“Never Change, Japan!”: 40 Interesting And Wholesome Things About Japan That Prove It’s Unlike Anywhere Else In The World
InterviewWith its deeply rooted culture of politeness and quirky sense of humor recalling the funniest moments of our favorite anime, it's not surprising to learn why so many people are enchanted by Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun.
From ubiquitous vending machines and bizarre game shows to maid cafes, to us westerners, Japan is like a distant parallel universe with its own set of rules and customs. So to celebrate this culture, which has been showering us with its meme-like charm unlike any other, Bored Panda has compiled some of its weirdest cultural practices to show why the internet can't get enough of it.

When People Matter
Sigh. This kind of strike is illegal in most other countries. You either don't show up to work in protest or you do. Stop blaming workers for fighting for their rights with the only means available to them.
Load More Replies...Hey, FRANCE! Are you listening??? By making me miss going to work or my kid being in school doesn't make me want to support you as you're taking away my wages and my kids education because of your issues with the state. When you pull this c**p, all I can think is that there are thousands of refugees/ immigrants who are as qualified as you who would be happy to have your job and hc benefits too without complaint. Connards!
That´s how it should be done! Not just leaving us uninvolved bystanders hanging 😒
When I was a kid, we were coming back to NC from visiting family in NJ. The workers on the Jersey Turnpike were on strike, so they were in the tollbooths waving everyone through for free.
Japan, with its wholesome and occasionally bewildering traditions (like the centuries-old ‘crying baby sumo’ festival where toddlers win by bawling their hearts out), has been at the heart of the internet for, well, as long as we remember. Sometimes comical, other times borderline crazy or simply quirky - it's not hard to see why.
One of the things the Land of the Rising Sun is quite famous for is its vending machines. While there's nothing new about the concept itself (although, the idea that one of them could origami itself into a real-life Transformer is pretty tempting!), the fact that catches almost every tourist by surprise is: they are everywhere.
That's right. According to the most recent data, there are almost 4 million vending machines sprawling all around Japan, which means there's roughly 1 machine for every 30 people living in the country. What's even more impressive, some of them sell things like soup, shrimp broth, or even live rhinoceros beetles.
Old People In Japan Clean Up Radiation So The Younger Generation Won't Have To Expose Themselves To It
It might not cause a single cancer though, thankfully. Awesome though that they are working at that age for the betterment of the planet.
Load More Replies...All the while, people the same ages in the US literally vote against what is best for the younger generations, solely concerned with getting everything they want, making no changes to their wasteful ways, and attempting to force the rest of the nation to live according to their fúcked interpretation of the bible. Good job, Japan, at building a nation of people that value life as it is, here and now and not a magical, fictitious afterlife in the clouds.
This is admirable but if the USA posted a similar story many of you would be "rheeeing" bout how Americans think old people have less value and are disposable. :)
This would NEVER happen in America. They'd hire young people, pay them $12/hr and expect them to pay a $5000 deductible before insurance will cover their cancer treatment.
Load More Replies...While this is a wonderful story, the fact that it's there in the first place is a real shame.
If some of you have been wondering where Studio Ghibli, the beloved animation studio responsible for such classics as "My Neighbor Totoro", gets its inspiration from, part of the truth lies in Japan's deep-rooted traditions that can leave most us westerners amusingly baffled.
Take, for example, Namahage. Occasionally called 'Japanese Krampus', this century-old custom takes place in the northern region of Japan called Akita and is all about demonically-dressed men visiting homes to scare the bejeezus out of children.
While it sounds like something most people would call the police for, it's actually a beloved tradition with parents preparing special meals and waiting until evil spirits are warded off from their homes. Weirdly enough, even children are usually excited about this New Year tradition.

