With so much information being thrown at us on a daily basis, it’s easy to lose focus and drift into apathy. Who cares about so many things at once, anyway?
No wonder more and more people are drawn to this old-time form of systematized information accompanied by great visualization. We’re talking maps. And not just dusty maps from your attic, but the most fascinating pieces that present things we know (and the ones we don’t!) in a refreshing light.
This subreddit has already earned its name as the ultimate destination for fans of cartography, so below we prepared a new batch of the most intriguing examples. After you’re done, be sure to check out more features of maps we did before here, here, and here.

There Is A Lake In Finland, That Looks Like Finland
In case you're wondering, because I looked it up immediately when I had learned about it: It's manmade, was made in 1991, is 116 meters long, and a 1:10,000 scale of Finland! The construction engineer was Esko Sääskilahti. It was going to be the Centerpoint of a tourist village, but that part was never completed. The lake took a week to excavate. Hope you enjoyed learning some more! :-)

Where The Death Penalty Survives Around The World
In my country (South Africa) we have terrible crime rates. Some say bringing the death penalty back would reduce it but Europe is a good example that that would not be the case.
The problem is not that the penalty is not severe enough. The problem is that the difference between rich and poor is too high. If you are starving to death, you will take more risks to survive

More than two-thirds of U.S. states, 37 out of 50, have either abolished the death penalty or have not carried out an execution in at least 10 years.
Yeah, I was gonna say that some of these maps are like kinda not showing the whole picture because some things vary by state, but I know it'd be down-voted.
Load More Replies...FYI - some of the United States (per state) do not have the death penalty.
Denmark had the death penalty on the books for quite a while longer than it was used, WW2 period excluded. It was customary for the king to change the verdict to life in prison. The last person to be executed by the royal executioner sought the death penalty actively and was "pardoned" several times until the king was like whatever, bring out the axe. After WW2 is was back but as soon as someone had to do it, it was thrown around and ended at the police who where not big fans of that job either so it ended rather quickly.
The US should probably be moved to the "Legal but not used" state, if you remove the tenure of Trump (and wouldn't we all like to do this) there would only be 3 death penalties carried out in Federal Courts since 1972, now State Courts are different, it's legal in about half the states and illegal, or a moratorium has been called, in about the other half
Uh, Trump was the President. There's no reason to discount his actions. I don't like him one bit, but he was legitimately the President of the United States for four years.

It's not about the crime, it's about the fact that no justice system is 100% reliable. If you introduce the death penalty for anything, you're accepting that the state will kill innocents.
Load More Replies...It looks like 2/3 of the world still believes in executions to a certain degree. And look at this map & tell me what is wrong here. Russia, legal but not used? Who made this map? They just executed a Chechen who turned his anger towards the Russian troops he was supporting He was killed with sledgehammers. So throw out that legal but not used c**p for Russia.
U.S. is a bit misleading. You would have to be convicted in a federal court to be sentenced to death. States such as Michigan or California do not have the death penalty and extenuating circumstances must be proved in the states that do.
