Sometimes a wholesome experience is just around the corner. All we have to do is let it into our lives.
On April 30, author Mitali Perkins published a tweet, describing the unexpected encounter she had with a random teen. "I was walking alone yesterday when an unsmiling teen on a bike whizzed by," Perkins wrote. "Our eyes met. He circled back, and I couldn't help bracing myself for our encounter. 'Hey, lady,' he said gruffly. 'Five ducklings. Under the culvert ahead.' Then he did a wheelie and sped off."
The tweet instantly blew up (as it should) and already has over 138K likes. But most importantly, it has inspired other Twitter users to share their own pleasant moments with strangers. Below are some of the sweetest ones.

That is the cutest thing. I am in seventh grade, I wish someone did that for me
What an exceptional young man. I remember being in the 7th grade. I'm sad to say that the guys were boors.
So do I. I wouldn't have had the presence of mind to do something like this. I have a lot of empathy, but at that age I probably, sadly, would have been either snickering or clueless as to what was going on.

Honestly I kinda wanna hug everyone who's ever been a marine or in the army. They deserve it for serving this country.
Perkins said she didn't know what to make of the situation at first. "The teenager seemed angry and there was nobody else around," she told Bored Panda. "We were separated racially and generationally, so I wasn't sure of his intentions. I was on guard, that's for sure." Luckily, everything turned out for the best.
"Encounters with 'strangers and aliens' across borders of culture, age, and power are often moments where I receive God's presence and love," Perkins explained. "These divinely human connections have become a private collection of delight and I go on the hunt for them now."
Owl's are sneaky. I was standing on my back deck one night, basically staring at the sky, when two Great Horned owls decided to have a tussle about ten feet in front of me. They hit each other, and made the loudest noise. I almost fell down out of surprise. My wife came running out of the house saying "did you just murder someone?"
I have a grumpy neighbour I tend to keep my distance from. We encountered each other very early one morning as I was having a cuppa, listening to to early birdsong, and he was leaving for work. When he found out I like birds he took me into his front yard to proudly show an owl thats been roosting there and we became friends
Similar thing happened to me in New York, where I was on a bus heading back to my hostel. It was getting dark, and the bus didn't actually stop that close to my hostel. An older man asked where I was going, and got off the bus with me and walked me back to the street my hostel was on (it wasn't too far), making sure we avoided areas he said were dangerous
Kasa, same, in Spain. We got lost exploring Madrid, and couldn't find the hostel at all! We finally stopped and asked a street vendor, and be kindly left big wife at their booth, and led us safely all the way there. He wouldn't accept anything we offered as recompense

Unfortunately little girls also live in unsafe neighbourhoods, and can be out on the streets late enough to escort the post pub crowd home :-(
Load More Replies...But what allows us to break the boundaries of our differences? To trust people outside our circle and form meaningful bonds, even if just for a few seconds? Well, one study suggests it's their looks
"We found that attractive subjects gain a 'beauty premium' in that they are trusted at higher rates, but we also found a 'beauty penalty' when attractive people do not live up to expectations," said Rick Wilson, the Herbert S. Autrey Professor of Political Science and Professor of Psychology and Statistics at Rice University. Wilson is the co-author, with Catherine Eckel, professor of economics at the University of Texas-Dallas, of a study titled 'Judging a Book by Its Cover: Beauty and Expectations in the Trust Game.'

Some of the boys I know would have mistreated the mama duck and her babies.
He told her he was concerned for her safety and why he was staying so that she wouldn't be creeps out by him sitting and staring, then he kept his distance and left her alone so she knew he was genuine. Sounds like a great guy.
Sure does. I rather thought the clue was 'way over here' that he was ensuring she felt safe but I guess some people see negative in something positive.

This is what we should be doing for each other. Looking out for one another.
Very clever action of that man, staying by to protect, and keeping his distance not to seem scary AND telling her his intention, so she would not be scared by feeling stalked. Best reaction ever, sensitive to what many women fear when out.
The researchers took 206 students from Virginia Tech, Rice University, and North Carolina A&T to participate in a two-part experiment to examine trust and attractiveness. In the first part, subjects were photographed and took part in a series of trust games. In the second part, another group of subjects evaluated the photographs for attractiveness. Researchers controlled for gender, race, facial expression, glasses and jewelry so those factors did not enter into the decision.
Each person posed for four photographs — two neutral and two smiling — and then he or she picked one to be used for the game. Each participant was also given 10 'lab dollars' to exchange during the game. Then they were shown photographs of other students and told to send any amount they wanted to each of them. The experimenter then tripled the amount and gave it to the second student. Then the recipient decided how much to return to the sender. Students kept the money that was exchanged.
Sikhs are amazing. They’re the first ones to step up during an emergency. Current deadly second wave of COVID is devastating India and so many Sikh organisations are stepping up with free meds, oxygen, even crematory services at risk to their lives. Truly amazing belief system.

