America—some call it the land of dreams, while others think it’s just one giant sitcom with unexpected plot twists. But let’s be real, like every country, the U.S. has its own mix of highs and lows. And depending on who you ask, the opinions vary wildly. Some people see it as a place of opportunity, while others raise an eyebrow at its quirks.

According to a Pew Research Center survey, America's global reputation has been a bit of a rollercoaster over the years. Sometimes it's up, sometimes it's down, and a lot of it depends on who's sitting in the White House. Foreign policies, global relations, and internal politics all play a role in how the world perceives the U.S.

You don't need to be super fluent. And you can immerse yourself in German language by using the Internet wisely. As an US American getting a visa is no problem, and you can apply for a job in Germany. I am always puzzled that people who can easily travel by just buying a boat or plane ticket, getting their visa online and showing their passport at the border complain about "can't", while the poorest of the poor walk for months through deserts, jungles, cover water on wonky boats for a better future for themselves and their kids.

As a German full-time idiot, this doesn't apply for everywhere in frigging Germania...when we talk about living in a city, you have access to many of the things mentioned above, BUT that does not mean that you - as a person without private health insurance - can get an appointment for any specialist in time, let alone find a specialist that is still accepting new patients, and the touted high quality education tends to go in the opposite direction (think of the Pisa studies), because there are not enough teachers, many are as good as retired, the universities are slow to supply new teachers (10 semesters standard study time→5 years)...sure, nobody here has to die stupid, but it's not necessarily made ultra-difficult to do so either...🤷🏽 🇩🇪 🙋🏽

Ok, second comment on the same listicle, and my comments are almost never well-liked it seems. Anyway a credit score is a reflection of how confident lenders can be that you will repay your debt, there are meaningful advantages to having a good one and having a bad one means you have not been managing debt well. I wouldn't keep lending money to a friend who had a history of not paying it back, and banks are not your friends, so risk management is even more important. The one issue with credit scores is that unless you take on debt or the instruments of debt to build a credit history, you can't get a good credit score, that is problematic.

My daughter's previous employers (An Accountancy Firm; we're in the UK) had a rule that no-one should discuss their salary. My daughter, who'd worked there nearly 10 years, and was a senior to a new guy that had recently started, found out he was on £4,000 more p.a. than she was, when he was telling her how chuffed he was with his pay (she was training him re: software used). She confronted them and demanded a pay rise - they offered a £2,000 increase. She started looking for another job, and mentioned it to one of their big clients whose account she was in charge of, and they asked if she wanted to work for them and was offered a salary that was £7,000 p.a. more than her previous one. So she got the pleasure of seeing them lose their client, too. :-D

The issue can be that companies pay better wages to higher performers, or people with more experience, better qualifications to do the same job.. and so discussing your wage can dis-incentivize companies to pay the best people more and then you end up with union type wage scales, where hard work isn't rewarded, tenure is. After years working in unionized jobs, i quickly realized that in many cases, people were actively discouraged from working harder than was absolutely necessary by colleagues who were ardently pro-union while simultaneously being discouraged by a rigid wage scale that didn't reward skill or hard work. If your company wants to pay you more to do the same job but better, telling people about it isn't a great idea.

On the flip side, not everything is picture-perfect. Most people believe the U.S. healthcare system is one of the worst among developed nations. Unlike many other countries that offer universal healthcare, America’s system is largely privatized, making medical expenses sky-high. A simple hospital visit can turn into a financial nightmare.

This wealth transfer was subtle at first, but has been happening on a regular basis now for so long, that it's simply become business as usual. We are entrenched in it now, and getting free of it would require the concerted effort of the House and Senate, which we will not get, because they directly benefit from it.

Yupp. One of the reason that work with a "caring" aspect (especially health care, but also kid and elderly related stuff) is chronically underpaid. Those who work there do so, because they value the gratitude given to them and know that their work/help is needed (and thus will still be working under atrocious conditions) AND volunteers will cost even less money, partly replacing the underpaid carers and inadvertantly devaluating their work even more.

To the list of "not tried" should be things like treating diseases and help with temporary hardship. There is so much lost potential when you make a system where even the smallest bump in the road can lead to financial ruin and permanent damage to bodies, which could have been prevented at a far lower cost if delt with sooner.

I agree with the level of disgust with the Healthcare system. Its putrid for sure. But there is a Venn diagram where people who oppose cold blooded murder, intersects with those who believe in a woman's right to choose, intersects with those who believe in responsible gun ownership. In some States those same people have carry permits. I think change should be made via legislation versus bloodshed. Surprised (not really) this sick talk is allowed, but BP blurs out other less innocuous content. The boomers this website blasts (not me, I'm too young) knew how to bring about change and it was not at gun point.

