That's called a wall cloud. The Midwest gets them all the time. If you see one, get to cover ASAP.

It’s a derecho. If you ever see one, treat it like a tornado. Stay away from windows and take shelter below ground if possible.

Had it last year in my city in July. Four people killed, flooded houses, torn roofs, and countless trees destroyed in less than 15 minutes.

When I first moved to Colorado, I noted some differences. More people had two car garages and a shed. The garages were generally not used for storage. And many cars had this interesting dimpled finish to the hood and roof of the car. A few weeks later, after a up-to-golf-ball sized hailstorm, I understood.

About a week ago I was driving to drop Mt husband off and we got hit hard with hail and rain to the point of everyone pulling over as we couldn't see. Cars under water. When the May 3, 1999 tornado happened I had to have a new roof put on my house, because softball size hail almost punched holes in my roof. When there’s nothing else to talk about, we can always rely on the weather! I mean, it’s literally always there. But have you ever stopped to wonder why that’s the go-to conversation topic? Well, according to Sentient Decision Science, one of the main reasons why is because the weather has such a strong impact on how we feel.

We’re all familiar with the idea of seasonal depression, and it’s likely that you’ve found yourself exceptionally energized on a bright, sunny day. Discussing the topic of weather is an easy way to relate to others, as they probably feel the same way about what’s happening in the sky at the moment. And even if they don’t, you can still discuss what your ideal weather would be and why. This might tell you a lot about a person!

    View more comments

If you live in a place that actually has four seasons and doesn’t have extremely predictable weather, you might need to carry a raincoat, an umbrella, sunglasses and a hat with you every day, just in case Mother Nature decides to be temperamental. But why does it seem like the weather forecast is rarely correct? I’ve been waiting around for a thunderstorm all day that doesn’t seem to be coming!

The National Weather Service explains on their site that the process of creating the forecast is pretty much the same regardless of the weather. Computer programs analyze the current conditions, and forecasters use their magic (okay, models and years of experience) to predict how those conditions will change in the future. But of course, there’s no way to be 100% sure about what the weather’s going to look like tomorrow.

A Tree Limb Penetrated The Neighbor's Roof And Landed Between Their Legs While Sleeping

Tree branch crashes through bedroom ceiling and bed, illustrating nature's unpredictable and wild impact indoors.

My 84-year-old neighbor and his wife were sleeping in bed when this more than 20-foot-long tree limb broke off during a wind storm and crashed into their house. This happened around 1:00 AM. They called me for help, and my neighbor was laughing as he explained that the tree limb landed between his legs while he was sleeping on his back on that side of the bed. He crawled back in bed to show me. The limb was inches from his groin area.

Goodbye My Beautiful Cherry Blossom Tree

Fallen tree in a backyard garden surrounded by green grass and bare trees under a partly cloudy sky.

The tree I used to play in as a child, which held bird feeders and hammocks and many a cat, which would drop so many blossoms in the autumn that me and my dad would make a day of raking them, which gave me shade on a sunny day to read, which stood rain wind and shine for over 30 years.
It was dying for a few years as the roots became infected, but we had some strong wind recently and it was finally felled. Goodbye, old friend.

Oh, no! I wonder if the tree could be uprighted, replanted and carefully staked since some of the roots are still underground? I would surely make the effort! I've seen trees continue live "lying down" on the ground as long as there are roots still attached underground. Definitely pull it upright and give it a try! Plus find out if there is a treatment for "infected roots." Bacteria or toxins, perhaps?

It can be frustrating to not know exactly what the skies will look like in the future, as our plans are often weather-dependent. But as we mentioned previously, the weather can also greatly impact our moods. I love a beautiful, sunny day, but once the weather is hot, I feel lethargic and lazy. I hate getting sweaty just by going outside, and I have much more energy when it’s a bit cooler. I can walk for miles without getting tired as long as it’s not hot!

If you ever wanted to feel what it was like to be sandblasted, stand in one of those! I guarantee any dead skin (and live skin at that) would be blasted off of you in seconds. Want to remove your makeup, just face the wall of sand and no problem, it would be removed along with the top 2 layers of skin. I don't miss those for anything!