I once pulled into a Target parking lot, got out and noticed that the minivan next to me was running with the sliding door open, and no one was inside. Turned the car off, shut the door, left the keys on the seat with a note saying "Your car was running with the door open. Be careful!" Car was still there when I left, assuming was a distracted parent (there were a couple of kids car seats in the back.
It may have been a distracted parent, but that whole situation seemed "off" to me. I would've done the same, but also alerted the manager of the store or security. Maybe I'm too negative, but my mind automatically went to an abduction.

Load More Replies...In the second part of the experiment, another group of students evaluated the photos for 15 traits, including attractiveness. In the trust games, on average, more money was sent to attractive people. Likewise, trusting attractive people was justified because they tended to reciprocate with higher amounts of money.
"Attentiveness to attractiveness may be embedded as part of our cognitive apparatus," Wilson said. "There are evolutionary reasons why humans might be attentive to attractiveness, including that historically it signaled good genes, substantial parental investment or status."
Years ago, maybe 18-20 years ago, I got lost in Philadelphia for work. They had community helpers who were easily identifiable, and were just people on the street (they appeared to work for the city) who could help if you were lost or looking for a place to eat or shop or whatever. I never felt so safe in a big city! I wonder if they still have that.

Perkins had been on a solo retreat just before encountering her new friend, Kevin. The author saw him again the next day when she came back to try and find the ducklings. "During those three days in silence, I'd been wondering if my presence on social media was useful in any way to the planet. I came home, met Kevin, and posted the story. And then I was overcome by the string of beautiful stories that people began to share."
Reading the tweets one after the other was really meaningful to Perkins. "There's a story of Jesus interacting with a small boy and a hungry crowd. The child offered five fish and two loaves, and I imagine Jesus taking them with a smile as he began to feed many people. I felt an affirmation of my small contribution of words to the world—that they, too, can be used to bring sustenance in some way even if flawed and simple. Keep writing, Mitali, I heard, even in a sometimes disheartening venue like Twitter. And so I shall," she said.
So is your comment. Sadly though you didn't put it on Twitter where she could see it.

While in college it snowed one Sunday night and I had no shovel (snow came early that year) a group of the football players who lived in the dorm LIFTED my car over the pile of snow and onto the road!
I’m an idiot and in college I drove over the parking block and my car high centered so I was stuck, a guy came out of class and saw, then proceeded to walk around my car look under it, then put it in neutral and picked the front end up by himself and push it backward! I thought huh, my car must be pretty light, when no one was looking I tried to see how high I could lift it and it didn’t so much as budge. I don’t know how he did that.
I had an experience like this in Barrie, Ontario. My car went intoi a snowdrift at a stoplight and I was blocking traffic. Four guys--looked like they were mad--got out of one of the cars behind me--yelling and gesturing. Turns out they were just arguing about who would be at the front or the back. All four of them LIFTED my car out of the snowbank and high-fived each other.

I don't know about USA but in Poland skateparks are usually restricted to older teenagers and adults ( I think 14+). The reason behind it is that this is the place where people perform dangerous maneuvers and it's dangerous. A 16yr old boy from my area sadly has died because of such child. A little girl on the scooter drove in front of him, when he was mid-air. He would have killed her, had he landed where she was, so he quickly pulled away and crashed to death. The parents of the girl were charged for his death, since they were the ones who brought her there and didn't ensure safety. It's a tragic story, I'm mentioning it to raise awareness of the risks of bringing your "very early learning kid" to a skatepark full of "big scary teen skaters". Please, don't bring your children there, unless there is some beginners zone separately. Also, always wear your helmet, even if it doesn't look cool https://www.o2.pl/informacje/kalisz-tragiczna-smierc-16-latka-w-skateparku-rodzina-ujawnia-now

At a festival 20 years ago and they had a massive high Vert ramp. Up goes this kid, about 10 years old. He is so unsure and clearly hesitant. He stood up there for half an hour, by then about 20 of the older kids had gone up to help him and encourage him. Still unsure. Half an hour later, the entire festival is behind him, about 3000 people. Just on sunset, with his tears of fear glinting on his cheeks, he lets go. The crowd roars! He didn't land it but that didn't matter. He had what would have seemed to him, the world behind him.
Had similar thing with my young boy who was eager to learn and practice but very new and young. Big group of teens who did not look like the well mannered type and lead by a big boy with a hardened look to him quickly took him under their wing and were so kind to show him some moves.

