Now with only a few clicks of a button, we can get everything we need or want. This has led to a serious discussion of what consumerism brings us and how we should change our shopping habits. And this is not the only reason why people sometimes need to think twice before confirming that purchase. Together with this goes untrustworthy brands, low-quality items, and influential hype of purchasing unnecessary things.

Reddit user @u/Badass_Band1t asked people online “What should people seriously stop buying?” and received almost 40k upvotes together with 27.5 comments where other users shared their opinions about things that, for various reasons, should not be purchased in the future.

Most of the answers showed that people are very much concerned about plastic use. A lot of comments suggested that we can all live without buying single-use plastic products when there are so many alternatives that are friendly to the environment. Plastic water bottles and cutlery were among the things that pollute surroundings the most and can be easily replaced with reusable items.

I guess that spreading awareness about MLM (multi-level marketing) scams stuck in people’s minds as these companies and their products were also mentioned by users of Reddit. It was stressed in some of the comments that any kind of unnecessary things that provide you with temporary happiness are not worth buying as they only take up space but usually have no value.

What do you think people should also stop buying? Leave your thoughts in the comments down below!

Foi gras should also be banned as the ducks are artificially fattened by having tubes shoved down their throats to pump their stomachs full of far more food than they would ever want to eat. This process, also known as “gavage”, is repeated multiple times a day. The force feeding causes the birds’ livers to swell up to ten times their natural size to make the foi gras

This is actually bullshit. MANY dogs at shelters ARE puppy mills dogs. Go to a reputable breeder that tests their dogs for all kind of illnesses before they breed and also take very good care of them. That is were you should put your money, starve out those puppy mills so they arent profitable anymore.

I went to the local dog shelter looking for a dog, they had one that they called aggressive and uncontrollable. He came and sat by me looking at me without a sound. The staff were shocked, so I adopted him. Not 100% sure how old he was when I adopted him but I had him for over a decade. Rescue dog just need a loving home. Some of them are wonderful animals that just need to find the right person.

That's a lovely story, but it's important to note that this is not the norm. A lot of shelter dogs are adopted by people who like how they look and disregard warnings from staff about their difficulties (and a lot of rescues are traumatised and DO have issues). Those dogs often end up back at the shelter when the new owners just can't deal with them.

When I was a kid we bought the family dog from the pet store. We didn't know any better at the time, but we soon learned. Poor thing was afraid of men, boots, brooms, rakes, vacuum cleaners, and that's just what I remember. I can only imagine what he must've gone through as a pup.

Vacuums tend to have a specific level of sound that is physically painful to them. The rest sound like the "owner" put a litter of pups in a garage until old enough to sell and each time they went in they grabbed the nearest long handled tool to swat them out of the way (because they're so happy to see them (read: hungry) they swarm). You see this a lot in animal rescue work. 🥺😿

We live on a dead end street—-prime dumping ground for unwanted animals. Many do get picked up and go to the animal shelter—-thankfully the county shelter is no-kill, and there are a lot of groups that trap stray cats, get them fixed, and return the truly feral ones to their colony or get the ones who were obviously dumped pets, or have more docile personalities, adopted. Right now, we have 4 cats and 1 dog—-every single one rescued off the street—-3 of the cats dumped in our yard, all by themselves, as small kittens (one was especially tiny; 5-6 weeks old and barely weighing 1 lb! What kind of monster dumps a tiny baby like that all by herself in a strange place?).

If you are contacting somebody who is offering an animal for sale and that person tells you that they need to meet you at McDonald’s because their place is very hard to find, that’s a big red flag that you’re dealing with backyard breeders - puppy mill breeders, because they don’t want you on the property seeing how horrible the conditions are!!

We picked up a puppy mill puppy at a rescue. All of my animals are ones I picked up off the street or found at a shelter except for one. Had a yorkie that I loved more than anything, when he died we recused another dog but 2 years later I was still in a deep depression over my yorkie, I loved him more than anything. I ended up buying a yorkie from a local breeder. I love all my animals, but I think ever since rescuing my first yorkie I can never go back to not having one. Not that I would ever get one from a puppy mill. If you do buy, make sure you check out the breeder.

In general the term 'influencer' refers to people who make their money solely from Instagram or the like, I think. They're likely more desperate than a footballer, so they're likely to shill any rubbish that's offered to them.

