I brought my youngest to university too. He was a newborn so he was either breastfeeding or sleeping. I stayed in the back. I did talk to all my professors beforehand to ask permission.

What blows my mind is that there are so many different flavors of sign language. If there was ever a chance to create a language that all people would be able to understand, it should be sign language. I do understand that different cultures have different gestures and body language, but I think that someone who is deaf/mute should be able to communicate with any other people. I would love if we created a universal sign language that was taught to everyone, so that communicating with any person would be easier.

It's great, but as someone who uses sign language- I don't understand how it would work well? BSL (and I've been told this is the case for other sign languages too) is more than just hand signals. It's body language, it's hand movements at the same time as face movements. Various words use the same sign and it all depends on context whether you want to sign "my mum is home" or "my may is home" as they both have the same sign. We know from context what word the sign means, but a computer programme wouldn't and anyone who doesn't know BSL doesn't know that "mum" and "may" are the same sign so if the system reads "mum" it could mean "may" (or month, meter etc etc) and so be confused. The best way to understand sign language is to learn it.

If it is anything close to accurate that is impressive. But even if inaccurate it's a start. Sign language varies some by country but using the US, since that is what I know, most deaf people use ASL and much of what is said does not translate directly from the sign. Context matters a lot. For comparison, think of all the oral phrases / slang in English that are not literal. "Kick the bucket" "Hit me up" She is using a different country's sign language but presumably the concept is similar. The first three basic signs match ESL and ASL. But the "no" sign is different than ours.

From his 34 years in the field of science, chartered biologist Mark Janes finds that the most peculiar thing about our world is that life, at its heart, is ridiculously simple, even though it doesn’t seem that way.

Such realization dawned on him during his first lecture studying organic chemistry at college. “The lecturer said organic chemistry was the bedrock of the life sciences and carbon was the star of the show. He went on and on and on about how carbon was the backbone, core, or blueprint of life and had incredible properties.”

"Bird brain" shouldn't be an insult. They are sometimes smarter, more perceptive, and better communicators than people.

    OneWithRatsAndKefir

1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It seems bird-brain has been used as an insult from the 1910s, likely because of the literal small size of the brain (though our science has improved enough to know that small brains don’t necessarily mean small minds, rather it is the number of neurons or the size of the brain in comparision to the body). However, an older version of bird-brain, bird-witted, has seemingly been in use since the 1600s! Anyway, sorry for the fact rant, but your comment made me wonder where the exact origin of bird-brain came from; still no clue, but I might delve into it more later.

Parrots aren't even the smartest birds, they just happen to be the best at copying humans. Corvids actually seem to be one the most intelligent types of birds. Crows, ravens, and magpie often demonstrate critical thinking skills that most people would only attribute to humans. Corvids have shown the ability to build tools and develop significant social circles, even with other species. Corvids actually have the ability to mimic human speach, just like parrots, but are less likely to. Parrots are the avian equivalent of a dog. They are easy to train, and they know that they depend on you, so they submit. Corvids are the avian equivalent of a cat. They know that they could easily destroy you and make you submit, so as long as you do want they want, they will be happy being adored, and maybe they will talk to you.

Flour usually came in white sacks. Those were often turned into underwear or dish towels. Animal feed came in the colorful bags. It brought more women to feed stores, where they'd have the employees slinging bags around until enough were collected for a project. Happened in my family. We still have a quilt made of clothes that used to be sacks. Most farms needed several bags of feed at a time, making it quite lucrative for the feed mills if there were a lot of kids to clothe!

Once the lecturer moved on to draw a typical diagram of a carbon atom, Janes thought to himself, "Ok, if carbon is the blueprint and base of all life, do I look like anything like this image?”

The lecturer started explaining it by saying, “Carbon has a nucleus with 12 particles,” and Janes thought, “Well, my brain is clearly the nucleus of my body, and it breaks down to 12 cranial nerves; the numbers matched.”

