We usually expect things to go the worst possible way—whether it’s failing that crucial exam you need to get into uni, or getting painfully rejected by your best friend who you’ve been in love with since childhood. There’s something liberating about expecting the most dreadful scenario, but nothing feels better than when it turns out the opposite.
Luckily, the internet is a magical place and there’s a little corner for everything: the bad and the impossibly good. Like this community on Reddit, r/UnexpectedlyWholesome, which has been sharing incidents and cases that took a U-turn for the wholesome for the past three years since its launch on February 19, 2017.
From a boyfriend praying on Twitter for his girlfriend’s period to come today, to a landlord who said no pets allowed in the property, some things are made to have exceptions and the most wholesome outcomes. No spoilers, but who doesn’t love happily-ever-after endings?

We stan the gays. Also, to those bigoted homophobes commenting, shut the f*ck up. Just because you're religious doesn't mean you can force it onto everyone else. If you don't have anything kind to say, then don't say anything at all.
Exactly! My Nan used to tell me that and I’ve said it myself a few times to ignorant idiots. Homophobes go home!

Thank you for giving your cat another chance. She is a dear friend, and part of the family as well. It was the best decision you could have made. She was not ready to leave you.
Great that you made that decision. But if your cat's life could be saved and it would have quality of life, it was the only decision. No contest.
It seems like kitty was trying to tell her that too. "I'm not ready to give up, please don't give up on me".
Load More Replies...Any pet owner should love them enough that their life is more important than material goods.
I'm sorry, but I don't see what's special about this post. Wouldn't any pet owner prioritize its pet over a gaming pc? That's just plain logical to me.
I'm more upset they were going to put the cat down in the first place, imagine if that poor cat's soul wasn't able to crawl onto owner's lap.. that's sad. And I know money can be a problem but they clearly had the money, big shame on owner imo :/ could go on about this all day fking hate people that have pets and don't give them the love and care they deserve, pets give unconditional love and what do some of these prks give back?
They probably thought the cat wouldn't make it and it'd be better to put them down than to let them suffer.

Load More Replies...I had a dog. When she was old, her health problems started. Diagnosis took ages. Turned out she had pancreatitis. And she was diagnosed with diabetes. We did not even count how much money it costed. And how many sleepless nights when I was sitting with her on the floor of the vet clinic, holding her drip. The vet told us that after diabetes diagnosis, she would live only 6 months more. It was not true. She lived 3 years more. I would do anything possible to save my pet.
@Ola Polowczyk Me & my ex-husband did the same 12 year's ago! Our cat baby Cassie Jo was diagnosed with kidney disease & they gave her less then a week, well it happens her mama was also just diagnosed with kidney disease a year prior so we asked if we could give her daily dialysis like me & they said it won't do any good & its so expensive, we gave her dialysis every nite & got a routine down & my beautiful baby lived 5 more year's with me, worth every penny she was! And I finally got a kidney transplant 6 year's ago & my baby Cassie Jo still is my forever guardian cat angel looking after me & her two baby sister's!
Load More Replies...Downvoted. The OP had the money, but wasn't going to use it on his injured pet if the cat hadn't crawled into his lap? Who even doesn't put your badly injured cat in a box or cat carrier? Who even needs a sad little lick to save a life?
My sister's cat was incredibly sick and the vet bill was going to cost her $2,500 for the surgery. Everyone told my sister to put him down and that she would be crazy to spend that kind of money on a cat. My sister was going through a real hard time when it happened so when she called me crying I told her I would split the cost with her because it wasn't spending thousands of dollars on a cat, it was spending thousands of dollars on her to have her best friend with her during her time of need.
It feels like we’re living in a drought of good news. The past year hasn’t been an easy one and the general emotional state of people around the globe is not the best one. And how could it be otherwise with what we’ve all been dealing with lately?
But it turns out that feel-good news like this wholesome post can bring much-needed health benefits, especially in times of crisis. One study from Brigham Young University proved that sharing positive experiences, events, and stories has immense perks. The researchers invited participants to keep a journal of grateful experiences over four weeks, and share them with a partner twice a week. Those partners who received good news reported being in a better mood overall.
Gang Of Hagrids
I might be generalizing here, but bikers are generally very kind, loyal and good people. Sure, they look tough, but a lot of them are just big teddy bears with hearts of gold. I grew up with them, felt very protected and loved. In here they do a lot of charity work and helping people out. Like big, handsome, bearded knights on metal steeds. I love them.
Don't judge by appearances. My FIL looks like the most uptight guy *ever* and yet he sings his wife's cat to sleep every night ----- he hates cats and is allergic to them to boot!
That’s nice. A biker being gentle is such a played out trope. An uptight dude being a secret silly cat loving weirdo, now that’s saucy.