Ok, now I have a bunch of questions about watermelon juice. Some of them might be dumb. Like is it literally the water squeezed from watermelons, or has it progressed to the point of being processed with flavorings added? How popular is it? Do ppl mostly make it at home or buy it?
I have had some at a summer camp..it was literally just juiced watermelon with pulp removed.

If you ever put the wrong fuel in your car DO NOT start it up. It's a fairly simple fix for the AA if they just need to drain the tank. If you start the car it depends which way round you've screwed up. Diesel in a petrol car may mean you need new spark plugs but otherwise it's not too bad, but it is a bit harder to make sure it's all out once you've sent it into the engine rather than just sitting in the tank. Petrol in a diesel ... if you've started it you're going to need a tow to the nearest garage and then you get to find out how much damage you did and how painful it's going to be to your wallet. Either way if you don't start it, you'll be on your way a lot faster and without seriously lightening your wallet.
Also the nozzle of the diesel pump is bigger, it won't fit for petrol tank....
I went hiking with my husband and some people stopped us to observe a bald eagle. That was awesome and we returned the favor for the next approaching couple
Oh my goodness I love that. I do this to every person I see walking a dog. But I have a fairly non-threatening appearance and I’m feminine. But dogs are cute to everyone!!
I was sitting outside a store holding my dog when a few teenage boys came up. I started freaking out but then they just started petting my dog and telling her how beautiful she was
I visit my daughter in California and of course dogs are more widely accepted in public out there than a lot of states. So it is absolutely the best time of my life to cuddle every dog I see~after I asked the owner of course. And I tell each and everyone of them how beautiful they are.
What is so scary about teenage boys? They are usually pretty nice, compared to what they grow up to be. I don't talk with them unless it is necessary.

I politely decline saying I have to catch the last metro and I also am in a committed relationship. He says "Okay. But is it fine if I walk you to the metro? It's late." I don't live in the US, raccoons don't exist where I live. Are they dangerous or aggressive?
Generally they’re not aggressive unless she’s a mother with kits. However if they become used to people as a source of food they can be aggressive when encountering a human that has no food for them. Their teeth and claws are sharp so they can cause damage, the main risk though is they are a main vector species for rabies. So if you give them their space and leave them be they typically won’t bother you.

Same thing happened to me. I was traveling and stopped for a bite to eat and to get out of the car, and I was sitting alone in the restaurant, a little girl pointed at me and said to her mother, "I want purple hair just like hers." I smiled and waved at her. I hope she gets purple hair.
It was me. (Or at least it could've been me. I was a little girl who asked her mother the same thing.) And I did.
I guess it's kind of a story where person finally realises their own bias/racism. She seems to be saying "I was assuming white boys would be the helpful ones, but it turned out they weren't, and your race doesn't determine how good of a person you are". I understood this tweet as a "How I realised I was racist" story

I had broken my leg during a demonstration at a conference and had decided to fly home instead of toughing it out on the 3 day car ride. I'm sitting at the flight gate, exhausted, almost crying from pain, in a rickety airport wheelchair. They call for pre-boarding and I'm struggling to manage my bag, my crutches, and the chair and not making very much progress. No one helps, didn't seem like they even noticed. Next thing I know I hear a 'hmmph' from behind me and suddenly an elderly woman was handing me her cane with a "Hold this for me, will you dear?" Then she proceeded to push my chair all the way to the plane and helped me get balanced on my crutches to get to my seat. The best part was right before we started down the gangway she turned around, looked at the packed boarding area, and loudly said "You should all be ashamed of yourselves! She's clearly in need of help and y'all are so self absorbed that a 96yo women is the only one that stepped up! Shame!!"
I hope all these wonderful stories help us to stop judging by appearance. Even for a day.