The schools demand that you purchase the newest edition for full price, and not one letter has changed from the old edition. Books are hundreds of dollars and you can bring them back for re-sale and they offer you $3. Authors and publishers should be paid for their work but this is a money grab and shouldn't be tolerated. Just taking advantage of students that have no alternative but to have the basic materials they need to complete a class.

Being able to just go grab something you want, is easy mode, that is if shopping was a game. If it was a game where you had to find a couch, a dish set and lamps, the hard level would require your ingenuity. You'd have adventures helping old ladies down size, visiting every thrift store and haunting online auctions and marketplaces. If you choose to live in hard mode, your home will become a collection of objects each with a story. Benefits: Pocketbook is heavier, landfill is emptier, environment is cleaner and you have some awesome stories to tell.

Definitely do research when considering a wild bird - so many are stolen from their nests as babies then trafficked out their countries in awful conditions (stuffed into luggage where half suffocate) before ending up in pet shops. People need to think about where these birds come from and where they SHOULD BE.

Animals are an investment...just like a house a care or a child. They need care and attention. If you can't handle that responsibility...there are some really nice stuffed toy options. I've always wanted a dog but I know I can't support that decision financially at the moment...so I made friends with my neighbor's dog and I play with him everyday.

Especially exotic pets. Bearded dragons need a 100+ gallon tank. Exotic vets aren't cheap either (and they are usually necessary at least once). Not to mention the amount of behind the scenes work that comes with pets (especially exotic ones).

I agree, do not take on the responsibility if you can't afford it or don't have much stability. However, I have also seen responsible pet families that had a drastic change of situation after many years. And ppl will still give them a hard time when trying to re-home a beloved family pet member. Those ppl may have run out of options by that time. We don't always know their full story. In the end, I think they are being responsible by trying to re-home and give their pet a better life to someone who's situation is better. (I know this is not everyone, but I've seen it happen to good ppl.)

This one makes my blood boil. If this animal isn't your top priority then move on. You are their entire world. Do NOT abdomen them because you "had to move" or some other nonsense. BS! then take them with you or don't move. You'd have to physically hurt me to get my dog. She is mine and I promised to give her a good life and will keep it.

Yes. If you learn, after adopting a pet, that you can’t take care of it, if it is sick or injured or disabled, take it to professionals. If it’s going to outlive you, give it to a friend or family member. Dumping other animals on the streets is not the proper way to fix a problem that’s so easy to fix.

My Grandparents adopted a cat (from a litter my cat had). They knew their cat may outlive them so they stated in their will that if he outlived them he would go to a specific cousin of mine. After my Grandparents passed the kitty went on to live an additional 5 years with my cousin until he passed at 18 years old. He was just as pampered & loved as he was with our Grandparents; The Emperor (not his real name but the nickname my Grandmother gave to him. My point if you think your beloved pet may outlive you make arrangements ahead of time to make sure they will be loved and taken care of for their life. 🙂

I think in the past 15 years since I got my first cellphone, I’ve only upgraded 4 times. Basically every 3-4 years. I can’t see spending money to replace something every year when it’s still working just fine. Besides, any upgrades the new models have are mostly pretty subtle, so it’s not like you’re really getting that much more. Just bragging rights—-and expensive ones.

There is a planned obsolescence aspect to this. As you know, a rechargeable battery only lasts for so many cycles and will eventually die. When this happened in the past, we could just buy a new battery and pop it in, just like new. These days, most phones are sealed units and you can't access the battery so when that goes, the phone goes, unfortunately. It's an obvious and cynical move by the manufacturers.

I have a theory. Our skeletons are actually made of glitter(at least the core) and glitter slowly rises up to the surface of our skin. Like cells but glitter. And ,like cells, they shed however then another glitter cell floats up somewhere totally unexpected. Now the reason scientists don't tell us this is because they don't want people killing for glitter.

    Stacy Parker

4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Palm oil is grown as an industrial plantation crop, often (especially in Indonesia) on newly cleared rainforest or peat-swamp forests rather than on already degraded land or disused agricultural land. Since then, cultivation of palm oil has been the direct cause to a host of devastating effects on endangered wildlife species, specifically the Asian elephants. For instance when the destruction of feeding grounds and shrinking habitats forces elephants into close quarters with human settlements, they raid fruit orchards and palm-oil plantations in their quest for food, which leaves them vulnerable to retaliatory killings by farmers and villagers.

