We reached out to Anita Kelsey who is a certified and vet-referred cat behaviorist in the UK and author of Let's Talk About Cats: Conversations On Feline Behaviour. She was kind enough to share her thoughts about why felines sometimes do strange things that don’t quite make sense to humans.
First, Kelsey mentioned that it really depends on what you define as “strange”: “We cannot explain all things to do with cats and I still come across the odd cat in my behavior practice whereby I will have no idea why they are doing a particular thing,” she told Bored Panda.
However, when we notice our little pets doing such weird stuff as in the What’s Wrong With Your Cat online community, there could be a reason behind it. “Generally, a cat acting ‘out of character’ would signify there’s a conversation to be had to understand why,” the feline behavior expert added.

I had one that liked to sleep on the back of the sofa. One day I heard something hit the floor...my cat had stretched in his sleep and had fallen on the floor. Unfortunately he didn't land on his feet, but except for some confusion, he was ok. He definitely was a derpy cat!

While the feline actions of your house cat may seem perplexing, Kelsey mentioned that usually their behaviors are based on evolutionary traits and instincts. “Cats are very curious animals,” she said. “So lots of things they do out of curiosity do land them into trouble, which could be classified as strange when being viewed from the outside. A cat does not act mysteriously just for fun, that is human labeling.”
However, the expert provided a few examples of when you should be concerned about the way your pet is behaving. “When a human knows their cat well, including the typical structure of their day and behaviors, it is easy to spot worrying changes,” Kelsey explained.
“An example of this is sleeping for longer than usual, hiding away from their guardians, lack of interest in play or food, not going outside anymore if free-roaming, toileting outside of the litter tray, or aggression that isn’t normally there.”

It seems that there’s a lot that we still don’t know about cats. While the general public feels confused by the actions of their little furry friends, feline behavior experts believe that some weird cat behavior can be explained.
Many are familiar with the cute kneading of their paws, when cats move them up and down, as if “making biscuits.” Nikki Johnson, an animal behaviorist at RSPCA Victoria, told INSIDER that kittens will knead their mothers to stimulate milk production.

I was taking care of two Persian cats for 6 months who wouldn't let anyone brush them. After the 6 months were up, they looked absolutely pristine. After cutting off the matted parts with the nail clipper (because I could have it on the coffee table and it would happen before they found out) I snuck in a few brushes every time they were cuddling with me on their backs on the sofa. That did it.

“We think adult cats knead because it’s connected with the soothing and comfortable practice from when they were kittens. It’s the same reason some cats drool. They are both little behaviors left over from kittenhood,” she explained.
When it comes to finding cats in the most unusual and tiny places, it probably makes them feel secure: “You will see tigers exhibit the same behavior in zoos when given access to boxes,” the animal behaviorist said. “We think it’s linked with a feeling of safety and security. Meanwhile, if a cat nudges or is headbutting your leg, it doesn’t always mean they’re asking to be petted. Richard Gowan, a senior veterinarian at The Cat Clinic, explained that “we, as humans, perceive headbutting as a sign of affection but the cat may not tolerate you bending down to pat it.”
“Cats have limited scent glands around their body. They have these glands around their feet, face, and bum. So generally, when cats do things like kneading, scratching, or headbutting, they’re actually marking you with their glands,” the veterinarian added.

My best friend in HS had a big black cat named Tabu. His job was to feed all the other cats, by getting up on the counter, opening the cabinet door, and pulling the food box over to spill (mostly) in the bowl kept on the counter for this purpose. We liked to go over to her house and watch Tabu do his thing. The other cats stood politely and waited for food to be delivered, and looked just like this gang.

I had 4 cats and a dog. Max, the dog, had weight issues due to hypothyroidism and was not supposed to eat cat food as it is so rich. I would feed the cats on paper plates (don't judge me) and every single cat would leave a little bit on their plates, then push it off the floor where the dog was waiting. The cats broke my dishes, thus the paper plates.

In my lifetime I've had 6 cats; 4 girls and 2 boys. The girls were definitely cats, just having different personalities. The boys were more like dogs than cats. They came when called and were really laid back. Unfortunately, they were also a little clutzy. This picture looks very familiar.