Someone once made a cruel joke about it to his face, and he said very clearly "The only person allowed to take the piss out of my stutter is my mate here. Not only has he earned that right, but he also does it better!" I looked at him with a look of surprise and shock and said "F**king hell! You didn't even stutter once" I then nodded with smug sarcastic approval while clapping. He looked back at them and said "See? Now piss off you amateur!" In case you are wondering, he is a DJ, and he runs his own Reprographics company.
If this doesn't tell you what needs fixing with how society both treats men and people with disabilities I don't know what to say
I start to stutter when I get nervous. I would hate for someone to not want to talk to me over it.

That is such a sweet story. And, your maternal grandfather seems like the coolest guy. Many people would have looked down on someone who was a sanitation engineer. I respect people who make an honest living.
Yes. Why is it that as I read the story, my first thought was, "Why was she chasing after a garbage man?" Why is that surprising? I'm sure many garbage men are great husbands. And I'm told they make good money, because, nobody wants to be a garbage man for the pleasant working conditions or job satisfaction.

When i told him that we can't do that...he looks at me, grabbed me and dipped me and gave me the biggest kiss...a week after that, we were in Lafontaine park...he stopped dead, told me he needed me to sit, and said that he had something to tell me...this is it, i thought, he's breaking up with me..."it's all your fault...i am falling in love with you..." we were only together for 3 1/2 years, but even though i lost him, 28 even after 28 years of being his widower, i would never change anything...i still love him....
Delightful and wonderful story. Tells the children the importance of an honest day's work!
Moreover, reading bad news is able to stir up the hormones and spark the neurotransmitters that alter our mood. In the same way, exposing ourselves to positive information has a calming effect. According to the positivity advocate and writer Celia Abernethy, human-interest stories not only make us feel happier, they also increase trust and hope in humankind. “Stories about improved living and health conditions are uplifting and encouraging.”
Stories with happy endings, wholesome twists, and wonderful people assure readers that whatever happens, we will be fine because the world is full of great human beings. This hopeful thinking is what we critically need these days.

This is 100% something I did and still do when doing something I've never done before. I've still never ordered from a Starbucks for this exact reason.
You can always get the app and make your order from your phone. You don't even have to use the app to order, since, with the app you can see all the order options, then you have a better feel for what you'd want to drink from reading the descriptions and seeing what the options are.

Load More Replies...I'm sorry, this person who has supposedly been in a coma for three months looks FAR too healthy for that. Not the least bit drawn, not super skinny (which I would expect if you hadn't been able to eat for three months and was being fed through a tube), nor does this look like the room/bed of a coma patient. As much as we'd all like to believe this is a true story, it just doesn't scream "three month coma" to me.
Uh, yeah, old meme is old. Also, that's not what someone looks like waking from a months-long coma, that's what someone looks like getting ready for minor outpatient surgery.

Turns out my prankster grandfather decided "oink" was going to be my first word and talked the whole family, including my dad, into saying nothing but oink whenever my mom wasn't in the room. I have an old 8mm movie of an aunt holding me at a 4th of July picnic with everyone there saying nothing but "oink" for 5 minutes. I was lucky to grow up in a place of humor and love and absurdity is still my favorite type of funny.
I'm Not Gonna Spoil Anything, Just Read It And You'll See
I was walking my cat in the front garden on a leash and some guy in a car rolled down the window and yelled "I LIKE YOUR CAT!" and then drove off. So, there's two types of catcalling that are acceptable.
English is not my first language, but understand the meaning of catcalling. I never payed attention to the name after I found one of the cats that live in my job (tv station, lots of space) and started to call her... and it hit me (the realization, not the cat). So disgusting some people do that to others.