Good job again, Japan! People can accidentally go to a wrong location and make friends, not have bullets sprayed at them.
Lessons for the low low price of chasing away loneliness. Sounds like a lovely trade.
Lucky for you as the Japanese in general are, in reality, far more racist than Americans are often portrayed as being. "Japan lacks any law which prohibits racial, ethnic, or religious discrimination. The country also has no national human rights institutions. Non-Japanese individuals in Japan often face human rights violations that Japanese citizens may not. In recent years, non-Japanese media has reported that Japanese firms frequently confiscate the passports of guest workers in Japan, particularly unskilled laborers." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_Japan
Japan, Just Japan
You mean a BALL, a stupid BALL, didn't turn the whole crowd into mouth breathing savages who all start fighting like their lives depend on a BALL?!?
You forgot to mention - fight for it, then pull it out of a child's hands, make a spectacle out of it, take a dump in a parking slot, go home and brag to everyone about it and then sell it. For a fiver :D

And so it explains why more than thousands of people flock to r/neverchangejapan every week to share and enjoy the peculiarities the Land of the Rising Sun has to offer. Ranging from seriously impressive synchronized walking competitions to wacky commercials and Kit-Kat flavors you couldn't make in your wildest dreams, people gather here to appreciate Japan "for all of its funny, weird, stupid, creative and amazing moments!"
Cafe In Japan Gives An Oportunity To Paralyzed People To Feel Fulfilled
My friend just got back from Japan and went to this cafe said it was amazing- the workers just want to feel like they are doing something

Unfortunately the birth rate in smaller villages in Japan is plummeting. I have read about villages that have zero children and will never have any unless younger people move there from the large cities. The Japanese population may rebound after a massive drop over the next 3 decades. The idea that Japanese culture could become extinct in a century is terrible. The world has lost enough cultures over the centuries and I personally do not wish to see one as old and distinct as Japan disappear.

GRRRR. So much yes. I once had the conversation with a friend in the movie theater. Leaves trash in seat. I point out there is a trash can by the door as we leave. "It's okay, they hire people to clean up the theater". Of course they do you selfish a-hole. They have to because people like you leave their trash behind. To understand what makes this online community, which just recently celebrated its 50k users milestone, so entertaining, Bored Panda reached out to u/VanillaLoaf, who's been moderating r/neverchangejapan for 2 years and counting, with u/MaxwellIsSmall, the subreddit's founder, helping out as well.
"It's a fairly quiet sub due to the niche nature of the content," u/VanillaLoaf told us. "The vast majority of members are respectful of each other and play by the rules, so there isn't too much conflict to deal with." The only issues this subreddit, which just recently celebrated its 50k users milestone, run into, then, are pretty mild. Besides mistaking Korean/Chinese content with Japanese ones, breaching the third rule of the subreddit ("posts MUST be entirely associated with Japan," it reads), occasionally someone tries to throw some anti-Japanese sentiments ("that's very rare") that get instantly taken down by u/VanillaLoaf.

The Japanese fans have an international reputation for tidying up the stadia.
Exactly. They're becoming famous for this. Seeing Japanese fans helping to clean up the stadium is just what you need for a bit of feelgood.
Load More Replies...That is awesome. But does anyone here know if it is actually the players who clean the room, or do they have people to do it, like special members of the extended team? Regardless of the answer, I'm asking because I'm always at awe of such degree of respect.
Japan exudes classiness, empathy, and respect. The United States does not! It’s pretty simple and can be applied to pretty much every one of these examples!
The Japanese culture, though, is far less forgiving and extremely strict across the classes and age groups compared to Americans. If you make a mistake-in class, at work-you get shamed by your peers and superiors and must offer supplication to everyone you might have offended. No, as much as I admire the Japanese people and their culture, they DO NOT exude classiness or empathy, only obedience in the guise of respect.

