Some weather we’re having today, huh?
Striking up a conversation about the sunshine or rain might seem cliché, but the weather is genuinely not a bad topic to discuss. Everyone knows about it, is affected by it and has an opinion on it. And if it’s severe, it’s the only thing most of us want to talk about!
We’re well into summer storm season in many countries at the moment, so there’s a good chance you’ve experienced some intense weather recently. But if you haven’t, count your blessings. Because it can be a nightmare to deal with. Bored Panda has gathered photos down below of some of the worst luck people have had with extreme weather. From flooding to snowstorms, Mother Nature never seems to give us a break! So enjoy scrolling through, and be sure to upvote the pics you're glad you didn't take.

Storm Today In Vilnius, Lithuania
That's called a wall cloud. The Midwest gets them all the time. If you see one, get to cover ASAP.
It’s a derecho. If you ever see one, treat it like a tornado. Stay away from windows and take shelter below ground if possible.
Had it last year in my city in July. Four people killed, flooded houses, torn roofs, and countless trees destroyed in less than 15 minutes.

When I first moved to Colorado, I noted some differences. More people had two car garages and a shed. The garages were generally not used for storage. And many cars had this interesting dimpled finish to the hood and roof of the car. A few weeks later, after a up-to-golf-ball sized hailstorm, I understood.
"And many cars had this interesting dimpled finish to the hood and roof of the car." Amen!

Same. Except maybe it's to ease the clinb out over the rockies. Stapleton was much closer to the front range. (Downtown denver here)

I think it's more common out on the eastern plains section. At least, that's where I encountered it. Mostly the NE & E sides for me.. painfully. Motorcycle & hail. Bad combo.
Load More Replies...I remember August 2016 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We had hail at 3:00 PM every. Single. Day. And yet people are just like "WeATHer HAPpenS!" B***h! I was born in '84, this s**t is not normal. The weather has been getting worse every year. Climate change is happening in real time. It's not normal for insane weather to happen in every region every year. That s**t used to happen every 5 years when I was a kid. My grandma said the weather went to s**t every 10 years during her life, and I believe that
I'm born and raised colorado, we have some crazy weather. Alot of people don't think we get tornados but we do and alot of them but mainly out east in the plains. About a week ago I was driving to drop Mt husband off and we got hit hard with hail and rain to the point of everyone pulling over as we couldn't see. Cars under water. It was literally hurricane speed wind with rain and hail
Heading from North Platte back home, on I-76 one summer afternoon, there were three tornadoes in sight. One to the left, one to the right, and one that had been to the left and was now behind me. Throw in the hail and it was a memorable day.

I live in Oklahoma and we can get up to softball size hail. When the May 3, 1999 tornado happened I had to have a new roof put on my house, because softball size hail almost punched holes in my roof. I'm just glad I live in a brick home, and only have a little bit of siding so I didn't have as much damage that some people had to deal with
Wow this can cause lots of damage. At least they're not hot , or we'll be the next dinosaur
As others have said in the comments, "softball sized hail" - OMG - didn't know this existed! How do people and animals live through it?
Death Defying to go out in a storm like that one... bigger than golf balls! OUCH!
When there’s nothing else to talk about, we can always rely on the weather! I mean, it’s literally always there. But have you ever stopped to wonder why that’s the go-to conversation topic? Well, according to Sentient Decision Science, one of the main reasons why is because the weather has such a strong impact on how we feel.
We’re all familiar with the idea of seasonal depression, and it’s likely that you’ve found yourself exceptionally energized on a bright, sunny day. Discussing the topic of weather is an easy way to relate to others, as they probably feel the same way about what’s happening in the sky at the moment. And even if they don’t, you can still discuss what your ideal weather would be and why. This might tell you a lot about a person!
Guess My Neighbor Is Staying Home Today
How in the heck do you remove that many and where do you move them to? For people who don't know, tumbleweed can hurt - it has little spines on it.

