You might be beset by dozens of problems in your daily life. But the moment there’s a threat to your safety or that of your loved ones, all of that goes out the window. Then, there’s only one focus: survival, at any cost.

However, in life-or-death situations, you can panic and freeze up. It takes quick wits and agility to get out of danger in one piece, whether you suddenly smell gas, get stuck in freezing weather, get lost in a big crowd, or feel like someone is following you. Though there’s no substitute for training, a decent starting point is knowing what to do in critical situations. At least, in theory.

Today, we’re featuring various redditors’ survival tips and tricks, as they shared lesser-known facts about staying safe, in an informative thread on r/AskReddit. Have you ever found yourself in any perilous situations like the ones described here, dear Pandas? What advice would you add? Share your wisdom and experience in the comments.

Bored Panda got in touch with the Australian Firefighters Calendar team to learn more about fire safety. Firefighter Ben Church was kind enough to answer our questions. Established in 1993, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has raised over $3.4 million for various charities. You'll find our interview below.

Internet Users Are Sharing 'Unknown' Facts That Could Save Your Life, And Here Are 40 Of The Most Useful Ones I have 8 siblings; one is a firefighter/paramedic, other is a 911 dispatcher, other is a soldier, other is a cop and my sis is a lifeguard. They all contributed to this. None do Reddit so they wanted this. A lot of this is frequently asked questions. Sorry, this is long, we have a lot to share. Fish smell but no fish? GET OUT, ELECTRICAL FIRE, CALL 911. Drunk but no alcohol? Tell the person to smile, if it's drooping, it's a stroke. Stabbed? Don't move it. Go to the ER because it's the only thing preventing you from bleeding to death. Cinnamon smell in your drink? Don't drink it, it's a cover up for poison. No service and need help? You're still able to call 911. Ocean retreating? Get to high ground, there's a tsunami. Need heat/light? Burn a crayon, it will last up to 14 minutes. Don't know how to talk to 911? Say where you are first, what happened, your info, the victim's info, stay calm and answer questions best you can. The more info, the better. Square waves? Avoid the water, you'll drown. Think you're being followed? Make 4 right turns. Still behind you? Following you, DON'T GO HOME, GO TO THE POLICE STATION. Held at gunpoint/knifepoint and told to go somewhere? DON'T GO. You're more likely to be found where you are than to the location you're being taken and make a scene too. White fuzzy spot on your banana? Don't eat it, spider infestation. In the woods and nothing to eat? Dandalions (the yellow ones) are fully edible. Carjacker? Crash the car, then you're useless. Under rubble? Grab an object and tap in intervals of 3, wait 10 seconds, tap 3 times again and so on. Unmoving tornado? It's coming towards you. Fall on tracks at a subway? There's a crawl space under the platform, go there until you get help. Don't know the emergency number? Call 112, it's a worldwide emergency number. Disturb a bee/wasp nest? They're not stupid, don't go in water, they'll keep stinging you when you go for air. Purple flag on the beach? Don't swim, there are dangerous sea creatures in that area. Bleeding? Elevate it above the heart. Gas smell? DON'T USE THE ELECTRIC, YOUR HOUSE WILL EXPLODE. Bitten and poisoned? DON'T SUCK IT. YOU'LL ONLY MAKE IT WORSE. Someone overdosing? DON'T BE AFRAID TO CALL 911, NOR YOU OR THE PERSON WILL GET IN ANY LEGAL TROUBLE. Elevator falling? Lay flat on your back and cover your face. When does drunk driving occur? Late hours of the night (Midnight-4:00 in the morning) Friday-Sunday. Hair randomly stands up while outside? DUCK AND COVER, YOURE GETTING STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. What info should I carry? List of medicines you take, allergies, name, age, address, phone number, where you live, what language you speak, blood type, any useful information for emergency services. Fire? Before you leave the room, touch the door with the back of your hand. Cold? Peek out. Hot? Use the window if possible. What's the 3-minute rule? You only have 3 minutes to escape a house fire. 3 weeks without food is survivable. 3 days without water. 3 hours without shelter. 3 minutes oxygen deprived How should I leave a fire? Don't use the lobby or where you came from, when you walk into a building, there are exit signs, use those instead. What's dry drowning? When you're drowning to the point you feel like you need to throw up water, even though you make it out, go to the ER because your lungs will fill with fluid over time then you drown from the fluid. What if an animal is vividly colored? It means they're more likely to be poison. Money falling from buildings? Don't pick it up, get the hell out of there, it's a way terrorists kill more people, is by having them all in one place. What happens if a service animal is not with its owner? Go with it, it's getting help.

I would like to remind that "turn right 4 times if you feel followed" works only, and only in places that are planed as "squares". I'm from Europe. And in my country, many times if you make same turn 4 times to the same side, you literally most likely going to end up in dead end - a perfect place for your attacker. Instead, call emergency number and ask for instructions what to do.

OK this "emergency calls when there is no coverage" only works if there is any coverage at all. Your phone can then use that of another service provider for the emergency call. If there is no coverage at all, then you can't make a call.

See this is the perfect alternative to having to carry this information on you at all times. Get yourself a Lassie-like service dog to communicate all of it for you so that when someone sees your animal without you, they'll know what to say when they call 911 or 112 if abroad.

OK, 1. you peel bananas and I've never seen spiders *inside the peel*, so wtf, just toss the peel in the trash and if you must, throw insecticide on it. 2. When has anyone ever thrown money around to attract victims? 3. Wow, as an MD I'd like to contest the definition of "Dry drowning" and I'd keep going but geez.

Maybe no spiders, but there might be eggs in the flesh of the banana underneath the peel.

I think it refers to extreme weather conditions if you're unprepared. Three hours outside in sub-freezing temperatures with no shelter and less than adequate clothing is probably enough to cause death from exposure. Also, that one was titled "the 3 minute rule" when they should have called it "the rule of 3" since it includes multiple measurements of time.

Drunk Driving occurs 24/7. I got an OUI at 9pm once. Just last week I read about a woman getting one at 10am. People drink at all times of the day for whatever reason. Best time to drive drunk? Never. I blew the bottom of the limit and even the cops were surprised because they didn't think I was intoxicated. I admitted to having a few beers, which was my mistake. Anyway, that was 12 years ago and I won't drive even after one beer and I won't ride in a car with someone else who has been drinking.

Yes. But it is more prevalent at certain times, like when people are going home from the bars. Also, holidays where people tend to drink a lot. Here in the US, people drink during the day as well as evenings quite a bit on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo. New Year's Eve, Thanksgiving and Christmas, people will drink more in the evening, but still a lot of drunk folks, especially NYE. I am not driving drunk, but I'm reticent to drive on those days if I can help it because a lot of the other drivers have been drinking. It's a time for extra caution.

Firefighter Ben, from the Australian Firefighters Calendar team, confirmed that fire does indeed spread rapidly. "In as little as 3-5 minutes, a small fire can quickly spread causing a house to be fully involved. This is due to many factors but primarily due to the construction of homes nowadays and the materials used," he explained to Bored Panda.

