Small acts of kindness can go a long way, we never know when someone could use a wee boost.
And everything aligned in the universe to give this guy something that he needed, and touching the heart of another.
My spouse once ordered Thai food after googling the name of the restaurant. Turns out, there's another Thai restaurant 2,500 miles away with the same name. The first Google result was that one, which led to a hilariously awkward phone call when the mistake was realized and we had to call to cancel. After we explained the mix-up, the staff were very kind about it, and we all laughed.
This is an act of kindness that goes two ways; the kindness of the gift of food and the kindness of the recipient for explaining how the gift has made a difference. This is how to people.
Today a lady and her husband came into our Home Depot and told us that the insurance company might not pay for their little boy’s walker, so they went on the internet and found plans to make one out of PVC pipe. My store manager heard about this and went over to them and said, "We got this."
We started putting it together and told the family to go and enjoy ice cream and come back in an hour. Other associates started jumping in and when the family came back it was done. Everyone was crying to see Logan walk around with the biggest smile on his face.
When the family tried to pay us, we said "No way, this one is on us."
What a wonderful act of kindness!
What a world we live in where someone in the wealthiest country on Earth can't get a piece of medical equipment for their child because insurance won't cover it. Healthcare should be a right.
It no longer is the wealthiest country in the world. Just a miniscule minority is financialy wealthy, but everyone is poor. Guns are considered more important than health, safety, decency, education and equality.
Load More Replies...Let's force women to give birth. Then when that bundle of joy is here, let's make it really difficult for them to be able to care for their child like they want. Make it difficult for them to get basic needs, healthcare, education, food... If they happen to have a child whith special needs, that's all on them. No extra help. When the time comes for them to go to school...don't do anything about gun control. Force women to have children that might no even live past 18...It's not just women being punished, it's their children too. It's heartbreaking. Why is someone's right to carry arms, more important than the lives these guns can take?
Well they aren't "prolife" as they claim. They are pro birth only. Then
Load More Replies...It's a lovely story, but it's presented as a feel-good story instead of an example of the dystopian nightmare that is US health"care".
Yeah, this reminds me of that headline from last year or so "seven year old sells cookies to pay off his fellow students school lunch debt" (or something to that effect). Child labor to pay off child debt, aaahhhh America!!
Load More Replies...Great manager, great team. But damn it this is not kindness, this extremely awful that a child is left without walker and parents come up with alternative solutions. If women are forced to give birth the least a country can do is healthcare up to 18yr covered + free/affordable daycare + Hot food with veg/fruit... Great people working in store, parents are doing amazing not giving up and finding solutions, bad bad country to be living in, constantly relying on kindness and creativity.
Denying that cute little munchkin the ability to walk is just heartbreaking. Shame on you America. Thank goodness for individual Americans
this shouldn't happen we shouldn't need this this makes me furious that the world I will soon inherit has these systems in place
All it takes is a little kindness to make the world a nicer, more thoughtful place. Well done to all these wonderful people. :)
Insurance not covering the Walker is the real issue but such a kind story
That's a nice gesture, but it's disgraceful that this had to happen. America sucks. And yes, unfortunately I'm an American.
What also sucks is there is absolutely nothing we can do to change it. Regular Americans have no real power or influence. Sadly I truly believe voting is an illusion and neither party has anyone's interest in mind but their own. I think that creating a battle over who gets to vote is a red herring for the fact that it doesn't really make a difference. No politician is actually trying to change the system because anyone who does gets booted from the system before they can make real change. No one in power who is getting wealthy on taxpayer dollar wants the system to change. But maybe that's just my pessimism from the past few years talking.

