Founded in 1943, the Swedish giant Ikea has changed the way we shop design and furniture forever. In a rapidly evolving industry where new trends are born every day, while new products emerge to improve our lives, Ikea has remained relevant for almost 80 years with its solid fanbase.
And fans, they know what they are getting into – from Scandinavian minimalist design and ready-to-assemble furniture anyone can nail, to friendly prices, weird (or rather, charming!) product names, that iconic blue and yellow plastic shopping bag and simply unbeatable Swedish meatballs with cranberry sauce. How can you not love this?!
No wonder Ikea aficionados gather together in communities online to share their interest and love for all things Ikea. One such group is the Reddit community “Ikea Hacks” which presents itself as “a smart community focused on helping people build the perfect furniture for their living space using items sold by IKEA.”
With 109k members, the subreddit has become a destination for smart interior and furniture ideas to make out of Ikea products, and this is basically a treasure box for anyone in the mood for a home makeover or a full-on renovation.
Scroll down below through the smartest hacks! And when you're done with this post, be sure to check out more Ikea hacks right here.

I Finally Finished My "Library" With Floor To Ceiling Shelves (Still Need To Put In New Flooring)
Which shelf leads to the secret room in which you keep your Man Cave/ She Shed?
I'm curious why they did this prior to the flooring. I suppose adding the flooring after might make these look more built-in, but I think their flooring will likely last longer than those bookcases. Also, if you or the next owner want to change the purpose of that room and remove some or all of those bookcases, there's no flooring under them. That turns it into a much bigger project.
I Hacked An Kvistbro Table To Be A Cute Pet Crate For My Dog (And Cats)
I hope the cut metal wires where filed down smooth to protect the kitties!
file the cut ends smooth, please, so the cats can't cut themselves rubbing against them. But great cat nest!
My cat would sit only in the box the table came in, if I decided to do something like this
A Simple Hack Cutting A Keyhole Shape Into An End Table For A Handy Tree Table!
I would not refer to a beautiful keyhole cut like that as “simple.” Whoever did that must have a woodworking shop.
I think it would be possible with a hole saw attachment for a power drill, and a handheld saw (a power jigsaw would make it easier). Then finish with a file and sandpaper. But plywood is notorious for chipping, so I doubt my finish would be this beautiful!
Load More Replies...I don't know.. the table would be more useful (more surface) without the tree, and it's less comfortable to water that tree
At the right height it keeps the cats from digging in the soil, though!
Load More Replies...Uhhh.....I call BS. There stuff usually has laminate and made of MDF. That's not going to come out well.
The sides have cutouts so I assume the same could be done with the top. The table is made with bamboo veneer so perhaps that helped.
Load More Replies...Put some clear Christmas lights in the tree--instant reading lamp! Change them out for the colored kind during the holidays, if that's your thing.
Bored Panda reached out to the moderator of the Ikea Hacks subreddit who goes by the handle u/6745408 to find out more about this community that gathers Ikea aficionados from all around the world. The moderator told us that they actually adopted the sub. “I’m not sure who started it, but one night I was looking for a way to make the POÄNG chair more ergonomic or even less bouncy,” they recounted.
That’s when u/6745408 stumbled upon the Ikea Hacks subreddit. “I found /r/ikeahacks with a few hundred subscribers and a lot of spam and no moderators. I figured I’d request the sub, set up some simple automation to clean it up and find someone to mod it,” the moderator said. They gave up on the POÄNG chair, but never left the sub. “I love seeing all of the stuff people come up with,” the mod added.
My Solution To Keeping The Cat Off The Desk
I see Mass Effect, I upvote. I'm a simple gamer :) Awesome setup too
I kept a wooden TV tray, with a quilt/afghan folded on top of it, next to my desk. My cat could sit on the TV tray without interfering with my computer stuff.
An Unusual Ikeahack - This Regency Gown Is Made From An IKEA Duvet Cover! It’s A Perfect Print For Around 1800 And Is 100% Cotton! Even A Single Duvet Cover Contains Quite A Lot Of Fabric
I don't know if the Great British Sewing Bee is exported (BBC) but they did this in the last couple of weeks. Take a duvet set and reuse/recycle. With the popularity of Bridgerton the style is making a come back. PS. OP looks fab.
I saw that! Eyed up my bedlinen and realised I really need to go shopping...
Load More Replies...Yeah, this print is used a lot for historical costumes. Baroque works too.
Their cotton duvet covers are nice. I even use them for light blankets without an comforter in them.
Fabric sold by the yard is WAY more expensive than fabric sold in bedding sets.
Love this! Started using fabric from 2nd hand linens for sewing projects- big savings and some really unique prints!
Converted The Guest Room Closet Into A Craft Space
For a moment there I thought you were going to convert the space into a bedroom to rent out for BnB.
Way to compartmentalize your work! Yes I had to google how to spell it.
I did a similar thing with a murphy bed closet in an old apartment.
The moderator assured us that the audience of Ikea Hacks is “a really nice community, for the most part. The ideas people come up with are really great, too.” According to the moderator, everybody in the subreddit has an interest in modding flat-packed furniture, even if they don’t actually do it.
Duktig Doll Bed And Handmade Covers For My Little Buddy

