Imagine a world where wearing a bikini is considered taboo, where you can’t legally marry someone of a different race, or having divorced parents is more than enough reason for other kids to bully you to no end. Sounds ridiculous, right? But believe it or not, there are certain things that we do today that were once considered wrong and are now (almost) completely normalized behaviors.
You know what they say: “Normal is just a setting on the dryer.” And it’s true. Normal is a relative term, and societal standards can change depending on who you’re with and what part of the world you were born and raised in.
But have you ever stopped to think about what things today may be deemed as “wrong” by most people, yet we do or accept them without a second thought? From plastering our kids’ lives on social media to websites selling personal information, the line between what we regard as right and wrong can be a bit blurry.
We recently stumbled upon an AskReddit thread where people stated their opinions on which unacceptable behaviors have become normalized, to the point we generally don’t see them as a huge problem anymore. While some responses may seem like a bit of a stretch, others are quite serious and deserve a closer look. We spent a long time reading these interesting submissions and examining current societal norms people pointed out, so here’s a list of things that are wrong but widely accepted — at least according to the Internet community.

I think it depends on the people - hear me out on this! While I think in general it’s rude, it’s not always what you think it is. My hubs and I are frequently on our phones or iPads when we eat together. BUT, we’re not actually missing out on anything. Not only are we married, so live together, we also wfh for the same company. We’re together all day long, and talk throughout the day. Added to that, we’re both pretty quiet people. For us we’re still spending quality time together even while on our devices. And honestly, we do the same out to eat. Half the time we can barely have a conversation because the restaurant is too noisy.

When I was 26, an older lady I knew through work asked me my age and if I have kids (It was a casual conversation and the subject came up, she wasn't intentionally trying to be nosy). I told her and said I don't have kids. She started freaking out, like she was scared for me and said that I had better hurry up and have kids soon! She was overall a really cool person, but that left a bad taste in my mouth. After that, I didn't have the heart to tell her I don't want kids.

In the EU there's the GRDP (General Data Protection Regulation). For example companies cannot just make it super difficult to opt out of cookies so that people have to accept. Google, TikTok and others have been fined hefty fees for not complying.

Also, the stigma behind it. We all have very different stories, very different lives and we're all very different people. We don't know their respective stories and people need to stop judging them. They're not a blight, they're human beings struggling just to stay alive and people looking down on them for going through a rough time for ANY reason are definitely part of the problem.

Celebrities are absolutely entitled to their privacy. Yes, they did make to the choice to be in the public eye, but that doesn't mean it's okay to constantly invade their space and spread nasty rumors about them just because one of thousands of unsolicited pictures of them is a little unseemly. They're people, too. The paparazzi are NOT good people. Just look at how Britney Spears was treated. She never deserved that and it's no wonder she had a mental break at one point.

"Tying your health insurance to your work (USA). If you become too sick to work (example: terminal cancer) you lose your job and your health care coverage. Dental not being included in health care. How is the health of your mouth and teeth separate from the health of the rest of your body and necessitate totally different (and pricey) insurance? Hearing aids are not covered by my health insurance. The testing to determine that you need them is covered but the actual devices are not. I guess all those people faking hearing loss to wear cool hearing aids have forced the insurance companies to fight back /s."

It's a topic that often comes up on BP. It's hard for me to understand that anyone would prefer this system, but many do. Maybe based on misunderstandings. Same situation with vacation where you have no right to paid vacation in the US, it's something you negotiate, and the average is 2 weeks per year. In the EU you must have at least 5 weeks.

I have insomnia as well and it's not going to go away, probably ever (it's related to my fibromyalgia.) I used to be on a message board where one woman b1tched constantly about how tired she was after the birth of her first child, and then proceeded to have two more children and complained about lack of sleep at least every other day for about 8 years. I have given this a lot of thought and I do want my doctors well rested, but maybe an exhausted student learns they don't always know, they are only human, they must ask for help, know when to make decisions and when to allow others with more rest or experiences. There has to be some logic to why new doctors get their asses kicked.

I like how they blame it on the consumer, as if we all got together and voted for noodles to be supplied in plastic bags. Or or like when we switced from glass soda bottles to plastic and it became a noticeable problem but instead of blaming the supplier (the ones that actually made the decision based on financial stats) the consumer got blamed. That level of manipulation right there is the reason why nothing goes anywhere. That and the shameful absence of initiative to do any research so you don’t end up as the rat in the maze.

"Maybe this is just a "me" thing, but as someone who is adopted I am really bothered by adoptive parents who lie to their kids. I think starting your relationship with your child based on a lie is completely wrong, and it will come back to bite you later. Unfortunately some parents who cannot biologically have children will choose to supplement this by adopting a kid and telling that kid they gave birth to them. This needlessly stigmatizes adoption by making it a shameful secret while also making sure that if this child finds out later in life, they will resent their parents 100% and never trust them again. It's just awful. My parents were completely transparent with me from a really young age and I grew up well. I love my parents and personally have no desire to ever meet my biological mother. Every adopted kid is different but they all deserve to be told the truth."

I'm adopted, and I found out when I was 7 years old. Not because my parents TOLD me, but because I was snooping around (as kids do) and I found some photos of my biological mother. I'm not sure WHEN my parents would have told me, if I hadn't found out. My mom's pretty atrociously narcissistic, so I wouldn't put it past her to decide to never tell me.

And in the US, high fructose corn syrup added to every freaking thing! Real annoying looking for stuff that doesn't have that c**p in it. Also, the use of Splenda (sucralose) in things and not being properly labeled. I'm allergic to it and I can avoid most of the foods easily but over the counter medication gets frustrating; i'm constantly reading labels and it's really annoying.

