40 Of The Most Interesting And Beautiful Old Things That These People Have The Pleasure Of Owning
InterviewMid-century modern style refers to the design movement of mid-20th-century interior, product, graphic design, architecture, and urban development. Today, MCM is recognized as a significant design movement by scholars and museums around the globe, and it’s impossible not to see its appeal.
There’s even a whole community on Reddit that introduces itself as “a community for enthusiasts of mid-century modern design. From Charles and Ray Eames to Paul McCobb and Adrian Pearsall.”
Created 11 years ago, back in 2011, the "Mid Century" subreddit is an online destination for examples of mid-century modern design, from furniture to interiors that take our breath away.
Below we wrapped up some of the most interesting examples, so pull your seats closer!

Before And After Lane Acclaim First Edition Cocktail Table, From 1959! This Poor Thing Survived 6 Decades Of Abuse Before It Found Its Way To Me. That's Twice As Long As I've Been Alive. Crazy!!
Great job of bringing it back to it's original gorgeousness 🤩
I applaud you for not painting this beautiful piece! It came out amazing!
I’ve Spent Years Collecting Pieces And Moving Them Around From Rental To Rental Or Hiding Them In Storage. They’re All Finally Together In My First House
The colours are just gorgeous! Vibrant but not enough to hurt the eyes
Load More Replies...I also love that from the comment about spending years to collect the pieces, I guess that the owner probably started collecting them before the 60/70 style became trendy again. I love that, when people know what they like, and go for it.
There's nothing better than random pieces of furniture and decorations put together. Tells a lot about a person, unlike interior trends

To find out what an expert thinks about the mid-century modern style that has been gaining a lot of popularity lately on Instagram, we reached out to Dr. Lori Verderame, a Ph.D. antiques appraiser who’s an internationally syndicated columnist and an author with 30 books to her credit.
Dr. Lori explained that the mid-century modern style is the characteristic look in design of the late 1940s through the 1970s, so basically it is the design of the 1950s and 1960s. “Mid-century modern design, known as MCM, has become more popular and valuable over the last 20 years,” she said.
It’s In And It Works And It’s Perfect!
I believe the only reason this would be true is IF the original coils have significantly more energy demand for a similar heat output, which seems unlikely. In which case they could likely be refitted with something of different composition. Also, insulation could be less effective but that is unlikely also, as it's probably asbestos, which is not dangerous when contained, and in spite of its dangers when handled, is generally more effective at its job than most things that have been invented to replace it.
Load More Replies...I'd recable it if I were to use it. The covering on old power cable is likely to be brittle.
Bruce, a story about old cables for you. In my previous house that was built circa 1957 there was an old fridge in the garage which was plugged into a power point a few meters away via an extension cable(probably 1957 vintage?) The cable was looped through a metal shelving rack..see where this is going? Shortly after moving in I turned the fridge on at the wall and the circuit breaker popped. I traced the extension lead back and found that it was so old and had been sitting on an L-shape brace part of the shelving rack, that it had crumbled through to the bare wires. Thank goodness the original fuse box had been replaced with a modern one.
Load More Replies...Maybe get an electrician to give it the once-over before you start using this ...
Once you learn how to use electric hob, it can be as efficient as any other sources. They have long heat inertia, so even if turned off, they go on for 10 - 15 minutes until getting colder.
Why 5 knobs though? Only 3 burners and then the oven. Is the 5th one for the possible broiler on the bottom? Serious question here.
It’s kind of hard to see but from left to right the knobs are left front, center, right front, oven top and oven bottom.

LOVE THAT HORSE! I have been collecting horse figures from around the world for 60 years. I have some great ones including one 20-foot tall horse made just for me by an incredible artisan from an indigenous tribe in Venezuela (my hubby used to travel there often and this was a big surprise for me that he hand carried wrapped up on the plane) also a magnificent wooden horse from Slovakia, but I have never seen this one! Please list where you found it! Love the radio as well!
Been A While Since I Un-Painted A Piece! Fully Restored Brasilia II Petite Buffet With New Tapered Legs. What A Glow Up!
Because for a long time "brown" furniture was completely unsaleable and would be junked more often than not. At least in its painted state it managed to survive where so many pieces were literally chopped up for firewood.
Load More Replies...A decade or so ago everyone "up cycled" any vintage piece with "a pop of color*. It's nice to see some one putting it back to it's former beauty.
Okay, I like natural pieces, yes, but pool blue/aqua is my favorite color.
Yes..... SOOOOO much better.... Thank you for doing it justice..... Beautiful
So classy; some poor girl on our marketplace calls herself a furniture artist, yet she gets these fabulous pieces then ruins them with paint. Very much like the reverse of the before/after here. I'm glad to know that her "work" can be undone!
“It features space-age forms, new state-of-the-art materials, the fusion of natural and manmade elements, organic and geometric shapes, bright and bold textile designs, and bright colors. Materials like lucite, chrome, bakelite, and fiberglass are integrated in our homes and fashion,” Lori told Bored Panda.
I Snagged This Edwardian Dress Yesterday. It’s Just Too Stunning Not To Share
I hope you also enjoy sharing your home with the ghost of the original owner... <.<
I believe this may have been a dressing gown or night gown as opposed to something you would of actually worn out of the house. Today of course it could be used as a beautiful wedding dress.
Load More Replies...That is absolutely gorgeous and in great condition. They are hard to find and do not come cheap.