Load More Replies..."I'm not entirely sure why I'm personally drawn to Japanese life/culture", u/VanillaLoaf told us. While he's not a hardcore anime/manga or Japanese music fan, as one might suspect; this moderator is an avid gamer with a special place in his heart for Japan's beloved video game mascot Mario, who just happened to look for Japanese content on the platform at the time.
The things that u/VanillaLoaf appreciates about this one-of-a-kind culture, however, is Japan's clockwork functionality. "My time in Japan changed me as a person and made me appreciate the simple things in life that Japan does particularly well - cleanliness, politeness, things actually working, etc.," he explained, joking that his home country could learn a thing or two from it. Although, he suspects that most people are drawn to Japan because "it's a little bit mad when viewed through westerners' eyes (and people enjoy odd/crazy content)."
A Tree In Japan Being Removed (With Roots Being Painstakingly Protected) And Being Saved And Moved (Instead Of Being Cleared For Road Widening)
Rootballing trees to move them isn't that uncommon across the world, we even have specific rootballing machines for the purpose. This is some lovely rootballing though.
This didn’t happen over night either, guessing at least 1-2 years to let the roots form a ball once cut. Hats off to the people behind this move :)
We should do more of this. I've seen some pretty big trees in America being chopped down just for road widening.
When Pope Francis Visted Japan Last Year, He Was Gifted A Custom Anime Robe, Which He Wore
Francis isn't like other Popes. He literally loves everyone not just Catholics. He is a good example of what a religious leader should be. Unbiased and understanding to all faiths.
Publicly wearing the robe makes the Pope out to be pretty great, too.
Is there a large Catholic population in Japan? Was he there to convert the masses? Wanted to see the cherry blossoms? I'm curious why the pope visited Japan.
My dad is Filipino and grew up Catholic. My mom is protestant. I would consider my upbringing more spiritual than religious. One thing that we all agree with is that Pope Francis is a beautiful and loving man who is the most welcoming and accepting Catholic leader to every hold the position. I'm thankful for his wise guidance.
This Latte Art Made Me Chuckle
While sharing the same sentiment about Japan's clockwork efficiency, Andres Zuleta, the founder of Boutique Japan, a travel company that personalizes travelers' trips to the Land of the Rising Sun, says it was the feeling of security that surprised him the most. "I'd moved from New York City, and honestly I'd never thought of NYC as dangerous, but I was used to always being hyper-aware of my surroundings," Zuleta told Bored Panda via email. "Yet, after a few weeks of living in Tokyo, I realized one day that I'd stopped the default habit of looking over my shoulder, as I just didn't feel a sense of danger anywhere I went."
Being recognized as a top travel specialist for Japan by Condé Nast Traveler magazine since 2020, Andres' fascination with this country, like most things in life, started almost accidentally. "I actually didn't know much about Japan before college, but based on a friend's recommendations, I ended up in courses on Japanese literature and the Japanese language," said Zuleta. Not only did this become a lifelong passion, but it also inspired Andres to move to the other side of the world, to Tokyo, where he got to experience the culture firsthand.

Having had the privilege of creating many custom tours for his clients (based on his exploration of the country, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, and people's requests), Andres says the harmony between the hyper-modern and deeply traditional cultural elements never fails to leave a lasting impression on visitors.
"In some ways, Japan is far more modern (and functional!) than places like the US or Europe, but traditional culture runs incredibly deep and is very much alive in contemporary Japan," he explained. So whether you're a fan of anime or ancient tea ceremonies, there's something for everyone in this incredible country that's truly the best of both worlds.
Why Is Japan Just So Great
Although it does not really compare, a new Bypass Rd near where I live has possum/lizard bridges, so they don't get squooshed trying to cross.
A few years back, some old rail bridges over a major highway near me were converted to green-bridges so animals could cross the highway safely. It was more focused on getting deer off the road (a major issue around here), but it was the same basic idea. I always thought it was a great way to reuse an otherwise derelict bridge.
Load More Replies...The Japanese aren't the only ones who respect conservation and migration. The French have "toad tunnels", Christmas Island has a "red crab bridge". Again, I 💓 Japan, but this conservation technique is not unique.
This isn't about migration though. The trough just catches and holds the turtles until somebody comes by for a monthly check, and then they send them to an aquarium. It's more to keep the trains running without disruption than helping the turtles get across. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2015/11/30/national/jr-west-aquarium-solve-turtle-linked-rail-disruptions/
Load More Replies...The issue was that the turtles were getting crushed in the railway switches, causing the switches to get stuck out of position. If not caught in time by operators this could definitely cause a derailment, but more likely it would cause a delay while rail workers fixed the switch.

