Here are some boomer takes for you - in the old days, when the sky was bluer, the water was wetter, and the politicians were more honest, the films were much better as well. Indeed, if we consider the development of cinema from the point of view of the average quibble, then films can be compared to good wine - the older, the better.
It's a funny paradox - twenty years ago, you and I, for instance, heavily criticized Peter Jackson for his adaptation of The Lord of the Rings (by the way, I still wonder, why did they cut Tom Bombadil?), while today the trilogy looks like an absolutely immortal classic. At the time of Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio was "just another handsome guy" - but how happy we were for the Great Leo two decades later when his outstanding Hollywood career was finally crowned with a well-deserved Oscar!
But in fact, there are actually some trends in modern films that infuriate any picky viewer. Yes, from a technical, visual point of view, the films have only gotten better, but everything else... Just agree, there are many points here that can be complained about.
Recently, a thread appeared in the AskReddit community, the topic starter of which asked people just one question: "What annoys you about new movies these days?" As of today, the thread has nearly 5.8K upvotes, and around 8.7K comments, as varied as Eddie Murphy's characters in some of his own films. Acting and sound mixing, plot misses and endless sequels or remakes - in other words, modern Hollywood has left no stone unturned.
The most interesting thing is that another twenty years will pass and we will sing praises to the very films that we criticize with such passion today, but so far Bored Panda has collected for you a selection of the most interesting, unexpected and simply the most popular comments from the original thread. So please feel free to scroll to the very end, and if you don't find something on this list that bugs you personally, just be sure to add it in the comments. Credits.
Post-credits scene. We are almost sure that many claims can be made for the cinema of any era, both justified and not so, but these are all exclusively games of our subconscious. Someday we will talk about this in more detail, but this is a completely different story.

How dark they are. Like literally dark. It's difficult to see what's going on, especially for those of us with vision problems.
Especially when trying to watch it on your TV in the middle of the day with the sunlight glaring across your screen.
...and there's dust on the screen which reflects light from the surroundings and limits light emitted from the screen.
Load More Replies...Especially in fight scenes. Can’t tell what the hell is happening. Edit: I just realized how old I sound saying that.
Reminds me of the second Alien vs Predator movie. I still have no idea what the hell is going on there, I can't see sh*t in that movie.
That is so annoying and unnecessary. I mean, it’s a movie, don’t they want us to see what’s going on since so many people worked hard to design sets, costumes and backgrounds?
OMG I thought this just annoyed me! Especially when streaming, so annoying!
IF I watch movie--which is basically never nowadays--I have to watch it at night with my lights off. I can hardly see anything on the screen half the time, even with games. I don't want to have to raise the gamma to play something.
The sound mixing. Turn up the volume to hear the dialogue and suddenly you have damaged ear drums because there was an explosion. It's insane. Looking at you Nolan.
But you shouldn’t have to turn on subtitles because you can’t hear half the movie at a normal volume.
Load More Replies...I've noticed that ads are almost always significantly louder than the actual content. I'll be watching a sad scene, with the volume up to hear the dialogue better, and then right after a tragic death, "TACO BELL HAS 2 FOR $5 WITH NACHOS-"
I've noticed that older movies like Alfred Hitchcock movies are perfectly understandable. I can hear every word in the dialogue. New movies, can't understand a word. Mumble mumble mumble.
Exactly. Part of this, of course, is that in those days, the sound was being mixed for mono, rather than stereo or 5.1 surround. However, acting styles and a more "naturalistic" directing approach also contributed to this issue, with much of the dialogue in later films being delivered in hushed tones or a far more subtle volume. There is, of course a way around that, with proper recording techniques and proper mixing techniques, to make sure all the dialogue is understandable. Maybe modern directors are clueless about it because they *know* what the dialogue is supposed to be, so when they listen back to the film during the editing process, they aren't at a loss to know what's being said. The rest of us, however...
Load More Replies...I was watching a recent documentary last night and half the comments were complaining that the music was covering up the narrator. I thought it was fine then got to a certain part and yeah, I have no idea what the narrator was saying
YES! Background music on a primarily talking thing is beyond insanity.
Load More Replies...I HAAAAATTEEE this. Just add multiple audio tracks and let us pick the one we want to use. Keep the theatre sound for people with surround sound but make an adjusted track for regular-àss TVs.
I don’t understand how this has been such a persistent issue for such a long time.
Not just movies but TV shows - they take a book that's got great reviews, make a poor job of translating it on screen and then flip the ending so its the opposite of what happened in the book. Proceeds to blame the audience when they pan it for being c**p.
I always thought the problem was not sticking to the heart of the story. You can make changes all you need to if the core of the story is the same. Disney's Mysterious Benedict Society show is amazing...they made a ton on changes on setting and plot, but they kept the 4 main characters consistent and the message consistent.
I used to think films were superior to television shows but now can see if done right television can just dive so much deeper into a story.
The biggest problem is that ignore the author's voice and the very central theme of the story.
In Holland there is a great book with a haunting end (The Golden egg by Tim Krabbé). Great dutch movie with the same ending. Then (the same director) they made a Hollywood remake. The Vanishing with Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock. And they changed the ending. (The best part) Because audiances want a happy ending. Shame!
Based on characters from book - they take just the names of characters, in best case their occupation and that's all. Nothin else to do with book.
They literally just did this with the new Monster High movie. I never watched the series but my 5 and 2yo love monsters so it's perfect for them. We just watched the new movie last night and my 5yo is like, "Why is it so different?" It's not a bad movie, very formulaic but at least the music and acting is good, makes up for the lackluster story. But they just took the setting, character names and appearances, and chucked the rest! Just use new characters and call it a new series ffs!
