Im 5-7 years away from retirement. I want to stay in this position, supporting this workgroup until I retire. I don't want to move up, I don't want a career change, maybe a special project now & then, and I want to work with nice people. I want to retire from this company. Go select someone else to be in leadership. Leave me alone.
I feel this...I was made the lead of the work crew I'm on when my work partner of 10 years passed away last December. Never wanted to be in a leadership role, but since Im the senior person on the crew, I was kinda pushed into it. I dont want the headaches, I dont want to tell others what and how and when to do everything. I dont get paid anymore for doing it...but here I am.
Load More Replies...yeah that extra percent or 2 "merit" increase you have to bust your butt to get just ain't worth it
You extra work is far more likely to be exploited rather than rewarded.
Load More Replies...Every workplace benefits from those steady, reliable workers who just do what the job requires and don't burn themselves out gong the "extra mile". That's commendable.
Why though? Presuming you're working the same hours, and not referring to back breaking labor - why not be the best you can be? Why not help others with your experience? In everything you do, strive for excellence. You won't always achieve it, but that's ok. You won't always be compensated for it, that's ok too. A thing not done as well as possible wasn't worth doing at all.
Part of doing your job well is to be compensated for it. If you have 2 people doing the same job,one performing well and the other half-a$$ing it, yet they both get the same pay, raises, bonuses and benefits, what's the incentive to perform better? The good feels that come from knowing that you did something as good as you can do it is nice and all, but good feels won't pay the bills.
Load More Replies...Same goes for school. Unless you get extra credit or if that grade truly matters to you. Like in college right now it doesn't matter if i get a 97% pr 73% on an exam, at the end of the year it only says "passed" or "failed" Attendance also, if you learn more on your own and just waste time (and interrupt during) the class, it makes more sense to stay home/library whatever. Check with the professor thought (just in case they have a rule-80%attendence or you cant take an exam or something)
Once you’re known at this it’s impossible to step back. Any time you slightly ‘under’achieve (whilst probably still doing more than most), for whatever reason, it’s picked up on and scrutinised. Much easier to pick on one person than try and change the attitudes and working practices of many
I always become the go to person / the leader automatically and it's annoying 😑
LOL!!! I was working on location in New Hampshire for a TV pilot and the crew was from Los Angeles. Every weekend they would make these big group plans, and here's me thinking "we JUST spent all week together filming 12 hour days!!"
I pretty much quit socializing with co-workers back in the 80s, partly due to being a single mom, but mostly because I just got fed up with spending the work week & then the evenings/weekends with people who really didn't give a sh*t about me. They just wanted to party like they were still in college!
This. I'm a career firefighter. Our department is like a family. Unfortunately, like a family, there's the black sheep. They want to go shoot pool, hang out or do other things together. Same ones talk smack on each other. They invited me to go camp one weekend. Thanks, but no thanks. I have to spend 24 hours with some of you and that's enough. And I sure as heck keep to myself and don't tell them anything because some are very manipulative. And few already took promotions from my hard work. Yes. Bad enough I already told one of them that they would know their duty if they would get out from under the chiefs desk.
I remember at a review, boss says "we are all part of the ...... Family" . I replied "I already have a family Sean" . Thanks but no thanks.
I had an acquaintance who worked at the Navy Annex in Washington DC. His job involved moving a lot of paper across his desk each week. His boss was adamant that no one went home, especially on Friday, with anything still on (or in) the desk. Said supervisor would come in Saturday morning to check desks, including the drawers. If there was anything which might be called pending, you'd be called in, or if a drawer was locked you'd be called in. So, the workers took to using the interoffice mail system to clear the desk, the stuff would sit for the weekend on the huge carts which roamed the hallways, and be delivered back to the sender on Monday morning.
Now that was a smart move! He worked the system perfectly.

We got in touch with the creator of 'Corporate Bish' who was kind enough to chat about their project and the importance of work memes to keep our sanity intact. Apparently, when she started the account in July of 2021, she worked a corporate finance job with hard deadlines, an understaffed team, a struggling management team, and 80-hour work weeks. "I had reached a point of frustration and complete burnout," she told Bored Panda.