Since sensational headlines get more attention, Jones says media outlets often end up focusing on disaster reporting—and rarely any positive news.
"Consuming too much of this kind of news, whether actively or passively, can be very toxic, and what you hear has an impact on your mood."
Truckers where I live are overworked, underpaid, and often taken advantage of as they work to "pay off" a big rig they're working to own. It used to be a great profession. My uncle used be a trucker and would stop for lunch whenever he was in town. No substantial raises in the market in 20 years though means a critical occupation with a lot of hurting people.
A good intro to some of the industry issues by John Oliver: https://youtu.be/phieTCxQRLA

Trucking must be a lonely job, so this probably meant the world to him.
When I was younger I used to go to my aunt's house very often. You can see the railway tracks from my aunt's terrace(it was really close).Sometimes when my uncle was traveling on a certain route we would be standing on the terrace and he would wave us goodbye from the train.
Having being the daughter of a trucker, this brings a tear to my eye. Missed him when he was down the road and miss him now. RIP Dad. Xxx
Me to, this is just to sad and wholesome to be true, this is what true love is
Load More Replies...Not only is this incredibly touching, the guy's actually right! Ignoring obvious factors, at a distance of 384,400 km and walking speed of 5 km/h, it would take 384,400 * 2 / 5 / 24 / 365.25 = 17.5 years. Comparing this to 82 this is a realistic age difference between a grandchild and grandparent. Just goes to show how much thought and love the dude put into this! He may even have been planning this especially for this one year. 😊
This makes me sad because my great grandmother passed away recently I only got to see her for 13 years of my life she died because of a disease that made her forget who she is and she forgot everyone in her family
It’s been 4 years since I last saw my grandpa. He make our life wonderful
It does not mention it here, but she did give it back to him when he recovered.
When I was in hospital I was really stressed because no one could feed my cat. One of the nurses went and fed him for me! I'll never forget her kindness!!
I wish I could like... volunteer to do this specifically for people like John. I wonder how hard it would be to start a program for people like John so that someone can basically foster their dog for them for free while they're receiving car so the person doesn't have to go into more debt or give up their beloved pets & because one of the most important things when you're sick is to have someone by your side. Don't matter if it's human or animal.. it can actually be the difference in someone giving up or not. I know from experience with my father. Everytime he opened his eyes and saw me next to him while sick with cancer.. he lit up & the nurses would tell me how happy it made him.. unfortunately my pops didn't make it very long but the time he had was spent in the company of the ppl he loved most & his own dogs. I think it extended his life some & gave us that extra time we may not have had if he didn't have hope & a reason to keep fighting. This story is beautiful.
Some pet rescues do take care of that kind of thing. I know a rescue I fostered for once agreed to take a woman's dog while she and her kids had to stay at a homeless shelter. I was the volunteer that was going to take the dog for a month or so. (The woman bailed, though, so it didn't happen.)

Consuming the news can activate the sympathetic nervous system, which causes our body to release stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Then, when a crisis is happening, and we are experiencing this stress response more frequently, Miller says physical symptoms may arise.
And I see you are an LCSW. You have used your hardship to grow compassion instead of bitterness. All the best to you, good sir.

How this infuriates me. 'At that time' was in the lifetime of many here on BP. This poor woman and many like her treated so badly because of skin colour. Aparteid, segregation, and of course various other illogical, cruel hatreds that we humans perpetuate.

My mother and grandmother (who are both very much alive) had to live in this nightmare in the Jim Crow south. Yet, people are always telling us to "just get over it". The aftermath of slavery was horrible and should be recognized as it still affects us today.
Jim Crowe laws. Colored only and whites only entrances, water fountains, resturants, everywhere in the US. It was shameful.