Adjustable Window Desk
Reminds me of my student nights when working and seeing all the lights out there - so comforting: you are not alone!
Kind Of Silly, But I'm Proud Of My Ingenuity. The IKEA Lamp (Fado) Was Brighter In Home Than In Store And Hurt To Look At So I Cut A Hole In The Back Of The $5 IKEA Basket I Also Bought (No Product Name Online). Super Cool Mood Light!
Pretty much all of IKEA lamps now come with LED bulbs.
Load More Replies...If that's an LED bulb, then cool. But if that's a hot incandescent bulb, I think a dry thin wooden container might not be such a great idea.
That's what I would have done - you can get the flame-look light bulbs in very low wattage that would not be anywhere near as bright.
Load More Replies...When asked how, in their opinion, Ikea has managed to remain relevant in this competitive industry of interior and furniture design, the moderator said there are reasons for its enduring popularity, according to them. “Flat-packed furniture isn’t far off from LEGO. Even simple hacks like adding legs to a shelving unit can elevate a piece of furniture. A lot of IKEA furniture is nice enough on its own, but building in shelving units, for instance, can really make a place feel like a permanent space, which is important,” u/6745408 explained.
“When it comes down to it, if your space needs something, you can usually find the parts to create the perfect piece of furniture, even if it takes a little planning and elbow grease,” they added.
I Decoupaged Prints Of Starry Night To The Drawers, And Layered Metallic Paint And Medium Over Them For A Painterly Texture. Base Is Stained With Watered Down Paint And Sealed
That's not really a hack, those drawers are meant to be painted. Pretty nice results though.
True... But still putting in the energy/time is not to be underestimated.
Load More Replies...I like the bare plywood Nordic look way way better than any stick-on picky thing for sure -thats why we buy em!
Simple Hack, I Mounted My Ekby Hall Wall Brackets Inverted So I Could Use The Brackets As Natural Bookends For The Shelf
Yeah, physics says NO to this hack ;) Instead of the book weight pushing the brackets into the wall (and holding it there), this setup means adding weight to the shelf will pull the top away from the wall. Unless these are screwed into studs (sheetrock anchors won't be enough), or holding exceedingly lightweight books, this is a fail.
Using Toilet Paper Holder As Headphone Stand
My husband did the same with mine; his is a door hook. Both cute and efficient.
One problem with the Ikea toilet holder its so well made that you can't get an upbend in it... even when hanging for its normal use you have to mount it slightly off plumb so the roll doesn't fall off
I know all least 10 people that use one of these for their headsets. I'm one of them.
When it comes to the content that gets shared on the Ikea Hacks community, the moderator said it’s a mix of show-and-tell and questions. “There are lots of simple mods like painting or using Mactac, plenty of offices/battlestations, elaborate shelving setups, bars, and even greenhouses using cabinets (see /r/IkeaGreenhouseClub).”