It Looks Like It's Only Raining Over One House
I would see this often in southern New Mexico (USA). There were times when it would be pouring in the front yard and sunny and dry in the back yard.
It's cows preventing the people in that house from barbecuing burgers, seen it on TV in a news broadcast that looked a little like a Chick-fil-A commercial.
If you live in a place that actually has four seasons and doesn’t have extremely predictable weather, you might need to carry a raincoat, an umbrella, sunglasses and a hat with you every day, just in case Mother Nature decides to be temperamental. But why does it seem like the weather forecast is rarely correct? I’ve been waiting around for a thunderstorm all day that doesn’t seem to be coming!
The National Weather Service explains on their site that the process of creating the forecast is pretty much the same regardless of the weather. Computer programs analyze the current conditions, and forecasters use their magic (okay, models and years of experience) to predict how those conditions will change in the future. But of course, there’s no way to be 100% sure about what the weather’s going to look like tomorrow.

My 84-year-old neighbor and his wife were sleeping in bed when this more than 20-foot-long tree limb broke off during a wind storm and crashed into their house. This happened around 1:00 AM. They called me for help, and my neighbor was laughing as he explained that the tree limb landed between his legs while he was sleeping on his back on that side of the bed. He crawled back in bed to show me. The limb was inches from his groin area.

Goodbye My Beautiful Cherry Blossom Tree
The tree I used to play in as a child, which held bird feeders and hammocks and many a cat, which would drop so many blossoms in the autumn that me and my dad would make a day of raking them, which gave me shade on a sunny day to read, which stood rain wind and shine for over 30 years.
It was dying for a few years as the roots became infected, but we had some strong wind recently and it was finally felled. Goodbye, old friend.
Awww, I feel bad about this. It's funny how we can get so attached to somewhat inanimate things, but I get this.
It might be inanimate, but it's still a living thing that's brought good memories. It's easy to get attached to special things. ❤️❤️❤️

Oh heck, if a storm killed my apple tree (I chose it at the nursery as a little kid) I'd be crying and doing my best "old man yells at cloud" impression
Oh, no! I wonder if the tree could be uprighted, replanted and carefully staked since some of the roots are still underground? I would surely make the effort! I've seen trees continue live "lying down" on the ground as long as there are roots still attached underground. Definitely pull it upright and give it a try! Plus find out if there is a treatment for "infected roots." Bacteria or toxins, perhaps?
It can be frustrating to not know exactly what the skies will look like in the future, as our plans are often weather-dependent. But as we mentioned previously, the weather can also greatly impact our moods. I love a beautiful, sunny day, but once the weather is hot, I feel lethargic and lazy. I hate getting sweaty just by going outside, and I have much more energy when it’s a bit cooler. I can walk for miles without getting tired as long as it’s not hot!

My Sister Got Struck By Lightning Driving On The Highway
I was always taught that a car is one of the safest places to be in a lightning storm because the tyres insulate and the chassis directs the charge
It's not the tyres, it's that the frame of the car creates a Farraday cage.

My car was hit with me and my 3 kids in it, driving on my road. I heard/felt a zzzzt and then there was a fireball behind us. No one was hurt. The kids weren't even sure of what had happened. The electrical system in the car never quite worked perfectly again. VW Jetta.
The weather can also impact your sleep cycle, as your circadian rhythm can be thrown off by a room that’s too hot or too cold. If your building's heating hasn’t come on yet for the winter, you might be shivering until the morning. And if it’s August and your home has no air conditioning, you might sweat through the whole night. To try to minimize the weather’s impact on your sleep schedule, it’s important to try to get as much sun as possible during the short winter days. And during the summer, make sure you have blackout curtains and a way to keep cool in the evenings.
The Beach Didn't Really Like The Storm
It’ goes back to normal after a few weeks, I used to live for this time of year as a teenager on the Gold Coast
This is why the Dutch have a mostly natural coastline, with undisturbed dunes with plants, keeping the sand in place. On critical points protective structures are built. And for the most part, it is forbidden by law to build buildings on top of the dunes and on the beach. There are a few exceptions, most of them are illegal. But a scenario like this on the background won't happen

I think tornadoes are the scariest form of weather phenomenons!
Haven’t experienced a tornado and they sure look so scary, but I’ve experienced cyclones, earthquakes, and one of the deadliest tsunamis in modern times, and if I had to choose, I will choose to never experience a tsunami again! I can’t swim all that well so it’s understandable but knowing that even professional swimmers have no chance with tsunami waves it’s such a terrifying experience.

