Human memory is actually incredibly selective, and we often have no control over what we remember and how. Probably, each of you have had several cases when some completely unnecessary and petty nonsense crashed into your memory, but something really important left your mind almost immediately.

And this happens more than once or twice in life - even half a century later, we remember who made that silly fumble in a meaningless regular season football game, but at the same time, we can forget the date of our own wedding anniversary (God forbid doing this, in fact, it’s better to write down it somewhere, just believe me!) It's just how our memory works, and there's nothing to be done about it.

Moreover, such selectivity is typical not only for individuals' memory, but also for entire groups of people or even all of humanity. It is enough, for example, to recall the famous "Mandela effect," when after the death of the former President of South Africa and Nobel laureate Nelson Mandela in 2013, it turned out that many thousands of people around the whole world were for some reason completely convinced that he had passed away back in the mid-eighties, while in prison.

In fact, such phenomena of collective memory are not isolated, there are a huge number of facts and various things in life that are often not given attention, and people live as if they do not know this - although it is actually obvious to almost everyone. And so, a few years ago, a thread appeared in the AskReddit community, the topic starter of which asked people this question: "What fact is ignored generously?"

As of today, the original thread has over 66.5K upvotes and around 26.7K diverse comments, so there is a real danger of getting lost in this sea of information. Lucky for you, there is Bored Panda, who specially compiled this selection of the most interesting, unexpected and just extremely popular comments of the thread, so please feel free to scroll to the very end and we're almost sure that some submissions will surprise you at least for some reason. And of course, your own comments are highly appreciated as usual.

Slavery in general was legal for a large part of history. Half the U.S. fought and lost to try to keep it legal. A decent chunk 9f the U.S. would like to refight that war to make it legal again.

The rewards for harmful though legal actions corresponds to guilt level. Lawyer for a slumlord = pillar of justice who has a great house and car to prove it. $20K a year deputy who evicts people for the slumlord = self-hating, miserable man in a trailer home.

That’s a dark space to exist in Paulo. I remember feeling like that but I had the realisation that I *was* born and it was up to me to decide what happens next. For the next 10 years I changed jobs and tried my hand at all of the things I wanted to try in my spare time. I ignored the things my upbringing told me I should or shouldn’t do and pursued my passions. I did stand up comedy, tattooing, was successfully self employed and fronted bands. All this because I realised that if I didn’t care about life and nobody else cared about my life I was free to try and fail. As soon as I wasn’t afraid to fail I was free to explore and decide what I wanted to do with this existence that was forced on me. I’ve never been rich but I’ve been so much happier. Follow your passions and don’t be afraid to fail. If anybody criticises or mocks your failures remember - they are the people afraid of failure, you’re already a few rungs up the ladder from them. Keep climbing.

Let's find a happy medium with blinkers though. Its not helpful if you put it on a mile before your turn & its not helpful if you wait until you are turning to use it. Just give the driver behind you enough notice so they don't require evasive maneuvers to avoid rear ending you.

Mental health care. As bad as health care is here in the US, mental health care is worse. There is no parity. I have to be mindful of the number of visits or treatments that I have in a year for them to be covered by my insurance. I can tell you from personal experience that spending hours in the E.R. getting glass removed from your face (as well as the dermabrasion appointments to reduce the scarring) is not very pleasant. Nor does it mean they don't have the same rights as you to express their opinion. Treat their opinion about the proper way to avoid a heart attack the same way you treat your doctor's opinion on the proper way to run simulate fear on a blue screen set. Experts earned trust in their field, everyone else still needs to prove it. That includes all of us. My opinion on this topic is as valid as Kanye West.

Well there's also plenty of idiots who are in those fields so there's that. Lots of doctors prescribing Ivermectin for covid. Plenty of politicians having zero clue how a woman's body works, and so called experts who still believe in bootstraps and trickle down economics despite years of data saying otherwise. But yes it would be nice if actual educated (and well researched) and qualified opinions were headed more.

People don't realize the extent to which this is true. It's not like animals in regular zoos. It's physically possible to give some zoo animals a habitat that matches the size of the amount of area they'd typically move around in in the wild. This isn't the case for large ocean-dwelling animals.

Neither are the animals in zoos. It’s not just aquatic life that suffers. About 7 yrs ago my older sister comes up to me after watching Black Fish, & was like, “You know they (whales), aren’t supposed to be in there(tanks). 🤦🏻‍♀️ I wanted to scream, “You’re just figuring that out now?!”, but took the fact she even realized it as a win.

I can agree with this. But there are few zoos that base their entire existence on protecting endangered animals, and they get their funding from visitors. Those types of zoos I respect. But those other zoos that treat their animals like c**p should all be shut down. There are also a few aquatic sanctuaries that do this as well. If you've never heard of her, look up Winter the dolphin.