When you buy a product that promotes itself as 'palm oil free' the palm oil has been replaced by another oil. No oil plants is as productive as oil palms, to get the same amount of oil from a different plant you need more ground. All that will happen is that more of nature will be devastated to provide the acceptable alternatives. Instead we need to focus on the move to sustainable palm oil. And to use the perfectly good fats that are produced when animals are slaughtered for meat. Lard and dripping/tallow that exists anyway is perfectly good enough for many things that palm oil is used for.

NO, NO, NO, NO this is very very wrong, this should not be on this list!!! The problem is not the palm oil, but the way it is farmed. Do not favour products because they say palm oil free, favour products that say RSPO. Palm oil is one of the highest yield oils that is why it is used so much, if you refuse to use palm oil then an alternative must be found, that is going to be lower yield, so the farming of the alternative is going to even more environmental damage, because it needs more farmland than palm oil. Supporting RSPO instead of palm oil free means that the oil has been farmed sustainably and not an even more unsustainable alternative. TLDR, palm oil not bad, unsustainable farming bad, alternative oils even more unsustainable.

Actually, please educate yourself about this. Sustainable palm oil is an alternative income to people who live in low income countries with a tropical climate, such as Indonesia. It allows them to make use of the land they have without resorting to deforestation and it can be done with a minimal environmental impact.

Palm oil has been and continues to be a major driver of deforestation of some of the world’s most biodiverse forests, destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino. This forest loss coupled with conversion of carbon rich peat soils are throwing out millions of tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and contributing to climate change. There also remains some exploitation of workers and child labour. These are serious issues that the whole palm oil sector needs to step up to address because it doesn’t have to be this way.

I've finally managed to kick them after 30+ years with the help of a vape. I know it's not a perfect solution, but it's the closest I've come. Hope to transition off of it eventually. Friend of mine just put his down after three years of vaping, coming off 40 years of smoking. You do need to spend a decent amount and get a good one though, the first couple I tried were useless.

This! As an ex smoker who has fallen back to the habit many times, I publicly tell that smoking is simply pointless. You pay to smoke your body sick, and the dependancy will always be haunting you. Just don't touch a cigarrette. It's not worth anything.

Its so hard. It took me a long time to quit. The hardest was the ritual. I didn't know how to just...do my day without it. Like going to bed felt weird without having a last cigarette. I did it by weaning off them slowly. I allowed myself, say, 8 cigarettes a day. Whatever, and whenever I wanted them but only 8. I'd set them out on the kitchen counter so i could see them dwindling. After a couple weeks, I went down to 7. A couple weeks later, 6. Eventually I was down to just one, and at that point I didn't bother because what was one cigarette going to really do for me. It was hard - and there was backsliding ("Ugh I just had a rough day, I'll go have one whatever" "Oh everyone at work is going out for a smoke.." ) And eventually I just let it go. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life. Keep trying. I never thought I'd be off them, I couldn't even remember what life was like without them. You can do it, and we ex smokers ALL believe in you.

Aversion therapy worked for me. It retrains the brain into associating smoking with something unpleasant. Otherwise, you can kick the physical addiction, but the brain still has pleasant memories associated with lighting up. I've been free from nicotine addiction since 1987.

I'm sure this person only means well, but they sound a bit naive. I've watched people go from social smokers to smoking alone in the car, to smoking here, there, then everywhere. You can only do so much as a friend sometimes when it's an addiction.

I quit many times, for years at a time and most recently when i found out i was pregnant late 2018. I ended up sneaking a few when my son was very little (never in front of him. Ever). And then stopped for a year or so. And here we are again, secret smoking at least a couple of times a week. The addiction has tricked my brain into thinking i actually enjoy it when its disgusting. All i can say is my advice to everyone who may be curious about smoking - just don't do it. It's not cool anymore and it is really hard to kick for good for some people.

