It is astonishing how fast random opinions on the internet can ruin a person’s outlook on a given product of media entertainment.

But sometimes you don’t need some rando’s thoughts because the show beats them to it by imploding on itself through bad script writing, presentation, acting, or any combination of those three and more.

This inevitably leads to Reddit threads like this one, where folks list TV shows and series that started off very well, becoming instant hits, and then getting progressively worse for a multitude of reasons.

Scroll down to check out the best responses and answers to the now-viral Reddit thread, having over 30,000 upvotes, and why not perform all of the necessary formalities like upvote and comment and then upvote and comment some more.

Oh, and beware, spoilers!

Person Asks “What TV Show Was Amazing At First But Became Unwatchable For You Later On?”, And 30 Folks Deliver First few seasons were great with pretty good pacing. Later seasons devolve into telling one story at a time. They’d have a cliffhanger of a character maybe dying and do 3 weeks of other stories. By the time it gets back to the cliffhanger you have no idea what’s happening. That and it got repetitive.

I always find this equally funny, depressing and annoying. GRR martin gave the show runners a roadmap for how the book series was going to end up. This was it. So many people are upset over the fact that the "mother of dragons" who somehow became a feminist icon, despite the many, constant hints over the fact that like the rest of her family, was INSANE. Her ending was obvious. From the point where her brother was given the golden crown and she basically shrugged. The last seasons had their flaws, but people are just pissed that they invested so much into the dragon queen without really paying attention to the very loud subtext

One thing I appreciate about the last season is that Jensen Ackles (Dean) and Misha Collins were clearly playing it like they were in love; Misha said afterwards that the scene where he confesses his love for Dean and then dies was the most the network would let them do. And he really brought his a-game for that scene.

I LOVED Supernatural. Gets off to a slow start and then just takes off. Last few seasons got a bit repetitive but I watched it until the very end . It has a great payoff, IMHO. A major character says, right from the start, "I know how my story ends .." and 15 years later, that is exactly what happens . COVID kept the finale from having the truly epic finale it had planned but it still worked. I will always love this show.

I loved it. It breaks my heart that they kept it running for so long. There were soooo many places they could have ended it and just elegantly slipped out and let go of the story. But they had to drag the poor dead horse allllll over and ... Nope. I liked the first 5 seasons and I liked quite a few after that, too. I wanted to murder Castiel on a weekly basis after s6 or 7 and when they got to the Antichrist, I just quit. But unlike with many other shows, I'm still mourning the death of some secondary characters. Charlie. Ellen, Bobby, even Jo. They created great characters and then all killed them, but the one they should have murdered stayed?? Still pissed. That said - it was a big part of my life and I met one of my best friends just through that show. Can't ever be mad at it.

I loved the angle of Dean's resurrection - but they had to top it off with Sam being resurrected, too, and then having spent even longer in Hell and having it worse. No trauma is the same, obviously, but that just soured it for me. Why not go with the "severely traumatized and not dealing with it at all in a healthy way"-Dean and a "caring but not quite knowing what to do because your brother is a stubborn donkey"-Sam? And then go one or two more seasons and just let it go? *sigh* that said - I liked the Leviathans. That bib? Hilarious!

I've always wanted to watch this show because it just seems like it's right up my alley. I loved Buffy and I like shows that build and have a rich backstory. It also has a good number of seasons and eps to marathon. I'm not sure if I can explain this right, but I feel like a fandom elder; I've watched shows like this for so long I can go ahead and skip the first few seasons and get to the good part. Like if I were to start watching Buffy from episode 1 right now, I'd never get to episode 2. But I love the show overall and I'm so glad I got into it because it was great but it needed time to get there and back then I had the patience but now... I just want to skip through. Netflix and shorter seasons have spoiled me.

Somehow I managed 8 seasons. The stuff with ending every season with one of the main characters dead/possessed/in hell/in purgatory or whatever does not work with only TWO main characters! You KNOW that it will take 3 episodes at most for them to be back to their old selves. Also, they killed Bobby and Ellen off, some of the best characters. And no, bringing Bobby back as a ghost or whatever does not count.

I had to stop watching it because my hate for Dean developed to a level where everytime he spoke, I wanted to throw my laptop out of the window. Total selfish pr1ck and a s3xist gaslighter, one of the worst show protagonists ever.

I actually think that Glee was like a fun guilty pleasure show when it first came out.

Then after like 4-6 episodes there was a writers' strike and when it finally came back it just got worse and worse until it was unwatchable.

cdenton041793 replied:
The first couple seasons were really campy and fun, and I loved that. But eventually it felt like they got to a place where they were taking themselves way too seriously, and it just wasn't working anymore. I have not watched the last season, I got like halfway through the first episode and noped out. The season or 2 before that wasn't very good either, but I really tried, because I had loved it for so long.

PS, I know.

Breaking Bad. It was great for the first several full rewatches, unwatchable after I lost my phone and my computer and TV broke.

SassySSS replied:
Hahaha you got me. I was fully ready to be like WHAT Breaking bad is the antithesis of a show that goes off the rails. Just so happen to be deep into a rewatch now after several years and I literally can’t stop saying how more shows need to be like this, the story is so tight and focused. No sprawling casts of new characters or Flanderization of existing characters. The storytelling is so well done, just remarkable television.

The Office limped to the finish line.

The_Sound_of_Slants replied:
It was not unwatchable for me, but you can definitely tell the writers lost their direction after Steve left. Characters started acting... well... out of character. The new characters were pretty weird. Story lines were getting stretched thin.

I am glad they did not straight up cancel the show after Steve left. I would have been mad if I did not see how some of the characters' lives progressed.

But watching the last few seasons you can definitely tell they knew the show could not go on without Steve. They were just using the time to figure out how to wrap it all up nicely. And maybe throw a few cameos along the way.

Dwight’s shoulders were massively stronger after carrying that show the last two seasons

Doctor Who is getting to be that way. And I know, there's all the hate for the Chibnall era on Doctor Who, and some of that's valid--but that's not what I'm getting at. It's just not much fun anymore. When it starts feeling like a chore to watch it, it's probably time to let it go. And I have to say, this bothers me...Doctor Who was a huge part of my childhood and really my whole life, ever since the mid-80s. It sucks to have it feel this way now.

We were huge fans up until Capaldi and interest just waned. I've never seen the newer Dr. Too bad really

Person Asks “What TV Show Was Amazing At First But Became Unwatchable For You Later On?”, And 30 Folks Deliver It was really cool. Then later on... Jesus Christ, the protagonist is a Mary Sue, everyone always listens to her, you can always guarantee none of her friends will die and you can always feel like the trouble she gets herself and her friends into aren't threatening. What a waste

For some reason people think I'm talking about the sitcom. Why? I'm talking about the god awful Netflix adaption. The first season was insanely fun. Everything after just felt like the most below bare minimum awful writing I have ever seen in any show.

Person Asks “What TV Show Was Amazing At First But Became Unwatchable For You Later On?”, And 30 Folks Deliver Was a fun watch at the start, but it just devolved into fake, staged tripe. Not sure it was ever real tbf, but at least at the start it was somewhat believable.

Person Asks “What TV Show Was Amazing At First But Became Unwatchable For You Later On?”, And 30 Folks Deliver I hope this isn't too unpopular, but the last 2 seasons of Arrested Development were absolutely painful to sit through. The story just got unnecessarily convoluted and was just boring.