Oklahoma is home to 38 federally recognized tribes, 14.2% of our citizens is Native American which is the highest in the Nation and 26 indigenous languages are spoken in Oklahoma. I'm a PROUD member of Cherokee Nation from my Mom's side of the family, Grandma Lily was 1/2, Mom was a 1/4 which made things very interesting and incredibly tough for her side of the family, especially when Mom was growing up. There has been recent and extremely important laws about our lands made by the Supreme Court that I encourage people to read about them. Yes, I'm on the Cherokee Roll and have my "Indian" card, so I'm not blowing smoke up your a*s or appropriating someone else's culture.

Only a very small part of the white immigrants were legal and bought their land fair and square. The vast majority invaded the area of the US uninvited and forcibly (aka colonized) and - opposite to current illegal immigrants - did not do work the natives didn't want to do. Those immigrants killed the natives, stole from them and ruined the environment. Maybe this is the reason why a population consisting almost entirely of descendants of immigrants, hates today's immigrants so much. The fear of them doing the same as their ancestors did?

The trail of tears is regrettable, but the worst thing that European settlers did to the native population is to introduce diseases that the native population had no antibodies to. Pestilence spread through the native population because things like smallpox had never been an issue for them. European settlers didn't " win the war" against the native population because they were better than them, they won because they were using biological warfare before anyone knew what it was

"The one-child policy had been introduced in 1979 in an attempt to control the size of China's rapidly growing population and alleviate poverty. Couples living in cities could have only one child, while those in rural areas could have a second if the first was a girl. Couples who wanted a son to carry on the family surname and take care of them in old age could no longer keep trying for a boy; they would face stiff fines and their additional children would be denied social benefits. The policy is believed to have contributed to a rise in the number of child abductions, especially of boys. But Jingzhi knew nothing about this. https://www.bbc.com/news/stories-53566460

Even when I was a smoker, before I switched to vaping YEARS ago, NEVER was given extra breaks even though one manager was a smoker. That was something you did on your standard break and lunch, especially when I worked in the middle of the Health Complex. You had to go off campus if you wanted to light up or vape and since the surrounding buildings had the same policy it left very few options for you to go too as well. You had to wait until the end of your shift, when you were in your car and off campus. Since you only had standard breaks, there wasn't enough time to walk off campus, smoke or vape, then make it back to your building within the 2- 15 Minute breaks or 30 minute lunches that you are allotted.

The way this is worded implies Barry/Bulkley was transgender. That is not the case. She had to hide her true identity as women were not allowed to serve in the military at that time, nor were they allowed to be surgeons.

"He said carbon has four bonds, or limbs, and I had four limbs bonding to the surroundings in a shared, covalent way. The valance shell also breaks down into eight parts, four from carbon and four others from other atoms, making eight called the octet rule. I realized my limbs had an upper and lower part, making eight. Everything fitted, and there was a lot more than that.”

How does a 3-year-old student fall down a mine shaft in the first place? Seems like there was some kind of negligence somewhere in this story. Who thought it was a good idea to let these kids near a dangerous mine shaft and why was there no barrier keeping people from getting to close?

But the wooden planks meant to seal it off from the workings deep underground had rotted. Hidden in a copse of trees, Jannic plunged straight down - followed by his teacher."

Or Brits if we’re to be honest. I was wondering when the USA bashing was gonna happen. I mean, it’s a nation comparatively the size of Europe minus Russia with a similar population and just as much diversity. So much diversity in such a large population that the gross generalization can be nothing more than racist, xenophobic hatred & some twisted form of resentment. Can you imagine speaking to a Kosovo Serb whilst imagining the stereotypical British annoying behaviors and telling them “all you Europeans are alike”????? Cos that’s the ignorance & stupidity that comes with stereotyping Americans. Yes, some are loud & obnoxious & many dress obvious when traveling. But I guarantee there are many many more you didn’t notice because they aren’t discernible. And as a Dutch national and US national that has lived equally in each country: P**s off!

Swiss here. In some villages (not the cities), the inhabitants have to approve your citizenship. This happens during a town hall meeting. So the woman, Nancy Holten from Netherlands, was campaigning against cows wearing cowbells (which sound lovely to me but are quite heavy and loud) and that annoyed the hell out of the locals. I swear I am not making this up. She did get the Swiss passport later on.