Load More Replies...Not just that but literally EVERY book is now a movie/TV show. Like someone's like oh [insert book name here] is a book? Well I watched the TV series and it was terrible
They kick out Henry Cavill and immediately everything gets flushed down the toilet.
Load More Replies..."Lucifer", "Constantine", "I am Legend", "World War Z"; Hey, these things are really, really popular, and have a huge fan-base, so let's spend millions on the rights, throw out everything but the name, because we want to make it more "accessable".
So much "I am Legend." Literally made the ending the opposite of the point of the book.

That instead of actually making gay characters that are legitimately good, and have purpose in the narrative, they just make being gay that character's entire thing. Like: "Hey look at how gay this person is. We aren't homophobic at all" This is gonna sound awful, but no representation is better than s****y representation. Just talk to a gay guy, if you need information. I'm sure you'll get a lot of insight, and it'll make what you're working on even better.
Yes! More bi representation please, and lesbians should look like lesbians not supermodels. There are lipstick lesbians out there, but most are "normal" or masculine of centre, and those folks are rarely represented on screen.
Load More Replies...This! If I can pick out the gay characters just from looking at them, that's not cool. Sure, some people act stereotypically "gay," but a lot of gays don't. Your sexuality does not need to be your entire personality!
Yeah. You should have a character who is gay, not a gay character
Half Bad : The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself does a great job of just that.
Load More Replies...Yes! Like the old movies where they used to have one black side-character and everyone else, even the extras, were white. Great inclusion, but that's not the only black person in America.🙄
The Fugitive TV series featured POC that are not side characters, but intricate to the plot of the episode. There's even an episode where the titular fugitive is hiding out in this house that is occupied by two men that have lived together for over twenty years and there is definitely a subtle allusion that they're gay, but, since the show was made in the sixties, making it obvious would have been instant cancellation, even though the show was a major success.
Load More Replies...Watch the series "Schitts Creek". The gay representation in that series was so casually easy with no angst or spotlight on any gay issues like homophobia or coming out. David's relationship with Patrick was everything I hope for in gay representation in every TV series.
Yes! I love David and Patrick—they are both so lovable and beautiful. David is the true heart of the show.
Load More Replies...I was pleasantly surprised by the Disney+ show "Willow". There is a canon f/f couple, but both of those girls are important and complex characters even outside of their relationship. Definitely a step in the right direction.
Disney had been doing this for awhile - they put f/f or m/m couples in the scene or story and don't say ac word about it - it's just there in the story like it is in real life. No banging a drum, no making a scene because it's no more important than the m/f couples that are there, because why should it be?
Load More Replies...See also: People of colour. I hate shows where the black character is all about being black and how beat down they are by white people. Just let them exist, please.
or be the hero and it is not because they overcome the difficulties of race, but just because they are heroic. I mean, apart from will smith. We've seen tons of him. Idris Alba is good. More of that.
Load More Replies...That or taking established characters in a myhos (comic to visual mediums related mostly) and making them homosexual. How about introducing NEW characters as such but they need not make it their entire personality. Include by all means but no need to shine 40 spotlights on said trait.
Trailers. They're always about 4 minutes long, give away the entire plot, show all the best scenes and jokes and basically ruin the movie before you've even watched it.
If the whole plot and best bits of the movie fit into a 4 minute trailer, there's something horribly wrong with the movie.
And that has often been exactly the case. They show you the gold in the preview and then you watch the movie and find out the gold was just the gilding on the turd. :)
Load More Replies...I'm very sceptical of comedies these days. Seen way too many that were absolute c**p. It was pretty obvious that the only actual funny bits were put in the trailer.
I purposely avoid watching trailers, ESPECIALLY if I already know it's a movie I'm defintitely going to watch (based on the director or actors or whatever). Heck, if I can avoid knowing even the premise or genre of the movie, then that's even better. For example, when I watched the movie Devil's Advocate, I just thought it was gonna be a movie about lawyers, which made it a much more entertaining experience as I learned there was more to it lol.
That movie would be wild to watch with zero idea what it's about going into it.
Load More Replies...Even worse, trailers that are so lousy and confusing they don't even make you want to watch the movie. Trailers need a plot-line too, but save the good stuff for the film.
Or when a really awesome scene in the trailer isn't even in the movie..
A good movie is the opposite. Short, vague trailor that doesn't show all the best scenes, sometimes making the movie look crappy. Then you watch it and you're like "This is worth watching again."
I really need to stop watching trailers or reading about them. I just watched RRR last night and enjoyed the plot so much more because I didn't even read the plot blurb before watching. Just think about the experience of watching The Empire Strikes Back without bunches of plot knowledge beforehand. Now besides trailers and complete movie summaries there's also 18 interviews with certain actors talking about how happy they are to have their final movie in a franchise 4 months before the movie comes out. So you know their character is either dying or leaving in the story which lessens the emotional impact.
300 million budget, plot written out in crayons.
I'd like to say written by toddlers, but I happen to know some very smart toddlers with very good storytelling abilities.
Naw, have you ever heard a story from a 5 year old? Way way more imaginative than 90% of stuff getting made now. Good? Maybe not, but at this point I almost just want novelty after years and years of sameness.
Even the prettiest of effects and landscape can't cover a bare plot full of holes.
Sucker Punch!! The movie looks amazing. The main reviews are "I didn't realize you could make a movie with no plot" 😂😂
Lack of originality and a reliance on franchises.
I think 'The Mandalorian', The Book of Boba Fett' and 'Andor' are injecting originality and freshness into a stale franchise. I think this is because it's set in a universe you know, but with different main characters. Old faces make appearances but it's the newbies who have the limelight.
Load More Replies...They're all so formulaic. Here's the common recipe: 1- Lovable loser (good guy) gets powers. 2- Bad guy beats good guy in low-stakes fight. 3- Training montage or help from friends. 4- Big fight and it looks like bad guy is gonna win. 5- Good guy defies the odds and wins.