This emotional toll and negative effect on the psyche was demonstrated in a study that found people who watched negative material, as compared to those who watched positive or neutral material, showed an increase in both anxious and sad moods after just 14 minutes of viewing television news bulletins and programs.
In addition to an increase in anxious and sad moods, the researchers also found the results to be consistent with the theories of worry that implicate a negative mood as a causal factor in facilitating worrisome thoughts.
Is the guy on the right, in the yellow trousers, the same guy from the snuggling picture above? I suspect it may be. Good for him and his pal!
I am not an emotional person. I rarely cry. My niece was born with many special needs so I moved from veterinary medicine to human medicine and got a job at the children's hospital she all but lived at for the first 10 years of her life. We were told that she would likely be in a persistent vegetative state and would not be *here*, that she'd likely never walk etc... We *ALL* had a moment when she experienced Disneyland for the first time. Then on the second day when this kiddo who had never spoken an intelligible word in her life was throwing herself forward in her wheelchair laughing and saying Dis-Dis!! But the absolute kicker was watching her walk down main street. Yes, I said walk. albeit with a walker.. but dammit she fought hard for that moment!! We were all absolutely crying.
Never underestimate the power of mothers when told their child won't do something. Father's, too. My favorite person in the world is almost 34. His mother was told he would never see 1.
The doctors said that my little sister would die at birth and that would risk the health of my mom and they should just abort. My parents refused, they were going to have her at 28 weeks, but she stayed healthy and made it to 34 weeks, when she was born she had two knots in her umbilical cord, which shouldn't be survivable. She had a couple complications, but three years later my sister is completely healthy and very strong. And to think that the doctors wanted to kill her
That second sentence was completely unnecessary. You can't judge a country for its past. All countries including mine have embarrassing moments in history. We can't tag Germans as nazis, we can't tag Spain (where I live) with dictatorship and terrorism, and so on. And you can't say polish people are doing better than they did. Different times, different people. Congrats for today's job, Poles. Better think twice what you write, dude.
Putin can't even imagine the lengths the world will go to to undermine him.
Poland did a LOT for ukrainian immigrants when this started. The people at the train stations picking up refugees, the truckloads of supplies waiting for them too... they just were so ready and willing.
All the expressions of love, compassion, and generosity, towards the people of the Ukraine are enough to make your heart feel like it could burst.
My 9 yo Granddaughter, my Daughter-in-law's Mother, and her Sister were able to flee to Poland. It took them over 30 hours to make the journey to safety. At this time they are still in Poland while my Daughter-in-law's Father and Brother-in-law are in the midst of fighting in Kyiv. They were mandated to stay in the Ukraine. Poland has been absolutely wonderful at accepting the refugees. We are hoping to get my Granddaughter to America soon. My son and Daughter-in-law landed in America to buy a house the very day the war started.
Incredible! Congratulations grandpa! I'm sure that this is exactly what he wanted to happen, the reason he worked so hard all of his life, so that his granddaughter would have more, better opportunities than he did. I showed this to my great-aunt...she said "this is the true meaning of the American dream".
The video of this made the rounds a while back. Its super sweet to watch.
Tell me about it. When I first moved across the country to rejoin my husband, we could only bring two twin mattresses with us. My son slept on one, my husband on the other (He was working and needed to get decent sleep for his job.) So they slept on mattresses on the floor while I slept on an inflatable mattress. The day we bought new beds complete with frames and linens, I knew we had arrived at a good place.

Congratulations for being able to get yourself away from that situation! It is a hard thing to do and so many people can't do it or don't make it out for one reason or another so I love to see when people do.
Load More Replies...I can remember sleeping on the floor on an air mattress for months until I could buy a bed. Did it with my very first credit card I got from a major department store and got 30% discount for doing so. Paid off in 2 months. My first night in a bed after so long felt luxurious.
It certainly is! I never had new furniture until i was married! My bed was new, but beds weren't expensive in 1985! Was able to afford a full bed and 2 sets of sheets! All my stuff was second hand, given to me, by friends who's parents redid their beach condo and they gave me a couch and love seat , 3 tables to match them and lamps and a bunch of towels. I used those until i was married and then we used it fir at least 4 more years until we bought a house and got new furniture! We sill have the same bed and one night stand now in the spare bedroom. But the current bed we've had fir almost 19 years! Jist new matresses!
There's even a word for the act of obsessively reading bad news despite the onset of anxiety It's called doomscrolling and even thought it's quite new, research stretching back for decades has long warned that consuming too much negative news can take its toll.
Studies have linked poor mental health to news exposure during negative and traumatic events; the more news a person consumes during and after these events, the more likely they are to suffer from depression, stress and anxiety. For example, there's a study that surveyed 4,675 Americans in the weeks following the Boston Marathon bombings and collected data on how much media they consumed. Participants who engaged with more than six hours of media coverage per day were nine times more likely to also experience symptoms of high acute stress than those who only watched a minimal amount of news.
My autistic son and I used to play a hand squeezing game when he was little. I would squeeze his hand twice, he'd squeeze mine back twice. Three times, three times. The game would end when one of us would rapid fire squeeze the others hand so fast that it made it impossible to count and we'd both giggle. Whenever he's feeling down in the dumps now (he's 30) I take his hand and squeeze it...and the game is on!
I was thinking the same! Love like that keeps you youthful