Hah. Well not exactly. To apply for citizenship you need to first do so at the commune/gemeinde (local town council) in which you've been living for a minimum set time (five years where we are) and a notice will be published, to which any other residents can object. There was a famous case of rejection a few years back that made the headlines, a Dutch lady IIRC, who complained about church bells amongst other things, but she was eventually granted citizenship.

This is exactly why logic and science should always be the first approach to something "unexplained." Just because you want it to be some kind of "devine sign from above", it doesn't mean that the sign isn't just saying "Please inspect the toilet upstairs."

We had an awesome black cat that was skittish around strangers and even people who came over often. He had manageable health issues but after a scare he was the only one allowed on the dining room table (never while eating , he was good about that). He always head butted my husband and me, mostly holding his forehead to yours and then nuzzled noses. Some friends that came over often and he tolerated and would come out and walk around and let them pet him knew they were loved when he would jump on the table during game night, walked around to the 4 of us and finally did the head butt to them. You’ve never seen such an excited beer drinking NASCAR loving man practically in tears❤️😂

Because people ignore recorded warnings, and wave it off as just another earthquake, eh whatever. That being said, she was in a third floor building, and there was clear access to the roof, which everyone thought was high enough, but the tsunami completely covered the building, only a few people survived by clinging to the radio antennas.

I visited that area about 2 or 3 years after the tsunami, when the wreckage was mostly cleared but subsequent new facilities not yet built. It was so sad to see the scope of the disaster up close. The building where Miki Endo lost her life was nothing but girders and a little concrete. A nearby area building (part of a concrete building connected to the canal system for irrigation) had the high water mark on it; it was more than 10 meters. Seeing that gave me a real life understanding of what all of these people faced on that day.

I was curious as to when this happened and after doing some research, it is said that between 1725-1765, she and her husband, Feodor had 69 children. Of those 69, 67 of them survived infancy, which is a miracle in and of itself given the time period. The father apparently went on to have another 18 kids, with his second wife, making him the father of 87. Imagine if he had to pay child support for all of them? Haha

Sigh. NO NO NO NO!!!!!! The DNA DID match her own, but as if she were their Aunt, not mother. The sets of DNA were NOT "Complete and different", the two sets of DNA shared 50% of the DNA that varies between people, because the woman was a chimera of two sisters. There is absolutely no possibility that a chimera can exist between two unrelated people. People actually believe that chimeras are made up of two unrelated sets of DNA, because of people like the OP.

Such a great cover. I'm generally not fond of songs that change things around from the original but IZ's version of it is one of my 'goosebump' songs. You can find it on spotify and YT. Youtube has a video that has that sound track and the visual is some clips / photos of him and parts of his memorial ceremony. It's kind of a sweet watch. Hey, so your comment made me curious about which was ‘correct’, swum or swam, since they’re both actual words. It turns out that ’swam’ is the past tense of swim, while ‘swum’ is the past participle. Swum is used after ‘have’, as in "I have swum in that pool before. So in this case, you would seemingly be right that the word should be ‘swam’. Anyway, swum and swam no longer look like actual words to me.

This is why they need the sleep... 7:30am-5:00pm!!!! I had to google it... "Children attend school five days a week. The school hours depend on the grade and the area, but, usually, kids start their days at 7:30 or 8:00 and finish at about 17:00. The school year in China typically starts in September and ends in late June or July."

Maybe that IS what keeps him together and sane. I read somewhere that he found unexpected solace in this and that in the ocean he feels closer to her, while also being aware of the fact that there's very little chance he would recover any of her remains. Also that he only dives once a week and helped recover many other things lost during the tsunami - people's belongings, the such.

He is awsre of that from what I read on some site with his story. But it is said that he found some solace in doing this, so I'm glad this at least helps him live with her loss. They said he only found her phone on land in a parking lot with an unsent message to him and, after searching everywhere on land, he turned to the ocean as the only place left to search.

I've never understood how men can juggle 2 wives without them knowing about each other. How in the hell can you find the time to have 17 girlfriends and they don't know about each other?! If you have a job then that takes up even more time. How do you keep them from showing up to your house at the same time or one calling while you're with a different girlfriend? I'm really confused at how he pulled this off and for how long.