I had to save money, but after the May 20, 2013 tornado we had to sit on a waiting list for a year in order to have a storm cellar put in. All of our family and neighbors have access to it and you would be surprised at how many people and animals you can feet into a 8x11 cellar. We ALWAYS make it work and have NEVER turned anyone away.
I do not miss tornadoes. I know they can happen anywhere but they are less likely than where I'm from
A tornado passed through my town. It took down my barn and destroyed part of the University. Unfortunately, it took down a landmark building. Many people were left homeless awhile. Since we do not have a storm shelter, all we could do was sit in the inner room and pray.
I do not miss those days at all! From the time we moved into our house in 84 to 2014, we had years of shutting all of the bedroom/bathroom doors and laying in our hallway. As soon as the weather got bad Mom would take every pillow and comforter to stash in the hallway for us kids. Once the sirens went off there was 7 of us, all laying down with as much padding over us as Mom could find. By the time it was just me and Mom we would clean out our hall closet every spring, because we would cram both of us in there with pillows and blankets. I can't even tell you the MASSIVE amount of relief we felt when we finally had our cellar built.

Hope the trampoline is secured. We heard a loud noise outside from back yard during a rather windy day. Look outside and I yelled to my wife "oh damn, the kids trampoline is in the apple tree" and she come running saying "but we sold the trampoline last year, dont you remember?". Turned out it was the next door familys trampoline. It had blown over the hedge, smacked our grill to the ground and was luckely caught by our apple tree - or it would have continued its journy into our living room window.
It probably won't be easy if you’re looking for a way to avoid extreme weather like we’ve seen on this list, according to How Stuff Works, there’s no place on the planet that’s completely immune to natural disasters.
So when choosing a place to live, there are plenty of factors to consider aside from whether or not they have severe storms.
But if a city is known for being wiped out by a hurricane or tornado every few years, you might want to find somewhere safer to settle down.

Dad's Coworker's Truck Was Struck By Lightning Last Night
Ok... so cars aren't safe? Anyone else think tyres grounded them and all would be fine?
No, the tyres quite specifically do not ground them, they're an insulating material, not a conductor. What actually happens is that the car body forms a Faraday cage, so the current passes around the occupants, meaning that if you're sitting in it you won't get zapped by the lightning. But it's still passing through the car itself and if there's a loose fuel line or something else highly inflammable then a fire is easily started.
Load More Replies...That's not a lightning strike, the tyres are still intact and they would have burst due to lightning grounding through them.
I'm not going to argue with anyone about Faraday Cages etc but that must've been a direct hit. We once had a severe lightening storm that knocked out our electricity, the TV reception went first, lightening direct struck a few buildings including ours and a few trees as it went overhead. The next day we went out to clear up, get the tree out of the road and there was a huge scorch mark at the end of our road where a direct lightening bolt must've hit. So I can definitely believe that this happened

My Parents' Backyard Right Now, From Less Than 20 Minutes Of Rain. It Was Dry This Morning
Love the yard design, sorry about the storm wrecking it, but has anyone told Joker it's safe to come out of his house now??! Lol 💚💜💚💜 😆
The problem with heavy rain in a short period is that the ground can suck only a little, not quicker enough. The same thing happens in European countries as we see from time to time in the news. There's not enough free ground to absorb the rain because they have covered it with asphalt, and many towns are in mountainous zone.

