If you don’t have a pet in your life, then all of the cute pics of animals online may fool you into thinking that animals are just that - cute little ornaments that you have to feed. Pets are so much more than that, however, and any pet owner will tell you that they can be full of love and friendship. We searched various online communities high and low to bring you some of the most wholesome pics of animals that we’ve ever seen.

Scientifically, there are a few different concepts governing how we form relationships with the animals we love. One is their level of domestication – the more domesticated an animal is, the likelier it is to be able to form affectionate social relationships with humans. Another is anthropomorphism – our predilection for assigning human motivations and ideas to uniquely animal behaviors.

Dogs live in packs that have a strict peckingorder when it comes to food. The top dogs get to eat first. All the others better wait for their designated turn, or else.

Human relationships can be complex, so arguably, inter-species friendships can be even more complex. Instead of people with different personalities, perspectives and experiences, we have all of that plus different species with different wiring and capabilities.

I am super blessed, I live in Cape Town, right next to a coastal nature sanctuary and have a pied crow couple living in a huge tree outside my front door. They have lived in that tree for a few years now and yes I give them treats. And at dusk I have tiny fruit bats that come for the insects and put on an aerial ballet most nights. My friend's daughter loves to pop in after work to come and enjoy the show. The crows and fruit bats are a tonic for any tired soul.

My older cat passed away a few years ago, and my younger cat was absolutely despondent. She would hardly eat or drink, and only came out from under the bed to use the litter box. Vet suggested adopting a friend for her. I was beyond depressed as well and NOT ready for a new cat, but I didn't want to put my little cat on antidepressants, so adopted a kitten from the shelter so she (3 y/o at the time) wouldn't be lonely. It warms my heart to see her so much happier now. I know that she still misses her sister. Much like the cat in this post, she sits and looks at a photo of her often. Cats are more like us than they are given credit for. <3

One of the most recognizable pillars of human-animal relationships (though certainly not the only one) is domestication. But how does domestication happen? We’re all familiar with the quasi-scientific story of wolves scavenging human waste and somehow gradually transforming into modern dogs, but how did that actually happen? One long-term scientific experiment in Siberia has shown (and continues to show) us what that may have looked like.

In 1959, Dmitri Belyaev initiated a long-term experiment that would use silver foxes to explore how domestication may have occurred in other mammals from generation to generation. Generation after generation of captive wild foxes were selected for breeding based on signs of agreeability to human contact. Within the earlier generations, the selection processes were as simple as whether or not the fox chose to bite an assistant’s gloved hand or whether or not they could be trained to eat from an assistant’s hand.

The only reason they're orphaned is due to a**e***e humans destroying their habitat and killing their mothers. We should be ashamed. I hope most of us are. If it wasn't for us, there'd be no need for 'us' to teach the poor things the normal ways of being an orangutan

In a few generations, a broad range of surprising separate genetic changes began to take shape. In addition to behavioral tendencies, the foxes began to develop floppy ears, piebald fur patterns, adolescent features, and other characteristics that we associate today with cute and domesticated animals. And, most importantly, these once-wild and -fearful foxes were now friendly and eager to please, some even learning to play fetch.

Animals can detect physical changes in human bodies, as well as the physical manifestations of mental and emotional changes, even before the human is aware of them. That’s why, when you’re happy, they celebrate with you, and when you’re sad, they stick with you to comfort you, keep an eye on you, and be sure you’re OK. So don’t even try to say our pets don’t love us, tune into us, understand us, and try to help us when they can tell something is up.

As we’ve mentioned, domestication is not the only way that (once-wild) animals can form friendships with people. Some non-domesticated animals can also become friends with people under certain circumstances. One correlation is intelligence. Corvids, dolphins, and other intelligent creatures are regularly reported to understand human cues and form friendly, if not dependent, relationships. In other cases, wild animals with a natural tendency to form parental fixations or social relationships, like ducks, have formed social connections with people who’ve fit into their existing wild social behaviors.

He would press his body against the ground to get as low as he possibly could so he could be on their level and boop them with his nose to get them to play with him. It was the cutest thing ever!

Another common form of loose social relationship is when wild animals learn not to fear people based on simple reward psychology. In many national parks, for example, rangers caution visitors against feeding wild animals for precisely this reason. If visitors feed animals they see, the animals will learn not to fear people and to expect food from them, which can lead to dangerous situations.