Ethical breeding does exist, but is unpopular due to the cost associated with purchase. I've had 5 pugs 2 of which came from an ethical breeder. They had none of the problems associated with the breed but were four times the price of a backyard breeder at the time. My other 3 were/are rescues from questionable breeding practices. Their list of health issues is long. I've been active in pug rescue for 15+ years and it's usually the poorly bred ones with a myriad of medical issues that end up with us. 99% of the time they come from backyard breeders and mills and their owners felt compelled to 'rescue' them from their situation. You're not rescuing them - you're perpetuating the problem. As long as there's a need, backyard breeders and mills will continue to exist.

You mean the cheap—-and often transparent, not to mention very badly sewn—-crap that falls apart with the first wash? Hard pass. Give me homemade or older and better made thrift store or online consignment stuff to wear. Sometimes you find real gems so well made they’re virtually indestructible. You may pay a bit more, but they’re what’s known as “investment pieces”, and well worth that investment.

This is why mine is Moissanite. It's a 9.5 on the hardness scale (diamonds are 10) they have MORE fire and brilliance than a diamond. They don't cloud or fade and are like an 1/8th of the cost. My engagement ring is 1.5 carats and cost like 1200 (to include setting) the same size diamond of the same clarity and color would've been probably close to 8k easy (or more) JUST for the stone. Moissanite for life for me. Oh.... and they're lab grown from the original moissanite which comes from space which is also super cool.

30 Items We All Should Quit Buying, As Pointed Out By People In This Online Group Plastic bottles. Just buy a water filter and fill up the same bottle Edit: for people saying just drink tap water, I agree 100%. I’m just saying there are a lot of people who only buy bottled water, drink it, throw it and buy another one. Ridiculously unnecessary. Those plastics are so difficult to recycle, if at all. Most just ends up in landfill anyway. Trying to convince them to buy a water filter is good middle ground! My FIL boasts about how eco-conscious he is but still does what I said above. Tap water isn't drinkable where I live after they goofed cleaning the system (is what we were told). Potable water isn't always available. And 1week is the maximum you should go between washings for healthy people's (& pets') water containers according to the research I've seen.

Same! We have really hard tap water, and it's nasty. We bought water filters. Filter's life is 1 week. After that, the water becomes i drinkable again. It's is much more expansive to change filters than buying water in the end. We try to go to water pump once in a while, and fill up huge gallons, but it's far, so can't really do it too often.

Nestle has destroyed our rivers here in Florida over bottled water. Our rivers are already at super low levels and Nestle is taking 1.2 million gallons of water out of Ginnie Springs every day. Plus, Nestle does this for free, they do not pay us for the water. So, we are losing the best place to spend a Saturday afternoon, ruining the ecosystem, and plummeting property value for absolutely nothing in return. They don't even employ locals, they have people come in from out of state to work on it. I hate plastic bottles more than anything. I see Floridians buying it and I want to smack the hell out of them. The water coming out of our pipes is the same they just bought from Nestle that they took from our ground!

Some people can't just drink the tap water. Rural people whose well that is sulfurous ( a new well will run thousands ). Rural communities who have screwed up the local water supply. Know a small town where the residents were advised not to drink the tap water for months. Doesn't even have to be rural ( Flint Michigan ). But small plastic bottles are ridiculous.

Tap water in my district is awful, and no filter can make it drinkable. My only option is buying water in big plastic jars - otherwise I would have to deal with a health damage and also would need to buy a new kettle and coffee machine every quarter.

I had only one major house product that I still bought in plastic, shampoo and conditioner because I hate the shampoo bars. Found a company that sells shampoo in aluminum bottles! So excited, and it is really good too, Alpine. Pretty much slowly got down to plastic free, took years of slowly adapting my habits and purchasing practices, looking through my garbage, but a month ago I finally found an alternative to the biggest plastic waste I still had.

De coloribus et gustibus... Of the 2500 or so named varieties and cultivars, the best ones don't store or travel well; so you real fave should likely be unknown when you post it in general discussion! My favourite is the white-flesh red-skin apples from the third tree from the back right in a mixed orchard nearby a house I lived 10y ago --- quite certainly not a named variety.

10 months max in cold storage and that’s because people demand to have fruit all year long. Not everyone can preserve food. And a lot of people prefer fresh to frozen or canned food so the industry provide fruit when it’s not in season so that we consumers can have food available to us all year long. It’s a drain on our environment to do this but it’s not gonna stop anytime soon as long as you have cities full of people demanding food when it’s not in season

Red Delicious apples were likely very delicious when they first began cultivating them. But apples trees are not clones, every tree is different, they take years and years to mature, and when it does, it could easily taste terrible, mushy and dry. It's notoriously hard to keep a breed tasting the same and they have been cultivating the Red Delicious for at least a 100 years.

