Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.

"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.

"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."

According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.

This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.

"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.

"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.

"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.

"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.

Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.

"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.

I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.

At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

Yet in truly hopeless cases, they keep the life support systems running for years, thereby draining the bank accounts of the surviving family. Too much one way, too much the other, and all without doing the best and most complete evaluation possible, then repeating it X number of times, to be sure.

The third most likely thing to kill you in America is a mishap at the hospital. Let's stop using taxes for for bombs and start building up healthcare, schools, and infrastructure. Just imagine, that father stood armed before SWAT and was still more likely to be killed by doctor error. Let's go, America!

Sadly it really isn't the doctors or hospitals that push for these things to happen...it's the stupid insurance companies! Sometimes I think hospitals are too quick to help people on life support because they get paid really well for organs. I know they did this to my sons dad. We were holding his hand, and talking to him and we seen a tear fall from his cheek. He could hear us. When they said they were going to take him off the ventilation machine and that we could be there. They said they'd do it for 10 minuets and see if he could breath on his own. Well.... they never did that. And when family members asked what time was it when he was declared gone, we all got a different answer. They said that they were just keeping on the machine to harvest his organs. Lots of money for the hospitals to be made doing this.bs

What sort of "doctors" would turn off life support against a parent's wishes????? Used to work in a hospital, Sadly, there were frequently days and weeks long horrible situations. With people on life support, Long sessions with the families, And they would NEVER turn it all off against a families express wishes.

Very good! When I was in Coma 2010 by pig-influence,my doctors told my son, they cannot awake me and I’ll be a “vegetable” if I do not die. Well, I am back again. Ok, my hands and feed are not very strong, but I am touring by a Pedelec every day for about 30 km. And in coma I ever knew, that I was not in real life, but I did not know how to manage, to come back.

I should’ve done that, after the hospital declared my brother had Covid 19 and under my refusal to put him on a ventilator because I knew he didn’t have Covid 19, they murdered him by refusing my and my families requests for treatment of a bacterial infection in his lungs. After they said he didn’t have a bacterial infection in his lungs, the day before he passed away, the social worker called and said my brother was not going to make it due to Covid 19 AND because he had a severe bacterial infection in his lungs….his kidneys and liver gave out and then got pneumonia and his body filled with fluid causing him to blow up like a balloon. During that time, we received unmatching methods of treatment buy 4 different doctors. To top it off, someone stole his silver Indian head ring that had real jewels for eyes from his belongings….this was St Joseph’s Hospital in Reading, Pa. if you’re a lawyer that can help, we’d like to sew them for wrongful death

NPR had a similar incident that happened in Boston. Woman's fiance would not give up. The day after the hospital told her parents she was"gone", the fiance stayed up with her. She'd lost her sight, had severe injuries to body and head. After months of attempts to make contact, at 3 a.m. she squeezed his hand. He spelled" what is your name", and she spoke Emily. He called her folks who immediately came to the hospital. She is alive, married, blind but her husband never gave up.

I was just reading the news articles on this situation & the father was jailed again after the original incident because he was ordered by the court to have no contact with his son. Thats very sad. Here's what the article stated: Pickering is in trouble again after a no-contact order was put in place by the judge following the standoff, keeping Pickering from seeing his son. Pickering doesn't understand that order. Prosecutors wouldn't explain. For now, he remains behind bars awaiting trial on aggravated assault charges stemming from the standoff.

Ppl underestimate a parent's intuition. This reminds me of when a child goes missing and the cops will say s**t like "they probably ran off. They'll be back" and the parents are like "bitch! I know my child. They wouldn't do this!" And it's only until the child winds up dead that the authorities actually start looking into the case... all the while had they taken it seriously from the start the child might have been saved. Had they just listened to the parents they could have prevented a tragedy. Obviously this is the same. But It was very close to being the same.

Why was it doctors choice? Yes you can declare the patient brain dead but isn't it up to family to make the decision to end life support? Good for dad though. While I'm not for the use of guns like this, I cannot imagine what he was going through. His son, somehow must have heard his father.

Yeah nah, I can't possibly get behind this. This man was drunk, took a nurse hostage and a protective order was made against him to keep him away from his family. Healthcare workers are murdered every year by unhinged lunatics. The gun lobby just went heavily on this story to spin it into a pro-gun narrative, and you all seem to have swallowed it whole without question.

Does anyone notice that doctors and nurses think they can determine the truth and well-being of your child more than you? Like they are in control of your lives, not that they are hired to protect your life. It is concerning. Glad it turned out for the best. They should be charged for reckless endangerment, attempted murder, violence, and gross display of coercion. If you do not understand what I am meaning, nevermind.

Charlie Brown and Franz Stiegler: The B-17 was heavily damaged and going down, but Brown was able to get it stable again. The german air field commander said that any pilot who shoots at parachutes will be executed, and Stiegler considered the barely flying plane as parachute. He flew so close the the machine that the AA batteries couldn't shoot without hitting Stiegler, and he signaled Brown to land - which he refused. Stiegler decided to escort them out of the hostile air space

Henry Ford expressed he liked how germany was run in the thirties, being an antisemit as well, and Edison ... well, where to begin, where to begin ... has he ever invented anything himself, not just taking credit for what competitors and employees have come up with?

The school I teach at played another school (we're both state/public schools but the other school always acted like they were better than other state schools) and they beat the pants off us using this move set. (I had not taught my chess kids this move set as I wanted them to develop their own strategies.) The next time we played that school, I had taught them the counter to it, so the next time we won. The next season that school suddenly "didn't have time" to play chess matches anymore.