Eyewitness testimony is being weighed as less in courts now. Especially in cases where there is video footage usually from security cameras. And some cases are being overturned years later due to the change in how witness testimony is viewed. It isn’t perfect, and no one should be punished for a crime they didn’t commit, but slowly, and in some cases a bit unwillingly, we are moving towards a better system. History should be taught not as an identity but as a reminder to do better.

Reminds me of this study I read about. Researchers showed people a bunch of faces and asked them to pick the most attractive one. Then later on, they showed them a different face and asked them "why did you pick this one?" and their brains started retroactively making up things. These people were not lying, they genuinely believed this was the face they chose, and started talking about the ears, eyes, etc. The human brain is very good about lying to us.

I got to ride motorcycles with my dad a few times during his waning years. He'd been riding since the 1950s, but I saw him engage in some seriously flaky, dangerous, amateur behavior. I had to inform him about some of the dangers... Like riding in the middle of the lane where all the grease and dust accumulate, trying to ride two-abreast instead of staggered, refusing to wear any protective equipment, refusing to buy new tires when the old ones were rock hard, etc etc. He told me that he'd been riding since long before I was even born, and I literally said, "Just because you've been doing something for a long time doesn't mean you've been doing it right." He didn't have anything to say to that, but he did let me outfit him with helmet, jacket, and gloves.

Older also doesn’t mean unhireable or not the right person for the job or someone who’s going to leave the company to retire in a couple years anyway. Some of us can’t afford to retire at 65, and need to keep—-or get—-jobs that are in our field, not the f*****g greeter at Walmart, ffs. Jobs we might have to stay at until we’re well into our eighties. Now, we may not work as lightning fast as someone younger—-though we’re not that f*****g slow—-but we make sure our work is done completely and correctly, instead of fast, dirty, and half-assed. Additionally, some of us got degrees or additional degrees as older adults, so have education and training that’s just as recent as that of someone in their twenties—-and we probably got better grades as well. So don’t ignore our resumes, and don’t let our age be the deciding factor for hiring us or not. We may be older, but we still have bills to pay—-often way more than younger people, including student loan payments for recent degrees we thought would help us but are now hindering us—so need a steady income too, ffs.

I was once the SME of a tiny bit of the company I worked for. Other people had the capability to do the job but when they got stuck they called me. I always found the answer, usually fairly quickly. Often the person I helped would compliment me on how smart I was. I always said that I wasn't smarter than them I was just more experienced. (I may have been smarter than some of them but that's beside the point) 😊

If you have enough money you only need an average intelligence to pick good funds. I don't know s**t about the stock market. But I can pick the winners by looking at the fees, history of the fund and type of fund. I don't have enough money to invest though. Takes a really smart and driven person to go from poor to rich. Takes a really reckless or stupid person to go from rich to poor.

They are going on in the US too. They are called for-profit prisons. Its where people are sent for minor crimes like possession of marijuana that is now legal and forced to work in slavery to make whatever the company says. The 13th amendment specifies slavery is still legal for punishment of a crime and we have concentration camps across the US using the loophole.

Being cold (and if you're wet you get cold faster) can stress your immune system, making you more susceptible to infection, or, if you already are infected, can increase the severity of your symptoms. Being cold does not cause colds.... but you should still dress warmly and not go outside with wet hair when it's cold outside.

Not everyone who doesn't do what you want or think you deserve is homophobic or racist. These days if you don't hire someone or rent them your house etc. there is often a reason not connected to your sexual orientation or race. Don't assume discrimination about everything that doesn't go your way. Remember what it means when you assume. "Makes an a-- out of you and me". I had a "conversation" with someone in a YouTube comments section. The video poster was doing a "free" restoration project for one of their viewers. The commenter said it was so kind and generous of him to donate his time and expertise for free and that he does it all out of the kindness of his heart with no care for views and likes. I pointed out that he was going to make a lot more off the video than what he would have simply providing the service in private and that he also asked for likes at least 4 times during the video. The person said it was just my opinion. I gave them actual numbers based on their over a million subscribers and average million views per video and how many thousands of dollars the video would likely make. They still insisted it was just my opinion that he'll make money off the video. Very frustrating!

But not all facts apply to everyone the same way. There are always exceptions and situations where something might be a fact, but some other facts are more important or certain circumstances mean that one fact looses impact. For example: it's a fact that internet self diagnosis can be dangerous and it's generally better to see a doctor, but it's also a fact that some people are poor and cannot afford a doctor. So the third fact is: in that case, an internet recherche and self treatment might be all they have available to them, and it's better than nothing at all.

