Not every building is as beautiful as the Palace of Versailles. Or blends into its surroundings as well as the Macallan Distillery. On the contrary, there are many structures across the world looking like outcasts that will fall apart during the next storm. In some places, they aren't isolated examples, either — even an entire neighborhood can be an abomination. And you can find them on r/UrbanHell.

It's a photography subreddit of "all the hideous places human beings built or inhabit." The online community invites everyone who wants to explore the darker side of the cities, towns, and villages in our shared world and welcomes any photos which show either ugliness, or a problem in urban development. Rural and suburban nightmares are also allowed.

Below you will find a collection of pics that perfectly describe what this subreddit is all about.

Yup--but we know that most folks will look at this & think "Those People"--not thinking about the trash or pollution they themselves generate-- in north america we pay a lot of people to "Clean" it up for us--but have you noticed that everyday there is Fresh trash in the streets/parks ect -Someone else cleans it up so we just keep dumping it anywhere-Just look at all the masks /fast food garbage ect ect in parking lots ect ect-- Gotta keep the car clean but to lazy to put stuff in the garbage can-

AMEN SISTAH! That is so very true...just go SCUBA diving almost anywhere on the planet and the plastic is always there. I've been diving since 1968, and worked with an Underwater Cinematographer and have been diving all over. It has gotten SO MUCH WORSE. I fear for every living being. It has to stop!

We humans don't deserve to live on this earth. It's crumbling around us and still "we" are destroying the oceans, wildlife and ignoring global warming. There's this fixation with 2050, all will be okay. Well - 2050 WILL BE TOO LATE.

But it is think about how much Carbon dioxide we put into the air and smog that causes health risks that shorten the life expectation so let's start small by cleaning Beaches and polluted inland areas and plant trees and clean waters use less electricity and water because we can't just have a few groups and except it to solve it we need almost everyone to come together and help.

    It's all effect - lens, zoom and angle. If you were to stand in that place it would look nothing like that. It might seem a little bleak, but this image was deliberately taken in a way so as to -EMPHASISE- a depiction of poverty. It's a bit like taking a zoom shot of an open wound with necrotic infection and presenting that as representative of healthcare. It's very dishonest. And when you take into account that this is obviously somewhere in China and that things look like that in China not because there's no money but because of a cultural attitude that says public space is "not my responsibility", is "someone else's responsibility", then the lie is even more insidious. You see nice cars, restaurants, so could conclude everyone's fine, but you see dirty walls and squirm, but that's just your prejudice. And though large numbers of people in relatively small spaces is normal for any large city, that this image enhances the effect, along with the grime, leads your mind to false conclusions, which is again borne of your prejudice. And while prejudice is not a bad thing in and of itself (despite the noise of hordes of excitable, simple-minded dumbards), at least know it for what it is.

    Hong Kong is actually a lovely place to live. It's right on the bay, lovely sea breeze in fall and spring, blue skies and great transportation. Lots of parks and hiking trails in the forest literally minutes from Central/downtown. Nothing about this is sad except what the photographer CHOSE to show you, how they edited the photo, and your narrow impression based on a single photo.

    I am not an engineer so I hope someone with Expertise will read it and maybe provide an answer. I always asked myself how is it possible for this building not to collapse? I mean they look so bridle and run down. Of course I hope they won't collapse. As I visit Russia regular I see similar buildings and every time I ask myself this question.

    About half of the global population already lives in cities, and by 2050, two-thirds of the world's people are expected to live in urban areas. But as you can see from some of the photos in r/UrbanHell, in cities, two of the most pressing problems facing the world today also come together: poverty and environmental degradation.

    Bad urban development isn't just ugly aesthetics. It's also poor air and water quality, insufficient water availability, waste-disposal problems, and high energy consumption, all of which are exacerbated by the increasing population density and demands of urban environments. Strong city planning is essential in managing these and other difficulties as the world's urban areas grow.