Lack of education and exposure to people with disabilities. Growing up in Eastern Europe, the first time I've been exposed to disabled people living a full, independent life, was after I moved to the UK for my studies. He was diagnosed with HIV after being administered tainted haemophilia treatment, and his classmates' parents yanked their children from school when he returned to the classroom. Teachers also protested his return and the matter went to court. Even today, 32 years after his death, some people in that town still slander his name to their children and grandchildren.
It terrifies and deeply saddens me the while the President of Macedonia can take care of bullying in school in this way, we in the United States are once again, with our President, mourning the unacceptable and preventable loss of young children because our legislators are more tied up to their money from the gun lobby than they are interested in stopping this b******t.
2020 was exceptionally bad. "We've had so much news from COVID-19 and the economic breakdown to the reckoning with racial injustice combined with hurricanes and firestorms," said Roxane Cohen Silver, a research psychologist at the University of California, Irvine. "It's clear the stress of the election has added to all this."
"So much of it is open-ended and uncertain at the moment," Graham Davey, an emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom added. "That alone is something that people find extraordinarily stressful."

If only there were more 14 year olds doing this than getting hooked into a life of crime. Create bowties, not heartache and trauma.
Ah yes, I'm sure this kid has none of their basic needs met and an awful home life and still chose to make bow ties for shelter dogs. Come on. 14 year old kids whom choose a "life of crime" usually don't have many alternatives.

My sister did something similar with my son. Each time he hung out with her, she'd have him draw something in a journal...then she would have him tell her the story of what was going on in the picture and she would write it down. She gave it to me when we moved across the country. OMG! I loved it!

But there are things that people can do to protect their mental health from the potentially damaging effects of obsessively consuming news. "It's important to be informed but we don't want you to be doomscrolling," said Judith Andersen, a health psychologist at the University of Toronto in Canada.

The people abandoning him have lost out. Their loss is the gain of everyone going to that gas station. It used to be so commonplace here for workplaces to have working animals. Americans should take a lesson from this example. This is how to offer comfort to strangers in peril.
I'm willing to bet that there are THOUSANDS of American citizens who would offer the Ukrainians refuge if only they were given half a chance.
Load More Replies...I both love this and am a little scared by it. Maybe I'm just jaded. I assume 99.9% of people there have good intentions, but I'm scared of the .1% who don't. Refugees are often super vulnerable. I hope there's a system in place to check up on folks and prevent abuse.
Yeah German here. There were some creepy guys looking for Ukrainian women who came on their own, but police was aware and nothing bad happened.
Load More Replies...This is spectacular! Such special people willing to share their lives with people in need. I can't imagine the courage and bravery that these people from Ukraine must have to keep enduring throughout all the difficulties they've been faced with.
Was in Stuttgart, Germany at the train station where there are signs that say "Ukraine refugees - relief centre this way" and a few African immigrants were standing outside looking in. That was quite poignant.
The problem is that some horrible people will take advantage of this and abuse refugees, through various different forms. It is difficult to balance making sure that the family offering a home does not have a savage dog with a history of attacking children, a paedophile, a fraudster, a rapist, and so on, with trying to accommodate lots of truly desperate people in a short period of time.
After a few days, there were human traffikers among them :-/ Scum of human kind. Fortunately, the refugees were careful. At least, I haven't heard of any missing people.