Forgot the cliche love side story because we all know nothing is more important than characters finding love while the ship is sinking.
Load More Replies...I was bullied for reading comic books as a child, and I'm so happy now MARVEL and DC are mainstream
Same. I was a girl reading in the late 80's and early 90's.
Load More Replies...Whoa, don’t show a picture of Marvel for that. How can you call those movies unoriginal? To be unoriginal it would have to be adapted from something. Those movies were semi-adapted from multiple somethings and stitched together, and in such a way that people waiting decades for these stories to be adapted are left feeling unsatisfied. And not just the stories, but the characters themselves were done dirty.
Or they have no new ideas so they go around remaking old movies from the 80s and 90s, or giving them unneeded sequels.
Especially when they try to make it all diverse, empowering or reimagined for "the modern audience" - and basically butcher everything that made the franchise popular in the first place. Bonus points for calling fans of the franchise bigots or gatekeepers to distract from the bad quality in writting
Comic books have always been progressive. Can I ask if you have a particular instance or two in mind of diversity ruining an onscreen adaptation?

That it's somehow seen as avant garde to have your actors mumble. If I can't understand what they are saying I *will* lose interest. Also when an entire movie is too dark to see anything. Sure, there are times it needs to be dark for the plot, the time etc, but if I have to spend the whole flick squinting, I'm not going to enjoy it.
There needs to be a balance of aesthetic and the ability to actually understand what's going on
How many times is this on the list? I'm not even 10 down and this is the third time? I hate these too, but so did the first two posts.
The volume difference, too, my goodness! When watching a movie at night while others are asleep you need the volume loud enough to hear the conversations, but then it’s too loud during action times
I detest mood lighting. They are talking outside at noon on a sunny day. Ut Oh, something dark is discussed or there should be tension here....it's suddenly night-time!
Ever notice New York is often set at night, and raining or recently rained?
His is happening with tv shows as well. The BBC have been criticised for this lately.
I miss practical effects and props because it forced people to shoot more in real locations. Kept movies feeling more "real" and grounded even with more fantastical setting. I think alot of 80s 90s movies and a perfect balance of practical and computer effects.
Too much CGI just makes the movie become a "look what we can do" thing.
One of the reasons why, I think anyway, that the effect of Back to the Future hold up so well even today
Take Andor versus, say, the book of Boba fett. Both star wars TV shows off of formerly side characters. There's a lot of reasons why andor is so much better than the book, but one is that they used real sets. It just feels so much more intense and real.
Too much shot in front of a green screen. How do you get really quality acting if they aren’t in a realistic setting?
This is what I say!! The actors dont do much acting anymore in certain films because they're just dong some movements in frong of a green screen, not really interactijg much. The Gandolf actor apparently had a huge issue with this in LOTR because half the time he had to pretend he was talking to the hobbits etc.
Load More Replies...That's why the effects in Jurassic Park hold up so well, though our knowledge of dinosaurs has grown and changed in the 30 years since...
If you are a fan of practical effects and Tales from the Crypt, I highly recommend watching the Creepshow series (the show not just the movies) on Shudder. All the effects are practical and it really is amazing to watch.
They oversuse cgi. I get that it's sometimes needed, but not always. They always argue that shooting in real location is expensive, especially when it's touristy place or place somewhere halfway across the world, but I don't think that cgi is cheaper. They can use more set pieces, it looks realistic enough in movies. Or miniatures. Sure making realistic miniatures wouldn't be too complicated nowadays?
This is one reason why Tom Cruise insisted on doing his own stunts in Top Gun Maverick -the story is very corny, but the action scenes are just fantastic
"Strong female character"= Frowny unlikable b***h contrasted with oblivious, stupid and petty men.
The issue is that when writing female leads, you just kinda... can't win. If she's not a "frowny unlikable b*tch", she is "emotional whiny b*tch". Doesn't fail? She's a Mary Sue. Fails more often? She's useless. Is she queer, person of color or any other minority? She's just pandering to the SJWs. In short, no matter what you write, the anti-sjw morons are gonna tear her apart anyway.
Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley would disagree. It's absolutely possible to write strong female characters. But the producers don't really want to. Misogyny is still going strong in Hollywood
Load More Replies...Strong female character does not mean a total lack of any likable male characters.
2005 Tomb Rider, female lead, and One of the antagonists is actually inteligent and likable, he's still an a*****e, but a charming a*****e.
Load More Replies...YESSS!!! We need more girls like Nat Romanoff. Feminine and a good team-player, but nobody messes with her.
Or when they totally miscast a character. I spent an hour and a half one night stewing over how unbelievable this actor was for this character.
I thinkthe people that did the beest job with this were the Encanto creators with Luisa's character.
She's awesome - she's strong (physically and emotionally), she dances, she cries, she has hobbies - she's a *person*. Gasp!!
Load More Replies...Also the inability of directors to recognise that strength comes in many ways, not just a stereotyped 'masculine' strength involving women dressed in leather and throwing punches without hesitation (and without provocation in some places). Sure, I'm not saying women can't be like that, but being 'strong' is still being seen as being 'masculine'. Can I please like pink, be introverted, and still have strength of character without being portrayed as yet another female stereotype? Directors and scriptwriters need to start learning to write women as people instead of, "how can I avoid stereotypes and by doing so fall into another one"
Or the 5 minute sex scenes that have nothing to do with anything but happen 5 times a movie.
What movie has 25 minutes of sex scenes, or even just one 5 minute sex scene? Are you watching porn remakes by accident, instead of the original movie? Perhaps you clicked "John's Wick" or "Womb Raider" by mistake or something? 🤔
Most uncomfortable, awkward 5 minutes when you're watching with your family.