I like it, but I think you're going to need something else to boil the water!
These were to keep it warm. I have several and that's what I've reached but I'm sure some tried it this way:)
Load More Replies...We asked Dr. Lori if furniture and design items from the MCM period are valuable, and she confirmed that it’s definitely the case. “Furniture by big names in the mid-century modern movement like George Nakashima, Harry Bertoia, Charles Eames, and others continue to bring big money from collectors,” Dr. Lori explained.
Moreover, the antiques appraiser argues that mid-century modern furniture and design accessories will only increase in value over time, “as long as these vintage pieces are kept in good condition and are free of damage.”

While the desk is gorgeous, I want to talk about that lamp! I love it!🥰
I really like Danish mid-century design. I believe the lamp was designed by John Keal. At least I think so. But let's talk about that gorgeous wall clock.
Load More Replies...I have a pair of the same lamp on the desk with the original lampshades!!!!
I thought about this for a really (embarrassing) long time where do I remember this name. I preferred houses designed by the Art Vandelay.

Ge Fridge From Early '50s. Still Going Strong!
And the handle that bent when you attempted to free the ice cubes from their prison. 😂
Load More Replies...Stylish, but it consumes a ridiculous amount of electricity. Old fridges like this aren't really fit for modern use.
These were notorious for them to not be able to be opened from the inside. Children tended to play with these (mostly in the dumbsters) and then suffocate.
My Grandmother's from the 50's is still running too. Those things were built to last, unlike modern ones. At least the modern ones are more energy efficient though.
I have one from the 40s I keep dog food in it. They're cool looking, but you constantly have to defrost them.

!960's Fender Rhodes "Student Piano"
I retired after 40 years of being an electronic keyboard tech. I worked on many Rhodes pianos but never saw this. Just too cool!
I remember the Fender Rhodes "suitcase" piano, but I've never seen one like this before. You can tell from the style that it couldn't have come from any decade other than the 1960s.

Fully Restored Teak Chest! I Don't Know Who Glopped 2 Thick Layers Of Paint On This Beauty, But It Wasn't "Mint" To Be!
I think people paint over furniture for a different reasons. 1, fashion trends (chalk paint I'm looking at you!) 2, old furniture is so well made and stands the test of time that painting it up gives it a new lease of life and ensures it's use is continued instead of being dumped. 3, it's cost effective for people especially if you've been gifted furniture but it's just not your style by painting it you take ownership. Good thing about paint and old furniture is that it's not permanent it can come off. If people had just ditched it or used it for firewood you'd never find all these treasures under 6coats of paint. So if anything I think the painting of old furniture has probably been one of the best ways to preserve it for the future
I quite like that view! Also, sometimes painting furniture is also a way to hide repairs, as I've found out both to my benefit and at my cost 😉
Load More Replies...Don't understand people who paint over beautiful wood. What a difference!

Use them! I have a grand total of three of our family dinner plates left from the '70s (similar style), which suits my little family of three. We use them almost every day and they make me smile.
Why did they not put the stickers on the bottoms?? Would make it so much more visually appealing without losing the authentic labels!
I still have a full dinner set, packed away, un touched since they were bought.
They look like Noritake. I have a set that look similar.
Load More Replies...Absolutely, love them. I'd use them too. If you're afraid to use them too often, use them for Sunday dinners. I found a beautiful old set of dishes, service for twelve, dinner plates, salad plates, soup bowls, cups, saucers, dessert bowls, 4 serving dishes, gravy boat, sugar dish, and creamer). China speckled with varying shades of maple leafs. I love them. My husband surprised me with them for my birthday. He paid $100.00. We researched them online. I'm only missing one serving dish, and they're valued over $2500.00..