"Even the furniture that is in homes nowadays is different to what it used to be, which accelerates the rate of spread fire as compared to 20 years ago. Previously, furniture was made of hardwood material (which was slower burning) and now we have a lot of flat pack furniture made of chipboard (which burns much quicker than hardwood)." This may come as a shock to many of you readers. One would assume that there would be progress regarding fire safety as time moves forward, not the other way around.

Firefighter Ben said that you should evacuate your home if "initial/first strike firefighting actions such as using an extinguisher or fire blanket are ineffective or unsuccessful." The best firefighting method, instead, is prevention.

"It would be wise to make a fire proof plan for your household. Have a fire blanket in the kitchen and an extinguisher nearby but not too close to flammables such as paints, solvents, petroleum, etc. Make sure you don't leave power tools or batteries on charge for extended periods."

Losing too much weight too fast will damage your kidneys. Happened to my father who was trying to go into retirement in better shape. Lost 60 pounds in 2 months eating ONLY salads and drinking water. No carbs or fat. All cardio no weight training. Somehow destroyed one kidney and impaired the other one, he is on daily dialysis now. After it happened I did some research and it seems that your body gets used to the fat in your system which helps curb the toxin filtration. Losing too much too fast is like throwing extra dirt into a filter all at once instead of little at a time. The right way to do it is a few pounds a week with both weight lifting and cardio, also still include some carbs and fat in your diet even if it takes a longer to shed off the pounds. Maybe this is common knowledge because I had somewhat heard this before but I had never seen how it shreds through kidneys so quickly before.

This. Finally. You have no idea what a crash diet or a hard core keto/paleo/atkins/etc. diet can do. Some people will be fine ----- genetic variation ----- but some will end up with CKD (chronic kidney disease) and if you don't end up on dialysis, you end up with neuropathy so bad you wish you'd die, per patients of CKD due to kidney damage. Rabbit starvation is a nickname for this.

I have a friend who died from CKD due to many years of anorexia nervosa. Dialysis, donor kidney, multiple hospitalizations. She didn't outlive her donor kidney (was headed for a new one) and passed away in 2018. She was 36.

This can be a problem with your pets too BTW. I had an obese cat that I had put on a diet to lose some weight (bought him a special food from the vet to help him lose weight slowly). But then he got a tooth infection and refused to eat at all. I had to give him a medicine to increase his appetite. I found the whole thing ironic. I was giving my overweight cat an appetite inducer to make sure he kept eating so that he didn't lose weight too quickly. He is fine BTW, he's just no longer an obese cat. He is a very healthy, but grumpy, 16 year old cat, with one missing tooth (it had to be pulled out, I skipped that part of the story).

Hope your cat is healthy and happy. It can be scary when a pet straight up refuses to eat. My cat had to have half her teeth pulled at only one year of age. My other cat just stopped eating and drinking because of an illness, only got worse.(First cat is alive and Healthy)

... and also make sure that get all the nutrients your body need to rebuild itself, as it is constantly making repears in the eternal fight of natural decay. The body normally does this pretty well when you eat a varied diet, but if you start to eat the same stuff day ind and day out, you run the risk of deficiency diseases (scurvy is an example) if you are not carefull. You body actually need some fat, as that is what cell membranes are build out of, and it is also fat that insulates the electric signals running in your nerves. So while reducing the amount of fat that you ingest is good in many cases, cutting it all togheter is normally a bad idea.

I had a friend who died after an almost decade long battle with chronic kidney disease due to anorexia nervosa. She passed out at home one day and woke up in the hospital with ZERO renal output. She went on dialysis while waiting for a donor kidney, which she eventually received. But donor kidneys have an approximate lifespan of 10 years and then need to be replaced. She didn't live long enough to get a new kidney and passed away in 2018 at the age of 36. Rest sweetly, Jenni ❤

Never, ever, ever give away animals for free to strangers. Creating a financial disincentive to adopt weeds out people who cannot afford to care for a pet, people who will neglect that pet, and most importantly people who intend to abuse that pet. Serial animal abusers search for free animals on social media explicitly for this purpose. Always charge money. It’s not so you can make profit. It’s to increase the chances that animal will be okay.

I had a 110 lbs German Shepherd. I had to move to small apartment, and he was not happy there. I ended up giving him to a farmer who wanted to train him to watch his sheep. The farmer was a Pennsylvania Dutch Mennonite (no electricity, no cars, etc), so I didn't get any photos afterwords, but I did get to visit him a few weeks later. I had never seen Loki so happy. He had a big field, animals to play with, and a load of kids to run around with. He was like a puppy again, it was so cute.

I had to rehome my two cats for 2 reasons even though I wish I could keep them. 1 I was struggling to pay a huge vet bill for my elderly cat who had cancer and I spent a lot of money I didn't have from my tiny disability pension and 2, I moved to a busy town with main roads crisscrossing my road with many heavy trucks going past 24/7 which meant they wouldn't be able to go out during spring and summer and they loved being out. I took contact with the local pet charity and they found a great home in the country where they were free to go in and out as they pleased. I've been in contact with their new owner who has sent me pictures of them and both are very happy. I'm sad for me but happy for them

I got two kittens during the pandemic when prices were sky high (after losing a much loved elderly kitty). I refused to entertain paying for an animal as I believe this encourages unscrupulous breeders. I was happy to pay for vaccinations and/or a donation to charity. I was given my kittens by a stranger who had lots of interest in her kittens. She visited my home before saying I could have them.

People with money don't abuse their animals...? Think again. I've never paid anything for my cats and always took very good care of them. The one that is with me now since almost 10 years was a homeless cat that just jumped on my lap while I was sitting in my garden a day or so after my previous cat died of age related illness. I had decided not to take on another animal because one always feels heartbroken after a pet dies. But she decided otherwise...

I understand the reasoning/thinking behind charging adoption fees. HOWEVER, I also believe that if you're committed to rehoming an animal to a safe & loving home without charging any $, you can & WILL make sure that any potential new owners are thoroughly vetted and have proven themselves capable of raising an animal long-term. I have rehomed many, MANY 🐓, 🐀, & 🐈‍⬛️ over the years without ever charging fees and because I so thoroughly assess potential owners, I can contact the folks who did wind up with the animals, anytime, & get pics/updates about the pets if I ever need to do so. Just because someone can fork over a one-time $25, $40, $50 or whatever rehoming fee doesn't make them trustworthy, capable, or a good fit for the animal they're trying to get...nor does a fee replace the need/responsibility to research, weed out, & communicate with potential new owners. Ultimately, what is protecting the animals is the judgment call(s) of the original owner(s), fee or no.

