at an animal shelter, and I can tell you that all cats want love! Even the most traumatized cats eventually come out of their shell. They might forever be easily startled or on edge, but they will find moments of safety with you and show you all the love. It's so worth it!

Aw! She looks just like my stray! Sasko (named after a cake flour brand in my home country because her paws look like she has trotted in flour) walked onto our property like she owned the place. Tried to locate her owners for 2 months while kidding myself that I "was fostering her". No-one ever claimed her and I just couldn't hand her to a shelter. Task failed successfully.

Once upon a time, I picked up a blue-eyed white kitten from the street. Had some other cats and was deciding if I wanted to keep her. Meantime, I lost her in my house. Decided to keep, took to vet, was told if her eyes stayed blue, she was most likely deaf. That explained SO much! She was my best kitty ever. We developed our own "sign language" and I never had a problem communicating with her or getting her to do what I needed her to do. She lived for 20 years; I miss her to this day.

One of my cats was a breeders reject. We had to promise to not breed from her and have her spayed, which we were going to do anyway, her markings weren't sharp enough to continue the bloodline. She was the most beautiful and loving cat and lived with us very happily for 17 years.

Get her DNA tested. I adopted a pup last June and NEVER would have guessed! (She is a mutt of many breeds- Great Pyrenees, Mt. Cur, Golden, Catahoula Leopard, Pit Bull, Shetland Sheep Dog, and "Super Mutt", where they can't even figure out the last part! Oh, and she is solid black, about 60 pounds!)

my best friend has four cats and a dog. joplin is the oldest, he’s a cat, and an absolute menace to society. he ate a whole birthday cake, and whenever we try to cook someone has to hold him because he tried jumping in the pot of boiling water before i grabbed him. the others are jeanie, who is a huge fluff ball, toothless (also called tiny) and pandora (also called poopoo). then the dog, scout, is pretty big but has only been around cats so she thinks she is one. i love them all to death

One of my favorite memories is from the first time I saw my dog in person. He was this scrawny, sick dog sitting scared in the shelter. But the moment we made eye contact, he perked up and came right over to me. He had such a loving, happy look in his eyes. It's like he knew I was taking him home. 7 years later and he still gives me that same "I'm so happy to be with you" look 🥺💕 love my boy