Actually there have been studies to show that not everyone needs that much sleep at night. Some only need 4 hours some need to break up there sleep, like sleep for 4 hours up for 8 sleep for 4 etc. Sleep is important but you should try to cater your sleeping to your natural rhythm. It was lol, it was also in the news that a Cruise ship uses a certain type of less refined fuel when in high waters that causes 4 Times more polution that the fuel they use when they come to port.

I didn't search for hours but I did find a reference that stated that while it's true that 14-billion pounds of garbage ends up in the sea annually cruise ships accounted for 24% of that. Which is a lot considering how few cruise ships there are compared to merchant vessels.

Totally agree. Also, if something happens to you (general you) on a cruise (e.g. you go missing), trying to find you is a nightmare because the ship is usually registered in a different country, the place you went missing might have different laws; if you disappear in international waters, etc. etc. Hell to the no.

This is a lie. They produce a ridiculous amount of trash but not 14 billion pounds of trash. The 18.5 million people in the 5 boroughs of NYC produce 14 million tons (28 billion pounds) of trash a year. That's about 76,712,328 lb per day and 4 lb per person per day. 30 million people took cruises in 2019 so about 82191 people per day were on the seas. At 14 billion pounds, that means cruises would be producing 38,356,164 lb of trash a day at 467 lb per person.

I've grown to learn in this era of my life, that I most definitely do not want to plan more than 2 things outside or home each week. Not only because going "outside" to do something or go somewhere will take a minimum of 40 minutes, of which most is driving on a terribly maintained dirt road... So, for myself I set a limit at two things max "outside". Not because I hate being around people, not because of anxiety, not because of anything but just not wanting to waste time I could have spend in our lovely quiet little piece of paradise 😉

So? Unless you're under the belief that what has been in someone's hand has tainted that hand forever, the chances are that hand has almost certainly held or touched bodily fluids of some description, at least one finger has been inserted up a nose. Assuming no dribbles, touching a penis is among the cleaner things that hand has done.

Confirmation bias is a good thing most of the time and a horrible thing the rest. For average tasks like getting ready in the morning, it allows our brains and bodies to devote energy to more important things. Primitively, you don't check back of the cave for tigers every morning because there's never been a tiger there.Quick glance proves there's no tiger. You go check the cattle to make sure the tiger didn't come back there. Now, you walk in to see the medicine cabinet open and the flintstone vitamins on the counter, you "know" Johnny took their vitamins and just forgot to close the door. You don't go check they only took those because doing so wastes time you need to get ready. Problem is the one day that one kid out of 10000 took a Viagra as well.

Okay but sometimes you just know something without evidence, and you doubt yourself because no one else seems to notice it. So when you're vindicated... is it conformation bias or just that you pick up on some truth that no one else did? My own example is Kevin Spacey. I could not watch movies with him in because they made me feel dirty, like I would want to take a bath. (Everyone raved over American Beauty and I hated it. I knew this man was just disgusting and evil.) When he was shown to have preyed on teen boys I wasn't in the least surprised.

Hard work for hard work's sake is overrated. If John can lift 300lb on his own, he's still being stupid if he refuses to use the electric wench that does the work in half the time and no risk of back pain. I regularly see people try to re-invent the wheel when they own a metaphorical Ferrari and just need to refill the gas tank and change the channel on the radio. In IT, we have a place called Stack Overflow where people have solved hard problems and shared the answer. I work with people who feel they must prove their genius instead of just tweaking someone else's genius solution.

if a is say, 4, and b is 7, then (4^2+7^2) would equal 16+49 which is 65, but (4+7)^2 would be 11^2 which is 121. that's a difference of 56. now, it's time for me to reflect on the fact that I actually went to the trouble to explain that.

Wish I could upvote this more! Also, why is it ok for everyone to brag about being innumerate, but if this was a post about being illiterate you would be saying how unacceptable it is for people to lack basic literacy skills in this day and age. If this is too hard for you because it is algebraic, how would you multiply 12 x 13, for example? The answer isn't 100 + 6, but 100 + 30 + 20 + 6 = 156 because you have to distribute each number to each number.

They also sunk the Rainbow Warrior, the flagship of Greenpeace, in New Zealand in 1985 as it was on it's way to protest against French nuclear bomb tests. Australia commissioned France to build nuclear submarines for our army years ago, but they never made them, then got upset when the contract was torn up and a new one was made with the USA who are building them right now. Then our f*****t Prime Minister Albanese just gave them a few million $ as a sorry gift for them doing nothing, like we just had the money lying around for that. No one ever talks about what the French did to the Rainbow Warrior, and it will never make sense why our government then went and asked them to build us some subs.

That's not really wisdom so much as a judgement. You can have all these before kids and still end up solo parenting, or homeless, jobless, in horrible medical debt (U.S.) or emotionally or mentally unstable yourself. Nevermind that contraceptives aren't always easily accessible and abortion is illegal in many states in the US.