    There were several places where this is the case. You can't act like we're not destroying our planet by calling it a hoax when you see s**t like this, but ppl still do. It's not the citizens of the world, but the corporations. There's nothing we can do to fix this as long as corporations & factories keep doing this s**t. They try to tell us it's our fault and how to fix it, but are extremely unwilling to take even an ounce of responsibility across every continent ... it's f*****g disgusting. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jul/10/individuals-climate-crisis-government-planet-priority https://behavioralscientist.org/if-you-care-about-the-environment-stop-feeling-guilty-feel-angry-instead/

    i lived many years in Oregon, where i helped to edit some videos on logging on public lands. They cut down old growth trees and sold them whole to be taken to japan to be ground up for diapers. not to mention the sickness that is the US military in the 1940s developing the atom bombs, and with very little testing or understanding they incinerated 2 entire cities in Japan when japan, an island country, had nearly been cleaned out of anything in the factories and munitions already, all those thousands of citizens old men women and babies were turned to dust or burnt to suffer terrible effects, and we have not really been held accountable nor apologized, and its an act of violence that has not been equaled, yet we sit here all proud to be american. then lets go bigger; how about the number of seriously flawed nuke plants all over the world, yet nobody seems too concerned about reducing their carbon footprint. the greedy bastard society is standing on gaias neck.

    Hitler killed more people then those 2 bombs combined. We didn't apologize because it was during a war. I don't condone use of nuclear weapons at all and don't agree with our severe military response. Japan did attack us first killing many young soldiers never declaring war until hours later. We asked them for a peaceful resolution and even gave the revised terms of only stop and surrender your military only. We do not want your country nor do we want to even enter. They declined, insisting on continued attacks on our military and our country. Their leader so recognized his error he committed suicide as an apology to his people. We did go to Japan to sign the surrender and end of war docs and immediately helped with injured and sick. We also helped rebuild their cities. Their citizens were lied to by their own government about American soldiers. They were terrified because they were bombarded with pamphlets that had pics of our GI's with dog heads eating babies and worse.

    Some of the biggest problems caused by urbanization are:

    • Intensive urban growth can lead to greater poverty, with local governments unable to provide services for all people;
    • Concentrated energy use. It leads to greater air pollution with a significant impact on human health;
    • Automobile exhaust produces elevated lead levels in urban air;
    • Large volumes of uncollected waste create multiple health hazards;
    • Urban development can magnify the risk of environmental hazards such as flash flooding;
    • Pollution and physical barriers to root growth promote loss of urban tree cover;
    • Animal populations are inhibited by toxic substances, vehicles, and the loss of habitat and food sources.

    Real problem is stupidity of 'planning dept.' If you replace every fourth row with one containing appropriate family friendly stuff (grocery story, cheap restaurant, park/bicycle path, bowling alley, pool, drug store), you turn a automobile focused hell hole into a neighborhood.

    I was there in 1991 and can confirm image on left, just would add a couple more though between building in foreground and extreme background. In 1968 it was all desert. In '91 I saw the original ruler's quarters next to the oldest mosque in dubai: a mud dome with threadbare rugs and big fat koran, and the quarters were literally a 2 story mud and hay slap together with wood poles internally (rather than rebar) and some neurotic child had scrawled porn all over it.

    TRUE THAT! I had a 96 Toyota Avalon that had 350,000+ miles on it when I sold it back in 2017, and that engine still purred. I did use quality synthetic motor oil when I had the oil changed. Toyota's are a great value!

    Dubai needs door-to-door transport. The daytime temperature means it’s residents want to spend as little time as humanly possible outdoors. Even where options exist to walk (and they do - even SZ Rd has footpaths), people there will drive to get to the building across the road if it means they will spend less time without aircon. Getting fresh air there is a real challenge.

    Pretty accurate depiction of the Trump Preferred Way of Life. The obscene opulence for the few, right up against the abject poverty, filth, trash, and utter despair of the many—-on whose backs the fortunes of those few were made, and are still being made. Oh, and rubbing in the noses of the many, to boot. Who TF puts a billboard like this on a street like this, unless they have a callous, insensitive, and patently unfunny sense of humor.

    TRUMP SUCKS! This advertisement speaks volumes, nay, TOMES!!! So happy he is no longer our President. We are doing so much better as a nation now, thanks to President Joe Biden. Whether you want to admit it or not. You right wing conservatives KNOW it's the truth, and that Trump is still a bigot, hater, demoralizer, divider of nations...