It's even more frightening when you're on the ground in front of one! Just such a thing happened here, in Melbourne Australia on 8th February, 1983 https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftse3.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOIP.n5a2cvguQlhdfbyEDUT5YgHaFU%26pid%3DApi&f=1&ipt=5ddb6d4f0c99a0ba7223f20094b803bf40d0f593a268917dc485a9ca880e6d99&ipo=images and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Melbourne_dust_storm My mother thought it was the beginning of another world war - I was standing by my car in the school pick-up area, on top of a fairly tall hill, waiting to pick up my two daughters. You could see right across the city of Melbourne on a clear day - almost to the bay. The look of horror on the faces of the other mothers must have been mirrored on mine. When the bell rang and the children came out, we just grabbed our kids and ran. I can tell you, I have never seen ANYTHING as menacing or as scary as that red cloud swallowing up our city!

I was always taught that a car is one of the safest places to be in a lightning storm because the tyres insulate and the chassis directs the charge

It's not the tyres, it's that the frame of the car creates a Farraday cage.

The weather can also impact your sleep cycle, as your circadian rhythm can be thrown off by a room that’s too hot or too cold. If your building's heating hasn’t come on yet for the winter, you might be shivering until the morning. And if it’s August and your home has no air conditioning, you might sweat through the whole night. To try to minimize the weather’s impact on your sleep schedule, it’s important to try to get as much sun as possible during the short winter days. And during the summer, make sure you have blackout curtains and a way to keep cool in the evenings.

This is why the Dutch have a mostly natural coastline, with undisturbed dunes with plants, keeping the sand in place. On critical points protective structures are built. And for the most part, it is forbidden by law to build buildings on top of the dunes and on the beach. There are a few exceptions, most of them are illegal. But a scenario like this on the background won't happen

I'm from Oklahoma and have been here all of my life, it may sound bad but storms like this is something you get used to dealing with. I had to save money, but after the May 20, 2013 tornado we had to sit on a waiting list for a year in order to have a storm cellar put in. All of our family and neighbors have access to it and you would be surprised at how many people and animals you can feet into a 8x11 cellar. We ALWAYS make it work and have NEVER turned anyone away.

I do not miss those days at all! From the time we moved into our house in 84 to 2014, we had years of shutting all of the bedroom/bathroom doors and laying in our hallway. As soon as the weather got bad Mom would take every pillow and comforter to stash in the hallway for us kids. Once the sirens went off there was 7 of us, all laying down with as much padding over us as Mom could find. By the time it was just me and Mom we would clean out our hall closet every spring, because we would cram both of us in there with pillows and blankets. I can't even tell you the MASSIVE amount of relief we felt when we finally had our cellar built.

The weather can play a huge part in your mental health as well. If you’re prone to developing seasonal depression, or seasonal affective disorder, be sure to take vitamin D supplements and find ways to enjoy the winter. It might not be the most exciting time of the year, depending on where you live, but there’s no reason to suffer all season!

The winter months aren’t the only ones that can take a toll on our mental health, though. While many people love summer, warm weather can actually cause others to become more irritable and aggressive. (Guilty! Growing up in the blazing heat of South Texas made me despise hot weather.) In fact, shootings are more likely to occur on hot days. So make sure you find a way to keep cool during the summer, literally and figuratively!

Not-at-all-a-fun fact: Lismore has been flooded 150 times since 1850. It lies on a large, fertile flood plain below a very complex catchment area. Whether the city floods is determined by the amount of rainfall & where it falls in the catchment area

UK weather! 😄 I took two photos a few years back, one from my bedroom window and one from my living room window, opposite sides of the building, within a minute of each other. One showed that it was hailing like crazy and the other was it was sunny! It was just as a hailstorm was passing over us!

Hope the trampoline is secured. We heard a loud noise outside from back yard during a rather windy day. Look outside and I yelled to my wife "oh damn, the kids trampoline is in the apple tree" and she come running saying "but we sold the trampoline last year, dont you remember?". Turned out it was the next door familys trampoline. It had blown over the hedge, smacked our grill to the ground and was luckely caught by our apple tree - or it would have continued its journy into our living room window.