My Art Tent Got Destroyed By A Flood
Rain came out of nowhere and the sirens were going off and saying seek shelter immediately so I trusted my tent to keep my art safe while I took shelter in my car. Came back once the storm was clear to find my life's work in a heap. They said they found my canvases all the way down by the highway that had been carried away by what they described as a river flowing where there was supposed to be a road. It will cost me thousands to replace all of my prints and my tent. I'll be okay. I know I will bounce back. This is just a big hit and it hurts me so bad emotionally to see my artwork lying in muddy puddles on the road. I am very thankful for the people that stayed and helped me clean up the mess afterwards.
So upsetting, I know. This used to happen to my handmade jewelry stand about twice a year when I sold at farmers markets. So exhausting.
OMG so sorry to hear that. My daughter has a lot of art work and I'd hate her to lose it. I hope some can be rescued.
So sorry you lost your life's work. Hope some will be retrievable. Not something one can get over - ever.
if sirens are blaring to seek shelter, why would anyone expect a pop up tent to keep things dry?
So, after the alarm went off, advising people to get sheltered somewhere safe, you "trusted" your tent? I would have grabbed what I could and ran to safety.
Insurance Lapsed 59 Minutes Earlier
My father-in-law lives in a 5th wheel and during an ice storm, a tree crashed through his roof and completely destroyed it. He has a brain tumor and gets confused, so my husband filed the claim saying it happened at 1 AM. The insurance called the next day and said that my father-in-law didn't renew his insurance plan, and it had lapsed at 12:01, so nothing was covered.
Depends. If it were just one day after the renewal date then yes, I agree. Where I live you would get several reminders including a final demand before coverage was actually, and retrospectively, withdrawn, so if that were the case here then you couldn't really blame them.

Be Careful, It's A Bit Windy Out Today
Vilnius, Lithuania Today. Biggest Storm Since 1993
Happened A Few Weeks Ago But We Had Just Gotten Enough Money Together To Pay Rent With The Late Fees, Then A Tree Went Through Our Roof After A Bad Storm
Got it fixed, then our step broke in half. It's always something.
If you are paying rent then the owners should be paying all damages to the building not you. He owns the building not you. All you should be responsible for is your own possessions.
My mom always says that and, "Everything happens in threes."

The sad and stupid part is that Floridians continue to elect governors, senators and congress people from the Republican party to represent them. Y'know, the party that doesn't believe in climate change and insists it is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese. I farking hate that people can be this willfully stupid.
Florida coasts were supposed to be underwater by now. The North Pole was supposed to be ice-free long ago. "Climate change" is a hoax. Far East countries are the biggest contributers to pollution. Go b***h at them for a while while we Republicans laugh at you. (p.s. Before you even try going there, no, I don't support Trump.) Hey, why do celebrities keep buying oceanfront properties? And why do they fly private? And why do they own huge mansions that require gobs of electricity?

My Wife’s Greenhouse Blew Away And Crumpled Last Night
We’ve had it for about two years and it has withstood some hellish weather. Something about the wind last night caught it just right. The frame was bolted to 4x4s and those were secured to the ground with spikes that went about 8 inches deep.
Might have held if the spikes had been ground anchors.

Flooding In Pittsburgh. The River Level In Downtown Was The Highest It Has Been Since 2005
The river level in Downtown was the highest it has been since since 2005.
My hometown! That section of Ft. Duquesne Blvd. (pronounced "Doo-cane") is nicknamed "the bathtub" because it is so prone to flooding. It is a low road right next to a river.
I don't care what you say. I'm going to pronounce it "duck-wez-knee." 😅
Load More Replies...Off topic: Pittsburgh used to flood a *lot* more, but then we built the Kinzua Dam. One problem: it was to be built on Native land. Like, reservation land. Despite them having a different proposal that was only a bit more expensive, they still decided to flood the land, including graveyards, and move the Seneca to New York. And that's a big reason why Pittsburgh doesn't flood as often as it used to. See https://www.ohiowatershed.org/kinzua-dam-changed-life-for-seneca-people.html.

Texas Has Experienced Some Wild Weather In The Last Week Or Two. This Is The Result Of Hail Damage On A Solar Farm
The damage looks surprisingly light, considering. It could have been much worse.
Go solar, they said. It's cheap, they said. It's better for the environment, they said. Well, the environment just flashed a big, fat middle finger at that idea.
Should be protected by something in the areas they are place. Idk like some sort of screening or something.
That would negatively impact the ability of the panels to generate electricity

A Snowy, Windy Day In New England Blows Over The Toilets On The Job Site
Almost Made It All The Way Home Safely
I get off work at 5 AM and it had been snowing throughout the night, and the plows hadn’t gone through yet. I had just recently gotten new tires but still wanted to take it safe considering it was normally a 20-minute drive in clear conditions. Got within 5 miles of home when I lost control in a roundabout and slammed into the curb. Still haven’t gotten to figure out just how bad the damage is, but I took one look and decided it looked expensive.
And this is why you should use proper winter tyres in the winter. Oh, and drive at a safe speed for the conditions.