    Marcellus the Third

True to an extent for these ---- they became horrible because of selection for looks and storage time https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Delicious until they bankrupted the apple industry ---- but the "clone" argument is wrong. Commercially apples are grafted as a scion (a stick with a leafbud or two) onto rootstock (controlling disease resistance, growth rate, and final tree shape/size), so they are absolutely clones; but which tree to graft from is chosen out of a variety of (grown-from-seeds) cultivars/variations --- trees live long enough to have absolutely identical clones for hundreds of years; these changed for marketing reasons.

I prefer to, and have for years, as they let me control the strength of my coffee. The pre-filled K-Cups tend to taste kind of weak to me. Not to mention, once you have a couple of them, you can spend a fraction for loose coffee than for the pre-filled cups. For example, my husband drinks loads of coffee, more than a box of K-Cups every week. At nearly $16/box for K-Cups, we used to spend almost $100/month on his coffee alone, while my refillable and loose coffee, plus my 2 cup a day limit, cost between $3.95 (for a generic I like) to $8.95 (name brand I like) every month. Less than 10% of what my husband spent. Once I got him on the loose coffee and reusable K-Cups, his bill went down to about 20% of what he used to spend.

Sometimes you just want to walk on your treadmill or ride your stationary bike without some virtual instructor faking enthusiasm and yelling at you nonstop.

It's a relatively new thing, but the pandemic made it into a giant market. It's the convenience of a gym (including advice/schedules) at home. And the eye-watering cost means you'll stick with it more likely than that gym subscription you started as a new year's resolution and keep prolonging more or less accidentally.

I have one. 2000$, great treadmill. But they will not allow you to have Netflix or any of those apps on it. And if you want to use any of their running programs maybe you have to pay a monthly sub for access to those. We just use it as a manual, set whatever you need, treadmill. So we don't pay monthly anything. Those subscriptions for preset walking and running paths are totally unnecessary. Just do your own planned thing on it. Just wished it allowed downloaded apps :(

Leave all wild animals—-especially the endangered ones—-the f**k alone! There are educated and trained experts who can monitor them, to be sure they’re healthy and not threatened, and to pick them up if they happen to wander into an area populated by humans who could harm them. Remember, that bear, elk, moose, wolf, etc that’s up that tree or telephone pole, or wandering your street, isn’t out to attack you unless you spook them. They’re actually way more afraid of you, and in way more danger from you, than you could ever be of/from them. So don’t approach, stay back, and call the experts.

people in asia think their are magical healing compounds in the hard scales... nope, the scales are made up of keratin like your hair or fingernails... Pangolins are an endangered species because of the bootleg medicine trade. They capture pangolins & send these gentle creatures off to their deaths in herbal medicine factories in Asia. STOP IT!... if you want to eat keratin for health reasons, eat your own fingernails & hair.

TBH, I would much prefer to clean out and return glass bottles and other containers to the grocery store, like I used to with soda bottles. There was always an attendant at the return area, who would count up your bottle return amount, and give you a ticket you could give the cashier at checkout, who would then deduct that amount from your bill. Then the store would return the bottles to the manufacturer, and probably get a pretty sweet discount on new product. I don’t see why this system can’t be brought back, as it worked really well for decades.

It's not just the items themselves, but also the packaging and shipping waste. I used to do unpacking and shelving at a major U.S. retailer, and the shipping waste (cardboard, Styrofoam and plastic wrap) was horrifying.

They used to use tough plastic straps to hold stuff on palettes. Now they wrap the whole thing up in non-reusable plastic.

in china they banned the use of plastic grocery bags a few years back in effort to cut down pollution, you either bring your own bags or purchase the brown sack bags or the reusable grocery bags that are made of natural materials. this was also around the time where pollution would get so bad in some places like Shanghai that they had school and business shutdowns because the air was so toxic. I live in the US now where plastic grocery bags are still very much a thing but I keep all of them and use them for trash bags and I always make sure to recycle them. however a bigger push needs to be made to provide brown sack bags or reusable bags that you bring to the store with you.