It probably won't be easy if you’re looking for a way to avoid extreme weather like we’ve seen on this list, according to How Stuff Works, there’s no place on the planet that’s completely immune to natural disasters.

So when choosing a place to live, there are plenty of factors to consider aside from whether or not they have severe storms.

But if a city is known for being wiped out by a hurricane or tornado every few years, you might want to find somewhere safer to settle down.

This is from a storm. There’s a pond out back and that’s the main culprit. On a normal day, you’d think there’s no way it would ever reach the house, no matter how much it rained, but sure enough it did.

Apparently, this small nation between Spain and France is squeezed into an incredibly safe spot. Monaco is another country that very rarely gets hit with severe weather. Ace

No, the tyres quite specifically do not ground them, they're an insulating material, not a conductor. What actually happens is that the car body forms a Faraday cage, so the current passes around the occupants, meaning that if you're sitting in it you won't get zapped by the lightning. But it's still passing through the car itself and if there's a loose fuel line or something else highly inflammable then a fire is easily started.

I'm not going to argue with anyone about Faraday Cages etc but that must've been a direct hit. We once had a severe lightening storm that knocked out our electricity, the TV reception went first, lightening direct struck a few buildings including ours and a few trees as it went overhead. The next day we went out to clear up, get the tree out of the road and there was a huge scorch mark at the end of our road where a direct lightening bolt must've hit. So I can definitely believe that this happened

If the ground was very dry, and it hadn't rained in a while, that would cause flooding. The ground can't absorb the water as fast as it is coming down, and it has nowhere to go. We get that a lot in south Texas

The problem with heavy rain in a short period is that the ground can suck only a little, not quicker enough. The same thing happens in European countries as we see from time to time in the news. There's not enough free ground to absorb the rain because they have covered it with asphalt, and many towns are in mountainous zone.

I have a tree that was hit by lightening - blew bark off and topped the tree. We need to take it down, but can't afford the cost. It looks so sad, a few small branches sprouted on the middle section, but I fear it is doomed.

My Art Tent Got Destroyed By A Flood

Outdoor art booth damaged by wind with fallen canvases and broken tent, showcasing nature's wild impact and disruption.

Rain came out of nowhere and the sirens were going off and saying seek shelter immediately so I trusted my tent to keep my art safe while I took shelter in my car. Came back once the storm was clear to find my life's work in a heap. They said they found my canvases all the way down by the highway that had been carried away by what they described as a river flowing where there was supposed to be a road. It will cost me thousands to replace all of my prints and my tent. I'll be okay. I know I will bounce back. This is just a big hit and it hurts me so bad emotionally to see my artwork lying in muddy puddles on the road. I am very thankful for the people that stayed and helped me clean up the mess afterwards.

    Insurance Lapsed 59 Minutes Earlier

Indoor damage with broken ceiling and fallen tree branches after nature caused destruction on the roof and inside the room.

My father-in-law lives in a 5th wheel and during an ice storm, a tree crashed through his roof and completely destroyed it. He has a brain tumor and gets confused, so my husband filed the claim saying it happened at 1 AM. The insurance called the next day and said that my father-in-law didn't renew his insurance plan, and it had lapsed at 12:01, so nothing was covered.

Depends. If it were just one day after the renewal date then yes, I agree. Where I live you would get several reminders including a final demand before coverage was actually, and retrospectively, withdrawn, so if that were the case here then you couldn't really blame them.

Off topic: Pittsburgh used to flood a *lot* more, but then we built the Kinzua Dam. One problem: it was to be built on Native land. Like, reservation land. Despite them having a different proposal that was only a bit more expensive, they still decided to flood the land, including graveyards, and move the Seneca to New York. And that's a big reason why Pittsburgh doesn't flood as often as it used to. See https://www.ohiowatershed.org/kinzua-dam-changed-life-for-seneca-people.html.