Straight up bullsh*t!!! Most people can't afford to adopt pets because of how much extra the shelters charge... the same exact reason why most people can't afford to adopt children. Most people who have pets got them for free from strangers, from ads in the paper/online, from a neighbor/friend, or simply found a stray on the street & took it in as their own. And the majority of people who have done that take excellent care of & love those pets as if they were human children, even if they aren't rich b*tches & don't have a sh*tload of money they make sure their pets are taken care of & spoil them. I myself have a dog that I rescued from my neighbor who was neglecting/abusing him & who's brother in law used as a bait dog...I didn't pay for him, and he's taken care of better than ever, completely spoiled even tho all I get is $784 on SSI.

There may come a moment in our lives when we have the opportunity to save someone in danger and be an everyday hero. For instance, you may see a fire in your local area. Once you call the emergency services, what do you do next? Do you wait for the authorities to arrive and support them then or do you attempt to save anyone who's inside by yourself? A lot depends on each individual situation. Bored Panda wanted to get the Australian Firefighters Calendar team's opinion on the right approach.

"It's a tough call and the general answer is to just wait outside and stay away from danger. I would encourage people to use common sense in these situations. Try and alert people that are inside by means of not endangering yourself," firefighter Ben said.

"Can you set off your car horn or alarm? Can you knock on the door or window out of the smoke? I would encourage passersby to gather as much information as possible (contact the neighbors to inform them of fire) so that they can inform the professionals that are arriving but also give them space to do their work," he told Bored Panda.

"There are a lot of hazards involved in structure fires that we as firefighters are trained to look out for and 2 casualties caused by a fire is much worse than 1 casualty.".

Allowed to leave and able to leave are two different ideas however. Abusers are keenly aware of this and will always use it as a further means to control their victims, either by weaponizing an already existing imbalance or creating one themselves. Social and familial isolation, financial control, constant surveillance, etc.

Internet Users Are Sharing 'Unknown' Facts That Could Save Your Life, And Here Are 40 Of The Most Useful Ones From a person who lives in the arctic: If you are outside in cold weather and you are freezing, but all of a sudden feel really warm with no explanation as to why DO NOT REMOVE ANY CLOTHES. You are about to die and your body is spending it’s very last energy on heating you up. Seek shelter and warmth immediately even if it feels like you are boiling hot. People have been found freezing to death in their underwear not far from civilization because they believed they were warm

Medically speaking, by that point, you're usually not thinking clearly enough to say, "Oh, wow, hypothermia!" Speaking as an MD, hypothermia survivor (mild twice) and treater of hypothermia. If you feel freezing? *THAT* is when you seek immediate shelter. Wanna see what happens if someone decides to wait till they feel hot in a blizzard? No, you reallllly don't.

Yup! Can confirm. Been there, done that. Obertauern one a snowstorm, just walked a few meters out of the kitchen I was working in, just a few meters and got lost. I wandered about half an hour and started to feel very hot and just wanted to strip off and curl up in a nice warm snowdrift with my brain screaming that I was about to die. Spoiler, I didn‘t but thawing out again wasn’t pleasant.

Our lower deck was flooded and was almost high enough to get in the house. I was in knee deep water and at the time was taking bucket after bucket of water to dump. I felt really nice and the water felt warm. Went in and couldn't feel anything. I couldn't get warm. I have since cut a few of the boards out. I put holes in a 5 gallon bucket and put in a automatic pump. So now no water comes up over the boards. We used to joke about it until it got into the house. I was the only one able to stay up all night and go plug in the pump. This was before I cut the boards. Lesson learned. I get nervous still around Oct. til Feb. I still panic!!

My sister actually did lose a shoe at a concert back when they had General Admission. She had to be pulled out because of the immense pressure of people pushing towards the stage. She found it after the concert was over. I'm glad that many places have banned General Admission. Disappointed though that ticket prices are so expensive. F*** you Ticketmaster!

At a lot of concerts now, they have security guys between the crowd and the audience. If you are getting crushed against the fencing, you can waive to them and they will help pull you out, and get you back to the rear of the crowd.

I remember leaving the island we all had to take shuttle busses back off the island, so there was a massive crowd waiting to get on the bus, and it was packed SO tight. So tight that when I walked toward the bus and stepped off a curb onto the road I didn't immediately sink to the ground, my 185 pound body just sorta suspended between everyone. You can never truly be 100% prepared for anything in advance because situations can and do change in unexpected ways. There's always room for error. There's always room for the unexpected. However, training and preparation are still essential. Don't sleep on learning survival skills or coming up with a plan of action in case of an emergency.

That’s one of the reasons why you periodically have fire drills at school and work: you need to put your theoretical knowledge to the test. You need your body to know what to do. Of course, things will probably never play out like you imagine them to when there’s a real emergency, but it’s good to build up some muscle memory

One half of someone’s survival habits is having a sharp mind and knowing exactly what to do and how you can tell if you’re in real danger. For example, knowing not to turn on the lights if you smell gas. Or knowing not to take off your clothes if you’re feeling hot when you’re someplace very cold.

The other half of this is physical fitness. If you’re healthy, athletic, and have good endurance, your chances of survival are far better than that of someone who spends all of their time on the couch, glued to their phone or laptop, constantly eating junk food. That’s aside from all of the daily quality of life benefits that come from regular exercise and eating a good diet, of course.

If you meet a confused, psychotic or drugged person, there are important things to be aware of. Confusion is a more common word for "brain failure". The brain is no longer able to do its primary job: Filter what is important for you. You may have heard that our consciousness have very little bandwidth. If the brain can't sort things, sensory input becomes a fire hose, and you can't understand what's ever relevant to you to start dealing with. The frontal lobes shut down, and you start acting and reacting in some very primal ways. In many ways, you function mentally like a frightened animal. You will perceive things differently. A smile is bared teeth and a warning. Eye contact beyond very short moments is a challenge. And so on. So, you're somewhere where you happen to be alone with someone confused. Rule 1: Keep your distance. The personal sphere grows. Rule 2: Keep your face neutral, maybe a bit worried. Rule 3: No sudden movements. Rule 4: Hands where they can see them. Rule 5: Use simple words and short sentences. Rule 6: If you can get them to sit down, the risk of violence decreases. Rule 7: If you can give them a situation they recognize, like eating a sandwich and drinking some coffee, it's even better. Remember, it's not an evil person. It's someone who is in very bad shape. When it goes south, it does so because you cornered them.

"Confusion" is not defined that way. Confusion can be caused by: stroke, tumor, blow to head, dementia, drug use/abuse, dehydration, hypothermia, hyperthermia (heat stroke), hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia (think diabetes), and I can go on. In any case: Call them an EMT and let the medicals decide what it is. Please. Someone doing this is why my mom's still here. (Tumor.)

Yes but just because your normal interactions with people works this may not work for someone who is irrational, the best advice is for you to observe and report if you can get out otherwise rational thinking should be ignored and just try to make yourself not a threat. Maybe even agreeing with them till you have your escape. Try to bring other people into the conversation. They will be more likely to recognize the danger that you also recognize if not try to slip someone some kind of note. Most people are willing to help

I learned this from Mythbusters, in the episode about crashes (cars/helicopters) if you find yourself disoriented underwater: Calm people live, panicked people die. I was in a boat crash a number of years ago, and I believe this saved my life. No flotation device, stupid, I know. I dont remember the impact, I was suddenly several feel underwater and didn't know which way was up. I freaked for a split second, then that advice popped into my head. I stayed still, and let bouyancy do it's thing, saw some bubbles and followed them as they rose.