The founder revealed that before 'Corporate Bish', she was not the biggest social media person. "I had an Instagram account that I barely used and, one day, I randomly came across memes that were work-related. This inspired me to create my own page where I could share my thoughts and, in a sense, vent about my experiences in the workplace. I felt as though I had so much to say, that I could turn it into content and take a shot at creating memes."
"I soon realized that I was not alone, that others were experiencing some of the same things that I was," she said. As a result, her efforts paid off, and the Instagram account began to grow, evolve, and amass 100k meme-loving followers within one year.
Oh wow. This is a nichey but too-common-in-my-job emotion I wasn’t expecting to see in a meme. I love it. Representation.
The person that asks if there are any questions doesn't really mean it. Quit trying to impress people and shut up so we can get out of here.
OR, because then you become the reason the meeting goes on another 20 minutes. My old boss used to do that, if you asked a question he didn't really answer, but just... found a 15-20 minute way to say "I don't know'".
Or worse...it will put you on everyone's s**t list for drawing out an already excruciatingly-long meeting.
So you mean you found out you were being paid a third of what you’re worth? I wouldn’t be happy about that…
I think they left because they were being paid a third of what they were worth. Maybe would have stayed for double.
Load More Replies...I had that happen. I refused to keep doing all the extra work without any extra pay and they transferred me to another department. They hired 3 people to do what I was doing myself; and the first month after they wrecked at least $40,000 in product. I left soon after.
Few decades ago this happened to me. I trained one of the replacements. Had lunch with him about a month after I left. He was turning in his notice that day. He said they were still trying to hire other people and he didn't know how I did everything I did. Young and stupid that's how.
Load More Replies...Was fired for something that was my boss's fault and had pointed it out to him several times. When his wife fired me and asked me to stay 2 more weeks, I pointed out to her (as I was cleaning out my desk) whose fault the situation was, then left. They had to hire 2 people to replace me, one of which was a man who was paid twice my salary.
omg this is so gratifying, and the 3 “chosen ones” still didn’t come close to my talents 🤣
This was my cousin she basically ran the company's financial department by herself. Including helping with logistics as her company had contracts for various car companies. From what I understand she was doing the job of 4-5 people. She's no longer there but ya, I used to think she was crazy being that overworked.
Got asked to translate at my job just because they knew I knew the language (but definitely wasn’t supposed to be officially translating anything for legal and policy reasons), so I just said “will I get the $5-10K pay increase if I do so? Because if not then no, it’s not in my job description to do so.”
Except at least where I live literally every single job description adds "and other duties that may not be directly expressed herein" or something, so that wouldn't fly.
Load More Replies...According to her, the main driver and inspiration behind the content is her personal journey with work and the path she continues to navigate. "I have since transitioned into a new job and my content has also followed this journey where I talk about my new role and responsibilities. One year ago, I created Corporate Bish based off of my own experiences and I plan to continue being the sole creator and operator."
When asked about the community, the creator told us it has evolved into a diverse group of people across the general workforce. The initial plan for the content, however, was related to the corporate world of finance. So the woman knew she had to make a few changes. "As my following grew, I realized that many worked in different fields from healthcare to retail and anyone in the workforce. This encouraged me to connect with a wider audience outside of just finance."
"It also helped me understand that my work experiences were not necessarily specific to my job or finance, but that they applied to everyone across the general workforce. In an effort to connect with many more, my content began to evolve and better relate to the workforce in general," she added.

If I actually acted my wage, I'd have to just fall to the ground and form a fetal position
But wage doesn't always equal knowledge. I've had people make more than me but actually know way less. I still don't take their condescension or attempt of telling me how to do my job.
Boss, to me: "You can't fit 60+ hours worth of work into a 40 hour work week without mistakes or overtime? Lazy! Greedy!" Boss, to coworkers: "You managed to fit 10 hours worth of work in a 40 hour work week? Such a wonderful worker!"
Like the time when I was hired to make some changes around the company because they seemed stuck in doing things the same over and over. They wanted something new they said. Got fired because I didn't do things their way :)
If you've ever felt the dire effects of the grueling 9-to-5 grind, you know how therapeutic work memes can be. To the creator of this project, joking about the corporate world is an outlet and a means to escape the stresses and frustrations of work, even if just for a brief moment. "I’ve learned that there are several universal truths that every corporate worker can relate to, which is why corporate memes are so popular," she said. "After all, laughter is the best medicine even in the workplace."
