With so much information being thrown at us on a daily basis, it’s easy to lose focus and drift into apathy. Who cares about so many things at once, anyway?

No wonder more and more people are drawn to this old-time form of systematized information accompanied by great visualization. We’re talking maps. And not just dusty maps from your attic, but the most fascinating pieces that present things we know (and the ones we don’t!) in a refreshing light.

This subreddit has already earned its name as the ultimate destination for fans of cartography, so below we prepared a new batch of the most intriguing examples. After you’re done, be sure to check out more features of maps we did before here, here, and here.

In case you're wondering, because I looked it up immediately when I had learned about it: It's manmade, was made in 1991, is 116 meters long, and a 1:10,000 scale of Finland! The construction engineer was Esko Sääskilahti. It was going to be the Centerpoint of a tourist village, but that part was never completed. The lake took a week to excavate. Hope you enjoyed learning some more! :-)

Probably 'counties', not countries. Edit 5 hours later to add: hmm, they changed the title from 'countries' to 'counties' so this comment now confusing, "huh?".

I guess Ireland is part of Scandinavia now. Which makes sense - Dublin and two other cities (Limerick and Waterford) were founded by the vikings.

Look up the democracy index, it gives the categories and how they are judged. There is quite a lot to it.

Hybrid regimes are the worst! At least in full authoritarian regimes there's a clear figure to oppose and in a flawed democracy there's room to improve.

You know the guy who created democracy (I think Socrates?) Was voted by the people to die...full on democracy is weird, i think it takes a very special country to get it to work, one angry mob could cause a huge problem if they get to be a majority

I think in this past year, Russia has went from pink to red. Not directly so much with it's invasion of Ukraine but now how they are treating their own people. Putin is the absolute ruler, no longer a simple elected official. He is now president for life. Foes of his regime are being assassinated, sent to labor camps, & even executed in horrible ways. He is acting more like Stalin everyday.

this chart was obviously put out by a British person, kind of funny that they think they are a "Full" democracy (whatever that means) after all the s**t that has been going on in their parliament that last couple of years

No. The sh!t going on and that we can get rid of PMs we are not happy with, is part of democracy. Besides there being a very great deal more to it. The Democracy Index is based on 60 indicators grouped in five different categories, measuring pluralism, civil liberties and political culture. The Democracy Index produces a weighted average based on the answers to 60 questions, each one with either two or three permitted answers. Most answers are experts' assessments. Some answers are provided by public-opinion surveys from the respective countries. If you looked it up rather than used it to put the boot in, you'd see it is pretty thorough and reasonably assessed.

Must be an older map showing projections. As is, after 2016 the US should not score more than 4.00-5.99, with a declining trend to the number. Russia should in no way be above 2.99 since Putin began his second stint as president of that dictatorship in all but name.

Our Danish exchange student's Dad, when asked "how do you folks enjoy the socialized medicine, pensions, etc. without scandal?" said..."you have to watch them EVERY minute". Sigh.....we are SO disengaged. Hence the flawed Republic.

Might be helpful for you to read the qualifications that make up the different categories and why they get certain classifications. You'll then see why it really isn't.

Only the USA has the name " America" as part of their country name. Similarly to South Korean, generally speaking, no one says 'my parents are South Korean'. It's just 'my parents are Korean'. No one says 'I am United States of American's, it's just 'American'.