So GOOD! If people took the same amount of time to praise people as they did to complain then this would be a far better world..

We did that at restaurants a few times. One time our server was fantastic, but people at the other table were mean to her. We noticed that and asked to speak to a manager. Poor girl got so worried, but when the manager arrived, my husband and I expressed how amazing out service was. She just stood there and didnt know what to do, but you could see it made her night (and yes, we tipped her really well too to show our appreciation!). It doesnt cost anything to be nice to people. (But we did get 2 free desserts from the manager🙈 and a bottle of wine next time we visited the same restaurant)

That was a nice gesture for sure, but I have a valid complaint to make about blizzards and that is they stopped making chocolate Cherry blizzards and when they take it out of the container into your cup they don’t scrap out a quarter of the blizzard that is left in the container. An Unexpected Friendship
I don’t understand that logic, since when can you only call your friends by their first name. I understand there is an etiquette when it comes to teachers, elders and royalty etc but not every Tom, D**k or Harry.

Goby Saves The Day
Instead of placing garbage cans around this beach, the city made a giant see-through fish out of some barbed wire and meshm and added a sign that says "Goby loves plastic, please feed him". Kids love feeding Goby, who is usually full by the end of the day, and taken away by the city.
But with different sea creatures each time! Like a pufferfish or a squid would be epic...

That mug has certainly made the rounds. It has now become a family heirloom.
I have a knife like this. We call it the “family knife” because we all move around all the time and constantly revamp things, but the knife has been around since like 1994 and it just switches official owners. I have it now but I think I’ll give it to my dad since he just came back to the states.

One day I met an old neighbour that'd moved away in the shopping mall of my home town. When we lived in the same street, she had had breast cancer twice. They became ill from exposure and the adults died. The 4 children were also ill, and were returned to the island. The sick children likely exposed other tribe members. This is such a sad tale. I'm sure there were other deaths. No wonder they are hostile to outsiders.
They once stopped their aggressiv behaviour towards indian ethnologists when those were accompanied by a female scientist for the first time. They even started accepting the Gifts from the indians and brought their children to the beach. Shortly afterwards the indian government changed their policy towards natives and the Sentinels are to be left alone.
I think I heard a couple years ago they did let someone in. I think she was the first woman to attempt to enter and they trusted her more? (BTW I don't think guys are bad or anything, this is just what I heard.

I think that I am getting to the point where I am okay because I told myself that for a stocking stuffer for Christmas, I am going to make my family Christmas cookies. I am only come up with ideas like that when I am truly happy.
Sounds like a great idea. Tis the season for baking. I'm getting ready. :-)

Unexpectedly Wholesomeness
I have similar memories with my dad. He died 42 years ago, I'm 58 now, and I never forget that love and care he show in that subtle and warm way to me, my younger sister and my little brother.
First time I took my daughter on a roller coaster, she was five. Just before the big drop, I said "I'm kinda scared." She put her hand on my arm and said "It's okay, Daddy."
I would do this with my kids when they were little. Especially my son. He really struggled to sleep alone in the dark. I asked if he was brave enough to share my space with me. He said he would be there!! It didnt last long and I am glad he grew out of his fear of the dark. I however, miss that time.
A child is never too old to sleep in their parents‘ bed, and I‘m so happy this dad was so understanding and clever.
Whenever I got scared at bedtime as a kid, I'd sleep with my parents, right in between them and imagine the power rangers fighting off monsters in the living room to protect us
Gordon Ramsey Hood Edition
And does he still add a lil something, something to his goodies lol.
If you want more wholesomeness I recommend checking out this guy's comics, they're really funny and light :)
It Never Came
It took a moment. I thought he wanted the infant to start her period and I thought that was all kinds of f****d up. Now I get it.
He originally hoped that he didn't get this girl pregnant, but obviously, she was and now he's a proud dad :)