Drinking culture is rediculous. I don't drink, fortunately my partner and friends don't either. But when I got over the whole binge drinking thing at the age of 21 people call you boring, wonder what's wrong with you ect, it's rediculous. Very true. Only addicts 'need' a drink. If you drink occasionally because you want to, that's fine, but if you start avoiding things if you can't have alcohol because you feel you need that drink to endure whatever it is, then you're an addict in the first stages of the addiction. Alcohol is a drug. Fullstop. It's not medication, it's not an aid. It's no more needed in your everyday life than a bonbon or a cupcake, and it's much more dangerous than sweets.

So no surprise that the use of antidepressant has gone up all over the world, which is still a much better solution than drinking and using drugs which are usually a way to escape reality. That's not a thing where I live. Children are told to stay home if they are sick or if they need a mental health day. The only thing is if they are constantly absent, in which case the welfare coordinator/teacher tries to find out why and get them support. Also, you have to have at least 90% attendance in year 11 & 12 in my state, as a lot of your school qualification is based on work done in school. You can get special consideration if needed though.

I can't recall the country that does this (Norway, maybe??), but I've read that in some places traffic fines are based on the person's income. For example, if two people get the same speeding ticket, the rich one might have to pay $50K, compared to the regular person that only has to pay $50. This proportional method should be used for ALL fines and penalties.

Being "overweight" is not inherently bad. Being obese is. You cannot be obese and "perfectly healthy" at the same time. It doesn't matter if you can wave around "perfect bloodwork" or a note from your doctor that says you don't have diabetes. "Obesity" is literally a negative medical condition unto itself. It is defined as "a disorder involving excessive body fat that increases the risk of health problems." You quite simply cannot be "obese" and "healthy" at the same time, as obesity is not a human body's natural state of being.

This scares me. It's easier to find larger sizes in shops than smaller sizes nowadays. All my clothes are at least a size too big for me coz I literally can't find anything small enough that will fit. I quite often end up buying kids sizes. I just had the flu. High fever, a cough, snot, dizziness, the whole works. When it was almost healed, I got tonsillitis on top. First came the virus, then the bacterial infection. I was sick for five weeks. I still have a job, and everyone is just happy that I'm back. That's how it should be

Here's one for the speakerphone: the reason I end up doing that sometimes is that I'm using hearing aids, ones that don't play well with a mobile phone. To give me - and the person who has called me - the best chance to hear what's being said, speakerphone it is.

My oldest girl is 5 years old. I usually buy her boy shorts because I am not comfortable with how short girl shorts are. Even at that age. Rarely, though, I find some girl shorts that go to the mid-thigh. So they do exist! I also would never ever buy my kids bikinis until they are at least 14 years old. I am not comfortable with it.

Why is there no legal requirement in the US for employers to include paid sick leave in employment contracts? If that was the the case in pretty much anywhere else in the developed world, some companies/industries/employers would be out of business. The same goes for paid maternity leave, paid bereavement leave and a set number of paid weeks for holidays? Here in NZ we even have a government department that pays us 80% of wages/salary if we have an accident, irrespective of where or how said accident occurred, if we can't work!

No, dude, you have a MUTT. I love mutts. All but one of my dogs have been mutts. My current puppy is a mutt ("Oh, I have a German Central Asian Ovcharkshepherd!"). Just accept that your "designer dog" is a mixed breed and not something super-fancy just because you can cram two words together and get "Chiweenie" or "Pomsky".

I’ve done 4 and 3 work days, with a 36 hour schedule (technically 40 hours with each day having a paid 1 hour lunch). I’ve also done the standard 5 and 2. I actually don’t mind either schedule, and I like that my current job swaps between the two based on time of year. We’re on the 4/3 when it’s the summer months, which gives more time for projects and outdoor time. I don’t like 4/3 as much when working on big projects, as it’s frequently a pain when planning timelines - but I doubt that’s true for all industries.

So, I used to work for a company that produces these things - including email marketing. They do them because it actually brings business in. Just because you don’t respond to that mailer, doesn’t mean others don’t. A car dealership (one of the most frequent mailers) will pay for mailers to be sent out to thousands of people within say 30-50 miles of their location. If that mailer results in 20 cars sold, and maybe 20+ new customers to their service center, it’s money well spent on the advertising.

I’m more ticked about some (US) companies not qualifying you for benefits (insurance and in some cases vacation) because the employee’s record lists them as a part time employ, yet their record shows they have been working the 32+ hours weekly to qualify. My first job, I lost out on paid vacation time for 2 years because of that little checkbox in my employee record.

OT is frequently mandatory in the IT world. It’s not uncommon to be on-call 24/7 ( and called frequently) if you're the subjected matter expert within a company. Or to end up working a 14 hour day because you were expected to work your normal hours, plus extra hours overnight to a an off-hours upgrade to a system, complete with testing and fixing - god forbid if anything goes wrong, as you might be up the whole night in emergency mode.

I always keep my phone out of reach or deep in my pocket when I'm driving. If ppl call me while I'm driving they will reach my answering machine and I may get back to them when I am no longer driving. I am otherwise looking at my phone almost all the time. But not when I'm driving. Ever.

In my house we almost never let the kids watch stuff on a tablet or a phone. We stream it on the tv. This was we are all able to watch along. And we can talk about what happens or sing along to songs. I think it happens just a few times per year that my kids watch somethin on my phone. Their granddad on the other hand.... he lets them watch whatever. He's good at setting boundaries on other things... but not the phones and tablets for some reason.
