7 Years Ago She Said "Yes" To Me With This $500 Fruity Pebble Of A Diamond When I Was Broke. I Make $200k Now. I Surprised Her With An Upgrade For Valentine's Day

She said to return it, that "anything else would be a downgrade" because of what this little dot means to her. So I am returning this $8k upgrade and I'm taking her to Korea and Japan this winter instead for the same price.

I fully understand her. The first ring is the one which symbolizes all the memories and their unique moments of loving relationship. The second one is just a shiny piece of jewellery with no further meaning. Make many happy memories on your vacation!

I actually have a similar story with my fiance. I just gave him a random ring I had at home and didn't even know where it came from back in the day, as a symbolism so he knows I won't give him up despite all the issues and can always look at it when he feels bad. I've recently offered to buy him a better ring made of dinosaur bone (he likes dinos), but he declined because the random ring means more to him

Similar situation for us - when we became engaged, we were both in college and there was very little money. He bought me a small solitaire engagement ring, and after 42 years of marriage, it's still the one I wear every day. He has 'threatened' over the years to buy me an upgrade, but don't want anything big and flashy. The ring I wore when I married him IS my wedding ring, and can't be replaced.

My wedding ring cost £20, we got married on a super budget. 3 years later we're in the position where we can have much more expensive rings, as we'd originally planned, but I've decided I don't want to change mine. It's the one he put on my finger with a promise and it means the world to me :0)

I gave my barely there tiny engagement diamond ring (which was all we could afford) to my daughter-in-law, who was excited to receive it. She never owned a real diamond before. It's not the size, but the meaning that counts.

My husband and I were both married before and kept our rings. We were completely broke and decided to use our old rings but we finally found a store that was going bankrupt (Consumer’s Distribution) and bought our wedding bands there (two for $100 CAD 35 years ago).

Yes to this wisdom. Spending money on rocks is stupid, make her happy by feeding a few hundred starving kids with the same money, or travel is good too. My spouse gave me his grandmas old ring because he knew I'm all about recycling and care less for gold which is one of the few industries still connected to slavery.

My hubby bought me a big diamond for our 30th anniversary, which I love. We still however both wear our original wedding bands we got in 1983 for $80 for the set. We’ll never replace them.

You were broke but could afford a 500(!!!) dollar ring? How is 500 dollars not a lot of money? If you're talking about a cheap ring because it's all you can afford, I would think you're talking about a 10 dollar ring, not 500 dollars, that is such a lot of money!

The expensive engagement ring/wedding band trend favors no one except the diamond/jewelry industries. No one needs either to be married or to prove their love. It would be great if we could all get over this idiotic practice.

One important reason why we, as humans, love wholesome content is because it helps build and reinforce hope. Psychologists really can’t overstate just how crucial it is for us to feel like there is a chance the future will be better. Interestingly, researchers have also found a connection between hope and creativity.

After all, making something new means committing to the possibility that his unknown thing will turn out well. Positive thinking, which can be toxic in a few instances, ultimately helps keep our minds active and helps us maintain our desire to keep trying.

One important part of hope isn't just “teaching” us about the possibility that good things can happen, it’s reminding us that they have happened. Unfortunately, our brains can be a bit selective with what they remember, leading to us “conveniently” forgetting the good things we’ve gone through and just focusing on the bad.

It is important to remember that hope can be problematic in large “doses” as some people, overwhelmed by positive emotions, can start to develop unrealistic goals and expectations, which will just come to harm them in the long run. This is why real stories are important, but they need to be “tempered” with the help of a specialist, like a therapist, if a person is really going through a depressive spell.

Researchers have also established a pretty strong connection between hope and not just mental health, but physical as well. People dealing with recovery after injury and illness tend to always do better if they demonstrate or report feelings of hope, versus feelings of intermittent sadness. So when you are looking at a list of wholesome images, perhaps bookmark it for a rainy day, it could actually help.

I have a few bits of my dad's writing from after his accident. His brain damage was catastrophic, but for the first few years after he came out of his coma, he could still write a word or two. He had multiple strokes after that, and died 21 years after his accident. I lost "my dad" on the day of his accident, but I treasure each bit I have left of him from before - and after - his accident.