I don't think people are "sent to" nutrition and exercise professionals. Maybe asked if they want to talk to someone, but it's completely optional. Japan tried to cut down on obesity by fining companies that had too many overweight employees, but there have been complaints that it's leading to discrimination, so they may not do this much longer.

PBS Nova did a show on obesity. The sumo wrestlers, though fat, were extremely healthy because their fat was outside their thoracic and abdominal cavity. They work out 6-8 hours a day. Only after retirement do metabolic diseases start creeping in. Also for women, benefits of exercise are cumulative, so we keep the benefit longer. This is from an article I read

Japanese people are more petite than Americans. And that isn't a fat joke. I'm curious what the average waist measurement of fit Americans would be. I do realize the US gene pool is much more diverse than Japan. I am 5' 10". In high school my waist was 34". I have big bones (for real, not a fat joke) and was then a pretty muscular farm boy bucking hay bales. My best friend was concerned because she thought I was too skinny. Now I'm an aging potato, but even if I was fit, my waist would be more than 33.5"

I mean 40+ medical screenings are nothing unusual? I live on the other side of the world and had one last month: they do your bloodwork, your bmi etc. etc. Nothing to do with Japan, although I assume the way civilised countries do this may be confusing to some of BP's murican readers.

Probably more like discovered than invented. Water gets into a ceramic jar holding grain, it starts to ferment… after that it’s just optimizing the process and adjusting to taste.

It was probably invented earlier than that. Some anthropologists think the agricultural revolution happened because of beer. Basically, you don't need large fields of grain to feed your family, but you DO need that much grain if you're going to brew it.

Which is why Remembrance Day is on Nov 11th. In Canada, we observe a minute of silence at 11:00am on that day for that reason!

No it didn’t. The war did not end until the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919. The armistice began at 11am on the 11th of November, but the war was still technically going.

Yes, as a Brit working in Germany it was slightly jarring to hear people starting the Karneval season as we were thinking about a minute's silence in memory of the war dead. But having said that, I find Britain's morbid fascination with WWI and WWII highly distasteful now. I would prefer it if there was more emphasis on building bridges of peace between nations and peoples for the future instead of glorifying victories in years gone by.

Which was a catastrophically stupid thing to do. Nobody knows how many men died to serve the egos of officers who wanted the “glory” of launching the “final” battle of the war. It’s why when a cease fire agreement is reached now, it’s dispatched and implemented immediately.

    Adam Jeff

Exactly. It had already been obvious for some time that an armistice was coming, even more so for the last 3 days when the German delegation arrived in France to negotiate the final wording. Any commanders who ordered advances in the last few days were absolute d*cks. 2,738 men died on the last day alone.

This was a deliberate decision for symbolism and cost many lives as the war could have ended a few days earlier. Despite knowledge that the war was about to end, some acts - like artillery bombardments - increased. The soldiers knew that they would have to carry all the unfired ordinance back to to base.

There are more than one type of kidney stone. One is calcium oxalate, another is uric acid crystals. My mother had both, even stones that were amalgams of both of these types.

    1) There are different types of kidney stones, caused by different conditions, composed of different materials with different appearances. Admittedly some are more horrific-looking than others. 2) Much of the pain of a kidney stone is caused by the spasming of the the little tube that runs from the kidney to the bladder (ureter) when it is irritated by the stone traveling down it.

I’ve visited it! It’s surreal because the “hotel room” is basically in the center of a large part of the main cave, and the daily tours of the rest of the caverns wind around it. Another area has leftover supplies from when it was a bomb shelter. (You take an elevator down to the caverns).

I tried that website. If the list of ingredients they allow you to choose from is any indication of how people shop and cook in USA, then I'm not surprised they have a nation wide obesity problems. A huge portion of it is ready-made mixes and sweets. Like, none of canned or dried legumes & lentils, but 7 types of premade canned soup... Very little actual herbs and spices, but plenty of mixed seasonings like "taco flavor" and store bought sauces like ranch etc. Then even more premade things - hashbrowns, cheeze its, several kinds of chips, 6 types of highly sugared cereals, all kinds of cake mixes and pie fillings, cookies, chocolates and other sweets... I'm really not impressed.