Solving The Problem Of Eating A Burger With Dignity
I'm not sure if it is still a thing (was 80s) but it was considered bad manners to show the inside of your mouth. So in restaurants if someone was using a toothpick they would use the other hand to either hold up a napkin like a little curtain or sometimes just a flat hand to block the view.
IF I use a toothpick in public, I cover my mouth with my hand or a napkin. I'm not Japanese, nor was I raised in any of the Pacific Rim countries. I was just taught as a child that using a toothpick should always be done discreetly.

Because, as the advertisement states, it assumes that Japanese women should be ashamed to enjoy eating a big mouthful of food openly. And I understand that the Japanese culture around the image of how women should behave and viewed in public has changed over the last few decades, but when this advert was printed, likely in the 1980'-90's, women were still encouraged to be "seen and not heard", and only seen and heard in a dignified manner, which, gorging on a burger in public was not dignified.

it's an honor thing. in the yakuza, if a member commits a grievous sin or offense, they will cut off one of their fingers. it's like an eye for an eye kind of thing.

I am thinking that its just a statue of some kind as opposed to someone actually wearing it, trying to pick leaves

Oh how I wish I knew Japanese so I could visit japan like the little weeb I am.
Nick, go visit Japan and every other country that you want. Don't let the language barrier be a reason not to go. Especially with the advent of Google Translate, it's not perfect, but it helps immensely. Now off you go, Nick! Adventure!
Load More Replies...This is fake. The sentence is grammatically incorrect. The letters aren’t written by a native Japanese .
I know; I've never seen Japanese script written by a native speaker that wasn't utterly perfect (how do you do it?!?!?!?!). It looks like I wrote it, lol

Japanese Hotel Apologies For One Minute Internet Stoppage At 4am
Memories of standing at a train platform in some tiny mountain town and my boyfriend laughing as he listened to an announcement. When I asked him why he was laughing he said they were apologizing *profusely* that the train was going to be 2 minutes late. And sure enough, it was precisely two minutes late.
I'm pretty sure if its more than a couple of minutes late you can get a chit that explains the delay to give to your boss.

Load More Replies...Japan is beautiful, easily accessible once on island, and polite....during the daytime. I have been over 5 times for 2 week to month long stays and have family that live in Japan. Japanese culture is very racist. People of other races are looked down on and good luck integrating into a family. They are very vocal (per their culture) to criticize or insult those they see as ugly, fat, or different. Otaku is thrown around a lot in anime/manga circles as a badge of honor but honestly in culture they are considered the creeps and cringe. Japan is so institutionalized racist that my Hispanic friends who moved for work were advised and eventually relented to just allow their Japanese realtor go to showings for an apartment bc they were being denied over and over. These things I state aren't new or small instances, read forums that show the image of Japan behind the mask and many many people share these same experiences. I also didn't bring up how they treat mixed citizens.
I call the way Japanese treat foreigners polite hostility. The racism, hive mind/voluntary communism and not open but still very apparent superiority complex makes me uncomfortable there. Some admirable traits like cleaning up after themselves and low criminality are not going to overwrite that.

Are you sure this isn't just a problem that exists everywhere and Japan being one of the few to take active steps to stop it?

just make changes on the suicide rates and the sexual harassment and japan will become heaven on earth
I truly hope that changes. Japan has such a brutal work culture and so many young people face constant pressure to fit society’s norms.