"I believe that memes and jokes about the misery of work help workers find comfort in knowing that they are not alone and that there are others. The comment section also makes it possible for workers to share their experiences, thoughts, and even vent. While negativity is everywhere, I find that most of the comments are positive and a lot of them have even given me a good laugh. They have definitely eased up the stress in my day."
Its so exhausting to look interested and as if you are paying attention.. huufff
Thank Cthulhu for MS Teams meetings. No camera = no need to pretend to be paying attention (most of the time) or be interested (ever).
I NEED to do this as my two-week notice if I end up in another toxic horrorland like my last (retail) job (then again, I suppose it's on me for APPLYING to those jobs in the future, but my cats and puppy do need to eat.... )
Load More Replies...I actually like this better than a letter. It's so unassuming and passive.
Am I the only one that LIKES meetings? Lemme get this straight... You want me to sit here, and listen to you and other people talk... and I get paid for it... and I don't have to do actual work??
I think some folks dislike them because the work that they are expected to do in a day still has to be done, regardless of how many meetings they have to attend or how long they have to be in them. So that surprise project meeting that takes 3 hours to get through just set you back 3 hours from finishing your daily goals.
Load More Replies...The creator stressed the importance of mental health, well-being, and work-life balance. "I stayed in a job way too long where each of these things were a constant struggle. I thought it was the norm, but it is not and should not be. Work will always be there and a job is just a job. Trust your instincts, if you're not in a good place, you’ll know when it is time to move on. The grass is sometimes greener on the other side, but you won’t know unless you try it," she advised.
I had a routing slip I made up that said "This has been sent to me for no clear reason that I can imagine, I have no idea what to do with it, and so, I am sending it on to you. Please deal with it."

Help me get my virtual assistant business going so I no longer have to rely on a corporate paycheck... Amen.
Unfortunately, the pressures of our jobs can often leave a heavy burden on our shoulders. There are many frustrating factors associated with corporate life that leave workers feeling unmotivated, exhausted, and terribly stressed from their daily tasks. If we don’t pick up on these signals in time, they can have dire consequences on our state of mind, and can even lead to burnout.
In 2019, the World Health Organization classified workplace burnout as an occupational phenomenon. However, many employees glide through their careers without even realizing they are experiencing it. To learn more about this syndrome, we reached out to Carlo De Guzman, a burnout coach and CEO of The Work Vibe. He told Bored Panda that burnout can impact workers in every aspect of their lives: work, personal life, and health. He explained how exactly this chronic workplace stress affects all three in detail.
Physically, 7am. The other two? Let me think. It depends on what they have me doing.

This i think is sad. I've volunteered at my dream job, and am working towards my own horse farm because I loved it so much. My current dream is getting my virtual assistant business going.
I never did either, I hated most days at work but kept at it. Now I'm retired, thank heavens.
Admitting this makes you (& me) undeserving of housing, food and medical care, right? Tragic.
"Work: You can start decreasing your work productivity levels, attention to detail, confidence in yourself, or hurt your relationships with your management or colleagues due to the change in your behavior or attitude. Work becomes much more of a burden to your life, even for people who love their job but feel burnout," De Guzman explained.
When it comes to personal life, it takes a toll on our bonds with others. "Your relationships with family, friends, or romantic partner may also be affected because of your behavior/attitude change or your need to withdraw from them due to feelings of exhaustion or instability."
Lastly, burnout can have an alarming effect on your well-being. "All four pillars of your health (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual) can get impacted. Examples can include erratic sleeping, change in appetite, lack of energy, being cynical, aggressive, irritable, feeling emptiness, lost, unsure, or exhaustion," the coach added.
Paradoxically, the real trouble is when your gross salary is not even gross enough.
Taxes i wouldn't mind if they went to improving schools, health care, educating and employing the homeless, etc... but i feel violent urges when i see the schmucks in our government live like royalty while average people can't afford homes of their own, children can get shot in schools, antivaxers are spreading polio, and homeless camps are springing up everywhere. Can't fix greed if the government is full of it.
Taxes are the least of the problem nowadays. Between health insurance, and the money I need to put into our health savings account (HSA)....