This reminds me, my mother worked the last twenty five years or her nursing career until age 75 in the Alzheimer's Unit at a local nursing home. There were two things which cheered and brightened the resident's day more than ANY other thing, that is someone visiting with either children or a pet. If you have a pet who is pretty well behaved, they need not be a trained therapy dog or anything like this, just obviously house broken, well trained, they will listen, talk to the home about bringing in your pet, especially a nice dog to visit with the residents. I can't explain how much they love it.

Rock baby has since graduated to the flight enclosure and is learning adult eagle skills so s/he can be released into the wild. Murphy done good. He's now considered an appropriate foster dad for for future eaglets in need.

One of the interesting parts of Murphy's story is that he is a senior eagle that has never raised chicks before. He became so protective of his rock egg he had to be separted from the other eagles at the sanctuary. He continued to nurture his rock after moving to isolation. Soon after, an eagle chick in need of care arrived at the sanctuary. The keepers slowly attempted to give it to Murphy. Murphy went full Dad-mode and cared for the chick. The young bird is now preparing to return to the wild after Murphy's excellent care.

Many of the same ideas work for non-human inter-species friendships. Domestic animals are already well-equipped to form friendly and loving relationships with both people and animals, but what about inter-species friendships in the wild?

My pupper was afraid of men when I adopted him at 2 years old. A friend of mine won him over so now Buster happily demands pets from everyone!

My fam got a dog this way. Had one that was we believe was a pit/rot mix, who was in a highly abusive home - man of the house beat her and at the very least his wife/gf, and possibly a kid. Rescue had trouble placing her in a new home as she wouldn’t go near men. My stepdad leant down to peak under the table at her, and ended up with a face full of dog spit. She, of course, came home with them. She ended up loving the whole fam, got better with the majority of men, and was particularly protective of women. Awesome dog, overall.

People who hurt animals will end up hurting people. My crazy roommate beat me up. I had noticed Animals were afraid of him. That should have clued me in to the fact he was a socipath.

Many such friendships are built on naturally occurring mutualistic tendencies. These are cases where certain species rely on one another to gain an advantage in their environment and both benefit from the exchange.

This is a defensive maneuver, that guy is too close to the sloth. The guy should be glad he didn't get bit by the sloth. Additionally, interactions like this both stress the sloth out and normalize getting too close to wildlife. If you really love sloths, stay at a respectable distance, leave them alone, and leave all interactions to the professionals! Follow @theslothinstitute, @slothconservation for more info.

You may be able to place wild animals in "petting" scenario's or even sell them as pets, but at the end of the day they are still wild animals, not cute playthings for us to exploit.

One example is the oxpecker, a bird that loves to perch on the backs of various large mammals living in Africa. The birds find easy meals on the backs of zebra, wildebeest and other creatures as they feast on the various parasitic insects that these mammals attract. Their relatively gigantic friends also keep them safe from smaller predators, while the birds, in addition to providing a hygienic benefit, keep watch in all directions and can alert their larger hosts if any large predators or humans approach.

Some do, and it can be fatal, also can cause blindness and some other very nastiness. It is spread the same way as in humans but also very young koalas can get it from their mothers. There may be a precursor infection with a virus sort of like hiv. There is a good article on >> live science << no gaps, dot com.

We tried doing this for my dog when I had to leave him behind for college. (Couldn't find a rental that allowed pets.) He ended up crying and spent the rest of the day in my room, cuddled up to the PJs he took out of the laundry basket. The only way we could Skype with my mother was for her to go over to my grandmother's so my dog wouldn't hear my voice. 😭

These are the things that keep me going when the suicidal thoughts are overwhelming - I can't bear the thought of my dog mourning me, so I have to outlive him at least. Yes, I receive regular mental health care, no worries. Tbh, my dog does a better job then all of the doctors & therapists combined. Now he's at the end of his life and I am not sure how I'll make it without him😭

I don't know if this will help. But there's so many animals that need the love of a human (and vice-versa). If you leave us too soon, you will also be leaving a future animal in need. I hope I haven't made things worse.