The pressure gradient in water is much bigger than in air, and hence if you sink quicky, you risk your eardrums flooding. When that happens, you inner ear will be filled with water, and as our balancing organs is located in them, you can loose your sense of what "up" is. It happens to divers sometimes, and as they are balaced to be neutrally boyant, they will not naturally float to the surface. Therefore it is important to not panic, but remember that up is the direction that the exhaused air floats.

I panicked, tried to stand up, but hit my head in the ground (water was like 1,30 m) So I -totally on instinct - opened my eyes, let out a bit if air and followed the bubbles. Stood up no problem. But damn, those were scary moments. You can get disoriented in chest-deep water as well!!!

What. The. Actual.... You still get shocked. Touch it with a wooden (nonconducting!) spoon, if you must. A dry wooden spoon. Because where you get shocked doesn't necessarily determine clinical outcome. It depends on the amps... And you can die at 1 amp. At 5, yep. A 10-amp? ...and put the other hand hand in your pocket! An electric current is most likely to kill you if it runs through your haert on its way to the ground, e.i. thorugh your chest entering at one arm and exiting at the other, as you are holding/grapping something conduction, like a water pipe with the other hand. But the best advice is not to touch it in case of doubt, and use a "voltage tester" before you touch any wire. You can get screwdrivers with a small build in lamp that will flash when touching a live wire.

Too much bad advice in the comments. Don't touch a wire. For any reason unless you are a professional. Electricity can burn you internally as well as electrocute you. Voltage and amperage are not mutually exclusive. Watts are the big problem as is the frequency of the voltage/current. A high voltage low current source can not hurt you until it's too late and you now have internal burns. As low as 6ma can stop your heart. Do not play with electricity. Ever. Professionals treat it with respect. So should you.

Assume it's live. Even back of the hand will kill you if it's high enough voltage.

Though changes in technology and medicine have improved our chances of survival, it’s still vital to have a good level of fitness. It’s as important now, as it was hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Especially in cases when you’re isolated or don’t have access to that technology.

In short, being fit and having a vast knowledge base will help you survive. Especially if you’ve physically practiced what to do.

But there is a limit to how much you can prepare: it’s not like you can ready yourself for a thousand different catastrophes. That would mean that it’s all you live for. It’s impractical, not to mention exhausting, having to live with the stress that something bad will happen.

True! Unbeknownst to me at the time, I have a genetic clotting disorder. What I thought was 'walking pneumonia' and shortness of breath was actually a huge pulmonary embolism forming. On a Sunday evening after not being able to walk from one end of my home to the other due to lack of breath, I had that 'impending sense of doom'. Told my spouse and we headed to the ER. Fortunately they knew what tests to run and figured out the PE, put me in ICU, and administered a clot-busting drug. I'm hear to tell the story, but if I hadn't paid attention to the impending sense of doom, I might not be.

I learned this in nursing school. If a patient tells you, "I just don't feel right, something is wrong", treat it as an emergency. Responding to their feeling of doom has saved many lives!

Having to wait a certain amount of time to report someone is missing is 100 percent a lie made up for TV and movies. Finding a missing person is actually a race against the clock and the first 24 hours are the most important. If someone is missing missing, call the cops NOW.

In germany you can't report an adult person missing within the first 24 hours. I mean you can but they won't do anything expect they have reasonto to. If the person just "left" or just doesn't come home they wont do anything because as a grown up you can decide where you want to be at any time so they always first think the person just decided to leave. If there's a video tape of the person being abducted or the car is empty on the road or they left all personal belongings (phone, money, ID, cards) somewhere - than they'll do something. They'll react instantly if a child is missing tho.

In UK you can report an adult missing as soon as they've been gone long enough to worry you, and they will ask the questions to determine how unusual this behaviour is. It's a case by case decision

Until fairly recently, there were in fact many polic departments in the US at least which required a waiting period for teens and adults who had gone missing. So it's not totally made up, it's outdated.

One time we couldn’t find one of my mom’s friends and she wasn’t picking up her phone. Her parents called the police after she had Ben gone about 5 hours (she was running to the store) and they said that it hadn’t been long enough. Luckily she was fine, but I still don’t think highly of the police department

My dad lives alone and quite far away from all his children. One of us usually speaks to him everyday. I remember a funny time the eldest sister messaged to ask if anyone had spoken/text with him the last couple of days as she hadn't been able to get through to him. None of us had and we all went into a mad panic calling and texting him. Couple of hours goes by no response and she was just about to call the police when he sent us all a message and said what the hell is going on? I just went out line dancing :))))))

10/10 agree. Called my husband in missing a few years ago after he didn't come home on time and I couldn't reach him, he didn't say he was going anywhere else either. The cops found him crashed off a ditch near my house (I live less than 20 mintues from the mountains, it's really hilly here) and he had an concussion. So yeah. Call if they are missing. It's okay.

Odds are that, yes, at some point in your life, you’ll probably have to deal with danger. However, you can’t sacrifice your peace of mind just for this possibility. You have to be aware of the dangers and prepare for the most common ones, without giving in to constant fear and paranoia.

When dealing with unpredictability, many people can react with frustration and disappointment. Most of us yearn for a sense of routine and certainty. And when that’s taken away from us, it can be traumatic.

The answer to this is to accept that there will be moments and entire stretches of time when we might not have control over what happens to us. Not everything will go according to plan. Sometimes, bad things will happen to us. But we can change our expectations and how we react to these new circumstances. It’s all about embracing what we can and cannot control.

ER nurse here, I have a few that may or may not have been covered: Don’t mix alcohol with opiates. They both depress the respiratory center of the brain and combined, can kill you. If you are a recovering addict and you relapse, don’t take the same amount of the drug as you did the last time you got high. You had a tolerance then, you don’t now. Many overdoses happen this way. If someone arrests or dies in front of you, start chest compressions right away and don’t stop. Good quality chest compressions that are continuous and delivered at a rate of about 100/min can and do save lives (sing ‘Stayin Alive’ during compressions if necessary). If you’re pregnant and having bad headaches that won’t go away, get to the ER; they’re a sign of preeclampsia. If you’re worried about a heart attack and need to get to an ER, take an aspirin right away, it thins the blood. If someone is passed out and vomiting, turn them on their side, don’t leave them lying on their back, they can aspirate on their own vomit. Lastly, in an emergency, if an ambulance is on the way, don’t try to drive to the hospital instead. They have lifesaving equipment in their vehicles and you don’t. Wait for them and stay on the line with the 911 dispatcher. Stay safe out there kids.