Well besides the wheel completely falling off, the CV axel snapped in half. I am guessing the cost to be around $2k-$4k. I hope your insurance covers it.

The CV didn’t snap, it just pulled apart. The only thing that holds them together is that both end are attached to something. Worst case, it needs new upper and lower control arms, a new half shaft, new steering link, and a new steering knuckle. Wouldn’t be cheap at a shop, but I’ve done it in an afternoon. (Well, half I did it. Had help and air tools)

After The Massive Nor’easter In Maine This Week, A Tree Behind My House Took Out This Power Line And We’ve Been Without Power In Freezing Temps Since Early Morning On April 4th

The power company sent a generic text saying they expect power to be restored by April 9 or April 10, but I took this picture today (April 6) at about 5 PM and they haven’t even started working on it yet. To be fair, about 300k homes have lost power since the storm, and thousands of workers have come up to help get power lines fixed. But it’s very cold and and my animals and I are freezing. I’m poor and can’t afford a generator or gas to power it. My pellet stove requires electricity to operate. So my dog, my roommates' cats, and I are just living in a blanket fort for the time being. Wish us luck!

That's one reason I decided against a pellet stove. Power goes out frequently in these mountains, so I have backups that work without it.

Yeah, thought about it, but need juice to power the pellet auger. Have a 1 block gas space heater so at LEAST the pipes don't split.

My heating broke last winter, my cats and I were snuggled together with as many blankets and duvets as I could find. I created a tent over my bed and we were lovely and warm - until I had to move to go to the bathroom or get food.

Woodstove. There is 1 in my basement that we use when it's really cold to help the furnace not run so much and it definitely helps with the light bill when it's really cold. Either me or my son will start a fire and we take turns feeding the beast as I call it.

That's like the most important job of the power companies! We're getting something like 100k households without power every time a strong storm hits and most of them are back on the grid in 12-24 hours. And we're talking power lines in the woods and countryside houses here

Bought My First House A Few Months Ago, And Woke Up To This

I moved into my first house about 3 months ago. I’m up in the northeast and we’ve had some heavy rains, and I woke up to this today. I know that there are some drainage options I can potentially look into, but does anyone have a suggestion for how to deal with the water that’s already standing?

A Lift Stand Fell Through My Bathroom Ceiling In A Bathroom That’s Never Been Renovated

A Lift Stand Fell Through My Bathroom Ceiling In A Bathroom That’s Never Been Renovated

There’s been a lot of rain and wind the last few days which has caused the ceiling board to finally crack under the pressure of the lift stand. Confused as to how this was left behind and what the purpose of it was. 70s building, original bathroom. Could it really have been sitting there for decades - it’s quite heavy and these boards don’t seem to be able to withstand much weight.

Oh, wow! We have a very old pub in Shropshire (England, UK), called The Boat Inn. It sits beside the Severn River and has tidemark lines showing how often it floods, with and different levels visible. But it remains, and is a 'famous' (re: constant flooding) and popular venue. Thought peeps might be interested hearing about it. The-Boat-I...f4c715.jpg The-Boat-Inn-66c9a81f4c715.jpg

My First Time In Florida/ Miami Is The Day Of Massive Flash Floods

My First Time In Florida/ Miami Is The Day Of Massive Flash Floods

I work as a traveling machine repairman and got sent down to Miami (I live in Georgia and was working in Wisconsin earlier this week) to work on a pair of CNC routers. Yesterday I got one close to done, but today I couldn’t continue due to the floods. The gate actually got stuck closed so I was trapped. I feel horrible for the customer, they are very nice and lost a lot of product to the water, and several machines are most likely going to have water intrusion. Thoughts and prayers to everyone here, the floods delay me but they’re absolutely going to really hurt some people. Nature’s cruel.

I actually have two of these matching planters, but only one of them cracked. I’m assuming due to how saturated it was and the massive temperature drop. It’s survived other ice storms before and was a hard lesson to learn.

You must be in a flooding area, which you can find on maps - a good idea when buying a property (in the UK, but not sure about anywhere else?), and more peeps should be made aware to peeps who don't realise, by Estate Agents.