It doesn't matter if they're biological or not, a good mama will take in any infants.
This is very typical of ducks. The "best" mom just sorta..nabs..the other ducklings and end up with a whole bunch.
We have experienced duckling hell with muscovies over a few years. Learnings: 1) if a mother is being followed, she thinks all is well. Even if she started walking with 14 and now only has two. So you have to go find the other 12. 2) they will adopt babies the same age because they can't tell the difference, but attack bigger or smaller ones. 3) Muscovies are WAY dumber than chickens.
Also, a bucket is excellent for collecting ducklings. You can pour them gently out like liquid. There is nothing more cute and fuzzy than having your hand in a bucket of ducklings.
Load More Replies...My family used to do this type of thing. I lived in a house with a canal in the backyard when I was younger. We'd have the same families of ducks that would come back each year to nest in our yard. Occasionally, we would find orphaned or stray ducklings. We'd take them in and care for them until we found a mama duck with similar aged babies and then let the one swim off with its new family. It worked most of the time where the mama would just adopt it as if it were her own. Very satisfying and fun thing to do as a kid.
She always knew she wanted a big brood with all the love, guidance and protection she has to share!
She was good mama once had a mama cat that did this the kitten died and she was so heartbroken. She treated it like her own baby
You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Kindness goes a long way and it costs nothing.
When I had covid in January, I ordered dashmart from doordash to get ice cream delivered since my throat hurt. In the notes, I said to please just leave on doorstep since I had covid. When I later retrieved the order, there was a note in the bag with the ice cream that read, "Ice cream solves everything. Feel better!"
Kindness and consideration for others is always the way to go! Very nice😊
Once a lady came into my bar trying not to cry, ordered fries and a tea and sat for a while watching her son play hockey (it was a bar in a hockey arena so lots of parents). I paid for her $8 bill and pretended that “I’m allowed to give away one free meal a day and you looked like you needed it!” I ran away so fast after that. She left me a cute note saying thank you. I’ve never told anyone (except BP now!) but it made me feel so good that I “pretended” a few more times after that :)
Poor doggy but also happy doggy was rescued :) the warm bed they gave him after that ice probably felt so good!

Aren’t we all fed up of fireworks by now? It’s colours and bangs in the sky.
This is the number one reason why I highly recommend desensitization training for dogs and cats.. heck any pet really. You start with fireworks on youtube playing very quietly and give top shelf/ bestest treats as they are able to relax and be calm with the sound. As they progress you can up the volume until such time as they look to you for num-nums when they hear fireworks. I have seen this training work for fire works, gun fire, loud vehicles etc.. you just have to start off with it low enough to not startle and build on that. My present service dog enjoys watching firework displays and gives zero issues with any other loud noise. It works best if you start young, but pretty much any doggo can be helped. just go slow.
Or, maybe fireworks manufacturers could create them without the terrifying loud bangs that scare the c**p out of creatures and people?

Several months ago someone in my town lost their dog, and people kept spotting him around but could never catch him. NYE a couple was trying to catch him; they were in a parking lot. Fireworks started and good boi jumped right in the car. Probably the only time fireworks worked well for a dog.
While this is an awesome little story, I have seen it on BP probably over 10 times now lol
Correct, some stories on BP are repeats, but everyone who comes here has a "first time" as you did, plus sometimes I like to be reminded how great some people can be.

I taught Middle School kids (ages 12-14) for 30+ years and we always had a rule - if I or another student in the class said something hurtful to you, whether accidentally or not, you were to simply say, "Ouch". That way we'd know and address and fix the problem. It was really effective.
I hope the school helps pay for this, but realistically, I bet the funding comes out of the teacher's pocket. If you happen to serve on a school PTA or student council, this would be a great thing for you to set up and fund!
My son's school had a pantry that had food and hygiene items that kids could go into the office and get without others knowing and it was donation based. Every year that he went there, during my work's Christmas party I would have a raffle with prizes that I had purchased on sale over the year and to participate people had to donate items and/or money to purchase items and we would collect several car loads. Hopefully, they have donations or something similar as well...
Load More Replies...I like this! A small Casino I used to go to offered free feminine products to people that didn't have them. They told me that women would randomly bring in products for use. I got a friend that worked at a KFC to bring me some of the towelettes they offer. Put them in the basket in the ladies room so women could use them in the stalls when necessary.
Schools in our area of Ohio, USA have family care teams. They take care of kids and families that need help or emergencies. They take donations of absolutely everything. Even stained work clothes. The kids going into auto tech that only have one pair of nice pants are thrilled with having clothes they don’t have to worry about ruining. House fire? Covered. Wet clothes and shoes from walking to school, covered.
This is so awesome! It's fantastic to have for kids who need it. Every school should have a place for students who need these products to get them, no questions asked. People could donate them. It's a nice thought