I had a friend who was a gay man ask why there was such a gratuitous sex scene between two men in a show we were discussing. I said well, heterosexuals have been dealing with this forever and ask actresses playing gay women about it. Just late to the party for this one. Sorry.
The actress must have a contract with no nudity in it....can understand that. Before the movie is out your breasts are all over the internet and in fake porn
Load More Replies...Penny Dreadful.... I liked the show, but they overdid it with the sex scenes.
Funny story. Moved from US to UK with my dad. I was about 12? And both Highlander 3 and I want to say Chucky 3 but doesn't fit the timeline, but another scary movie was out .. So we try to see the scary movie, but they won't let my dad buy a ticket for me even though he was accompanying me so we go to highlander 3 ... And that was when I first saw a pretty detailed sex scene on screen with full on to put it delicately "bush". Even then I was thinking they wouldn't let me see the scary movie? But okay with this?
I hate the soft porn that is in just about everything, I know what sex is I'm an adult, I've done that thing in myriad ways. I much prefer the old way in films when 2 people went into a bedroom and shut the door.
When they aren’t “new” but an unnecessary sequel to something from 30 years ago, or a sequel to a movie that had a definitive ending and never needed a sequel. I’m looking at you, A Christmas Story Christmas.
It’s like no one has ideas anymore. They just remake everything.
Very rarely you do get a new idea. And when that idea is well implemented you get a show that will be a classic. But most producers and executives would rather go with the safe rehash that'll make a small profit instead of risking a new idea that might flop.
Load More Replies...Meh, there were one or two that were ok, not anywhere near the original but not God awful.
Load More Replies...I've always hated the Christmas story's haven't seen the second yet
They're out of ideas. Millionth adaptation of The Three musketeers just had premiere.
Alright I understand and agree but... a Christmas story is part of a book collection there's another movie of their summer vacation with different actors accept the dad I believe
For horror and mystery, everything having to be explained.
A movie like the original Alien would be lambasted by online critics if it were released today, for the simple reason that by the end of it you know next to nothing about what happened. What was the creature? What was the derelict? Why did the company want it, really? The movie has stood the test of time precisely because it avoided answering those and other questions.
For most horror movies, I want to know some of the why and what, enough that I don't spend the whole movie wondering wtF is happening. Alien gave just enough info...no more was needed.
Rewatched the 1982 version of The Thing recently, love the ending of that film.
Load More Replies...Alien didn't need a definite explanation because it wasn't about the creature. The real horror was how a giant corporation dehumanized their employees to such an extent they willing sent people to their death for something that *might* be profitable. Meanwhile, the employees existed in a terrifying capitalist system with extremely little power to survive. In good horror, the monster usually represents some real-world threat. That why final reveals of monsters that are simply monsters fall so flat.
The best Horror/Scifi movies are when we don't know "why" or "what". Our own brains make better monsters and plot endings.
This is one reason why No Country for Old Men was soooo good. They didn't pander to the audience. They told the story as intended, you figure it out.
I'm a big fan of cop shows, CSI, Criminal Minds, Castle, and those are just the Cs! It's annoying when the main character is telling the sub-characters to "get a shot of that evidence" or "we need elimination prints" or "let's check the security footage." Um...yeah. That's some basic investigative work right there and these people know their jobs. Duh.
This is the exact reason that the entire AVP franchise has survived and continued to thrive; BECAUSE of the unanswered questions that each movie raised that the next one(s) answered, only for each one to then raise more questions.
Movies are usually made for the middle of the bell curve when it comes to intelligence. Or maybe lower. Point being, they often use heavy foreshadowing and such so even the dim bulbs can keep up with what is happening / what is likely to happen next. TLDR: They want the dumb people to buy tickets as well.
A lot of movies feel like they were written by a marketing department.
It feels like they got 10 execs in a room and everyone wrote down ideas, characters, plot-points, etc that they know will sell - and then tried to organize them into a narrative structure.
There's no vision. There's no plot progression. Its just one random event next to another random event, and characters delivering s****y one-liners. Like writing madlibs.
Even B-movies from the 80's and 90's have better narrative structure and story-telling than half the new movies out today.
They don't make movies - they make 'content'
I love the movie The Glass Menagerie with Sam Waterston and Michael Moriarty great dialogue, no loud crash/bang or special effects garbage. A great movie where the actors had to actually act and no loud music to override the conversations
Very true. There is a reason I don't watch new movies anymore. Also rather action movies. Three hours of big fiery explosions and 5 minutes of plot.
That's exactly what happened with the last three movies of Star Wars. What made things even worse, for me at least, was that there wasn't an overarching plot line to hold those movies together.
Pandering to China
It's higher. But I agree. Stop filming for corporates.!
Load More Replies...Hollywood was doing this Nazi Germany before the war started. Oddly, Germany was also segregating indigenous populations and genocide. Germany also claimed Austria was German territory. Does any of this sound familiar? Hollywood giving in to China's demands, China's treatment of the Uighurs, and China claims Taiwan is their territory. History always repeats itself.
Don't forget pandering to Apple. Apple seems to supply most movies and TV programs with computers, giving the impression that Apple, with PC market share of 9.8 per cent, is the biggest computer company in the world (where "the world" is another way of saying "the US"). Also, where Apple supply PCs to film makers, they FORBID any villains from using their products. A baddie will never have an iPhone. A potential plot spoiler if you look for it.
Pandering to anyone, really. Write something original and moving and all audiences will be drawn to it. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" should have proven that any genre can produce cross-demographic success.
Every country in the world should be wary of the motives of the Chinese government. I think they not-so-secretly want to take all the resources they can get their hands on from whomever, wherever.