No. Please tell people this. This post isn’t saying NOT to provide them water, literally EVERYONE knows pets need food and water bowls. People actually SHOULD KNOW THIS about cat kidneys. They’re used to getting most hydration from their food. Some people only feed their cats dry food with a bowl of water next to it and aren’t realizing that their cat is actually becoming dehydrated from that - food should have some moisture in it. Cats don’t have a huge thirst drive, they don’t drink much water, although should always be provided water. TELL PEOPLE THIS PLEASE, especially cat owners, so they know to provide plenty of opportunities for hydration for their cats. Knowledge is the key to responsible pet ownership, not trying to keep people in the dark about how their pet’s health works for some reason 😂 telling people cat kidneys are efficient isn’t going to make anyone stop giving their cats water, jfc 😂

Right? If you have the means to enjoy your life, I think you should do it (responsibly of course). Man could have enjoyed a fancy haircut and a nice hotel once in a while. Seems kind of a shame and a waste that he decided to live the exact same sort of life as anyone else when he had the means to do and experience interesting and fine things most of us will never get a chance to do.

Which is why you don’t have ice in your drinks. The ice machine needs regular cleaning but it’s often tucked out of the way in the back room of a hotel / bar and no one likes the job of cleaning them. I never have ice! Equally if you are travelling in a country in which you only drink bottled water, why would you accept ice that’s made with an unreliable water source?

It's all about how you define 'dirty'. Most such stats just count the number of bacteria present, and do not in any way distinguish harmful from innocuous. Like kitchen worksurfaces "dirtier" than toilet seats, but I know damn well which one I'd not be prepared to eat from,

    David

SOURCE? I dot not believe this 'fact' or at least I question the methodology used. Unless they mean the water coming INTO the toilet, which is basically the same potable tap water in the building. If they don't clean the ice machine, then yeah, it could have more bacteria than tap water.

I solved all but the last two squares of a rubick's cube on my own before I finally looked up how to solve it. I don't think I ever would have solved the last bit on my own. Solving a rubick's cube is as easy as following dance steps, but I think the inventor was a genius, not only for making it, but figuring out how to solve it.

When I was a kid companies or fairs occasionally used to give out these little puzzles with a picture broken up into 4x4 squares with one square missing. The task was to shuffle them around into the right order until the picture was complete again. I never managed it, but was always convinced there was some "algorithm" or pattern to be repeated over and over to make it work. It's the same (in 3D, so more complicated) with the cube.

I was really good at solving Rubik's Cubes when I was a kid. I'd have to take it to an adult to mix it up for me or I'd solve it too quickly. My Aunt Sue was the best, she was super smart and it would take me a lot longer to solve it when she mixed it up. I kind of want to buy one to see if I can still solve them. (RIP Aunt Sue 💜)

……um, that’s not how that works 😂 motorcycle riding, while risky, doesn’t have a greater than 50% chance of death. Do you know what that means? If that were true, it means that more than 50% of people who ride motorcycles should be dead right now. Which is clearly not the case 😂 Reducing the chance of death by 42% does not mean you had a 58% chance of dying. 🤦‍♀️😂

In the medical field, motorcycle drivers who do not wear helmets are known as "organ donors".

There are two instances I know of that people have ridden their motorcycles without helmets to protest helmet laws. They both somehow fell, hit their heads, and died, all because of not wearing a helmet. One in Florida and one in New York.

Technically, they are poisonous. They contain tomatine, which is mildly toxic to humans, but highly toxic to dogs and cats.

Yep! I work for a couple dealerships. A guy came in with $50,000 cash to buy a vehicle. They managed to convince him to finance the vehicle - even though that would cost him more in the long run - because the dealership makes more money when you finance a purchase. They dont like people who come in with cash and pay off a vehicle all at once. Its kind of gross.

Credit car companies make quite enough from the cut they take from the seller without any need to be paid interest. And who does the seller get that money from? The money we pay them.

