30 “I’m Sorry, What!?” Takes On Movies By People Who Missed The Point, As Shared Online In an open class discussion about what movies we thought were best and worst a guy in my film studies class said he thought marvel movies were best because they have the biggest budgets, most effects, biggest stars, make the most money, etc and he thought Monty python movies were the worst because they were cheesy and not funny. He specifically cited the coconut horses as being stupid. I try to be open minded and not judgmental about people anyone and especially those who share my passions but I just couldn’t ignore how god awful of a take that was. He’s a studio execs favorite demographic I imagine

I can understand people not enjoying Monty Python for not understanding the humour. That said, the biggest budget and biggest stars don't always equal the best movies. I personally find James Cameron's Avatar to be really overrated, and it has some great special effects and a massive budget, but the story is very generic, and I find that the characters are bland.

Omg... the best thing was that they had planned for horses in the beginning, but ran out of budget. Can't afford horses, next best thing.... coconuts!! It became the continuous running joke that tied the entire movie together. So brilliant!!

Thing is that older humor can feel dated & dusty because you've seen so many things that were inspired by it. Like I Love Lucy was surely great in its time, but by the time I was old enough to watch, it seemed a little old hat.

Monty Python. One of the most influential groups of 20th century. And a film student doesn't see what they did? Not only they were the first guys making fun of Jesus and not getting in prison (or killed), they were the first to break a lot of taboos. Not to mention that there is a programing language called after them. (Also you might be familiar with 'spam' for something unwanted or 'llama' for somebody stupid. Those are both from MP)

IIRC they used the coconuts because they literally could not afford horses. But the non-sensical humor is what made the movie great. "What kind of swallow? African or European?" "I...I.. don't know.. Arrrrrrgggh" (as the old man of the bridge falls into the ravine below).

I will start by saying that I agree with you that the take on Monty Python is "god awful." That said, hasn't Mr. Bean enjoyed massive success, both as the titled character and Mr. Atkinson the actor in other roles/voiceovers? Often times, I feel as if MP simply existed in an era of film that didn't enjoy the same worldwide exposure that Marvel movies have. I showed my 9-year-old son (a devout Marvel fan) the "Fish Slapping Dance" on YouTube, and he shot milk out of his nose!

There was dead silence from the rest of the class for a moment, the professor shook his head sadly, and then the class continued as though the poor misguided sod had not spoken. I don't think people realize just how small of a budget the early Monty Python productions had. Holy Grail was something like £170,000, which would have been around $400,000 in 1974. It made over $170,000,000.

There's a lot that's not stupid and a vast array to choose from. Some very clever comedy but it isn't always to everyone's taste. Same for stuff from the US, a mix of good and bad. I think the worst comedy I've ever seen was the execrable 'Mrs Brown's Boys' though. Stay away from that complete cr@p!! How it has got to yet another season is beyond me.

30 “I’m Sorry, What!?” Takes On Movies By People Who Missed The Point, As Shared Online I went with my best friend in high school to see “Backdraft”. It was a populat movie about firefighters and she was really into whatever Baldwin brother was in that movie. It was a pretty good movie. Some major plot holes and unrealism set aside by good acting and great sets/special effects. I was especially surprised by a small role by Donald Surherland who did an amazing job with just a fee minutes.

Came out saying I was pleasently surprised and glad she dragged me along to go see it. She was silent. I asked what was wrong and she said she didn’t like it. Her reason?

“There was too much fire.”

Yeah, that was a definite undercurrent through out all of this, and made this very much a farce. The thing with farces is, like satire, some people don't get what a farce is and thus don't get the movie at all. A lot of people hated the TV show Modern Family because they didn't get farce, and that show was a master of it.

30 “I’m Sorry, What!?” Takes On Movies By People Who Missed The Point, As Shared Online So if you watched the trailers for Arrival [2016] then it wouldn't be unreasonable per se that you went into the movie expecting it to be an Independence Day style invasion movie since it is really particular about including like every single dramatic scene in the movie that might make it seem that way.

As a result plenty of people went to watch it and were kind of shocked that it wasn't really that, it was more about the nature of language and perception and it gets into some way more heady shenanigans as well.

I will never forget, end of the movie in the cinema, everyone standing up and kind of shell shocked by what they had just seen and this group of older ladies in the row ahead of us whinging very loudly about the film.

'It was so boring!' 'It didn't make any sense. Do they think we are stupid or something?'

Hmm, well, indeed.

That is a general complaint about the Dune series of books, actually. Not sure what your sister saw in them to counter that, so not trying to address that. While I'm going to be down voted by people not realizing I'm talking about the basis for the criticism and not my own thoughts or beliefs: The major issue critics have with it is it's a White Messiah story. Basically you have all these indigenous people sitting around doing nothing until the White Man shows up and tells them what to do and what's best for them, and they're so amazed by the magic white man they make him their leader. That's it in short form. People have written pages about it. Google it if you would like to know more.

30 “I’m Sorry, What!?” Takes On Movies By People Who Missed The Point, As Shared Online When the original 1987 *Robocop* was released, our local paper had a movie critic I had not read before, Laurie Horn, review it. She completely missed the movie’s outrageous satire and gave the film zero stars.

Among the things she noted was that the film was “very violent” and that the target audience was “immature boys”. That “the rest of the human race will want to stay far away from this witless and cynically exploitive film”. “If there was satire in the concept, (director) Verhoeven’s bloodthirstiness destroys it”.

She went on to write, after describing the scene where Robocop shoots a would be r****t through a woman’s dress (and hits his… uh… *privates*): “Humor like this is fit only for the likes of Klaus Barbie and Rudolf Hess”.

My guess is she didn’t like it.

Hahahah to be fair though, the first third of the movie is them doing absolutely nothing but waking up. This is a low key slow burn movie. I saw it as a kid, in the theater when it came out. I think I was 8. Even then, I wasn't bored though.

30 “I’m Sorry, What!?” Takes On Movies By People Who Missed The Point, As Shared Online Logan Paul is a goldmine but Armand white is the undefeated GOAT of dumb reviews

“none of these digital-cartoon characters reflect human experience; it’s essentially a bored game that only the brainwashed will buy into. Besides, Transformers 2 already explored the same plot to greater thrill and opulence"

-Armand white talking about Toy Story 3

Recently watched the 4th Toy Story and it was kinda delightful. I have no idea how any of them compare to Transformers movies as I haven't seen any, but my impression is that they're comparing apples to oranges?

Well, I wouldn't bother with the opinions of people who use a term such as "most boringest"