Lack of originality
Cant apply this to every new movie but most of them are recycling movies that have been made before.
I am 75 years old, and every almost movie I see I feel like I have seen before even though of course I haven't if it's a new movie. The problem is I've seen the same plots used so many times that nothing seems new today to me.
I feel you. I'm in my 60s and have felt that way for most movies for some years now.
Load More Replies...It only gets worse as you get older. There are only so many storylines.
I don't watch them myself, but oh my damn, every Hallmark Christmas movie is practically the same.
I'm not sure if Hollywood remakes of foreign films fits here but those that make random, unnecessary plot changes are particularly annoying.
This - plus when the 'recycles' come out at the same time as each other. Movies with more or less the same idea done by different studios. (e.g. Armageddon) Related - movies with formulaic casts that seem the "same" because of the roles. For example, most Disney movies. You usually have the bully, the fat but lovable sidekick, the smart witty girl who gets things gone, the unpopular nerd who proves he is valuable to the team and so on. Doesn't matter if they are kids or forest creatures. The formula sells tickets so lather, rinse, repeat.
Write the entire plot in your personal notebook, then write the script, then do the stuff to get the movie.
Daughter in drama school, I should check to be sure, but in reality there are only about 36 possible plots for a story.
It’s just Marvel movies. I’m so freaking tired of regurgitated super hero formulas. Please god just give me one morsel more of original story. Everything, Everywhere, All at Once can only go so far.
You are not required to watch superhero movies. There is a large number of independent movie makers out there if you care to put just a little amount of effort into your movie selection process!!
Load More Replies...I think The Boyz, even though it's not actually a movie, was written well. The "heroes" were like normal people with powers (and how normal people might act if they became powerful). I hate it when the heroes are purely good and the villains are purely evil with insignificant reasons to justify it.
I really enjoy the marvel movies, and as an avid reader I love that they interconnect allowing the viewer to become properly invested in the characters and sub plots. Although not a movie I think the last series of GoTs was disliked so much (aside from the furor over the ending) was due to it feeling rushed (a bit like the ending of Feists books, amazing stories, beautiful detailing and then rushed at the end)
I bet a lot of it boils down to studios / investors being more willing to invest in a known popular product rather than risking $$ on a new hero that might go straight to the dustbin. Part of my problem is I was never that in to Spiderman / Superman etc even as a kid. And how many times can they do "Invulnerable hero is vulnerable and almost dies except he didn't and now he is invulnerable again" movies? Yawn. But more Deadpool please. I enjoy funny quirky stuff like Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy.
I’m not obsessed but I like superhero movies because it’s like an escape from reality. Sorry, but I liked The Green Lantern.
I liked Marvel movies, but they've got too stupid in the last couple of years
I like them and could watch them again and again. So please, keep them coming. EDIT: The thing w/the MCU is it keeps evolving and even though there's tons of content, someway or another, it's all connected. From the Disney+ series and movies, it's all held together quite well. "Superhero movies" generally have the one formula to go by, but comic geeks like myself enjoy the transition from comic to movie adaptations. I don't like RomComs so I don't watch them. If you don't like these kinds of movies, then it's just as simple, don't watch them.
I’m tired of superhero movies and it seems it’s all you can find at theatres these days. I wanted to see the movie about Emmett Till. That story is so close to my heart. Nope. In one theatre it would take an hour to drive to.😠 All the others had superhero movies or part 2 of some science fiction. “The Whale” is on at a theatre 30 minutes from me. I’m racing out to see it tonight before they quickly yank it for some fantasy movie.
Same, same, and same. I just don't bother with theaters much anymore. I wait for stuff to hit streaming or Red Box. My local theater used to do great indie movies, but they've cut the selection back so much. Now they'll have three showings of a super hero movie and little else.

Several things, really.
There's no Hero's Journey.
No character development that amounts to anything.
Lots of movies go out of their way to not offend the loudest 10% of Twitter trolls.
More and more movies are portraying men as weak, bumbling, incompetent, children.
Fight scenes look like they were shot in an earthquake.
110lb lingerie models with no muscle tone flat-lining a guy that outweighs them by 80lbs like they were Brock Lesnar or Mike Tyson.
"That's NOT how cars work! Like at all!" - me
"That's NOT how physics works!!" - everyone who passed middle school physics
"More and more movies are portraying men as weak, bumbling, incompetent, children." They are? Huh. I guess they don't like it when the tables turn at all. Case in point the very funny Ghostbusters movie. Written by SNL people *just like the original*. Exact same type of humor (less rapey, though) - but nope. We can't have nice things because men can't handle Strong Female Leads.
This is such a bad argument. So many movies have female characters men absolutely love. Sarah connor, ripley, furiosa, black widow, wonder woman, alita battle angel, the list goes on and on. Saying men dont like something just because it contains strong women is totally wrong.

Most movies are getting watered down for the sake of mass appeal. I get why, but it just sucks
Formulaic plots. Gimme me a movie not afraid to make a dramatic and shocking ending. The film 'The Mist', based on the Stephen King story, had the bravest, and most unexpected ending.
Oh, that ending kicked you right in the guts didn’t it. These days everything has to have a smooth sail to a happy ending, it’s unrealistic. Prime example, Hocus Pocus 2. All the fright of a loaf of bread and a completely untrue to character redemption ending.

Just take a look outside Hollywood, plenty of (arthouse) films that have an unexpected and/or unhappy ending!
Worst thing is lack of logic/realism. Inconsistencies within the world movie is in. Unrealistic physics. Awful stories, dumbass `funny` scenes that have nothing to do with the story. List goes on forever.
I wonder if BP has made a lst of "bad science in movies' - the biology in movies is often times so awful.