My sister adopted a very feral cat who only interacted with humans when he was hungry: he bit them. So my nephew decided to do some behavioral training by resisting the urge to feed the cat until feline allowed him to pet her. I was trying to grow catnip for my many many cats... I tried planting it in big pots, they pulled it up. I tried planting it in the ground... they pulled it up. I had an "aha!" moment and put some in a large hanging basket...came home to three cats on the roof, pulling it out of the pot. I always try to keep a little growing around the graves of my dear departed, so they'll get visitors =^..^=

Reminds me of Ernest Braun, wonderful photographer who wrote articles for Outdoor Photography magazine. If I recall correctly, he picked up his daughter from school one day and as they were driving down the street she called out “cat in a bowl” so he stopped and took photos. The photo and story ended up in the magazine, being ready to take photos by having your gear with you at all times. RIP Ernest

Dogs either. Citrus is a natural pet behavior deterrent if you spray some lemon or orange mixed with water on rugs and furniture you want to keep them from damaging. Vinegar and water works too. It's not the best though so use positive reinforcement along with it.

I hope you don't let him play with rubber bands??? A rubber band much like string can cause obstruction of a cat's intestine and become lodged. I had a cat when I was a child that passed away due to this.

My cat has learned to shoot the rubber bands across the room. Uses 1 paw and his mouth. Then he chases them and does it again. He will play with it for quite a while, then just bite it in half and abandon it. Why?

This baby looks like the splitting image of my late Cotton Rotten, but he was a Manx. He had the smallest little stub of a tail but the fur was crazy on it. Now I know what a tail might would've have looked like.

Maybe he needs nail caps. Not for nothing, but this can be dangerous if he does it when you're not home. We had a foster cat that became a tripod because he got a claw stuck in something and was not able to free itself. The rescue vet told me it's not uncommon for cats to get stuck this way and hurt themselves.

One of my two cats does this, too, but was told there's something in the cardboard itself that causes cats to want to chew on it. I should google it, something in cardboard, the way it's made or something. Just took kittys box away from her today. She'll find another cardboard box & start over tho' .

I had one, Shiloh, who had a void brother, Orinoco, who had brain damage. Orinoco absolutely loved eggs any way he could get them. Shiloh would frequently jump onto the kitchen bench, pick up an egg in his mouth and drop it onto the floor for Orinoco. Empathy, smarts and a very big mouth! Miss them both.

I had 2 gingers that were always getting into trouble. I had just put a plate of fried chicken on the table, but forgot the mashed taters. I came back and 2 pieces of chicken were missing. One was sitting in the dining room chair. Poor Nit, short for Nit Wit. His brother was Mewer and he was the baddest boi. One day I was working in the yard and the mailman opened the mailbox and screamed. They had managed to open it just enough to slither in. 2 bad bois.

1. Your little tray needs waaaaay more litter in it, aim for 4inches deep. 2. If this is an out-of-the-blue behavior, check the cat is able to pee properly. Only time I ever saw my cat lay down and sleep in the litter box was when he started peeing blood, his urethra became blocked and his bladder nearly exploded. He was laying down in the litter trying to tell me he desperately wanted to pee but couldn't.

Our grandcat went in for dental work woke up on the table and took off. The tech came out and told my son it might be a while. They closed down the clinic searched everywhere, finally found him in a cabinet in the X-ray room.

I had a semi feral who escaped the cage and made about 75 circuits of the exam room, at a little over shoulder height, before exhaustion took him and he came back down. She had to sedate him to have a look at him. It's amazing how high cats can go when they've a mind to.

I have 6 kitties and 2 do this constantly, that’s why we have a put both seats down rule cause I got sick of cleaning little paw prints and fur outta the toilets daily, lol! Another one will only drink running water from the sink so we got her a fountain bowl for when we aren’t home!

Our lady does this too. She has a water bowl but prefers to drink directly from the tap, toilet and even a glass. Cats are weird.

Some cats only like very fresh water, some only like moving water, some will drink anything. I have one who loves drinking the water from the bird baths, and one I have to turn the faucet on in the sink.

I don't know about anyone else but I have a visceral reaction to see cats out of carriers inside vehicles. Even cats who are leashed inside a vehicle. You may drive safely everywhere every where you go but you cannot predict how others drive. If a car smashed in to that car that cat would be propelled out of it. It could survive but you may never see it again. Personally if I was in a crash I would rather my cat was safely at home to be taken care of by friends.

If ever we needed to have visual evidence to back up our weirdest moments that escape comprehension as to how we can go wonky once in a while and not let it define us, these pictures should make us a little more forgiving of marching to that different drummer once in a while. We are a xerox copy of anything when born. And it's up to us to not settle for anything.

I had a cat who would be lying asleep in one room, dead to the world, yet if light reflected off my phone and made a light spot on the wall, damn cat would be there in a split second. He could hear light! He not only knew how to open doors but unlock them as well. He knew where his treats were regardless of where I tried hiding them. His meow was the sound of Demons being summoned. And so much more. I was convinced at one point he'd be immortal due to how much trouble he got into.