If Americans weren't so brainwashed by the very wealthy to believe that anything which reduced the income of the wealthy was "communism", and that "communism is evil", the US would have socialized medicine, and healthcare would be affordable.

De Guzman pointed out that feeling exhausted from our jobs means we over-committed ourselves to tasks that are causing us stress for a prolonged period. "If you stick to that over-commitment, you will continue to feel burnout and dissatisfaction with your job, even if you love what you do," he warned.
When asked about the most common burnout symptoms, the coach explained that there are a variety of different signs. However, he mentioned these three key indications:
- Exhaustion — feeling tired and low in energy
- Cynicism — negativity and detachment from work or people
- Reduced professional efficacy — inability to cope, reduced productivity or morale
"The longer you don't take care of your symptoms, the more detrimental burnout will be to your health. The symptoms can become more major with severe illnesses, anxiety disorder, physical or mental collapse, or deep feelings of being lost and unsure," De Guzman said.
Reminds me of the joke "I have enough money to last the rest of my life, provided I live for only one more week." Or one of the numerous variations.
I was JUST thinking that while listening to the Bangles on the radio today....why would Sunday be anyone's FunDay?!
This Sunday will be my funday as on Monday the family and I are flying to the States for our summer holiday. 😀
Load More Replies...Definitely the latter! Being a Brit, I wouldn't be doing my duty if I wasn't moaning about Monday morning on a Friday afternoon
It isn't really a Sunday unless you spend the entire day feeling like you're somehow wasting precious time, followed by waves of sadness, anxiety, and despair starting at around 7 pm.
To quote Douglas dams: "In the end, it was the Sunday afternoons he couldn't cope with, and that terrible listlessness which starts to set in at about 2:55, when you know that you've had all the baths you can usefully have that day, that however hard you stare at any given paragraph in the papers you will never actually read it, or use the revolutionary new pruning technique it describes, and that as you stare at the clock the hands will move relentlessly on to four o'clock, and you will enter the long dark teatime of the soul."
All I do Sunday is stress about having to go to sleep early and getting all my laundry and chores done since there will be zero time during the week to do them.
On Sundays, my gaze strays to the clock far more often than Saturdays because I'm constantly checking how much precious spare time I've got left.
The burnout coach explained that one thing can tremendously help in finding relief from stress, and that’s finding humor in funny videos, memes, or other forms of content that can take away our thoughts from demanding situations. "There is comfort in knowing you're not the only one suffering from similar struggles. It's good to know that there are other working people going through something similar and can support you by laughing along with you or providing helpful advice if reasonable," he told us.
However, this is only a temporary solution. "Humor is only one helpful source for our health. It's not the only source," he said. If you want to improve your mental and emotional health, these are some of the helpful sources De Guzman suggested: "Rest, reflection exercises, self-compassion, doing more things aligning with your values, proper nutrition, body movement."

When people ask me what I "do" I smile & say, "my retirement began the day I got married!" Of course, being a house spouse is 24/7 whereas "full time" is 40hr/wk
"Focus on what you value in life. The more we align our life to our values, the easier it is for us to become happier more frequently," he said. "If you overcommit to something along the way, have the self-awareness to re-balance yourself using: boundaries, time-management, prioritization, planning, or self-love. If your job doesn't align with your values, make progress towards aligning your career to something more meaningful for you," De Guzman concluded.
My boss used to go out and buy a bountiful harvest to stock our break room-- fruits, veggies, yogurt-- the works. One time they came for a surprise visit and saw the one rotten orange and brown banana we usually have. He was livid when they called him out and sent me out to go buy groceries from costco then blamed me for having not done the inventory un front of them-- I was a part time seasonal cashier with literally no control or responsibilities to stock the break room past requesting green tea every week in the aspirational jar we called "a suggestion box"
Someday I’ll own my own company. The problem is, bosses tend to promote people pleasers who kiss their bum, instead of those who are actually devoted to doing a good job and fulfilling the company’s mission. I don’t want to be the ego-driven queen of the suck-ups; I’d rather be questioned by someone who uses their brain and sees how a certain proposal could be dysfunctional, if I don’t see it at first. People smarter than me. And I’d be prouder if the people I will one day hire as mini bosses pay a fair living wage, instead of trying to ‘save’ the company money. They won’t be able to even save their jobs if they simply can’t pay the janitor enough to retire. Or treat him/her like an actual human being.