30 Items We All Should Quit Buying, As Pointed Out By People In This Online Group Most saltwater fish if they aren't willing to put in the effort, and certain species that just can't be kept in captivity even with the effort. 90% of saltwater fish you see in the store except for most clowns, some tangs, some seahorses, and I think maybe cardinal fish are all wild caught. More than any other pet, when you take home a saltwater fish you have purchased a piece of the environment and you should treat it with every bit of respect it deserves.

People Please Research Before You Get Any Animal!!! They're living beings that totally rely upon you for everything and are (usually) trapped and have no voice to explain your mistakes. Usually you are just "doing as you were taught" by those who didn't bother to learn better and perpetuate the problems. Like giving cats milk, dogs bones, rodents cheese...bc we've seen it in movies etc. These can make them sick, even kill them. 🙀😿

Freshwater fish also need some effort and knowledge as well. My 20+ year old sucker fish just passed away and went through 3 aquariums, each one bigger than the last. You also always had to make sure about the temperature and Ph levels, etc. cause his waste could kill his tank mates.

Especially fish like the Banggai Cardinalfish, which are endangered in the wild. Also, do some research when buying a fish. Many people see juvenile fish and think they'll stay that size and put them in a tank that is too small, or get fish that aren't compatible with eachother. And, if you're planning on getting a saltwater tank make sure you know what you are doing, as even "easy" saltwater fish are more difficult to keep than most freshwater fish, since they have more requirements on top of freshwater fish, such as salinity.

30 Items We All Should Quit Buying, As Pointed Out By People In This Online Group I can't understand the people that buy holiday decor every single year. Are people buying fake trees and tossing them every year and needing a new one? Same with ornaments and what not. Obviously people move out of their parents or they need to replace ornaments if they're broken or something but the amount in stores does not add up to me. Why so much new stuff every year?

30 Items We All Should Quit Buying, As Pointed Out By People In This Online Group Cheap children’s party favors. We aren’t talking the colorful pencils and paper pads that actually have some use. I’m talking about the non descript plastic forms with popular media stickers and other garbage. The amount of trash plastic available for this niche is staggering- especially given that most of those toys hold a child’s attention for 2 hours. Also- happy meal toys. Great for a collector, because most of them get thrown out 6 months after being found behind the couch. Legos are highly resealable/giftable and tradeable. Hot wheels last forever. Most toys have at least a possible second life. But party favor crap- is just crap.

It’s a WELL KNOWN thing, and I think the few people making fun of this are jobless or something because it happens in every market. The last time I was an employee for a small business, we had some incorrect info on Yelp about our business hours and they wouldn’t let us change it unless we paid. Then once we got a bad review which truly was just some jerk who was mad over a company policy (like we couldn’t approve him for an apartment because his credit score was like 400), he made up a bad review. Which is fine. But then Yelp reached out and tried to make us pay hundreds of dollars to remove it. I didn’t own that company but it was frustrating. I own a company now and I will never let us go on Yelp. The OP is right and anyone who disagrees is just telling on themselves for not knowing about modern business problems.

I went to this dentist and they were by far the best I had ever been to. Then I noticed the Yelp reviews were terrible. However, you could see all these great reviews that are greyed out and don't count. I thought something was strange, Yelp grays out all the good reviews and doesn't count them, they force business to pay to get better reviews. I wrote a review and it is actually grayed out and unverified as well. When I did some research and found out Yelp is a horrible, immoral company that does extort businesses. Honestly, don't use them.

They are the same game repackaged over again, for the last 10 years. They only update the roster, still cannot figure why people keep buying it after all this time.

a bit? They are the worst company in gaming and they have exclusive rights to these entire sports so no one else can make a competitor, so they simply recycle their code and the game never improves.. Just a roster update with a couple new stadium flybys. I have no limit for my hatred of EA.

30 Items We All Should Quit Buying, As Pointed Out By People In This Online Group Fantasy books that are first of a series of 13. Fantasy has become completely entrenched in this model where every story HAS to be a massive multivolume epic. I can count on one hand the number of multivolume series that actually NEEDED to be 8-10 books long. Most of them could have been told in one trilogy, if not just one epic book. I 100% believe that writers are pressured to stretch out their 2 volume stories into 8 purely for the additional sales.

I feel the need to speak up to exempt Sir Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" series, which is 40-something books long...and totally worth the investment.