Important: if you take an aspirin for a heart attack, CHEW IT, don’t just swallow it normally. It gets into the bloodstream much quicker, which is critical when every minute counts. It should also be at least 325mg and not any kind of “extended release” or “12 hour relief” aspirin. https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/aspirin-for-heart-attack-chew-or-swallow

also, women present heart attacks differently than men. it's not the left arm hurting like it is depicted in movies. it can be a pain in the shoulders, along the jaw. the main thing is if you don't feel right go to the ER. after having a traumatic event happen it was a day or so that i didn't feel right and finally went to the ER. it turned out to be anxiety and i was apologizing for taking up their time as the ER had been crowded and they took me in asap when i mentioned heart attack. they responded that it was not a problem and to never hesitate to come in if you feel something isn't right or have that 'impending doom' feeling.

💯 to the one about using the same about of drugs you did before a period of sobriety. I worked in substance misuse for several years and people are at their highest risk of overdose when they've just come out of prison. No drugs for weeks, months, or even years and then they come out and want to party and think they can use the same amount they did before. Same with alcohol. People that don't usually drink that much are often the most at risk of alcohol poisoning.

Avoid wearing headphones, earphones, or air pods if you're walking alone on a street especially when it's dark. This attracts kidnappers since they think you are off-guard and would not hear them approaching. Avoid being on your phone too cause it makes you appear distracted. Just walk and be alert. If you feel like somebody is coming or following you, try to fake a phone call as if someone is waiting for you not too far from your current location. Say things like "I'm almost there guys" or "I'm already here at (current location)." This stuff came from a caught kidnapper. He describes what type of people they go for in the street. They also avoid approaching people with both hands stuck in their pockets since they are unsure if they're holding a knife or other self-defense weapon. Hope this helps.

Not a kidnapping but I think self confidence helped me dodge a mugging years ago. 2 AM, downtown Seattle at an intersection. Nobody around (except these folks). Five guys walk up to me and one says, "YOU GOT ANY MONEY?" I looked him in the eye and calmly said, "None that you can have" and turned my back on him and walked across the street. I'm pretty sure they thought I had a weapon or I wouldn't be so ballsy. I walked away all casual but man I was ready to bust out my fastest run any second if they started coming after me.

I know you probably meant your post as a joke, but for anybody who is in this situation (living alone, but being prone to suicidal thoughts): please try to make your home environment safe. I keep several hotline numbers in my phone and posted on my fridge. I don't keep a gun or large quantities of sleeping pills in my house. Most importantly, I monitor my symptoms and reach out for help when I'm feeling even a slight increase in depression or anxiety. It's important to find resources and put a plan in place when you're not feeling too bad; then you can rely on it if things get bad and you're no longer thinking straight.

Sometimes people with severe depression may seem to suddenly 'get better' and be very happy, almost manic. This is often when it is most dangerous for them, as sometimes they will be happy because they have finally found a way out. Do not leave them alone for a minute at this point. You should always check up on your friends if you think they might be depressed or suicidal, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. There are plenty of anonymous helplines and groups available if you don't feel comfortable talking to people you know. And if there is a serious situation where you or someone else is thinking about committing suicide, call for help. In Australia, the phone number for Lifeline is 13 11 14 (a non-profit organisation that provides free, 24-hour telephone crisis support service specialising in suicide and mental health) and in an emergency, always call emergency services. 000 in Australia, 911 in USA, 999 in the UK, etc. and 112 for the international standard emergency number. Take it from someone who has experienced very bad depression in the past, this information might save someone's life.

I'll be really vulnerable and give you a personal account if this. There was a point where I was severely depressed, friends and family knew and I had been in therapy. They were thrilled when I cleaned up my apartment and donated unneeded stuff, I amped up going out and talking to friends and family. What I was doing was trying to make my exit easier by cleaning up my place so it would be easier to pack up and spending time with close friends and family so they'd have good memories of me when I was gone. Be aware of this because sometimes when it seems like your depressed loved one suddenly gets cheery it's because they've made up their mind, they've made a plan to end the suffering and they're getting their affairs in order.

Eventually it can't be helped. We all have to make the decision to live. Make plans with them, give them reason to look forward to the future. Most importantly they need some reason to think things can change for them, treatment, counselling, debt advice. Most people who are saved in a suicide attempt never try again because something has then changed, they get help or understanding or compassion. A sense of change is the key

When a suicidal person suddenly acts as if they totally snapped out of it; they’re happy, calm, and so damn normal, do NOT leave them. In fact, call their therapist or get them to a hospital ASAP. Suicidal people who suddenly seem “cured” have finally decided today is the day they’re going to kill themselves, which has the odd effect of calming them down. In these cases, though, that’s definitely NOT a good thing.

also, don't hesitate to take action if you think their attempt could be imminent. my son lost his wife and was very despondent and mentioned not having the will to live for a few days. i ended up having him committed for 72 hours. he was pissed at me but after he was released he told me he understood. was still upset at me but we got over it. better to have a pissed off person than to attend a funeral.

Windex has ammonia. Many bathroom cleaners have bleach. The combination of ammonia and bleach's main ingredient, sodium hypochlorite, produces chloramine vapor. VERY toxic.

I did this when I was about 18. Cleaning a bathtub with Ajax cleanser and bleach makes a noxious gas that burns the nose and makes it hard to breathe.

iMy wife's cousin died while cleaning the shower using this very combo. Literally was cleaning, and ended up inadvertently mixing the chemicals. She started having a problem breathing so she went out of the bathroom to catch her breath. It wasn't getting better, so she asked her kids to take to the hospital. An hour later, she was dead. Too easy to do by accident. Everyone knows you shouldn't mix chemicals, including her. It was just a case of having an issue getting her shower cleaned and not ventilating the room while she was doing it. She switched cleaners and the next thing you know she is gone. I feel like high seniors should get a class that teaches real world things like how to make a budget, how to do your basic taxes, sign up for insurance, issues with student loans, and what the dangers are in a home (carbon monoxide, chemical mixing, fire safety, etc). Just the stuff that everyone should know, but may have been missed. Make it a pre-req for graduation.

What a sad story! I'm so sorry that this happened, Jerry. I upvoted you for the valuable information at the end, which I completely agree with. Young adults should be prepared for the world of adulthood and there are too many concepts that are inadvertently left out by both parents and educators. I managed a department of 15 employees, many of whom were young millennials or Gen Z, and they all needed to be shown how to address an envelope and what a check looks like when it's made out to someone. They all had no idea because they do everything electronically.

I don’t know why it works, but people are more attuned to hearing their friend’s name yelled in distress than their own. This is why hospitals and medical clinics ask for biological sex on their admission forms. It's because men and women can sometimes present/react differently to certain diseases and need to be treated appropriately according to their biological sex and not their identifying gender. (No judgement - they're trying to save lives).

Back pain, "indigestion", etc. also are indicators in *both* biological sexes. Many a widowmaker made a widow because someone popped antacids or Tylenol. The location in your back is key: UPPER back. I capitalize to make sure you understand: Shoulder blade territory. And it's not stomach. It's upper abdomen and GI tract (can feel liek acid reflux spasm).... MD clarifying so people won't panic. Thank you.