Except their boss when they are pretending to understand the answer to the question they just asked you about what you are working on.
I actually like my boss's boss. But HIS bosses (there's more than one) I'm not sure about.

Load More Replies...I once worked a receptionist position where people wanted to stop and chat about whatever - customers, coworkers, sales reps. I also had to answer a phone that rang non- stop with calls from customers who wanted to make small talk before getting to the point of their call. Then I would get reprimanded for missing overflow calls and not moving calls along fast enough but I also was supposed to give undivided attention to customers who were there is person. It was a no-win. I needed a sign like this.
I never care what other people's kids/grandkids/great-grandkids are up to, but when you get to be an old fart like me it's about the only thing other people my age talk about. (Plus medical problems.) So it's no wonder I've become more reclusive.
I needed this at one of my last jobs. We have stuff to do, brenda, we don't have 30 minutes to look at 100 identical photos of your grandkids.
I now work from home, but at my last place of employment, I had a coffee mug that said "I'm not here to make friends."
Load More Replies...Everytime someone stops by like they might want to chat, smile and say "Karen! Just who I was hoping to see. Do you have a couple of minutes? Excellent, you can take this off my plate - as you can see, I'm swamped." Then you give them some of your work. Either you get to pass off some of your workload, and they're too busy to chat, or they have to go because they're much to busy to help you. It's win-win. And if they complain, well, "With projects x, y, and z, I'm over capacity. We need to share out some tasks, or we need to push back delivery dates. Karen's underutilised right now, and was telling me she had some free time, so I asked her to help out. If I should have confirmed that with you, I apologise, and I'll make sure I keep you updated going forwards."
I'm not a particularly violant person, but I did hurl a water bottle across the room in a moment of frustration once.
I honestly believe most people are functioning sociopaths/psychopaths where they want to do wrong but choose not to because they don't want to go to jail.
Money is the answer to every problem and if money doesn't work then violence will
I HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I went from hostile workplace at a UPS to working at an Amazon warehouse which was somehow slightly better... But now I work at an IT company and the coworkers and boss are so amazing I don't know how to react. I take an hour train in and out of work and i made a side comment about how it would be nice if I could work on the train and my boss overheard and immediately agreed. I was surprised and felt like I did something illegal in the workplace. Common sense? No way! But it does mean that I only need to be in the office 6 hr a day!
That totally happened to me. Now I know what a pound puppy I am. Great boss, great co-workers and a place with a mission that I believe in. and I'm terrified that everyone's going to gang up on me/fire me/berate me/have me do stupid stuff for no reason. After 9 months, I'm still vigilant, can't relax.
This is an actual thing that happens. I believe that research and studies have been done that prove it. They show that working in a toxic, hostile environment warps folks sense of what is and what isn't acceptable and what proper office norms are.
Similarly: I left a toxic relationship and I don't know how to act in a nontoxic relationship.
Yep. Same. I commented in a another post about a receptionist position i was in. Non- stop phone ringing and I wasn't allowed to leave the desk unless someone was available to cover. When I got a new job, I was like wait, what? I can used the bathroom without asking, take breaks and actually participate in company parties and not just have a plate of food brought to me while everyone else was having fun?
Too, funny. When my husband and I moved from Washington DC (lived there 2.5 years) to North Carolina I turned to him and said, “We need to remember, we are nice people.”
You know, everyone complains about this (and to a degree I get it) but like, if you buy as much as you can now or slowly from now you won't have to deal with the crowds or the fake sales where they hike up the prices just to pretend they've got a deal.

I tried to work with her to stay and she thought she could have her cake and eat it too-- told me that if i don't care then don't stay. What I did to make her think I didn't care: I had dared to use my pto to get married (no honeymoon just 3 days off) and use all my allotted personal days for the year when I was hospitalised unexpectedly (despite me historically being the 12hr shifts 6days a week kind of worker...). Well had a supervisor that locked to tell the team they had to work a long Saturday as he was leaving early Friday for a weekend trip to the mtns. Someone actually called him on it. Left that job for a much better one that I still work today years later. I am certain I'm making more money than him and have a better work/life balance.