I have two such stories both involving old ladies: 1. You know they say Parisians are rude, right? I was in Paris on a metro train which terminated unexpectedly and the driver announced we all had to leave and board another train on a different platform. I couldn't speak French well enough so was a bit confused until this immaculately dressed old lady (roughly 80 years old) saw me, grabbed me by my hand, walked me to the other platform and made sure I got on the right train. 2. The other one was when I was flying to the US from Rome and was sat next to an elderly Italian lady who, it turned out, was absolutely terrified of flying. She was talking to me all the time in Italian (I don't speak Italian) but I just let her speak as I could tell it gave her a bit of a relief... Just before take off she grabbed my arm with both hands and snuggled up to me so that her head was on my chest. After take off, the flight attendants told me that I was doing a great job looking after my Grandma ;-)
I have one.. when I was pregnant with my son I went trough a difficult time as I was alone and a recovering addict. I quit with everything the moment I knew I was pregnant. Never used again. Well, my son had a habit to be super sleepy in my belly. So every now and then I had to go to the hospital to check is heartbeat. I would sit there for hours and one time I was talking to a nurse about my life and the pregnancy. A few months after I gave birth I went to the hospital and there was this same nurse. Getting exited and telling to her collegue how proud she was of me. Bless this women.
Its latenite and winter,, I had just pulled through my apt gates and came to a sudden stop. My lights had reflected off an black, elderly gentleman laying on the ground in the middle of the road. I stopped my car and ran over to help him up. I noticed he was frail and had a catheter hanging so I called the paramedics. They took him to the hospital because he knocked his head when he fell and was bleeding a lil. The whole time I'm helping this gentleman, a random neighbor had parked in front on my running car(and my driver door was still open) and watched over my car while redirecting traffic around it. 🥰
I've had many, but one of my favorites happened 10+ years ago. I was walking around the block with my son, who was about 4y/o, and was going through a "hugging" phase, where he would basically run towards people and hug them close to their knees (his height). Well, this one day, I spot a teenager, and I get a sick feeling and said 'he's gonna mug me' (four times I've had that feeling, I'd been right), we lock eyes, and my son runs towards him to hug him, and I tell him "L, don't bother him, he might not like that!' in a very neutral and calm voice. As expected, my son ignores me, hugs the teen who proceeds to pick my son up in his arms and smiled at him, then smiled at me and said "lucky your kid is cute", and went on his way. Turns out he *worked* a few blocks from my house, mugging people. We'd pass each other on a regular basis and always stopped to chat.
Whoa... how scary to have been mugged so many times! What city/country was that in?
Load More Replies...In the 1980s, I was travelling around France and Italy, visiting friends studying abroad. In one city, I arrived to find my friend out. A beautiful day, I sat in a local square and played my guitar. Soon, some teenagers came over to me, and asked me (in French) where my money was. I was a bit worried, until one boy took off his cap, and put it on the floor. They thought I was busking! I said I was just playing for fun, and they looked horrified. But then they all sat down around me, and the guitar started passing around, with everyone singing or playing something. Twice, the boy with the cap went round to other people in the square, and it was clear they were being generous. The boy came back and showed the contents to his friend, and they walked off with the money! But after 20 minutes, they came back, with bread, cheese, meat and bottles of water, and we all had a picnic, there in the square.
More of this kind of thing please Chief Panda. There is already enough of the Karen/sex war/US bashing/other unpleasantness abounding
I was heading to training for a new job. We were told from the beginning that if we missed a day, we'd be let go. I'm driving on the freeway when suddenly my van starts pouring white smoke. I pull off..turns out a coolant hose burst. A man stopped in his work truck, proceeds to take the hose off, cut it at the break and re-attached it. Then he put some more coolant and water in my van. I offered him money for it. He said "That's ok. You remind me of my daughter and, if she were in trouble, I'd want someone to stop and help her." He was a great influence as I've stopped to help many people with disabled vehicles since then. I'm just sad I never got his name.
So many positive teens!! I was in a burger joint some time ago, and a group of young people were celebrating an 18th birthday. The young man explained to all his friends individually and in the open why exactly he loved them and why they are wonderful people. I got so warm and fuzzy inside :)
I was temping in the City Hall area of New York City when I was hit with a high fever (before Covid). It was 105 by the time I got to my house in NJ. With the fever I got confused and couldn't find the subway. A man asked me if I needed help. He walked me to the subway. There was a woman coming in and he asked her of she was going uptown. She said yes and was informed if my situation. She brought me downstairs and helped me onto the crowded train. She yelled to ask if someone was taking the train to Port Authority. Another woman said yes. She was informed of my situation and helped me off the train onto the transfer. She then asked the crowd if anyone was headed toward my terminal and a man said yes. He was informed of my situation and walked to my bus stop. There was a woman standing there. She was informed of my situation. She helped me onto the bus and sat with me until we reached my stop where my husband was waiting to take me home. New Yorkers are the kindest people on earth
I have two such stories both involving old ladies: 1. You know they say Parisians are rude, right? I was in Paris on a metro train which terminated unexpectedly and the driver announced we all had to leave and board another train on a different platform.