Like Fast and the Furious. It's supposed to be taking place in a real world but it's so f*****g unrealistic they should just add some dragons to fly.
Ever realize not once do those guys get pulled over for a random highway safety check for all the doodads on their supped up cars, never get their cars in impounded for street racing, or get pulled over for speeding? You cannot convince me none of their zooming, speeding around won't catch the attention of the police. BUT the police always arrive at the perfect time when it becomes convenient to the good guys.
Load More Replies...Who cares about realism? It's a movie. I want escapism, not logic
As long as the internal logic is there I don't generally care about realistic physics unless it's a movie about physics.
Load More Replies...Unrealistic physics, yes. In many movies, for example in Lord of the Rings and in Avengers End Game there are scenes that look like computer games. To me it immediately breaks the illusion. Suddenly I become aware of sitting and watching a movie that is using CGI effects.
Movie and shows still can't figure out cell phones they just make them not work or the person ignore the call when lack of communication is needed to drive the story forward
Yes, the amount of places where "there's no signal" is also a bit ridiculous!
Load More Replies...I hate that too. I get that suspension of disbelief is necessary to enjoy some movies but there is a line in the sand. When something is just too illogically stupid it slams the brakes on the film.
No, somethings are só illogical and stupid, that end up being hilarious, for instances the 80s movie " airplane " dumbest movie i ever Saw, probably One of the best comedies ever done. Just the detail that they are on a comercial jet, but the engine sound is from a propeler plane its frikking hilarious.

I am trying to teach my kids not to yell and be sassy like kids on tv. I hate it
Load More Replies...YES. Very noticable in shows that started off brilliantly but then ran out of story lines and then forced the humour making the show just unwatchable.
No, but hear me out (because roommate is re-watching Friends) - I detest that audience LOL cue. Like Friend1 says sth, audience LOLs and I can't help but think the director goes "This scene is funny so here is your cue to laugh"... but like I said, hear me out - IT'S almost NEVER FUNNY!
The overreliance on cgi. It just looks too plastic. CGI should be used where it makes sense, not for the whole movie.
Most movies are remakes. We are currently living in a time of close to zero creativity.
Forced diversity when it doesn't even make sense in the movie. I don't mind diversity, but it shouldn't feel out of place in the movie.
And forced diversity.. It's called representation...ugh, I saw some people online being annoying because the Sonic movies have an interacial couple...IT'S NOT FORCED IT MAKES ME AS A BIRACIAL PERSON FEEL SEEN!!!!!!!
Yes, in Sonic it makes sense, but in a movie that plays in a time period in Europe that had no POC living there? Or changing a historical figure that definitely wasn't black? That's not representation, that's forced diversity. Now, I do think there should be more movies that do allow a proper representation. And I absolutely do think that we need more historical films about POC people. But please give us movies about people who actually were black and show their accomplishments, because they do exist! And not making a white person black. There are people who cry for a black Cleopatra. But she was a descendant from greek ancestors! She was white! But there were black pharaohs, even female ones, who also had very fascinating lives, so make a movie about them! That's representation.
Load More Replies...Yeah cgi is boring. Look at the original star wars movies. They used puppets and it looked better than cgi
Forced representation results in whoever is being represented being represented very poorly because they can't find a good reason for that particular person to be there. And while some ethnicities/genders/orientations are shown in a positive light often others, possibly in the same movie, are shown in a negative light or as villains because they haven't complained yet. Example: Taken represents Albanians as immoral traffickers but this is not deemed racist because they're technically white (who cares about racism against Europeans?) But still foreign and exotic enough to be evil and different. It also results in the character having no substance or personality other than the fact they're "diverse". So they're just going to be referred to as "that Muslim character", For example
I hate that sexuality and race are viewed in the same light. Or sexuality and any physical descriptors. You see a woman or an Asian person and you can relate. But sexuality is unseen. If it's not a major character, writers have to go out of their way to say hey, this person is gay or trans or something. If that person is a main character with a romantic interest, ok. But just squeezing some normally unseen diversity in there definitely feels like diversity for the sake of diversity.
I'm worried. I want creativity, originality, all that stuff...but it going away just makes me worried. I have officially decided I MUST publish my books if it's the LAST THING I DO!
Awful lighting, bad color grading, frequency of cuts, and why is every movie f*****g 2 hours and 45 minutes now a days? Make movies an hour and a half again, obviously I know there are exceptions to everything I said, tons of new movies come out every year that kick a*s but the big budget studio features just aren't doing it for me
I like longer movies but only if they use the extra time for a more complex plot. Adding more explosions or sex scenes aren't it
I fully agree! It really depends on how the plot is filled... I saw some great movies where I got lost in an entire new world and I wished it never would have ended. Or when time is spent on character development, explaining certain important facts. But I hate endless fruitless monologues, sex scenes, boring comedy... Edit: I loved every second of Kubicks' "The Shining"... Sooo good!
Load More Replies...I love a long film, especially if it is a book adaptation a lot of the plot has to be cut or condensed to accomodate shorter attention spans which often results in films being unsuccessful/panned.
I do think the reintroduction of the intermission would help
Load More Replies...If a movie is going over 2 hours, I'd rather have a mini series.
I find the time comment interesting. It suggests to me (right or wrong) that the poster is younger than me. When I was young, 2 hours was the norm for movies. I can remember people commenting on the missing time when more and more movies started being 90 minutes. So for me, the trend of more movies being 2 hours again is just going back to how it used to be.
hmmm I dont' agree on the time thing. The LOTR directors' cut is much better, you understand better why certain things are. Also gives more time for char dev. That's why people are opting for tv series bingeing now, because of char dev
I agree we don't need 3 hour movies. Way to long to sit through. I have a family with small children to care for. I don't have time to sit on my duff for 3 hours at a time and stare at a screen. (The small ones get bored and wander off to get into things if the movie goes to long. A love a huge book, but with a book I can put it down to take care of what I need to and the story does not lose momentum. Hard to pause a movie to fix and eat dinner and get the kids ready for bed, and then go back to it. Or try to pick it up again the next day. Movies are best when kept to a reasonable limit.