Load More Replies...Ha. I told my boss a month ahead of time I was going to be unavailable for OT on a certain weekend as we were going out of town. Then I reminded him 2 weeks before, the week before and then again on Monday the week of. Sure enough, cue Thursday that week and he comes to me saying, "You can work this weekend, right? We're swamped and got a lot coming through." I said not unless he can figure out how I can do it from out of state. The look on his face....no clue. I told him and it didn't even register. I asked how he could have no idea as I had talked to him FOUR times about it.
I don't get other countries. In England you are required by law to take time off. Even when you have no time off left, they can't make you work over 48 hours a week without YOU giving them permission and they have to give you 11 hours rest between each shift. Drivers of heavy goods vehicles or jobs requiring extreme concentration have even more laws on how many hours rest you need per day, week and months!
It's so much fun watching them sputter and hem and haw cuz they didn't pay attention and now act like its some big surprise. I've even had them call me wanting me to cancel my travel plans because "they're swamped and short staffed." Called me while they were on vacation, out on a lake in their boat, trying to guilt me into canceling MY vacation to keep some B.S. promises that they made. Naw man...
At 5:15 pm last night (Friday) my boss at my new job told me to have a good weekend.
... my manager tried to make me work the night before, the morning of AND the morning after my wedding... after I had booked it off 11months earlier AND she had approved it because "business needs change"... she told me that if I couldn't be reasonable and be a team player then I should leave... loool.
When that one coworker in a meeting won’t stop asking a single manager questions that could just be a meeting between the two of them but we all have to be a part of it for the next 10 mins (My personal pet peeve, but my office is not very efficient).
Right?! Like this could’ve been a meeting between you two and an email for everyone else! So annoying and I hate the time wasting!

I can think of one person in particular. Most of the time it was completely off topic.
The duration of a meeting is proportional to the number of "personalities" present.
I love the subcontractors that don't read the contract first, then they get all mad because we're holding them to what they didn't bother to read
Or at the end of a meeting that final question that actually has a simple asnwer but end up extending the meeting a half hour.
I need to go on a very long road trip and hit all the top-rated microbreweries in North America.
Nothing makes me laugh harder than examples like this that have NO comments because we all know if we said what we thought, it would be our last day on BP. ^_^
You are technically not being paid by how hard you work, but by how hard you are to replace. So hang in there!
The money sounds nice, but i'd rather not become a festering slime ball. XD
The censorship is so bad, I couldn't see it for a few seconds
“It’s all good,” “Sounds good,” “Cool,” “That’s okay.” *internal screaming*
Cool. Coolcool cool cool. Cool. (Brooklyn 99 for "ohh c**p" or "so totally not cool.")
Load More Replies...Now go back to the report about the report you have to do for Monday.
Can't wait for the meeting to let us know that the previous meeting scheduled for this time has been cancelled
Should probably have a meeting about the best time to meet about this meeting
Somedays it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps.
Me trying to get a day off work: I have an appointment. (Jk haha)
and then when you do have an appointment they don't believe you
Load More Replies...I feel like the only person who disagrees with *some* "meetings could have been emails" when I get a pages-long email trail that really could have been a ten minute meeting/zoom call. And it needs to be followed by an *actual* meeting because tonal context is not possible by written text alone.
And? Did the work get done? Yes? Then I don't see the problem here.
With inflation $ 1 million may not fulfill all our dreams.
Load More Replies...What's stopping you? I've had this for years. Recommend.

I believe this information will be very useful to someone out there because someone might still be in the same situation as me. I have been looking for a way to spy on my husband’s phone for quite some time but sadly most of the information available has not been useful. Tried some apps and software and none worked. I found this page some days ago but didn’t take it seriously. because I saw different comments and I got confused and I don't know who is real or not. So I summon the courage to contact a Wizard here his name wizardcyprushacker I send an email to him on {wizardcyprushacker@gmail.com} for help and they came through. I now have access to my husband’s iPhone and I found sufficient proof that he is seeing different women. Kindly reach out to him right now for a good job Email: {wizardcyprushacker@gmail.com} WhatsApp :+1 (424) 209-7204