My dad had an accident and sustained a catastrophic brain injury when I was 18. He lived, but my “dad” was gone forever. I thought he’d be around forever, to walk me down the aisle, to see me graduate college… what I wouldn’t give for just one more minute to talk with him. He died last year after 21 years of being bedridden, in diapers, with a feeding tube, and catastrophically brain-damaged. But nor would I trade a single second of those 21 years, either. IDK, I miss my dad :(

Anyone else feel kinda sad that these people are being heralded because other people wouldn't have given that woman *basic human compassion* and that the 'normal response' would have been to just... abandon her in the middle of a winter storm? Like I know strangers are scary but seriously, how could you NOT let someone spend the night in your home when they are literally snowed in at your home?!?
i lost my father to stage 4 prostate cancer 6 years ago. i couldn't do s**t for him. didn't even try and talk about whatever he wanted to say. i was suffering from mental health issues that kept me in bed 16 hours a day, and in the hours (of the night) when i was awake, i would work to pay off the medical bills. he wasn't a big talker and i was never a good child. i wonder how many stories, and memories he took away with him forever without telling me. once I'm gone, no one will remember him at all.
sorry for the rant. this post just made me think of all the things that he could have done if i were a little more present or open (emotionally) towards him.
Load More Replies...It's an easy sign to get wrong. Unless you actually know what you're signing in ASL, it's really easy to accidentally sign "Happy Day Your Mom Birthed You Out." (Not literally, but pretty close. The sign for "birth" means labor and is very different than "birthday.")
I live about 5 miles from this school. Believe me, it's rare for "feel-good" stories like this one to come out of my state's schools. I'm glad to know there are still a few good teachers around here.
There was a group of people standing in a circle in a parking lot once, all facing out. Turned out there was a lady on the ground who had a seizure and they were surrounding her to make sure no one messed with her until the ambulance got there. Some was kneeling beside her with their hand behind her head so, if she seized again, she wouldn't hit her head on the pavement. Restores my faith in humanity when stuff like this happens. They were standing facing away from her because they didn't want her to wake up and be embarrassed at seeing a bunch of strangers standing around her staring.
stark contrast to an incident my mom experienced, where she was in a bagel shop and another woman in line started seizing, and my mom and the woman's caretaker were the only ones who moved forward to help - everyone else backed away. bystander syndrome is partially at fault, but there also just isn't enough information out there in a lot of places.

I have autism and lemme do you an educate! He’s probably stimming, a calming repetitive memorized motion that helps dull the sharp sensations from the outside world. Memorizing fonts is a REALLY COOL one!
Maybe it's just me, my personal preference, but I would not like to be called "child with autism" particularly in reference to a talent or difficulty I have.
Meanwhile I'm also autistic and my handwriting is so terrible it's barely legible. One guy said I had the handwriting of a doctor! XD
Someone also on the spectrum- my handwriting is never the same, day to day. I hate it and when I look back at notes and stuff the inconsistency frustrates me, but it all depends on if my hands decide to cooperate that given day because sometimes they just don’t

It didn’t stay this way though. Through social media, people who saw the original post turned up in their hundreds and he sold out repeatedly day after day. He now has a solid clientele and repeat customers due to his great donuts 🍩
He's currently got a 5 star rating with over 1,400 reviews. Must be good!
This only shows the first image in the Instagram story. Happily the story goes on to say that people saw the social media post, and dad sold out of doughnuts and kolaches! :D
This is a incomplete story. IIRC, the mother was ill and he was running the store alone, but wasn't having any luck selling his doughnuts. His daughter posted online about him being sad that no one was coming there to buy them, and his luck changed for the better. When everyone read his story, he began selling out of all of his doughnuts by about 10:30 am and could close up early everyday and go home to be with his wife.
That was a different story. This was a son posting about his dad, and it was just a family shop that wasn't doing so hot until his son posted and he got plenty of visitors after that. One was in Seal Beach and this one was somewhere near Houston.