    I was so incredibly sad when he got Covid and didn't die. Hopefully he'll be wiped off this planet before 2024 since it looks like Republicans have decided to take an even bigger low in their views as they want to actually put this abomination back in Office, as if there isn't another Republican who wouldn't be so f*****g dangerous to, not only the States, but the rest of the f*****g world, they could get behind. I mean when the rest of the world laughs at and loathes your Country's dim witted choice, you, and I mean Republicans, and only Republicans, (since the rest of us are not this dense, nor do we have a death wish), know you've truly f****d up

    Yeah I'm sorry but doesn't India have its own government and organisations , I wish Indians themselves would complain this much about their president maybe that would make a change , the guy is a business man , and street persons always migrate they probably weren't there before when it was put up , he is just advertising just like alcohol companies do , Trump Tower would bring about more job opportunities for the locals thought of that , I'm not defending the man but sometimes don't let one person be a scape goat , yes he was a bad president but there are so many other politicians who have done much worse and still try and hide , India has its OWN GORVENMENT why aren't they handling such crippling poverty but no let trump be the one to take the fall.

    He literally came from poverty and had to sell tea to help his father during school! He's done so much for the people correcting the rot of decades and that's the reason his party increased their total votes from last election by 57 million....that's more than the combined population of Spain and Portugal and 1.9X the votes received by 2nd largest party. Get your news from better sources.

    Solutions might include:

    • Combat poverty by promoting economic development and job creation;
    • Involve local community in local government;
    • Reduce air pollution by upgrading energy use and alternative transport systems;
    • Create private-public partnerships to provide services such as waste disposal and housing;
    • Plant trees and incorporate the care of city green spaces as a key element in urban planning.

    Rather callous to call them fools. They may not even realize the dangers. Remember, somebody where you live had to be the one to realize just how bad swimming in frothing industrial waste could be. Hell, the Cuyahoga River had to catch fire (the water itself, not logs or other debris floating on top of it) for it to sink in here in the US—-and even then, 1969, it took decades to enact and enforce legislation requiring massive cleanup, and it’s not completely clean yet.

    Ummm I'm from this country and I'm disgusted. The rivers in India are polluted ruthlessly by religious people as well as industries. Its saddening how the actual lifelines are getting destroyed by the people themselves and then these people think God can solve everything. Literally no one will.

    I got curious "...Yamuna Pollution... at least 90% of domestic wastewater in the city flows into the Yamuna. The wastewater mainly comes from household activities hence the presence of high content of detergent, laundry chemicals, and phosphate compounds."

    Same with the Ganges - people take religious bath in water that's considered highly toxic to any kind of lifeform

    Ganga has been cleaned up a lot. Largely because new govt is taking efforts. There are lot of illegal industries which operate around rivers which just dump their waste in rivers. Back in 2017, a state govt asked all illegal slaughterhouses to shut. It caused a meat crisis in the state! In 1 region it was revealed that out 126 slaughter houses that existed, only ONE had the valid permission to operate. Only 21 bothered to put up treatment plants!! That's why the current political party is popular in India, though Western media paints them to be villains - they get some things done that is good for country, correcting the rot of decades. Most political parties just operate like family business.

    YUCK. But FYI, the main component of the toxic waste is phosphate... formely sold in the U.S. as dish or laundry detergent. Terrible for the environment, but these people aren't exactly being suicidal. In fact, the government's larger problem with the "idol dipping" is the further damage to the environment, not the harm done to the human dippers. (They leave the idols in the river to dissolve by the millions.)

    I don't think these poor people should swim in laundry or dish detergent then. Regular soap sometimes dries out my hands. Think of rashes, inflammation, blindness, asthma, etc. Also, why was phosphate no longer used in U.S? Is it carcinogenic or like talcum? Also, do you know if this river has any harmful additives in it? Like 'fragrance,' a black box that can hold too much? (Not meaning to be rude or anything)

    Its not a nuclear cooling tower. It is for a heating, electric and hotwater generating plant ( TETS in Russian) most are coal or gas powered and that is for releasing steam.