Upgraded My Cat's Toilet With This Bestå Litterbox Hack
my cat wouldn't use it. she needs to make eye contact while doing her business... and she doesn't like dark spaces/places (she cries when it too dark in the guest room WHILE SHE SLEEPS)
That's so CUTE, but also a little weir... oh, yeah, it was a cat. Totally normal then. 😉 But when she sleeps? 😄🤣😃😻
Load More Replies...Love it! Only thing is do you guys see the fridge? ..if possible I wouldn't put it in the kitchen
That's a great idea for when guests come to your house and you want to hide the litter box
We did the same thing, but with a slightly taller Ikea cabinet. We ordered the 3/4 high doors and 2 drawer assemblies so we had storage for the cat's accessories. We used an electrician's access panel door from Home Depot/Lowes/electrical supply house as an entry door on the side. Having half of the interior as carpeting causes 90% or more of the litter crumbles to stay inside the cabinet. The rest come out of the toes when the cat steps out onto a litter-catching mat. If we are going to have a cat for up to 20 years, it just doesn't make sense to randomly shove an ugly litter box in the bathroom, bedroom or basement. We get to use the top of cabinet for decor. Cleanup is easy and a dust buster vac takes care of the crumbles once a week. (We have one cat.)
Load More Replies...Alexandra Gater did this ages ago on her YouTube channel. Smart Canadian diy decorating reno young lady. Hope I spelled her name right.
I did the same but with the tool cabinet. the smell in the house disappears. If you are regular with the cleaning of the box, it does not create an accumulation of odor inside. P.S. the box that I put inside is one of the closed ones, with a filter, and it was very close to the opening
With so many wonderful ideas and tips shared on the Ikea Hacks community, it may be overwhelming to pick out the best ones. So moderator u/6745408 shared a couple of their favorite ones that you may find just as interesting. Check out this unbelievable library, this mirror wall, this bar the moderator said they send to everybody, this smart greenhouse with the pegboard and, last but not least, this dress made from a duvet.

100% Recycled Material, Some Hot Glue And Duct Tape, And A Fathers Imagination And A Happy Kid
Any kid would love this! I certainly do and I haven't been a kid in, um, many years.
Oh I love this so much, on so many levels! What a great lesson to teach your kids
This is such a great idea... it will last long enough, and not cost a fortune. My friend bought her kid a very expensive toy kitchen for Christmas... it's May and she hasn't played with it for months!
My 17oz DIY Ultralight IKEA Camping Backpack Made Out Of Frakta Bags

I bought wood and stair carpet pieces and made steps for my boy whose starting to get arthritic. It's a bit bulky but he can get up with great ease so I don't care. The steps are larger and less staggered so he doesn't have to work as hard compared to store-bought ones and much more stable. He's 74lbs and my . . . Much higher weight is well supported so I know it won't buckle under him; I was a bit obnoxious with the supports

My IKEA Kitchen With Custom Fronts
Beautiful but this reno implies a whole lot more than fronts! new lighting, backsplash, stove, fan, counter, wall removal beside the sink, new faucet, new floor... lol $$$$
Thats one mammoth makeover nothing cosmetic whatsoever - including all new ceiling down wall cupboards, new fridge cupboard, new extractor, taps, brand new floor, table and chairs, new lighting, new bench top, new stove, new drawer cupboards etc etc hardly the sort of innovative thing that belongs on this postings. I want to see more of the jimmy innovation ideas, the lamps remodelled, using the classy ikea aluminium wardrobe glass doors around the house, using the shoe racks in quirky ways, for instance one of my many improviso's is dismantling two desk extender lamps as long elegant ceiling lamps, using aluminium trim around the bland kallax units with stainless steel legs added and now ikea has finally stocked boxes, drawers and doors for these versatile units. however my suggested use of aluminium angle trim and legs take some beating with burnt ply add on boxes and matching cupboard doors. You know Ikea are very anti any improvisation of their products.
First Time Staining... I Love How This Turned Out! (Ivar With Foldable Table!)
Love how you matched the backsplash in the kitchen with the inside of the piece.
You actually fooled me. I genuinely thought this Ivar storage was a vintage piece. Love the design and did a great job staining the wood.

I Built A Sliding Bookcase Out Of 3 IKEA Besta Bookshelves With 6 Casters Screwed To A Large Bottom Plate
What happens if someone rolls the cabinets back in front? is there an escape handle/latch?
My I suggest, remove the actual closet door. And place a handle on the back of the shelves to aid in sliding closed/open as needed. Possibly even a locking mechanism to convert this closet to a 'safe room'.... thought???
Load More Replies...Hmmmm.... I have a seldom used closet in my den, and these would look great in there. I'm going to try it. Well done!
Window Benches With Storage, Made With Sektion Over Fridge Cabinets, 2x4 Base With Baseboards, 2x6 Appearance Boards On Top, Painted
It's easy to build a shelf over a radiator! They can also be purchased.
Load More Replies...I wonder if those are built to hold the weight of a person. They just have plants now, but I'd hate it if someone sat on them and broke them. They'd feel horrible.
Maybe with a bit (or a lot) of cushioning, it would bear the weight better? 🤔

Was Told To Post This Here. I Built A 3D Printer Enclosure From 2 IKEA Lack Side Tables. All The Blue Pieces Are 3D Printed