I personally love the radio/sound system. The advent of the transistor ruined the warm sound we used to enjoy on those old babies.
The picture, or television screen saver, is an illustration by Frank Frazetta, one of the more famous illustrators of the 20th century. Even if you don't know his name, you have seen his artwork. The art direction for the original movie Conan the Barbarian was based off of his illustrations.

They neither know, nor appreciate, it. Some have the mindset that old is junk and new is better. While that might apply to some things—-yep, they made cheap c**p back in the day too—-it generally doesn’t with furniture. Older furniture has solid wood frames that will support generations of reupholstering and restuffing, while newer furniture doesn’t, and is either made with cardboard, particle board, and cloth with no backing at all (you could easily kick a hole in it and nothing would stop your foot but the length of your leg). I would way rather refurbish well made furniture with solid wood frames than have to replace the flimsy overpriced s**t they sell in furniture stores today.

I’m 62, and this looks like the homes of a lot of my friends back in the day. My parents were older, so were still into post WWII colonial style. Airbnb My Boyfriend And I Are Staying At! The Vibes Are *chefs Kiss* Immaculate
I dunno man. I grew up in places that looked like this. It doesn't make me think chic, it makes me think mid-century misery. Still, they're kinda nailing the theme and as long as others like it.
I think this is the answer to an earlier post asking why people throw out mcm furniture. For people of a certain age, it reminds them of their parents taste and is just “hand me down old”. That said I love that a newer generation of people are lovingly restoring it. Even though the fact that my childhood stuff is now considered “vintage” is a real downer😂

Isn't Charlotte also the Queen City? Although they're pretenders because it's obviously the 'Nati.

I love Miami Carey. She's the one who sings about how she doesn't want a lot for Easter, right?
I'll bet it still works. You won't find that quality in anything new. Built my house in '93 and the intercom didn't make it a year before it failed twice. Wasn't long after that it became nothing more than a whole house radio and doorbell, intercom totally useless. Doorbell module made it about 10 years. New module lasted until around 2018 when the whole thing went belly up.

I have been looking for a nice bell Victrola for years. When I was a child, they were common as dirt nd unappreciated, so could be picked up for pennies. Never could get my parents to buy one. Once I was old enough to work and had my own money, their price had skyrocketed. I do have a circa 1925 suitcase Victrola I picked up for pennies, which works perfectly, and loads of era-appropriate records. Still would love to have a bell Victrola, though.

$300 For The Lot. How Did I Do?
Seriously. The main furnishing for two rooms, dining room and living room. Just need a couple extra living room chairs, plus coffee, end tables, and lamps, and maybe a china cabinet for the dining room, and that’s two pretty important main rooms completed.

It's definitely intentional and a stylistic throwback to an even earlier age, even if there isn't a mirror-image fireplace on the other side of the wall.

My husband and I had a sofa like this when we were first married in the early 80's, we referred to it as dead relative furniture because it came from a dead relative. The fabric was rough, it was uncomfortable and I was so happy the day my dog ate a hole in the cushion. I'm sorry but I don't understand the mid century vintage vibe you all have going on here.

I'm not impressed by them; they look lazy and formulaic, like you might have found in a 1960's motel, which may be the owner's sought-after aesthetic?

I’m glad it’s being rescued, repaired, and refinished—-and, as someone who was born mid-century, so was around all these styles of decor when they were new, I know what I’m talking about when I say these younger folks are assembling some very authentic-looking period rooms. Plus, a lot of what they’re buying and restoring are investment pieces, many of which will only appreciate in value, that they can pass on to their own children.
These are cool to look at but I grew up looking at this style of decor and I find I don't miss it at all. Tons of pearl clutching about the painted pieces but folks got very tired of looking at the same thing for so long. "Back in the day" we kept furniture until it was beyond use before we replaced it so if you grew weary of seeing a credenza in the original wood you simply repainted it. I'm working on a small chest of drawers that served all 4 of us as infants (nearly 70 years) and I have no intention of taking down to the bare wood as we (surviving sis and brother) only knew it as "the little white chest of drawers".
So many beautiful items and decor. I'd like to think that some of those who posted also have an old classic Volvo P1800 out in the drive to compliment the look.

I grew up seeing this type of furniture everywhere. When I look at it, I feel like I've gone back in time - which isn't necessarily a good thing. I wish I could see it through the younger generations eyes.
Thanks for this post, it was quite nice.
I once picked up this exact mid-century modern Danish teak gateleg table on the street. Fancy neighborhood, someone had just put it out. It was dusty but gorgeous after I cleaned and oiled it: vintage-19...e_orig.png