He was dead within a year, leaving a wife with two very young children. And they had no medical insurance after he was fired, so she had to hold a fundraiser to pay off the medical bills. He was young, so hadn't paid insurance for 40 years, but it doesn't matter how long you pay in, it's gone if you lose that job.)

If they took away the money from the military, stopped putting their noses in other countries problems, and put it into working on a health care system that benefits the citizens, things would work out a lot better. They don't need to be in a war that they have no business being in.

Technically plants and animals exist solely for the purpose of reproduction. All life is just here to create more life. People create all the problems that we complaint about. But it's not that I created my problems, it's society. The real problem is that individuals don't carry enough to actually do something. Or we don't have the power to do it. And as I step off myself box, I'm going back to reading board panda instead of doing something about it, because I'm just like everyone else.

"My daughter has set up an auto debit for this. I assume your goal is to disregard this so as to charge late fees and increase your interest, which is ALREADY 12.5%. Apparently that's not enough and you should be prosecuted. Believe me when I say I am working very hard to have your rates declared usurious by the DOE and my Representative in Washington. I know plenty of people are in favor of loan forgiveness. I have two objections. One is that it unfairly provides a benefit only to people who currently have loans and not people who paid theirs off already. Or people who never took out alone because they worked their way through college or because they decided they couldn't afford to go to college and instead of taking out loans they just went and got a job. The other reason is that some people went through college and took out loans that they knew they couldn't afford when they got out of college, and then they turned out not to be able to afford the loans and they want the government to pay for them. I went through college and I took out loans, but I might have gone to a more expensive college if I knew the government was going to pay for my loans. And then I paid my loans off, I did so ahead of schedule and wow also starting a family. I did that despite starting out working only part-time, and a few years later getting laid off.

I'm in favor of free college moving forward. And I'm in favor of any program that equally distributes wealth to the lower classes. But if you're going to forgive someone's debt today, why not pay me back some of what I paid 20 years ago? And why not give somebody who couldn't get into college because they didn't have the money the same amount and tell them to go back to college now? If you're going to do something to change the past, it needs to be fair across everyone. If you're going to do something to change the future, it needs to be accessible to everyone in the future. But if you're going to pick only the people who took out too many loans and ended up with the nice education and the high salary but now can't afford to pay the loans back, maybe your money could be better spent teaching financial education. Neither my high school nor my college taught me to do taxes, I learned it on my own.

Inflation is not a measure of the cost of goods. It's a measure of the increasing price of the cost of goods. Say prices have been going up by 1-2 percent per month for a few months and then slows to less than a percent. Inflation has slowed, but that doesn't mean any prices are going to fall. Once inflation happens it's irreversible, largely due to greedy billionaires and corporations.

I will never get this. In denmark where i live, you have to take your vacation days.. last year i had 12 days left in november. I was told to take them all before the end of the year by my boss. You can have 5 days transferred to the next vacation year although most companies want to avoid this, because it just pushes the problem forward. Under very rare circumstances can they pay out the days. I tried this once when i had been out for 12 weeks(paid) due to surgery. I didnt want 3 week summer vacation after being away for so long, i just wanted to get back into my daily routine.

That's more or less all of Europe. "problems" about vacation only arise in summer and around Christmas when it needs to be made sure that not whole teams are gone at once. You don't beg for your vacation, you just announce that you are going to take it and if necessary your boss tells you that it's not a good time and you work out something together, in good faith. In Europe, colleagues don't give each other vacation days because someone is ill, our cooperation is along the lines of "Oh, you worked last Christmas and I had the days off, so this year it's your turn."

That's something everyone has had in common with previous eras. The kings, queens, lords etc will always live better than the poor serfs, workers, farmers, tradespeople etc. The wealthy always live off the backs of poorer people. They live in comfort with plenty of food while the poor live in one room shacks, finding it hard to stay alive from day to day. Nothing has really changed.

This brought to mind the paper linked to below. It's been a while since I read it, but my take was that romantic love was discouraged in the middle ages because it undermined devotion to the monarchy, nobility and clergy. Many thanks to Eleanor of Aquitaine! I've come to think of her as the first feminist, though surely others preceded her. https://web.archive.org/web/20081006185918/http:/www.illinoismedieval.org/ems/VOL5/graybill.html

It’s not racism so much as carelessness. When you don’t ask but just take action on how someone looks, this is what happens. The same with the Japanese internment camps, almost all citizens. There were people here (many people) of German descent in WW2, not put in camps because they didn’t look different. The same is about to happen again under the Orange Tyrant. Do you really think when they go in gestapo style and round up “immigrants” that they will be asking to see documentation?

