Apparently some 2-year-olds on here can too. (But also yes, 4-year-olds typically can speak in full sentences, that’s actually normal. Their knowledge of words is limited, but they can still speak in full sentences.)

Kids have tons of extra neurons looking for a job to do before time runs out and nature offs them for failure to launch. How many die before nature gets antsy and cleans house is entirely the job of nurture. Four year old can learn multiple languages fluently, and form sentences in each bc they have the tools in their head to do so. They just need the right environment and mental stimulation before it’s too late and nature changes the rules… at around 3 years old. If a healthy normal kid can’t form sentences by the time they’re 4, it’s because they had no one to talk to or read to them, etc. In my experience as an American, all the yapping about saving kids or putting them first I have heard all my life is never really about them at all. If we want to “save” the children, maybe we start by saving the neurons.

A lot of them, actually. By one and a half or so, they should have a vocabulary of about 50 individual words. By age two, they should start stringing those words together in short statements and picking up more words. Children ideally should begin using full sentences by age three. And by age four, should be about to hold a genuine conversation, including the ability to relate thoughts and stories. Anything less is considered developmentally slow.

One of my sisters could speak in small sentences by 6 months. The joke was she started talking early and never stopped. A convo with her is usually "I only have a minute" and half an hour later you're trying to figure out where you went wrong. Another sister absolutely refused to talk to anyone until she was 6 unless she deemed it absolutely necessary. My daughter was the same. Once she hit 6 she would talk anyone's ear off and surprised the family members who thought she needed speech therapy when she was 3.