Awwwww This Is Absolute Poggers
if anyone here knows the iron druid chronicles by kevin hearne: you know oberon and how he talks. i just imagined him being a film doggo and just so happy that he can't stop waggling his tail xD (okay this comment is very random)
Thank you for giving me something new to read. I love urban fantasy and after finishing Simon R. Green´s works, I found myself bored.
Load More Replies...This reminds me of the story I saw where a guy had to take his dog to the vet. He came home and the dog wagged its tail so hard from excitement it sprained it!
I was in the vet office's parking lot with my dog for her yearly check-up. She was so excited she wagged her tail too hard against the seat upholstery and split the end of her tail open. Blood everywhere from what looked like a pinprick. The wound wouldn't heal so she had to have her tail amputated. I tell everyone she wagged her tail off. She still cannot control her wag.
Load More Replies...I've always wondered why the dogs tails are not constantly wagging in the movies
I can’t not think of Taylor lautner in twilight having to have his head pet my Kristen Stewart lmao
My Neighbor Almost Had My Mom Worried For His Safety
Lol. I did the same to my mum. We were going to my grandmother birthday and i send her a picture of a wardrobe i found at an antique dealer for my grandma. She replied "how on earth would i get that into my car?!Are you crazy?!". It was an antic doll wardrobe, i was really proud of my prank and my grandma loved it, it's still on display in her living room.

Turned His Life Around
Uh I feel like running a restaurant that was funded by food stamps is illegal?
Probably using their free will to make their own decisions. Whatever those might be. Do you think that the owners of McDonald's are at fault for the obesity they caused. No, they have a product. You choose if you want that product. Same for drug dealers.
Load More Replies...Wholesome Dealer
Ummm, hmmm okay. I am a bit conflicted, he is selling drugs which can cause serious mental health issues, illness and death and then he goes and does that and slightly redeems himself. A drug dealer with a conscience.
I feel like the question was actually the police trying to find drug dealers..... lol
Yeah seems like you'd be dumb to reply (if you were a dealer). Kind of felt similarly about the "Prostitutes of reddit" (why would anyone want to identify themselves as a prostitute? Even if they were...)
Load More Replies...It's initially kind of weird that an opiate dealer looks out for people's wellbeing. if you looked out for people's wellbeing you wouldn't be selling opiates, would you? would be fascinated to talk to this person (the dealer)
If they're convinced that opiates are not a bad thing, they don't think of themselves as poison merchants. And there sure are reason not to think opiates are bad, but on the other hand, street drugs of any kind are bad for sure...
Load More Replies...I read about a similar incident in Rayya Elias' memoir, Harley Loco. I can't do the story justice, but basically she'd been a hardcore drug addict for years. After more than a year sober, she had a personal crisis that sent her back to the streets, desperately trying to score drugs. She too was refused by her old dealer. There were other people that fateful night, including an undercover cop, people you wouldn't think would help a former junkie but they did just that. It honestly seemed like divine intervention. The book was great, by the way.
Do What Makes You Happy
Oh yes, I had to turn off my favorite radio station yesterday because they started blasting Andy Williams. I LOVE Christmas, but beginning everything too soon seems to take some of the magic out of it.

I'm considering mixing my Halloween skeletons and xmas sparkly bits together
I always had a habit of putting up my tree just around Thanksgiving and taking it down just after my birthday on March 9th. Once, I had my Christmas tree up from November of 2015 until March of 2017. My friend / roommate who lived with my wife and I, put it up for me when I was working absurd hours. He died of a heart attack at age 50 on my couch in 2016. I never had the heart to take it down. I finally did. After my birthday of 2017.

What the hell is he talking about? I don't see any resemblance. The one on the left is fake, just some random dude. Ryan looks cool in yellow t shirt though..
Thanks Foxxy for me backing up, I had to go back and read my comment. Cause if I bhad interchange the 2 by mistake I would really come out as an a hole. BTW, my dear itz_your_girl, I was making a joke, i really don't understand what offended you. Could you please explain?

My mom is a terrible cook q.q She always tries to invent "healthy alternatives" but she fundamentally doesn't understand cooking, so she just ends up baking everything at 350 for 30 mins.

