I highly recommend to keep the desktop as clean as possible, especially do not keep there folders with lots of data (like pictures or movies). It slows the computer. And it really slows down startup.

Create a smaller number of folders on the desktop, and put related shortcuts inside the (properly labeled) folders. You're welcome.

I have a folder called Misc because I can't spell miscellaneous. It covers a multitude of sins!

My wife's is bigger than the screen, so a lot of it you just have to open explorer for. I keep offering to at least organize it into folders, but she doesn't want me to touch it.. my desktop has 6 icons and they are all things I need to deal with. My inbox is the same!

It's not just unsightly, it degrades your system performance. Shortcuts, aren't "as" bad, but actual files, and worse yet, folders that live on the desktop filled with files, all that stuff gets loaded into system memory, every time you move the mouse cursor, let alone open anything else, your system has to scan through everything on the desktop. It took me years to break my wife of this habit. Only short cuts, and if you truly can't help but have an obscene amount, group them into folders located anywhere but the desktop and put a shortcut to that folder on your desktop. It''s a marginal performance cost if you're upgrading your system every single year, but if your system is a couple years old or more? It's going to make it feel soooo much slower.

What you could do to free up space (although it can be a bit disorienting, I should know), is making your screen resolution bigger, on my computer in will make the icons smaller as well.

most likely that small patch was built before they put the highway there, once there were people there was need for a highway, once the highway was built, they lined up the rest of the streets with it.

To stop people driving through -- only locals will use these. Of course that just makes the next roads busier.

A new town built around an old town. There are likely far more examples of this in existence than some would like. Downtown Tulsa is like this, even to the degree that some of the roads are still of the width that was common back when the old town portion was first built. Not only is it a pain in the a*s to go from a north/south grid to a northwest/southeast grid but it can be unnerving to change from a relatively wide road to one significantly more narrow.

I'm going to take a guess that the off-kilter square was there before the highway was.

Honestly, this happens when I don't want to build even more grids, realize I do need space efficiency and get back to boring but efficient grids halfway through.