In what universe is this fair? You will have abdominal pains every month throughout your child bearing years.. but they might be heart attacks. I reckon most women get used to what is normal for their body but I hate it when "common symptom" could also be "sign of something super serious". "Feeling thirsty is a sign your left foot is going to fall off." "OMG I felt thirsty just yesterday!"

This is not limited to choking. The risk of fatality goes up the longer the violent relationship goes on. Each act of violence is viewed as a tacit approval to the abuser of how much they can get away with, which is why the violence only escalates. It takes an average of seven attempts to successfully leave a DV situation and the time when the risk of fatality is the highest is when the victim is trying to extricate themselves from the relationship.

Heart problems present differently in women than they do in men. My mom was very exhausted and had excruciating jaw pain. Her boss’ mother was a nurse for many years and told my mom to get to an ER stat. One quadruple bypass and almost 6 years later and my mom is thankfully still here, currently en route to see her friend.

Do not go out the way you came in if you can help it. That's the most likely way people will crush to get out b/c that's the way they know they came in. When you sit down, if you can pick your seat, sit near an exit opposite the entrance door.

Never ever pull out a deadly weapon (as in knife) in a fight if you do not intend to use it right away. If the other guy gets their hands on it, there is a strong possibility that they will use it on you instead.

yep and a lot of people get shot by their own guns that was laying around. Having a gun in your home might make you feel secure, but it can be a false security as it is just as good weapon when pointing at you as it is when it points away from you. Drawing a weapon escalates a conflict and elevates it into another and more dangerous level, so think twice before doing so.

If it tastes sparkling it could be fermented. I have had (accidentally and unknowingly) fermented pineapple and watermelon) and it was delicious, but I was forced to stop eating it because it could have been dangerous and/or alcoholic (I didn’t get drunk and I didn’t get sick). No chance I’m allergic to either.

I just read that mangoes are in the same family as poison ivy. Eating a mango can cause the same skin rashes and irritations as Poison Ivy. Wiki: "The anacardiaceae family of trees, sometimes called the cashew family, includes mango, poison ivy, poison oak, sumac, Peruvian pepper, pistachio, and you guessed it, cashews" I've also read to never ever ever ever feed cashews to squirrels, dogs, birds or animals.

Not true with pineapple. Pineapples have enzymes that start to digest you before you start to digest the pineapple. This is why pineapple is a good meat tenderizer.

Internet Users Are Sharing 'Unknown' Facts That Could Save Your Life, And Here Are 40 Of The Most Useful Ones If anyone is ever getting electrocuted around you do NOT touch them directly. Instead use some sort of object to get them away from the object they are holding or touching. You can use a belt wrapped around a waist (again be careful not to touch them), a broom, mop, fast moving office chair, hell if its that serious you can drop kick them out of contact. Can't tell you how many people have gotten themselves electrocuted grabbing someone stuck to something.

If you have nothing to use and this is your child who you are in no way just going to leave to be electrocuted, tackle them. Take a running start and leap at them making sure your feet are not touching the ground when you connect with them. This is terribly dangerous advice and should be your literal last resort in the situation where you cannot live without trying to save said person and are okay with risking your life to do so.

Also note that the object must be insulating, like dry wood or plastic. Using a metal rod is as worse as touching directly. If you can get to the circuit breaker use that one instead. And go to the ER immediately, electrical accidents can mess up your heart in a way that you may suffer an cardiac arrest even up to 24 hours later.

If you’re ever involved in an active shooter incident outdoors, take cover behind the engine block of a car. Rifle rounds will go straight through most vehicles, but the engine can stop them. If you’re indoors don’t hug the walls (stay about a foot off) and get through doorways as quickly as possible. Kind of sad that my MOUT training is also applicable in day to day life in America.

I’ve been in an incident like this last year in 6th grade . I suggest staying away from windows and hiding yourself as best as possible .I don’t give a damn if its uncomfortable or it hurts. Don’t hide in areas with sharp objects . Keep a self defense weapon with you at all time so if said shooter runs out of ammo and tries to hit you , you can fight back. I find pens with fine fine tips useful. Don’t try to fight the shooter. You will die . Call 911 immediately where your school goes into lockdown

The mantra for active shooter drills is Run, Hide, Fight. Run away to safety if you can—-and grab as many other people as you can while running. Some people become paralyzed with fright and will not move on their own, so you have to grab them and push or pull them to start their legs moving too. Hide if you can’t run, and again try to grab people to hide with you if you can. Fight the shooter only as a last resort, and I don’t necessarily mean fight them alone or use your fists. Throw heavy objects at then, or at least in their path to slow them down, as you run/look for somewhere to hide. The more people doing that with you, the better. (5 years with TSA—-I’ve been through these drills many times.)

This does not apply to EVs, which you should stay far away from. A bullet could start a battery fire, which is hotter, more dangerous, and harder to extinguish than most other types of fires.

The odor is created when lightning rips nitrogen and oxygen molecules apart, creating ozone, which is then carried by the wind to ground level. People have described the smell of ozone in different ways — chlorine, bleach, electricity, and burning plastic to name a few. It can smell sweet, or even metallic. For the more imaginative, some say it reminds them of the summertime. Source: https://housefresh.com/what-does-ozone-smell-like/

If you're outside and the weather is beautiful and you hear thunder, get inside. Lightning can strike as far away as ten miles from the storm. I live in FL and I hear it every summer. FL is the lightning strike capitol of North America. Just because the weather is great where you are at doesn't mean anything when you hear thunder.

Also don't be afraid to push down very hard (harder than you think). You may hear cracking sounds, this is the breaking of ribs. That is OK. It is better for someone to have broken ribs and be alive than to have perfect ribs in death because the person trying to keep them alive was afraid of hurting them. Weak compressions (on an adult that is) are unlikely to have the desired affect. On babies and small children however, you should definitely be more gentle.

An ex as a brother who misheard this as a child as 'underTOAD'. 'Be careful that the undertoad doesn't get you!' 'What... what does it look like?' 'You can't SEE it!' "You... you CAN'T?!?' And for years he was terrified of a giant invisible underwater toad that was going to grab him and drag him out to sea.

At first, you don't realize that you're not making any progress swimming back towards the shore. In the moment, you realize that you might panic, but don't panic start swimming parallel with the shore, at least 100 feet and then try swimming back towards the land. This is saved my life more than a dozen times living at the beach in San Diego.

Internet Users Are Sharing 'Unknown' Facts That Could Save Your Life, And Here Are 40 Of The Most Useful Ones If something is squirting blood, that’s an arterial bleed. You need a tourniquet. When applying a tourniquet, go high and tight. How tight? It’s gonna hurt. You’ll know the TQ is working when you can no longer feel a pulse on that arm/leg. Tourniquets CAN be improvised, but it is highly recommended to use a proper CAT tourniquet if available. Make sure to record the time (preferably in 24 time such as 0930) that the tourniquet was applied.