I have a Golden Retriever and a Siamese mouse, and they love each other so much! When the mouth wakes up, the dog runs to her aquarium and cries until we get the mouse out. When the mouse sees the dog, she runs over to him and stands on her back legs to reach for him. She used to be afraid of him, but then she found out that he can't get through the glass, so now, when we take her out, they both want to be together! He kisses her and she puts her hands on his nose and tries to kiss him. He's a little worried about that and looks away but never leaves her!

It represents the third eye chakra, or the "ajna", known as the seat of concealed wisdom. They are most often worn by married woman, as iirc, its a part of the hindu wedding traditions, though some unmarried younger women may now wear it as a fashion item, too. Widows are traditionally not allowed to wear bindi. (this is what I know, anyway, but I am not Indian/Hindu, and may be wrong)

While this is adorable, cats should not be allowed to wander freely. They are detrimental to local bird populations and it puts them at greater risk of disease, fleas, ticks, predators, and/or getting run over or poisoned, which happened to a neighbor's cat.

I had a cat once who would drag hubby's dirty underwear that he left on the floor by his side of the bed, into the livingroom, howling as he came. Well, we had company once when he did this and hubby started using the hamper after that. I had even complained to his mother that she had never trained him to do this. Her response? "Just be thankful they are beside YOUR bed."

It’s amazing how tiny kittens will want to spend time with the older cats, even if they’re not at all related to each other. When we rescued our youngest cat, Tabitha, who had been abandoned all alone near our property, she was about 5 to 6 weeks old and teeny-tiny—-didn’t even weigh one pound! After spending the first week on my neck under my hair, she started to get curious about the house and other four-legged occupants. We had one dog, who was the first one to say hello, and four grown cats, one of which was about 18 years old. They all welcomed her, and she tagged along them around like she was star struck. Basically, the older cats were the ones who taught little Tabitha how to properly “cat”. The dog, who let her just crawl all over him, was like her security guard, because old Scruffy absolutely loved his feline pack and would’ve gladly given his life defending them.

I got my first kitten in the summer. She'd sometimes have "accidents" on the carpet by the back door and I'd open the door and put her out on the grass. Time went by and it became a habit I didn't think much of. Until one morning it happened again. I opened the door and put her straight into snow. She had never seen snow before and she hated it. She never had an accident after that and she house trained her kittens too. The smartest cat I've had.

My kitty didnt know how to use a litter box and would always *go* on the floor. So whenever he did that he would hide bc he had abusive owners who hit him for doing that.

That is not the face of a remorseful cat. That is the face of a cat that is thinking, "How could you possibly lock me out after I purposely snuck out without you knowing?? This is your fault!! Now let me back in and warm me up!"

If you have animals, and you get them used to eating at a specific time, you never need to set up your alarm for that time again. Because I guarantee they will let you know, in no uncertain terms, that”It is now [fill in feeding time] o’clock and time to get your a*s out of bed and feed us, because we will not let you alone until you do.”

My cats have never done this. They love the snuggles they get when I sleep in on weekends or school is on break (I'm a teacher.). However: my old cat would wakeup the roomie I had a for awhile! I was at a conference in Denver, just after school was done for the year, enjoying breakfast with the colleague who was there with me. The roomie, back in California sent me a picture of my cat demanding his breakfast and 6:00sh, their time....so much for roomie sleeping in! I have always found it funny that he bossed her around that way, but not me!

Thank you soooo very much for becoming white boxer parent. Although white boxer’s actually make up 18% of puppies born they are (were) considered to be nothing short of abominations and of no use to breed therefore they were “deleted “ shortly after birth. To this day there is a cull on white boxer in German law.(circa 1925).

I tore a tendon years ago, and had surgery that left me laid up in a cast for a month. The entire time, I had at least one cat on the bed with me 24/7. We had three cats and a dog back then. The dog would sleep through the night in his bed on the floor next to mine, and I would have a maximum of three cats with me. They’d take turns, only really leaving to eat, visit the litter box, and stretch their legs, maybe visit my husband if he wasn’t at work. But the vast majority of their time was spent keeping me company. I never got lonely that whole month, even though my husband could only take a week off after I got home from the hospital.

NO!! If that’s a real dryer, no. Do not let your cat get used to going in the dryer, ffs. One day they’ll be in there, you won’t know it, and you’ll start the dryer, and break your cat’s neck. So NO.