Actually, they used to be much longer and had an intermission, based on the way theater and concerts still are, I guess to give performers in live shows a break. Bring back intermission!
I struggle to pay attention long enough to watch the shorter movies let alone the long ones, so much rewinding
I hate the new Disney films the animated characters made to look half real half not real and they’ve made them look the same, they should make a new movie but in the old style animation like a lady and the tramp animation(without the racism obviously)
2D animation rules. I watched Avatar the Last Airbender for the 1st time in like 2020 and I was deeply saddened they don't make animation like this anymore.
Yeah ATLA is amazing. Gorgeous art. If my books ever get made into shows or movies, I'm gonna insist on hand-drawn animation
Load More Replies...Or unnecessary Disney live action movies that are copy of older animated movies.
The stories were often more complex and the characters were more unique. Disney films are so formulaic it pulls me out of the narrative.
I read somewhere lat year that Disney is going to be going back to actual regular animation. I hope that’s true cuz I’m so tired of watching computer animated cartoons. Cartoons are supposed to look like cartoons not real life
I read something like " I hate Disney the look, the way they real look look real!"
Fight and Action scenes. It took weeks of training back in the days just to get one shot. You cannot fix that with 4 cuts per second. Bad Exampe: Taken 3, Good Example: Creed or John Wick
Yeah, or when they tell the camera operator to just shake the c**p out of the camera during the scene so it looks all chaotic and you won't notice how bad the fight choreography is lol
The corridor fight scene from the original Old Boy is one of the greatest of all time.
Taken 3 was an extremely bad example of this....he needs to throw a punch? cut 12 times.
Omg, yes. 100 cuts within 4 seconds just so you can't see what is going on
John Wick and Equalizer should at least crossover. They're both the same type of protagonists, just in different universes.
lol, just watched the John Wick movies for the first time. Good, but definitely a lot of "clearly for the sake of cinematography and no way someone would make that move in a real fight" moments
They're so LONG. Where are my snappy, well-paced, 90 minute films? Why is everything two and a half hours long now?
Back in the 1960's (give or take a decade) movies were regularly 2.5 to 3 hours long. It was normal to have an intermission. Thinking about "My Fair Lady" and " The Great Escape" specifically but many others as well.
Gone With The Wind, Dr Zhivago, The Godfather, Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments. Yeah, there were some long ones.
Load More Replies...I prefer long movies with room for development and explanations over cropped movies, where random scenes are cut short just to save time. Shortness often takes away quality and logic.
All the above are why I'm re-watching MASH and Gunsmoke, original MacGyver, or anything before 2005.
Average movie is usually 90-12O minutes. Blockbusters are at least two hours long. Btw, people who complain about long movies, should watch something from Bollywood. Their movies are at least two and half hours. Or longer.
Thanks to the MCU, 2 to 2 1/2 hr long movies are nothing now. As long as it's well written or keeps the interests of the audience, maybe the extra time is needed. There are still plenty of movies being released that are that shorter time span. ( I work at a movie theater).
Only if they are dumb scripts that go on to long. Love long movies with a great story that takes time
Story lines that are entirely dependent on special effects.
Oh come on, I watch Bond movies just for the chase scenes. Sometimes that is their niche.
As one of my favorite (book) authors puts it, "the story stops for 6 pages while boys fight." Not always boys anymore, at least.
Too much special effects notvenough story. (Too much icing not enough cake,).
What if it's a movie about special effects artists who have to solve crimes using only their wits and skills as............DUH DUH DUH Special Effects Artists?
The colour palettes of the nowadays movies. Either they have to be way too colorful which destroys the atmosphere of the movie's plot (sometimes improves it too ngl but that's just a small fraction) or maybe just way too dark which sometimes is just hard to watch and make out what's happening with the scene itself.
Perfect example being most of the nowadays Netflix shows and movies, you won't make half of the scenes until the brightness is throttled all the way up to sun in your monitor. Lazy acting on their behalf for sure.
You can cover up a lot of issues with half ässed scenography by keeping the light low
Yeah, Stranger Things should have been called Blue Things. Everything was blue all the time!!
I suffer from migraines, I also like to have the TV on when I go to bed. It should be easier to dim the TV. I can turn down the volume directly but have to dig through 5 menus to dim the brightness?
Trim a piece of cardboard to cover the tv screen (buy leave the eye exposed so you can adjust the volumn) and tape it to the tv so you can just flip it over to cover the screen or flip it back to watch tv.

2 things for me
1) Blatant trend hopping. It’s barely even been a year of the multiverse trend and I’m already so tired of it, and how many “Look guys, it’s a children’s property but it’s a slasher and has gore, isn’t that shocking and subversive????” have cropped up lately? It’s just annoying and unoriginal.
2) How American remakes/releases of foreign/international films soften all the edges and hate dark/morally ambiguous endings, i.e., Insomnia, The Descent, Oldboy, etc.
I despise western remakes! Especially live action western remakes of anime.... ( looking at you, Ghost in the shell...) And as for the upcoming americanized live action remake of "Your Name".... KEEP YOUR FKN HANDS OFF, YOU PHILISTINES!!!!
Ghost in the shell was so bad. It missed most of the comments on transhumanism and losing your self the anime movie and series explore.