The CV didn’t snap, it just pulled apart. The only thing that holds them together is that both end are attached to something. Worst case, it needs new upper and lower control arms, a new half shaft, new steering link, and a new steering knuckle. Wouldn’t be cheap at a shop, but I’ve done it in an afternoon. (Well, half I did it. Had help and air tools)

After The Massive Nor’easter In Maine This Week, A Tree Behind My House Took Out This Power Line And We’ve Been Without Power In Freezing Temps Since Early Morning On April 4th
The power company sent a generic text saying they expect power to be restored by April 9 or April 10, but I took this picture today (April 6) at about 5 PM and they haven’t even started working on it yet. To be fair, about 300k homes have lost power since the storm, and thousands of workers have come up to help get power lines fixed. But it’s very cold and and my animals and I are freezing. I’m poor and can’t afford a generator or gas to power it. My pellet stove requires electricity to operate. So my dog, my roommates' cats, and I are just living in a blanket fort for the time being. Wish us luck!
That's one reason I decided against a pellet stove. Power goes out frequently in these mountains, so I have backups that work without it.
Yeah, thought about it, but need juice to power the pellet auger. Have a 1 block gas space heater so at LEAST the pipes don't split.

Woodstove. There is 1 in my basement that we use when it's really cold to help the furnace not run so much and it definitely helps with the light bill when it's really cold. Either me or my son will start a fire and we take turns feeding the beast as I call it.
That's like the most important job of the power companies! We're getting something like 100k households without power every time a strong storm hits and most of them are back on the grid in 12-24 hours. And we're talking power lines in the woods and countryside houses here
Bought My First House A Few Months Ago, And Woke Up To This
I moved into my first house about 3 months ago. I’m up in the northeast and we’ve had some heavy rains, and I woke up to this today. I know that there are some drainage options I can potentially look into, but does anyone have a suggestion for how to deal with the water that’s already standing?
I'd try doing a ditch to whatever direction the water would flow easiest as a stopgap
A Lift Stand Fell Through My Bathroom Ceiling In A Bathroom That’s Never Been Renovated
There’s been a lot of rain and wind the last few days which has caused the ceiling board to finally crack under the pressure of the lift stand. Confused as to how this was left behind and what the purpose of it was. 70s building, original bathroom. Could it really have been sitting there for decades - it’s quite heavy and these boards don’t seem to be able to withstand much weight.
Storm Surge From Hurricane Idalia In Cedar Key, Florida

My First Time In Florida/ Miami Is The Day Of Massive Flash Floods
I work as a traveling machine repairman and got sent down to Miami (I live in Georgia and was working in Wisconsin earlier this week) to work on a pair of CNC routers. Yesterday I got one close to done, but today I couldn’t continue due to the floods. The gate actually got stuck closed so I was trapped. I feel horrible for the customer, they are very nice and lost a lot of product to the water, and several machines are most likely going to have water intrusion. Thoughts and prayers to everyone here, the floods delay me but they’re absolutely going to really hurt some people. Nature’s cruel.
Nah, Florida's been having typhoons for as long as people can remember. There are even old movies from the 1930s about it.

Wares Creek Area Among Flooded Roads In Bradenton, Florida
Florida doesn't seem to like people living there, by the looks of it.
Even though some of this devastation can be attributed to climate change, I think we should recognize that there have always been extreme weather events. Human shelters have become much lower in construction quality over the last 40 years, so they just don't stand up to certain kinds of stress the way that older structures did.
I think a lot of buildings in the US have always been quite flimsy, not sure they've got any worse in the last few years.
Load More Replies...It’s true that we can blame all of this on climate change and that we’ve always had these types of events. But the reality is that these types of events will become far more common and severe due to global warming. Combine that fact with the hubris that comes with building in areas we ought not build (and bailing out people who do so they don’t get the message and just continue to rebuild in areas prone to extreme conditions) and we are just beginning to see how bad things can get. The price of ignoring global warming is going to be astronomical; it will make all the warnings about how doing something would have been expensive seem so quaint.

One thing car owners can do for hail. Make a raft of pool noodles wide and long enough to cover your car. Strap it on and the hail will not ruin your car.