I'm from the UK and have grown up with curries, but when I lived in India, I went out to a small-time restaurant in a regular little town and ordered my meal. When I started on it, the flavours were mind-blowing! We think of curries being good here, but imagine them being ten times better than the best one you've had. The difference is the ingredients coming from that place and being fresh. To any Indians reading, I thank you. You gave me the best culinary experience of my life.

The party will have cannons full of glitter and fabulousness. All people are invited, except for homophobes, racists, and misogynists. There will be rainbow champagne and rainbow cupcakes. Unicorns, too. There will be a drag show as well. Basically a party full of fabulousness and gayness.

A Message I Received After The Christchurch Terrorist Attack Killing A Family Member
I'm beginning to think racism as a mental illness rather than a character flaw.
I love that they came back 96 days later to apologize. It implies that it remained on their mind, they didn't forget what they said which shows that it weighed heavily on them. Pain is infectious and the only thing harder than facing anger and abuse with understanding and empathy is accepting that response and working to make yourself a better person and correcting your past actions.
I absolutely hate how everyone on reddit uses "c**t" as an insult. Those people are all sexists.

It’s because you are missing an ingredient, Grandmother’s love. Now there are alternatives but they aren’t as pure in quality.
I'm not being sarcastic at all, having grandparents who lived through the war. I wouldn't be surprised if the recipe involved oleo and sawdust.
same here, my grandfather was used to make a dessert on my birthday every year , the last time he made it he known it would be the last and i was so selfish i miss it . every year i miss that day i don't spent with him

So much on this post annoys me. Like at what age will she learn spelling and grammar!? And why those four?! Three similar job, three same nationality, three same decades active, etc etc, but not four? Why two misanthropes and a depressive? Are these the ones that come to mind when you speak of child prodigies (follow Hardy and mathematics is the obvious domain...)?
I dropped out of high school after the 9th grade. I recently received my 3rd promotion within a years span of time working in human research while also graduating with honors with my Masters degree. A Caring Developer
Fairly wholesome but it still should have been made free. I bet there are other extra options that don't help disabled people and could be easily behind a paywall (I understand the creator deserves to be paid). Now it seems like every single disabled person should have to write which seems ridiculous.
Not really. Audiobooks are an accessibility feature to many, yet not free.
Load More Replies...Anyone here with smiliar issues who can confirm or deny that a dark mode is explicitly required? I just wonder because any electronic devices I have offer a brightness setting. In contrast, most of the app games on my phone don’t have any dark mode.
I have slight light sensitivity (which has been worse this year). Dark mode is much better than just brightness settings. Watching a movie at 0% brightness is awful. Watching it in dark mode takes all the annoying side light away while still leaving the movie watchable.

more often than not it is better to be told straight that things will go bad, whilst other things will be good. My own personal opinion is its better to be told straight rather than be told everything gets better and to have a positive attitude in life

Wholesome Army Recruiter
Thanks everyone. I think I should clarify that I wasn‘t shocked because they had your number, but because it‘d be absolutely unthinkable in my country to get text messages from an army recruiter. It just seems so close to those unsolicited advertising calls you get from shady companies.

In the military, you get the stuff for free you get for (kind of) free in europe anyway - like healthcare insurance. They eff you over by depriving the entire country of a system that actually works - and then offer it if you risk your life for other people's profit. Of which you won't get the smallest share.

That's My Cousin
So much oohs, aahs and awws and I absolutely loved it. This post has made my day and I certainly needed this. Thank you 😊
I read through all of them. This so wholesome, that’s a guarantee. ☺️
Since we are telling wholesome stories, I got one: One day, heavy wind knocked a tree branch onto my apartment sidewalk. When I came home expecting to have to walk around it, it was gone. Turns out the short and small elderly lady who lives next door to me moved it all by herself. I plan to do something special for 🎄 for her for doing that.
I love it when neighbours connect :) I used to move a lot and never really knew my neighbours, but I've been in one house since my kid was born, and I've gotten to know my neighbours on either side: we can natter for hours, I come and fix technology things or do computer help, and they can watch my son on the odd occasion I need to pop out to get groceries and my kid is in bed etc. It is nice :)