I refuse to have credit cards. Haven't had any for at least 15 years. Got myself in too much debt as a young woman. Now if I need something, I must pay actual $. If I can't afford it, I must save for it. Credit cards are horrible for young people, in my opinion.

Sure but now that I’m older and pay off my credit card every month, my credit score is almost perfect and I’ve gotten tons of free stuff from my points, even a free flight to Thailand and back. You can refuse to have credit cards if you want, but some people are responsible enough to use them and reap the benefits without going into debt.

That , unfortunately was kind of the point. The military were advised to find a test ground on the East coast where prevailing winds would blow dust away from populated areas in to deep oceans. However the military wanted data on the effects of radiation so chose the west coast and frequently waited for winds to blow toward cities before detonation. There is plenty of evidence and data about this and the role that certain corporations played in keeping it quiet. Sad but kind of expected

Commercial bananas are seedless and propagated exclusively by vegetative means. The banana has a reduced underground stem, called the rhizome, which bears several buds. Each of these buds sprouts and forms its own pseudostem and a new bulbous rhizome. These daughter plants are called suckers. Banana plants are typically propagated through their rhizomes, not seeds. However, wild bananas do have seeds and they are dispersed primarily by animals. Animals eat the fruit and then excrete the seeds in a different location, allowing new plants to grow. https://nhb.gov.in/pdf/fruits/banana/ban011.pdf

Bananas are seedless because we genetically altered them to be able to developed without fertilization. Before that they had great big black seeds all up through the middle. We're slowly getting more seedless apples too. We can't resist messing with stuff we ought not mess with. Meanwhile we fret over the younger generations becoming detached from where their food comes from. We used to grow all kinds of things in the classroom for fun out of the seeds that came from what we'd had for lunch.

My grandpa would have strongly disagreed with this statement. He would cut out the seeds (what he called them) from bananas because he may have choked on them. Truth be told he didn't eat bananas often, most likely because it was too much effort!

What I'll never understand is why scientists have to name things so complicatedly like come on man

Because there is a system. That extremely long name aside, the scientific name of chemicals are actually easier than made up names. They give you additional information about its properties and structure.

3.9 of those years were doing Jack, and the last few days was them stealing the design of Hydrox cookies wholesale.

I really don't buy this one. You're not going to sit around "designing" a cookie for four years when you could just make them and sell them. More likely, the "iconic Oreo design" wasn't finalized until the 4th year of production.

I think it's one of two things 1: The photo is AI generated Or 2: It's another scientist person thingy walking up

🤣 Unless the woman in the image is about 2 feet tall, there is no way those "photographed" bananas are 30cm!

This image is fake AI garbage. The bananas grow to 18 cm (slightly longer than an average cavendish banana), NOT 25-30 cm, nor anywhere near that AI monstrosity. The name comes from the size of the tree, NOT the fruit.

I suspect AI has a slightly skewed idea of what your average New Guinean banana farmer looks like too.

According to the banana scale, this is a photo of the world's smallest person.

I don't care about the size or if the photo is real or not. I want to know how those bananas taste.

There's something fake-looking about that photo, so I found a website selling seeds that includes several pictures. https://www.quintadosouriques.com/store/seeds/fruits/musa-bananas/giant-upland-banana/

And 88% of the population are immigrants, most living under the poverty line. Dubai's poverty rate alone is almost 20%, where the whole entire country of the US is around 11.5%. Interestingly, immigrants represent 14% of the US population in 2021, but represented 24% of those experiencing poverty that year.

Been there, it was boring and very chintzy. The Ibn Buttuta mall is better, it has different sections decorated as a different part of the region. It's more interesting

No this is not accurate. Number glyphs evolved from Indo-Arabic number glyphs, which replaced Roman numerals in Europe: Num_hindu_arabic.gif Num_hindu_arabic.gif

This has been shown time and time again to be a completely unfounded connection to the creation of modern Western numeric script. If you look at the evolution of Indian-to-Arabic-to-European numerals, you can see this has no historical relevance. For example, at no point in historical usage, going back 1,200 years, has the number 9 ever been written or used with angles.