Pretty sure this is contraindicated if you can put pressure on the wound, instead. For femoral bleeds, we used to use a full, unpierced bag of IV saline wrapped in gauze. Equal pressure on the area without cutting off circulation to the rest of the limb.

OK, I had to calm down. 1. A major vein bleed will kill. 2. Tourniquet not to cut off all blood flow to affected region but *most* or you just caused an amputation (limb death from lack of blood flow). 3. If you don't have anything two-three fingers wide, then a skinnier thing will work (purse strap, for example) but honestly, please 4. Use your hands if you can, because 5. There is a technique for allowing some blood flow with a tourniquet and this really isn't it. Why do I say that? OK, how many people here know how to take a pulse on an ankle? and 6. tourniquet closest to trunk as possible, but a *seep* of blood is okay. Just remember that 7. the other end of the artery or vein may be severed, too so 8. Please just call 911, use direct pressure, and in a pinch, anything'll do ----- plastic shopping bags, socks, take off a shirt and use it, whatever. 9. Please don't wrench it down too far, you can cause damage.

In the military we were taught, esp in mass casualty situations, to mark a person who has a tourniquet -- on the face/forehead, somewhere visible with a "T". If you're not there when they arrive, this lets medics know so that they may take any special steps necessary with the patient.

"preferably in 24 time such as 0930" - would have worked better if they actually used a PM time to show what that means. For those unfamiliar, for example 1PM is 1300, 6:30PM is 1830 etc.

Use a tourniquet as a last resort - elevate the wound above the heart, apply direct pressure on the wound, and find an arterial pressure point between the heart and the wound first. If you do have to apply a tourniquet, but don't have a pen or marker, as gross as it sounds, use the victim's blood to write the time applied...

Problem there is that pure natural gas is odourless. They add a chemical to it so that you can smell it when it leaks.

In the late 90's in my area a brand new house exploded the very first night the family moved in to it when someone flipped a light switch. The kids got blown out of the upstairs windows on to the lawn and survived. But the parents fell through the floor in to the basement (where the explosion came from) and the mother died. The father was badly burned. All because someone was careless when they built the house - apparently the gas and electric lines were too close together and something was leaking. A neighbor smelled gas but the house blew while he was one the phone with 911. It's a horrifying story.

If you are in a jungle or something and have doubt on what fruit is edible and what isn't, look at the monkeys and what they eat. Also fishes tend to be the safest bet on what to eat, followed by common insects (but you have to see another animal eat them first), ironically plants are the most dangerous SPECIALLY if you don't know what species can be venomous

Cultural baggage. We usually associate foodborne illness with meat because historically, in societies with agriculture, meat is what's always been hard to prep and preserve safely and consistently, and because most people who were going to get sick and die from soil or manure microbes already did so as children. Kind of doubly ironic that we've come full circle: hunter-gatherers didn't used to do much meat preservation so identifying safe plants was the trickier endeavor (not that hunting was easy, just that almost any meat could be made safe with enough heat for the short amount of time that it had to be safe); then agriculture made plants safer and more reliable at the cost of ready access to free, safe to eat megafauna (or rather, we may have started farming because we depleted local megafauna); now we're back to plants (salad greens specifically) causing most foodborne illnesses.

Raw insects can carry bacteria and parasites so they should be thoroughly cooked. Grasshoppers and crickets as an example can have nematodes. Also, native people likely have built up an immunity or resistance to a lot of pathogens so just becaus they can eat things raw doesnt mean that its safe for you to do so. https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/eating-insects-safely

Also not that there is this nasty phenomenom where there is not enough air for things to burn, but there is still enough heat for a material to outgas all the volatile combustable gases. When it happens, it will result in a lot of smoke, that can fill up an entire building. When the conditions change, so the air supply suddently becomes plentyfull, e.g. because the roof collaps or someone opens a door, all the gasses will combust almost at once (think of it as all the smoke burning), resulting in an explotionlike development. It is called a flash over, and can set an entire building on fire almost instantly. You must therefore think twice before opening a door in a burning building, as what could meet you could be an enormous flame shooting straight into your face.

Eating +24h old cooked pasta that has not been refrigerated can be deadly if you're knifed or shot badly and is about to pass out and wont be able to put pressure on it, make sure the wound is at least pointed upwards when lying down as u will bleed out much slower. if injected with an unknown venom, don't ice the area, most venoms become less effective if you instead heat the troubled area instead. If stranded in the desert, don't save ur water, drink it when u are thirsty, a lot of people pass out and die with still water left because they were saving it

If you're bleeding (cut or shot) hold it above your heart, it will help keep the blood in your body. If something bites or stings you, hold it below your heart. That will lower the risks of it spreading around your body. (Examples: Cut your foot? Lay down and elevate your foot. Snake bit your foot? Sit and stay upright.) Bites and stings trump bleeding in most cases.

My parents carried me into the water, held my legs and torso up and explained the motion I had to do. I was swimming with the support for some rounds until my mom/dad let go of my legs. I kept swimming. Then they'd let go of my torso and let me swim alone until I felt like I could keep myself up anymore. I cant swimm well, I know that, and I dont go swimming often. But I can keep myself up for some time, know how to breaststroke and backstroke. Been enough for vacation and some boat trips (with safety equipment).

Won’t save your life but will save your teeth: don’t use mouthwash after brushing your teeth with toothpaste, it just washes the fluoride away. Instead what you should do is brush with toothpaste after breakfast, then use mouthwash after eating lunch, then brush with toothpaste before going to bed.

Do not use mouthwash at all unless you need to disinfect a sore in your mouth. Then just use saltwater. Universal bad breath is a non existent issue invented by the mouthwash industry to sell mouthwash. Plus the mouth and throat have a healthy natural good bacteria similar to the beneficial bacteria in the gut. You do not want to kill it off with mouthwash. Bad breath only occurs after eating strong foods and mouthwash does not stop it the odor it comes from the stomach and lungs.

Not only does it help me see how many times I need to wipe to keep my heiny clean, it's a good way of keeping track of my immediate digestive health as well as keeping an eye out for anything unusual in color or texture (or blood).

If a cow is trying to charge you, it’s best to hit them in the nose with all the force you have, it’ll buy you a few seconds. Their heads are hard as hell, the nose is the softest & most sensitive spot. In addition, if you’re ever in a situation with large animals, even the sweetest of large animals, ALWAYS be aware of an escape route should you need it.

And never walk closely behind a horse, especially if you don't know it very well (there is a risk of "flying hind legs", and those can go surprisingly high. You must always be cautious of where your feed are when near a horse, and where it places its hooves. It may be the gentlest of horses, but even those will make mistakes onces in a while and step on you by accident. While it may not kill you, having a 100+ kg on you foot still hurts a lot, and it is difficult to get enough leverace to push the horse aside with one foot fixed right underneed it.

cows are curious like heck... if you don't run, they won't run, they just wanna know what the hell ur doing in their field... the moment you start running they'll do the same... also, if they've got horns and you want to move them away from you, grab them and push them up & backwards... cows can't look up, so the upward pressure on their horns will make them walk backwards... want a cow to move sideways, just put firm pressure on their side with a flat hand, they'll go sideways... and if you rub them over their heads, don't get surprised that they'll lick you... they're basically big puppies...