Being "pro-Palestine" is exactly synonymous with being pro-genocide of every Jew, Baha'i, Yezidi, Ahmadi, atheist, and other non-Muslim currently living in Israel, because Hamas' stated goal is to eradicate every Jew and "infidel" from the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity and install an Islamic dictatorship where Israel used to be. Hamas spies on ordinary Gazans. They don't believe in human rights or democracy. There hasn't been an election in Gaza in 25 years. They have forbidden public expressions of Christianity, and murdered the owner of the last Christian bookstore in Gaza several years ago. Hamas members summarily execute people on the street for crimes real and imagined, like stealing food, being gay, or "collaborating with Israel." These are not the good guys, and you're a useful idiot if you think so.

No, it was not considered normal, just like on Married With Children, nobody knew how they could afford that big house on a shoe salesman's salary. Now, you could (and still can) make a pretty good living without going to college. There are trades you can get into that will pay pretty good. I don't know what Simpson did for a living, but whereas things are pretty terrible now, you have to be realistic about the past and stop spreading myths. Not everything on TV is real, I hate to break it to you.

In 1989, Reactor Operators (junior, not senior) made over $50/hr, easily. Care to guess why? TVA couldn't get enough US Navy vets to fill the ranks as much as they wanted. SROs would make over $70/hr. So yes, this was most certainly plausible.

79,000 in 1980 is 309,672 today adjusted for inflation. federal minimum wage in 1980 was 3.10, roughly 47.6K a year. if it was adjusted for inflation, that would need to be 12.15 in 2025 to be making around 186.6K to keep up with no changes to the market outside direct adjustment for inflation. federal min wage is 7.25, around 111K, over 70K short to just directly keep up. not to improve anything. not for a better home. not for anything extra. just to be at the exact same level.

    income/gas = 26,111. $3.00/gallon = $78K income. Seems normal.

Gasoline is actually pretty cheap when you compare it to a lot of other things. Gas in my area is a hair over $3.00 per gallon right now. Store brand seltzer is $3.40 if I buy it in 1 liter bottles. I'd probably be happier of gas was $3.50 but stayed the same price instead of constantly bouncing up and down.

If Khamenei says you're doing the right thing, you should stop what you're doing immediately and start doing the opposite. Let me remind you that if the Arabs had accepted Partition in 1935 or 1947, none of this would have happened. If the Arabs had accepted a peace deal at any time -- of the many times it was offered -- none of this would have happened. If, in 1948, the Arabs hadn't listened to Arab leaders who said "Get out of the way of our armies now, and you can have the Jews' stuff after we push them into the sea," and had stayed as the Jews asked them to, and had been okay with the idea of living alongside Jews in the binational state envisioned by Israel's original founding documents -- and may I remind you, the ones who did stay became full Israeli citizens -- none of this would have happened. If the Arab world hadn't attacked Israel again in 1967 and 1973, and continued to fund, train, and incite terrorist attacks against Israel ever since, none of this would have happened.

On the other hand, the Orange Overlord supports Isreal. If Trump is on your side, you should stop doing what you're doing immediately and start doing the opposite. Let me remind you, that if Israel hadn't been artificially forced into Palestine, none of this would be happening. However you want to try to spin this, Isreal is the problem and ISREAL is the aggressor.

Alright Fox, let's do that again after tariffs, bird flu and fossil dependence have pushed up inflation for four years.

And let's also ignore that housing prices are a direct result of a massive inventory shortage which is a direct result of us not building housing after the 2008 subprime mortgage economic collapse which is a direct result of Republicans.

Well Yea... Rates went up... 3% was definitely not the norm back in the day, heck, before rates tanked like 10 years ago, they were like 6.5, try 8-13% in the 80's/90's...

It's not genetics. There's nothing inherent in you stopping you. It's an accident of birth, namely not being born to wealthy parents. With the same natal wealth you could achieve anything the rich can.

I think you missed the point of this one. Because of healthcare costs in USA, a person could dream of their life goals and things to achieve, but because they have a genetic condition that requires expensive medical care, they now have to abandon all their life goals and dreams so they can spend their life paying medical bills.

The original Reddit post is about the lies from Fox news Laura Ingraham about the amount of relief for disaster victims. She said they would ONLY receive $750 but the Kamala Harris interview had been cut to make it sound this way.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fNhVpRPBX4