Load More Replies...For number 1 it’s because Disney just released to the rights to a bunch of their characters. Really, horror is the only genre that can take a beloved character and turn it into something other than what we expect to see. They aren’t made for kids so if a Winnie the Pooh horror movie ruins your childhood that’s a you problem
It’s all reused garbage with scripts a five year old child could’ve written. Nothing new, nothing original, no risk taking. Just pump out a s****y remake or adapt some poor book/video game into a movie and ruin it for all of the fans. Everything is done according to a formula to try and make as much money as physically possible.
This is offensive to my 5 yr old cousin. She tells better stories than a lot of adults I know.
I could probably write a better story then some ofthe official people...
A good movie is made by the taking of risks. Big franchises have stopped doing that and it's boring
They keep forcing woke characters and having them there because they are woke. Like making Velma gay and giving Shaggy the tan of a lifetime is asking for criticism. Long running series like Scooby Doo has made Shaggy an icon, and most of the Scooby media portrays him and Velma having a on/off relationship. Compare that to Jesus from the Walking Dead when he’s actually a badass character and not there for the sole purpose of being a gay character, he is relevant to the plot, same goes for Aaron who is in the same show. Same applies when you make changes to a character. Take Gaz from Modern Warfare, yes they made him black. But they also made him more memorable than his original counterpart, and overall a better written character.
Yeah. A character should be gay, not a gay character. Queer people are people before we are queer.
I thought Keiran Culkan's character in Scott Pilgrim was a good gay character. But then I'm not gay, so who am I to say?
Load More Replies...Also in many stories the sexual orientation of the character just is not relevant. Take the Scooby-Doo characters, just skip the romance. Let them be friends. Besides, why does Velma need to be gay, why not Daphne or Fred? But anyway you look at it, their sexual orientation should not matter for for a Scooby-Doo mystery. Though I'd be perfectly cool with subtle Marijuana jokes with Shaggy, looking back at the cartoon they jokes were there, I just didn't get it as a kid.
Sulu in Star Trek Beyond is a good example - he has a husband and a child, which is shown a few times before the big action. We as audience know why he gives everything to stop the bad guy and save the people on the space station, that he is gay doesn't change the consequences if he fails
Load More Replies...As a kid who watched every single Scooby Doo episode available multiple times, where is Velma and Shaggy dating? Honestly, making Velma lesbian or asexual makes sense for her character. It would also make sense if she experimented with Shaggy. But I seriously don't remember anything before 2000 showing Velma and Shaggy dating. The closest I remember is Shaggy jumping on Velma when scared
It's in two of the newer animated series, and honestly, I can see your point. Velma was into Shaggy but he was more into his bromance with Scooby-Doo and she gave up. That was about it. Her transitioning to a relationship with a like-minded girl with similar interests makes a lot of sense, really. .
Load More Replies...Problem is that people will be bitching about gay characters, even if they're well written. They just see gay character and "eww, gay, I hate woke culture, blah blah blah"
Not for nothing, we all knew Velma was gay (like peppermint patty) but they are people first. We also know Daphne is the beauty queen but we see is more than that as well. Just depict people and not a stereotype.
We don’t have enough reboots or reboots of reboots. We. Need. *More.*
"original" movies still exist just no one watches them because they gave up on them before they saw them.
Load More Replies...As much as I loved SEVERAL of the Spiderman movies, I will not watch another. We've lost the original concept just to get another round of movies/tickets/money/merch.
The art of storytelling is gone, its all metrics and b******t and hyper targeting audiences. How they are made pisses me off the most. Total lack of original anything as well because metrics tell them a sequel #8 is better.
I just have to say this: Star Wars has the dumbest plot point in all of human storytelling: Padme's death. Are you flipping kidding me? "She's perfectly healthy but has no will to live". Must love your babies there. Oh and they never mention her ever again. Arrtoo never restores C3PO's whole memory (rise of Skywalker anyone?). Just a huge disappointment to someone who was 7 years old and saw the very first on in the theater in 1977. Oh, and as someone who has ever seen or heard a story ever.
Any big franchise movie is gonna do this. I'd recommend looking more at indie movies, those tend to have a soul
I've been saying this exact thing for years! Come in , Hollyweird!! Do better!! Or you won't get my $$!!
Just because something was a good choice or controversial but successful thing in a film doesn't mean every other network needs to copy it. Really need to stray away from this formulative b******t.
Yeah. If a risk is taken and works, that makes it no longer a risk. The first movie to take the risk is usually good, but the copycats just get worse
there all influenced by corporate s**t and not just creative vision anymore.
Again, you should look for indie movies. They have souls
Very true. Sadly, they're not on a lot of streaming services, and if they are, they aren't being advertised enough.

The overuse of cover songs. Recently been a lot of classic rock songs covered by an artist who recorded a slowed version of it.
Edit. Just saw the trailer for the new Ant Man. It also does this
Yeah, unless the cover is at least as good as the original, just knock it off. The prototype example for how to do it correctly would be Johnny Cash covering the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt". Both stand on their own and are great songs.
Placebo’s cover of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill is another
Load More Replies...I hate the trend of having fast, hard songs sung slowly by a woman in a melancholic tone with an equal lame instrumental in the backround. "Last Resort", "In the End" or "Land of Confusion" are the most recent ones I heard being used on TV
But I love cover songs. I have a whole playlist of mostly cover songs (but also remixes) that I discovered from movie or game trailers. I love Ursine Vulpine's cover of Do You Realize. I think it was from a Tranformers trailer. I don't think I even watched the movie. I used to really dislike cover songs in my youth but after a while there's so many I learned to enjoy them for what they are.
But sometimes cover songs can be better then the original, take Rascal Flats cover of Life Is A Highway for Cars. The music of the original song seems sort of out of time with the lyrics but the RF's cover is amazing, play it and the whole room will be jamming to it.
Nope - the original Life is a Highway by Tom Cochrane is better.