When I did, I was told I was a liar, delusional, or that I was mistaken. I even describe the action, and I was still told that it was not possible. a bit vague, but alway be aware of your surroundings, im not saying to be paranoid, just know where emergency exits are, in cinemas for example, choose the emergency exit row. if you are walking in an area you dont know, keep an eye out for alley ways etc, if you see an alley on your left ahead of you, cross over to the right before you get there, basically, just always take the safest option and be aware of your surroundings, assess situations etc....

Tsunamis don't only happen in oceans. Any large enough body of water can have a tsunami. In fact, some megatsunamis didn't even occur in oceans. In 1958, a fjord in Alaska recorded a tsunami after an earthquake caused a landslide. It about 524 meters (1,720 feet). With this information, the warning signs of a tsunami or a tsunami like wave should be taken to consideration in areas such as lake and dams.

They're really overselling the chances a black bear will kill you. Less than one person a year in North America dies due to black bear attacks, which are apparently mostly defensive because someone got too close. I believe the reason they say to fight back against a black bear has more to do with their lower likelihood of wanting to fight with you than this idea they'll start eating you if they think you're dead (and with their sense of smell, I don't think for a second they're likely to be confused as to whether you're dead). The laying down for a brown bear I believe has more to do with the fact that, unlike with black bears, a brown bear is more than willing to fight if provoked (and not because they think you're dead).

The majority of aircraft accidents happen on the ground, during take off and landing. When you board an aircraft always count how many chairs are between you and the emergency exit. If you are in an incident that involves fire then you will be wanting to stay below the smoke that is rising above you and rapidly filling the cabin. As the smoke fills the cabin it will become dark, very dark, and you won't be able to see the exits. What you will be able to do is feel the seat legs as you crawl across the floor, and know that 13 rows ahead of you followed by a left of right turn is the exit.

most planes nowadays have track-lighting on the floor that'll tell you where the exits are... the track-lighting is also included in the systems that run on the RAT (Ram Air Turbine that drops from the belly of the plane if all engines fail, it generates enough power for basic flight instruments for the pilots as well as the track-lighting and several other important bits and pieces designed specifically for these types of emergency events)...

Internet Users Are Sharing 'Unknown' Facts That Could Save Your Life, And Here Are 40 Of The Most Useful Ones People who fish need to know this - Eel blood (and by extension eel flesh)is a deadly poison before it is cooked or digested IF it gets into your bloodstream, such as through a cut. It contains an ichthyotoxin that essentially - even in tiny amounts - make your muscles (including your heart and diaphragm) cramp, which could quickly cause death. Eels are always served cooked in Japanese restaurants for this reason. Digestion “could” digest the toxin, but you may have a cut in your mouth or throat, for example. Preparing eels for the smoker or to cook must be done very carefully, ideally wearing waterproof cut-proof gloves. I am always shocked that so many people who fish do not know this. Eel is delicious and safe if properly prepared. Nothing to worry about if it is completely cooked. I adore it!

The same is true for some mushrooms. My family has always picked and eaten Amanita rubescens mushrooms. I was adult when I learned it actually contains a toxin, but it's destroyed when you cook it. Yet, we never had problems, since even a quick frying of the caps seems to work.

Checking your tires- Tires have build dates and “expire”. Regardless of the amount of tread depth tires should be replaced every 6-7 years. This can save you from an unexpected blow out or crash.

Had a girl in my class (teenage years), who exactly displayed these symptoms. First we thought she was developing an eating disorder, as the weight lost was quite noticeable - thinking she replaced her meals by constantly drinking water. Luckily she got to get checked by a doctor, who found the reason. After being prescribed insulin she recovered really quickly.

I would also like to add to this list extreme headaches/migraines without an apparent reason, often accompanied by vomiting, loss of appetite, and tiredness. Those specific symptoms were what got my sister checked out and eventually led to her being diagnosed with Type One at 12.

not the excessive hunger (that happens when your glucose levels are too low, basic body instinct to crave food)... having constant extreme high blood glucose levels causes your mouth to dry out (your saliva production basically drops to practically nothing), ppl with dry mouths don't eat very well, if any at all... (this was one of the main symptoms I had shortly before getting diagnosed), a UTI (urinary tract infection) is also a common symptom (caused by the frequent urination), as well as not being able to properly hold your body-temperature (you feel cold constantly, the moment the glucose levels come into proper range you'll feel yourself warm up again )... (again one of the symptoms I had)... the slow-healing bruises aren't linked solely to diabetes, it can have a million other reasons why they take a long time to heal (I'm a T1D and don't even get bruises, usually it's just a barely visible bump that hurts when you poke it)...

If you use any kind of gas appliance (oven, water heater, etc.) and the flame becomes yellow, shut it down, open the windows and breathe some fresh air. Yellowish flame, instead normal blue one, indicates incomplete combustion, which leads to carbon monoxide poisoning. The only exceptions are when you spill some salt nearby or have an air humidifier running, as these two things also have the ability to turn flame color yellowish. **But it doesn't work the other way around** - blue flame doesn't automatically mean there is no carbon monoxide being produced.

I LOVE gas because when you turn the burner off, it’s off. And you can leave the pot there to cool down. Electric ranges still have residual heat and you have to move the pot somewhere else if you don’t want it to continually cook.

I found one exception. I called the gas company out twice and they couldn’t figure it out until the third time. I was using a cold-mist humidifier which was putting a lot of water vapor in the air. This was turning my gas flame orange instead of blue. I was in no danger and when I stopped using the humidifier, the flame returned to blue. The gas man said they would be making it a part of their training to ask about humidifiers when they get a call about an orange/yellow flame.

Gas cooktops should only be used with an exhaust fan that is vented to the outside. It is now known that the quality of natural gas varies from place to place and can contain contaminants that are unhealthy to breath.

Help in case of a venomous snake bite: Unlike some popular misconceptions, you shouldn't suck out the venom, cut the bite wound, or apply any ice or water before seeking professional medical treatment. You should help the injured person lie down and cover their wound with a sterile bandage. Then you should remove any jewelry from the wounded area. If the person was bitten in the leg, you should remove their shoes too.

A beeping detector quickly becomes background noise for some people. When I worked in a call center and heard the beep over the phone, I would always mention it and remind the caller to replace the battery. It was amazing how many callers were surprised into awareness.

In a new house my mom had bought (we were the first owners), one of the smoke detectors didn’t alert it was on low battery. Instead it died, and as a failsafe, went off. At 3:37 AM. It triggered all the other alarms in the house and I discovered that if it was a real fire, I would have been dead. I sat and had a panic attack in my top bunk and couldn’t bring myself to move.

They reason why they say right, is that you usually only have to yield to turn right and not have to take a chance at stopping to turn left. If someone is actually following you, waiting to turn left, may not be a wise choice.
