Founded in 1943, the Swedish giant Ikea has changed the way we shop design and furniture forever. In a rapidly evolving industry where new trends are born every day, while new products emerge to improve our lives, Ikea has remained relevant for almost 80 years with its solid fanbase.

And fans, they know what they are getting into – from Scandinavian minimalist design and ready-to-assemble furniture anyone can nail, to friendly prices, weird (or rather, charming!) product names, that iconic blue and yellow plastic shopping bag and simply unbeatable Swedish meatballs with cranberry sauce. How can you not love this?!

No wonder Ikea aficionados gather together in communities online to share their interest and love for all things Ikea. One such group is the Reddit community “Ikea Hacks” which presents itself as “a smart community focused on helping people build the perfect furniture for their living space using items sold by IKEA.”

With 109k members, the subreddit has become a destination for smart interior and furniture ideas to make out of Ikea products, and this is basically a treasure box for anyone in the mood for a home makeover or a full-on renovation.

Scroll down below through the smartest hacks! And when you're done with this post, be sure to check out more Ikea hacks right here.

I'm curious why they did this prior to the flooring. I suppose adding the flooring after might make these look more built-in, but I think their flooring will likely last longer than those bookcases. Also, if you or the next owner want to change the purpose of that room and remove some or all of those bookcases, there's no flooring under them. That turns it into a much bigger project.

I think it would be possible with a hole saw attachment for a power drill, and a handheld saw (a power jigsaw would make it easier). Then finish with a file and sandpaper. But plywood is notorious for chipping, so I doubt my finish would be this beautiful!

Bored Panda reached out to the moderator of the Ikea Hacks subreddit who goes by the handle u/6745408 to find out more about this community that gathers Ikea aficionados from all around the world. The moderator told us that they actually adopted the sub. “I’m not sure who started it, but one night I was looking for a way to make the POÄNG chair more ergonomic or even less bouncy,” they recounted.

That’s when u/6745408 stumbled upon the Ikea Hacks subreddit. “I found /r/ikeahacks with a few hundred subscribers and a lot of spam and no moderators. I figured I’d request the sub, set up some simple automation to clean it up and find someone to mod it,” the moderator said. They gave up on the POÄNG chair, but never left the sub. “I love seeing all of the stuff people come up with,” the mod added.

When asked how, in their opinion, Ikea has managed to remain relevant in this competitive industry of interior and furniture design, the moderator said there are reasons for its enduring popularity, according to them. “Flat-packed furniture isn’t far off from LEGO. Even simple hacks like adding legs to a shelving unit can elevate a piece of furniture. A lot of IKEA furniture is nice enough on its own, but building in shelving units, for instance, can really make a place feel like a permanent space, which is important,” u/6745408 explained.

“When it comes down to it, if your space needs something, you can usually find the parts to create the perfect piece of furniture, even if it takes a little planning and elbow grease,” they added.

Yeah, physics says NO to this hack ;) Instead of the book weight pushing the brackets into the wall (and holding it there), this setup means adding weight to the shelf will pull the top away from the wall. Unless these are screwed into studs (sheetrock anchors won't be enough), or holding exceedingly lightweight books, this is a fail.

We did the same thing, but with a slightly taller Ikea cabinet. We ordered the 3/4 high doors and 2 drawer assemblies so we had storage for the cat's accessories. We used an electrician's access panel door from Home Depot/Lowes/electrical supply house as an entry door on the side. Having half of the interior as carpeting causes 90% or more of the litter crumbles to stay inside the cabinet. The rest come out of the toes when the cat steps out onto a litter-catching mat. If we are going to have a cat for up to 20 years, it just doesn't make sense to randomly shove an ugly litter box in the bathroom, bedroom or basement. We get to use the top of cabinet for decor. Cleanup is easy and a dust buster vac takes care of the crumbles once a week. (We have one cat.)

I did the same but with the tool cabinet. the smell in the house disappears. If you are regular with the cleaning of the box, it does not create an accumulation of odor inside. P.S. the box that I put inside is one of the closed ones, with a filter, and it was very close to the opening

I bought wood and stair carpet pieces and made steps for my boy whose starting to get arthritic. It's a bit bulky but he can get up with great ease so I don't care. The steps are larger and less staggered so he doesn't have to work as hard compared to store-bought ones and much more stable. He's 74lbs and my . . . Much higher weight is well supported so I know it won't buckle under him; I was a bit obnoxious with the supports

Thats one mammoth makeover nothing cosmetic whatsoever - including all new ceiling down wall cupboards, new fridge cupboard, new extractor, taps, brand new floor, table and chairs, new lighting, new bench top, new stove, new drawer cupboards etc etc hardly the sort of innovative thing that belongs on this postings. I want to see more of the jimmy innovation ideas, the lamps remodelled, using the classy ikea aluminium wardrobe glass doors around the house, using the shoe racks in quirky ways, for instance one of my many improviso's is dismantling two desk extender lamps as long elegant ceiling lamps, using aluminium trim around the bland kallax units with stainless steel legs added and now ikea has finally stocked boxes, drawers and doors for these versatile units. however my suggested use of aluminium angle trim and legs take some beating with burnt ply add on boxes and matching cupboard doors. You know Ikea are very anti any improvisation of their products.

My I suggest, remove the actual closet door. And place a handle on the back of the shelves to aid in sliding closed/open as needed. Possibly even a locking mechanism to convert this closet to a 'safe room'.... thought???

It sounds like OP put a glass top on each nightstand, probably replacing the original drawer top instead of going on top of it, and wired two light bulbs into each drawer. Now the tops of the nightstands are lamps, and it still functions as a drawer below and a flat surface

Bottles as suggested but you can put books in those easily enough. I wouldn't personally choose to do this but at least it's different.

If that’s the regular “wood” ikea uses, I’m not sure this will work the best as it is pretty much just sawdust and cardboard shreds glued together and painted over- not very water friendly if there are any leaks.

I have a bin for dry cleaning too. Then, one for whites, the other for darks. If I need to wash something by hand, I put them in a net, then in the white/dark bin.