But the Discworld books are stand alone in most instances, with others grouping into trilogies.

I disagree. If the book is <200, sure, but you can just get them from the library. I enjoy the anticipation of waiting for the next book, wondering how it will end. But that’s just my opinion.

Nope. I hate getting invested in a book and it's characters only for it to end after 1 - 3 volume. Some of the best books are part of a long series (Robin Hobb I'm looking at you)

The number of books in any one series should be determined by the author(s). But often publishers divide books into more pieces because they think it's what the buyers want. (Eg Fire & Blood by G R R Martin was published as one book in English but two in Swedish as the publishers thought Swedish readers would be overwhelmed by a thicker book. Apparently.)

I’m not a fan of fantasy series, though I may purchase several books by a favorite author. For instance, I have every book by Jane Austen and John Steinbeck, amongst others, because I like their work. My bookshelves are filled with classics, some more recent and solidly good fiction, plus non-fiction on subjects (lots of history) my husband and I both/each like, all accumulated over the course of decades.

I disagree. As a fan of Simon R. Green, owning his books (and having a signed one), makes me feel happy and I re-read them regularly. They are an often-overlooked masterpiece.

30 Items We All Should Quit Buying, As Pointed Out By People In This Online Group Not a sexy or flashy response, but no one should be buying a boiler, furnace, or water heater below 90% efficiency. The ~80% efficiency equipment is ancient technology and you are throwing your money away while also spewing more greenhouse gasses! Edit: well this did leagues better than I anticipated! Many of you have pointed out instances where the 80% is an appropriate choice, whether it be flue issues, a steam system, or you don't have the fund for the 90% upfront. On top of this I'll clarify that these upgrades should be made at the end of the boiler's life, it will almost never make financial sense to replace a functional appliance with a more efficient one, and the greenest equipment available is the one you already have. Heat pump crew, I'm with you, but currently, with US fuel mixes and electrical costs, there are very valid arguements against them. Everyone talking about how they have a 60 year old boiler that runs like a tank, this is some serious survivor's bias, if they all worked that well no one would have to replace old equipment and the industry would have died except for new construction.

Maintenance is key. Often repair technicians will try and talk you into replacing equipment rather than repairing it just because a tear-out and replace is much easier for them. In my experience components rarely all fail at once, and total replacement has significant dollar and environmental costs. I am a patient man and a competent technician. I replace nothing!

Maintenance and quality up front. Invest in a good solid boiler and maintain it really well, and it’ll last you for years, maybe even decades, before it needs to be replaced. Buy s**t and neglect it, and you’ll be throwing your money away replacing it with another piece of s**t every couple years.

I bought an older style water heater this spring because buying a new high efficiency one would have meant changing everything, getting a new furnace, cutting new holes in the exterior wall for venting... don't judge unless you know all the facts.

In the EU, installing a gas boiler in a newbuilt is OUTLAWED very soon (2025 in UK, moved forward from 2035), 90+% or not. Good.

Graphics processing unit aka a video card, an essential item for modern PC games. Last year in particular saw a huge demand in PC gaming components (everyone stuck at home) while releasing several new, high end GPUs that were quantifiable 'top dogs' in performance. One example the RTX 3090 was sold at ~$1,600 and was out of stock in many places in a matter of SECONDS. That's because they were all bought by auto-purchasing bots, and they were then being resold online for upwards of $3,000. Production can't keep up with demand and they are still being heavily scalped. HOWEVER the point of this thread is things people should stop buying, not business practices people should stop doing. Maybe stop buying high end video cards when the cheaper ones are just fine?

According to google - Someone who buys as many GPUs as possible when they get released. Usually using a piece of software which clicks the online purchases for them instead of doing it manually. Called a “bot”, since it can do so much faster and can watch for this much longer and quicker than any human could ever hope to do. Me after reading that - huh ???

no, people need to stop buying overpriced c*ap. this is actually the problem. unpopular opinnion, if I would ask 10k for something worth 2k and someone would actually pay that amount I would totally be fine with it. this is the same as when you go on holiday in the same spot every year and you complain everytime but don't go somewhere else. and no, you don't need the latest gpu, new pc games run perfectly fine on the previous generation gpu, and you don't need the new ps5 on launch day. scalpers are nothing more than people taking advantage of human stupidity.
